OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Meatpacking companies and public health officials are trying to overcome any reluctance workers may have about coronavirus vaccines before they become eligible to get them.

Major companies such as Tyson Foods and JBS are encouraging workers to get the vaccine with campaigns to educate them about the benefits and safety of the shots. Also, JBS and Pilgrim's Corp. are offering $100 bonuses to workers who get the vaccine.

Last spring, the virus&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/6e446ae82aff17f25024f0533b7009ee" target="_blank">spread quickly</a>&nbsp;through meatpacking plants, where workers stand shoulder-to-shoulder as they carve up meat on production lines.

But some workers, who are largely immigrants, distrust the government and some question the safety of the shots because they were developed in less than a year, said Eric Reeder, president of United Food &amp; Commercial Workers Local 293 union.

"It's the same thing as when we tried to get people involved in the (vaccine) trials," Reeder&nbsp;<a href="https://omaha.com/lifestyles/health-med-fit/meatpackers-try-to-overcome-workers-vaccine-skepticism-jbs-offers-100-bonus-to-get-shots/article_563db32e-5f25-11eb-ab45-3fdba41562dd.html#tracking-source=home-top-story" target="_blank">told&nbsp;</a>the Omaha World-Herald. "We had a hard time with the non-English-speaking population. A lot of them felt like this was a government plot to kill them."

JBS spokeswoman Nikki Richardson said the company is trying to address workers' concerns through flyers in their native languages and other efforts.

"We are currently focused on achieving the highest voluntary participation rate possible and preventing barriers to getting the vaccine," said JBS spokeswoman Nikki Richardson. "We want to do everything we can to protect our team members, their families, their co-workers and our communities."

Reeder said he got the first dose of the vaccine Monday because he participated in a trial as it was being developed last year. He plans to share pictures of himself getting the vaccine with workers to encourage them to get it.

"A lot of it is just gonna be building some level of trust," Reeder said.

In Nebraska, meatpacking workers and other essential workers who can't work from home are scheduled to get the vaccine in one of the next phases of the campaign after health officials finish vaccinating people 65 and older. Gov. Pete Ricketts said local health officials will work with companies to determine the best way to vaccinate workers when the time comes.

Eddie Habte Mekasha, who works as a chaplain with the Ethiopian Community Association and in health care, said most immigrants he knows are eager to get the vaccine.

"At first, people were fearful and suspicious," he said. "But later, because of the good promotion by the media and health and community professionals, our members and similar immigrants are waiting eagerly to get vaccinated, and a few like me and my wife (have been) vaccinated."

More than 100,000 people have registered to get the vaccine since a new state website launched late last week, state officials said. So far, about 3.3% of the state's population has received both required doses of one of the vaccines, and 185,536 doses have been administered across Nebraska.

The state said 115 new cases of the virus were reported Monday, but that total will likely be adjusted in the next few days because Nebraska now reports positive cases by the date the tests were taken, not the day they were reported. A total of 191,437 virus cases and 1,929 deaths have been reported in the state.

Meatpacking firms encouraging workers to get virus vaccine

The new Dollar Tree/Family Dollar store opened up recently at the Alliance Plaza.&nbsp;

Box Butte Development Corporation (BBDC) stated that this new business will help grow Alliance.&nbsp;

"It can be viewed as an anchor," said Chelsie Herian, BBDC Executive Director. "Therefore it helps recruit other businesses to the plaza due to increased foot traffic."

There is also an economic benefit with increased sales tax revenues with Dollar Tree/Family Dollar moving into town.&nbsp;

Panhandle Post asked Herian about future growth with the Alliance Plaza.

"Dan Dickenson with Syndicate Block Companies has been trying to make some facade improvements to the plaza to make it more appealing to new businesses," Herian added.&nbsp;

There has been a lot of business growth on the west end of Alliance recently. Highway 385 is a big factor in that.&nbsp;

"Location is everything to a business," said Herian. "Since the 4-lane expansion...Highway 385 is where businesses want to be. Such as existing business Pizza Hut or new like O'Reilly's Auto Parts.  The traffic is on 385 and businesses want to be seen."

Herian stated there's been some challenges trying to get businesses to move into Alliance as the coronavirus pandemic continues.&nbsp;

"The pandemic has slowed some things down," said Herian. "But there are still people wanting to open their own business.  We will continue to assist however we can.&nbsp;When it comes to soliciting new businesses, a lot of that comes from listening to the community and then checking in on their demographic model.  Do we meet the business population requirements, connectivity to interstate, income, and workforce availability.  Plus a lot of stores today are franchised&nbsp;versus&nbsp;company owned...so then we run into issues finding a franchisee to make it happen."

