NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-The North Platte Community Playhouse will soon be auditioning for the first show of the 2021-2022 Season, “Fiddler on the Roof”. 

The show calls for a cast of approximately 30 people, men and women, ages 16 and up. 

Tryouts will be held on Monday. Tuesday, and Wednesday, July 26-28 at 7:00 pm in the Patty Birge Room of the playhouse. Callbacks will be Thursday, July 30 also at 7. 

Those auditioning will need to learn and sing a song from the show, as well as a reading from different characters.

Fiddler on the Roof is a musical with music by Jerry

Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, and book by Joseph Stein, set in the Pale of Settlement of Imperial Russia in or around 1905. It is based on Tevye and his Daughters (or Tevye the Dairyman) and other tales by Sholem Aleichem. The story centers on Tevye, the father of five daughters, and his attempts to maintain his Jewish religious and cultural traditions as outside influences encroach upon the family's

lives. He must cope both with the strong-willed actions of his three older daughters, who wish to marry for love – each one's choice of a husband moves further away from the customs of their Jewish faith and heritage – and with the edict of the Tsar that evicts the Jews from their village.

The original Broadway production of the show, which opened in 1964, had the first musical theatre run in history to surpass 3,000 performances

The show is being directed by Darrell Drullinger, and musical directors are Karen Mathies and Mary-Lynn Horst. Th production will be presented September 25, 26, 27 and October 2, 3, 4. Times and oth-er details will follow.

A Bridgeport man has been selected as a contestant on "Dream Chopper".&nbsp;

56 year-old Michael Harden could win a chance to build a dream motorcycle with&nbsp;Paul Teutul Sr. and appear on an episode with Orange County Choppers.&nbsp;

Harden is a member of&nbsp;American Legion Post 7 and American Legion Riders Chapter 43 in Bridgeport.&nbsp;

"I’m honored to get this opportunity to be selected from our great state," Harden said. "Win or not, it’s a win for me."

Harden said he's been riding motorcycles since he was a child and always loved to create things.&nbsp;

"If, by chance, I’m the winner, my dream bike will be a tribute to the airborne soldiers," Harden said. "Without these brave men and women our military couldn’t carry out our special operations."

On July 19 at approximately 11:14 a.m. a blue 2002 Mercury Marquis&nbsp; driven by 68 year-old Arlene Goergen of Crawford was traveling east on Highway 26 approaching the Avenue B intersection in Scottsbluff.

  A red 2010 Honda CRV&nbsp; driven by 32 year-old Cassandra Brotzman of Scottsbluff was traveling north on Avenue B approaching the Highway 26 intersection. 

"The Marquis driven by Goergen failed to stop at the traffic signal and struck the red CRV driven by Brotzman,"Scottsbluff Police Patrol Sergeant Dominick Peterson said. "Both drivers refused medical treatment by Scottsbluff Fire and Valley EMS."

Goergen was cited for a traffic signal and seatbelt violation.

Crawford woman involved in Scottsbluff vehicle accident

November. The project will be called Victory Village on Lakeview,

A
formal groundbreaking ceremony will be held at the site on the
northeast corner of Lakeview &amp; West A St at 10 am on Tuesday.


The
project was delayed a year by complications created by the Covid-19
pandemic. 

“Constant efforts by
Gary Person and the city of North Platte kept this project going. At
every turn the city folks worked for the betterment of their
community and that inspired us to find a way to make it work,” said Brian Reilly, President of DP. 


The
project involves funding from the Nebraska Rural Workforce Housing
Fund. Lieutenant Governor Mike Foley and Director of Housing and
Field Services Sheryl Hiatt will represent the state at the
groundbreaking.


This
ceremony marks the first of two 80-unit phases of 20 8-plex apartment
buildings. The first phase will include amenities such as a
clubhouse, pool, and fitness room. Victory Village units are unique
to the market, providing residents the peace of mind of having their
own front door, no shared or interior corridors, and expansive green
spaces to walk pets and relax outdoors in the comfort of the complex.

New North Platte apartment community to break ground Tuesday

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-Things are booming in the realm of economic development in North Platte.

Last night, the city's Quality Growth Fund Committee and the North Platte/Northwestern Economic Development Fund Committee met to discuss requests for funding from Sustainable Beef, LLC.

The proposed $9 million processing plant would be constructed on the city's east side, near the wastewater treatment plant.

David Briggs of Sustainable Beef addressed the committees.

"We're trying to build a packing plant to help the cattleman in this area, help the city of North Platte, and also help our industry in the United States," said Briggs.

Briggs said the need for this type of facility became apparent in 2019, referencing a fire at the Holcomb, Kansas, Tyson plant.

"Overnight, about 7,000 head a day disappeared from processing," Briggs said. "This really disrupted the entire industry."

Briggs said the plant will process about 1,500 head of cattle each day.

"We're going to have the same overhead whether we did 500 head a day or 1,500 a day," Briggs said. "Processing 1,500 head a day will make us much more efficient."

Briggs said they see the need for about three or four plants of this nature across the region.

Briggs also said the proposed location of the plant would be ideal for this type of operation and will bring numerous ancillary businesses to the area.

Briggs said they have the support of local, state, and federal leadership for the project.

The plant would operate with around 875 employees.

Finally, Briggs referenced an economic impact study by Creighton University economist, Ernie Goss, which estimates a $1 billion benefit to the city every year with 2,000 employees being added city-wide.

The project is requesting $500,000 from both the Northwestern Fund and the Quality Growth Fund, for a total of $1 million.

Sustainable Beef was initially applying for grant funds, but on the recommendation by QGF committee member Pat Keenan, the request transitioned into a forgivable loan.

After discussion, the committee made a motion to approve the funds, contingent upon the approval of the project's redevelopment plan by the city council. A letter of credit will also be required.&nbsp;

The loan will be forgivable when the plant reaches $20 million in payroll.

The meeting was then opened up for public comment.

Concerns addressed the depletion of funds and the availability of funds for small businesses, as well as the proposed location of the plant. Concerns over the environmental impact were also voiced.

The recommendation will now be forwarded to the city council for consideration at its August 3 meeting.

NDOT reports 30 deaths on Nebraska roads in June

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-As efforts continue to raise funds for the North Platte Community Build Playground, residents will have a sweet and sour opportunity to support the project.

Organizers will be hosting a lemonade stand on Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the current Centennial Park playground, which will eventually be home to the new playground.

The stand will be hosted by playground committee members and their families and drinks will be offered for a free-will donation.

Additionally, there will be opportunities to purchase memorial bricks, fence pickets and sign up to volunteer for the building dates in September.

Organizers say all funds raised will go towards the new playground.

The lemonade will be provided by the North Platte Raising Cains location.

Cruise Nite event once again saw thousands of participates,
attendees, volunteers, and residents come together for a safe and
enjoyable weekend. While we experienced areas of congested traffic
volume on Saturday night along 2nd Avenue and 25th Street, there were
no major concerns or incidents related to this event.

with any large-scale event, members of the Kearney Police Department
focus on preparation, collaboration, and community engagement toward
a safe and secure outcome. We appreciate the assistance from our
allied agencies, community partners and event organizers toward this
goal. I couldn’t be prouder of the Kearney Police Department,
preparation for this event requires months of planning, additional
staff, equipment, and resources. All of our staff once again stepped

There
were 241 calls for service between 6:00 pm on Friday, July 16th,
through 6:00 am on Sunday, July 18th. KPD investigated 10 traffic
accidents and performed 85 traffic stops during this time. These

County Sheriff’s Office, Nebraska State Patrol, and U.N.K. Police
all collaboratively worked together for Cruise Nite.

Kearney police: No major incidents during Cruise Night

WATERTOWN, S.D. (AP) — The South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks is weighing how to proceed on beaver hunting in the Black Hills and the state. 

The idea for a hunting ban surfaced recently when the Game, Fish and Parks Commission discussed a proposal to create a year-round beaver hunting season across the state, with hunting only allowed in portions of the Black Hills not owned by the U.S. Forest Service from Nov. 1 to April 30. 

Keith Fisk, the agency’s program administrator, says he receives at least 500 beaver complaints each year. 

But Commissioner Travis Bies said the population has been greatly decreased in the Black Hills. 

Bies called for a study of the beaver population, a suggestion that prompted the commission to table the proposal to its September meeting.

Beaver hunting under the microscope in South Dakota

MULLEN, Neb.-The Nebraska Cattlemen Sandhills Affiliate (NCSA) hosted their annual summer outing at the Dismal River Golf Club (DRGC) on June 21.

“This is one of our annual events we host. 60 golfers, the most we have ever had, enjoyed a great day of golf. The DRGC provided the great beef meal to 90 who came that evening," said Kelly Kennedy, Purdum, treasurer for the NCSA.

John Kraye, Mullen, president of the local cattlemen affiliate welcomed all for coming.

Besides Kraye and Kennedy, other NCSA board members include Frank Utter, Eric Schipporeit, and Dan Wacher, Brewster, Stefani Niesen, Purdum, Troy Saner, Adam Zutavern, Dunning and Miles Mundorf, Mullen. Kraye went on to thank the sponsors for the day’s events – Western Nebraska Bank, Agri Affiliates, Harsh Mercantile, and Al and Sallie Atkins, Halsey.

Prior to supper, Katie Tangen, Marketing Education Specialist with Ag Country of Farm Credit Services spoke on Cattle Market Updates. She is from Fargo, North Dakota.

“In North Dakota, we are in a severe drought. Our governor predicts by December, 50% of our cow numbers will be gone. One sale barn this time last year had 10 pairs sold, this year, 1200 pairs have been sold” said Tangen. 

One of her most potent slides was the list of ag commodities and their price change over the last few years. At the bottom – feeder cattle had a negative 0.63 % change while live cattle had a plus 8.06%. 

Three locations of wheat markets had from 26.72 to 39.5% increase, while corn saw a 65.87%, soybeans 73.42% and soybean oil a whapping 148.80% positive change.

After Tangen’s presentation, Brenda Masek, who will become Nebraska Cattlemen president at their convention in December in Kearney, spoke about the happenings with NC. She brought to light for those that were unaware, a petition going around to stop the Beef Check-Off. 

“Some may think this petition is for change, but it is to abolish the check-off. If you feel the check-off needs improvement, and you have ideas, please let the Nebraska Beef Council know,” said Masek. 

She implored the importance of the check-off – helping with marketing and promotion both here and abroad, research and educating the consumers are just some of the facets of the $1 per head investment producers make when selling their cattle. 

Frank Utter then told the group about the proposed Feeder calf tour the NCSA and the Sandhills Cattle Association (SCA) are planning. 

“It will be a two-day venture, headquartered in Thedford. The first day we hope to see calves in the Mullen – Thedford area, then go east or north the next day,” said Utter. 

He encouraged producers in the area to contact him or John Kraye if they are interested in showing their animals to feedlot personnel.

The NCSA was well pleased with the attendance, probably due in part to the last presentation of the evening. 

David Briggs, CEO of the newly formed Sustainable Beef LLC, a cattle processing plant coming to North Platte. 

The idea came after Rusty Kemp, a Tryon rancher, was with Governor Ricketts on a trade mission. They discussed need for more processing of beef in Nebraska. 

Kemp came back and started the ball rolling, finding other investors and enthusiasts. 

“We went to the Panhandle communities and got a negative reception. We went to North Platte who gave us a very favorable response," said Briggs. "We feel the three Cs are met in North Platte – that of a city central in Nebraska and on the edge of the Sandhills, the best beef producing area in the world, which is the 2nd C that of cattle – Nebraska ranks 2nd in cattle on feed with over 2.4 million head fed annually. The final C is capital, where producers can invest in ownership.”

He went on to describe the proposed plant. 

“The location is near ideal, already in a heavy industrial zone. It is close to I-80 exit 179. It will sit on 80 acres, which was the old sewer plant, so land will need raised," said Briggs. "It is next to the waste-water treatment plant, which is crucial as it takes between 400 to 600 gallons of water per head to process.” 

The estimated cost of the plant is $325 million with another $75 to $100 million needed for salaries, maintenance and such. The estimate of employees are 875, with 800 on the floor. 

“One shift only at this point is projected, with average wage of workers being $50,000 per year or $50 million for payroll per year," said Briggs. "North Platte could see $1 billion in economic benefit per year. The plant is contingent on TIF (Tax Increment Financing). As to date, the proposal has gone before the city council and had their support, but other hearings will be needed." 

“We hope to break ground this fall and be complete by 2023,” said Briggs. 

The plant hopes to process 400,000 head per year, including cull cows where they will process their own hamburger from them at the plant. Briggs answered other questions after his formal presentation concluded. 

“Investors will pay $100 per head and guarantee at least one semi-trailer load per month. Small producers can collaborate, one producer has the contract, but if they can guarantee a semi-load for 4 to 5 months out of the year that can be a way for them to get rid of their cull cows every year and be a part of Sustainable Beef LLC,” said Briggs.

One sale barn this time last year had 10 pairs sold, this year, 1200 pairs have been sold” said Tangen. One of her most potent slides was the list of ag commodities and their price change over the last few years. At the bottom – feeder cattle had a negative 0.63 % change while live cattle had a plus 8.06%. Sandhills Cattlemen host summer outing in Mullen

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska schools are getting conflicting advice from state and federal health officials over whether students should quarantine after contact with someone who tests positive for COVID-19. 

The state Department of Health and Human Services is telling schools that students who had contact with an infected person would not have to quarantine as long as they don’t have any symptoms of COVID-19. 

But the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that students who aren’t vaccinated and have close contact with an infected person should still quarantine.

Each school district will be left to decide which advice to follow after consulting with local health officials.

Other cash prizes range from $5,000 to $4. Lucky for Life tickets can be purchased 5:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m. CT any day of the week except from 8:30 p.m. to 8:33 p.m. CT on drawing nights.

Families First Partnership is pleased to announce that they
have been awarded a community grant of $3000 from the North Platte
Walmart.  The funds will be used to purchase items for Project
Connect, a local resources fair to be held on August 3 from 1:00-4:00 p.m. at North Platte High School.  


 For 2021,
Project Connect will be held in conjunction with the Mobile Food
Pantry.  It will be carried out as a drive-through event in which low-resource families may select the type of assistance kit that they
need.  North Platte Public Schools will be participating in this
event to hand out school supply backpacks for students in the North
Platte School District.  For the Project Connect assistance, families
will need to select either a cleaning supplies kit, a hygiene kit, or
a complete twin sheet set for a child’s bed- of which all items
will be purchased locally using the Walmart Community Grant funds.  


Families First Partnership has operated as a non-profit organization since January
2019 and serves as the backbone organization for collaborative
efforts in Lincoln County.  The focus of the collaborative partners
is to prevent children and at-risk youth from going into higher
systems of care.  With this goal in mind, Families First Partnership encourages other local agencies in their work and offers
support in the form of trainings or financial assistance to the
agency’s participants.    In addition to financial support to
stabilize families, there is sponsorship of parenting classes and
family activities.  


In the 2 years
since the acquisition of non-profit status, Families First Partnership has provided $365,380 locally in assistance for housing,
transportation, childcare, daily living needs, and supplies for
childcare providers.  In the training of frontline workers, $15,657
has been made available for trainings relevant to working with at
risk populations.  


Families First Partnership receives grant funding from Nebraska Children and
Families Foundation.

North Platte Walmart grants $3K to Families First Partnership

ALDEN, Iowa — Summit Agricultural Group, through its investment 
affiliate Summit Ag Investors, has announced the acquisition of Prairie Horizon Agri-Energy, a biorefinery in Phillipsburg.


 Summit will construct a state-of-the-art wheat protein ingredients 
facility and retrofit the existing corn-based ethanol plant to produce 
ethanol from wheat starch. Upon completion of the ingredients plant and 
final conversion, the company will be the largest wheat protein producer
 in North America and will generate low carbon intensity renewable fuel. 

"Recognizing the rising demand for high protein ingredients and 
innovative feed products, coupled with renewable fuels that reduce our 
carbon footprint, this investment fits with what we have successfully 
done many times in Summit's history. We evaluated several sites in 
various wheat-growing areas and Prairie Horizon is ideally located. The 
wheat protein we will produce is a healthy ingredient used widely within
 baked goods, pet food and growing aquaculture feed markets. Today, 
wheat protein demand in the US is heavily reliant on imports and with 
consumers demanding more transparency about the origins of the food they
 eat, we see a real opportunity," said Bruce Rastetter, Chief Executive Officer of Summit Agricultural Group.

Summit will utilize best-in-class construction and engineering providers for the project which will total more than $200 million. The ingredients plant will be operational within two years and will be the largest wheat protein facility in North America.

Severe weather possible for southwest Nebraska this evening

LINCOLN, Neb. -- A new&nbsp;<a href="https://www.commoncause.org/nebraska/wp-content/uploads/sites/18/2021/07/NebraskaLobbyingReport2021_WEB.pdf" target="_blank">Common Cause Nebraska report</a>&nbsp;showed last year, more than $18 million was invested in lobbying efforts in Nebraska. By comparison, in 2000, just over $3 million was spent lobbying. Jack Gould, issues chairman for the group, said high levels of spending to influence public policy can have an erosive impact on the democratic system. He is especially worried about senators who lean on lobbying firms to finance their election campaigns. Report: Lobbyist spending in Nebraska thrived during pandemic

OMAHA -&nbsp;For the first time in six years, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in Nebraska has surpassed $3.&nbsp;

“Peak summer driving season is in full-swing as Nebraskans hit the road to explore, and gas prices are not backing down,” said Nick Faustman, AAA spokesperson.&nbsp; Today’s $3.01 average is up 10 cents from one month ago and 88 cents from this time last year; however, it remains 15 cents below the national average of $3.16, according to AAA. &nbsp;The last time Nebraska motorists paid a statewide average of more than $3 for gas was Nov. 16, 2014.

At 10 million b/d, gasoline demand reached a new Energy Information Administration (EIA) record last week, and that number only partially reflects Independence Day holiday weekend travel. The nearly 1 million b/d jump in demand drove down gasoline supplies by 6.1 million bbl to 235,000 million bbl and has consequently pushed the national average pump price up to its current level.

The price of crude oil, which fluctuated some following OPEC’s failure to reach an agreement on production increases, continues to be a dominant factor in determining how high prices will go this summer. Last week ended with higher crude prices than the start, though still under $75/bbl. AAA believes those prices have the potential to increase this week, which will only lead to more expensive pump prices, especially amid robust demand.

🎙 Lincoln County rail park seeks Quality Growth Funds

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A Nebraska state senator and financial adviser has officially launched his campaign for governor. 

Sen. Brett Lindstrom, of Omaha, announced he will run in the Republican primary.&nbsp;

Lindstrom, a former walk-on Husker quarterback, is serving is second term in the Legislature. 

In his campaign announcement video, Lindstrom says he’ll push for tax cuts if elected.

 The 40-year-old said Nebraska needs “a new generation of leadership.”

 Lindstrom is looking to replace Gov. Pete Ricketts, who can’t run again in 2022 because of term limits.

 Two other candidates, University of Nebraska Regent Jim Pillen and Nebraska businessman Charles Herbster, have already launched their campaign and are running ads.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska’s unemployment rate remained almost unchanged last month while the rates in some of its biggest cities increased slightly. 

The Nebraska Department of Labor reports a statewide, seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 2.5% in June, compared to 2.6% in May. 

The rate is substantially lower than the 6.6% unemployment rate in June 2020, in the heat of the coronavirus pandemic. 

Meanwhile, the non-seasonally adjusted rates in the Omaha, Lincoln and Grand Island areas ticked upward. 

The Omaha area’s unemployment rate increased to 3.2% in June, from 2.7% the prior month. The Lincoln area’s rate increased to 2.5%, from 2.5% the previous month. And the Grand Island area’s rate rose to 2.8% in June, up from 2.4% in May.

Nebraska State Patrol documents obtained by The Associated Press show that the state committed, at least initially, not to seek reimbursement for the mission, which is estimated to cost more than $334,000. 

A spokesman for the patrol and Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts, a fellow Republican, issued a joint written statement after the documents were released, saying they will seek to be repaid if given the opportunity.

Neleigh Hauxwell, of Culbertson, has been recognized as a 2021 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholar. The McCook Community College student will receive a $1,000 scholarship for her efforts.

The Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholarship Program helps new Phi Theta Kappa members defray educational expenses while enrolled in associate degree programs.

Scholars are encouraged to assume leadership roles by participating in society programs and are chosen based on scholastic achievement, community service and leadership potential.

More than 900 applications were received this year, and Hauxwell was one of 207 PTK members selected.

The Leaders of Promise Scholarship Program awards a total of $207,000. The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation provides $200,000 in funding for the scholarships, with $25,000 set aside for members who are veterans or active members of the U.S. military.

The remaining amount is supported by donations to the PTK Foundation and provides seven Global Leaders of Promise Scholarships, earmarked for international students.

“The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation has a long history of providing financial assistance to outstanding students at community colleges,” said Jane Hale Hopkins, president of the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation. “We are proud to partner with Phi Theta Kappa to make it possible for more deserving students to achieve their educational goals and support tomorrow’s leaders of the global community.”

The funds provided by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation not only aid college completion, but also give students the opportunity to engage in society programs and develop leadership skills to become future leaders in their communities.