Herian went on to say that she wants businesses to feel appreciated in the community.&nbsp;

"I would also like to add that making sure our businesses that are here feel appreciated is so important," Herian added. "If we can prove to a business that they matter, new businesses will want to come be part of that community too.  Any business is good business, but happy business owners mean the most."

Tax season provides opportunity to support Nebraska wildlife conservation

The Mid-Plains Community College Broken Bow Campus will launch a virtual cooking series next month – allowing participants to hone their culinary skills from the comfort of their own homes.

Classes will be taught by experts from the Broken Bow area, including Kaci Johnson, MPCC Broken Bow Campus administrator.

“With the ongoing pandemic, people tend to feel safer at home,” Johnson said. “With that in mind, we wanted to be able to offer something that would allow them to continue learning. This class is perfect for that. Thanks to technology, families can stay home together, bond together and gain new skills at the same time.”

Each class will last approximately two hours and will focus on specific cooking techniques.

“For example, the first class will be all about knife skills – using different types of knives and cutting boards and learning how to cut various fruits and vegetables safely,” Johnson said. “Participants will then take that information and apply it to making pico de gallo and guacamole so they can practice.”

Other classes will provide guidance on sauces such as roux and béchamels, sweets and desserts and couples cooking, during which, an entire meal will be made.

Johnson said common kitchen tools and ingredients will be used. A specific list will be sent upon registration as will a class Zoom link.

Classes are scheduled for 7-9 p.m. March 18, April 1, April 15 and April 29. They are $35 each or $130 for all. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Now that voters have legalized casino gambling in Nebraska, state lawmakers are trying to figure out how to regulate the industry and use some of the revenue it generates.

Members of the Legislature's General Affairs Committee dug into those details Monday in a public hearing focused on the soon-to-arrive casinos.

Some of the proposals considered would prohibit casino visitors from using credit cards to gamble, allow misdemeanor charges for people who cheat and require casinos to set up a way for gambling addicts to voluntarily bar themselves from the facilities. One provision of a bill would only allow sports betting inside casinos, an idea that drew opposition from a lawmaker whose district isn't currently eligible to get a casino.

"My community is feeling the effects (of casino gambling), but in no way will we draw the revenue," said Sen. Justin Wayne, who represents a high-poverty section of northern Omaha.

Roughly two-thirds of Nebraska voters approved constitutional amendments in November to allow casinos at the state's six licensed horse-racing tracks and devote some of the money to a tax credit for property owners. The ballot campaign was bankrolled by Ho-Chunk Inc., a company owned by the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska, which is now working to open casinos at tracks in Omaha, Lincoln and South Sioux City.

Lance Morgan, the president and CEO of Ho-Chunk, said the industry needs some regulations to clarify issues that couldn't be placed on the ballot measure, such as sports betting. He said the casinos will help Omaha and Lincoln by providing jobs for residents.

Gambling opponents, including Gov. Pete Ricketts, argued that the casinos will increase gambling addictions, leading to an increase in crime and personal bankruptcies.

Sen. Suzanne Geist, of Lincoln, proposed a bill that would divert some of the Lincoln casino's tax revenue to the group that organizes the Lancaster County Super Fair in her district. Cities and counties opposed the idea, saying it takes away their discretion to use the money for other needs.

Geist pointed to the Nebraska State Fair, which receives some of its funding from the Nebraska Lottery, and said she was looking for ways to finance Lincoln's county fair without using property taxes.

"Once (the money) ends up the general fund, it's very difficult to designate those dollars," she said.

Sen. Tom Briese, chairman of the General Affairs Committee, said it's important for lawmakers to move quickly to set up clear rules for the casinos, even though he personally opposes gambling.

"It's our responsibility to ensure that the will of the voters is respected," said Briese, of Albion.

Committee members took no immediate action on the bills.

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services said recipients of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, known as SNAP, will get increased money on their EBT cards.

The extra assistance comes from the federal government. Recipients saw a boost earlier in the pandemic, but the aid eventually expired. Gov. Pete Ricketts initially declined to renew Nebraska's request for the benefit as the economy recovered, but reapplied later as the number of virus cases surged.

Benefits will vary based on the number of people in a household and the amount they're currently receiving.

KEARNEY, Neb. (AP) - A woman critically injured last week in a Kearney house fire has died, officials there said.

Winona 'Jody' Londer, 74, of Kearney, died Friday at a Lincoln burn unit a day after she was pulled from the burning house, the Kearney Hub&nbsp;<a href="https://kearneyhub.com/news/local/kearney-woman-dies-at-lincoln-burn-unit-stove-fire-caused-house-to-burn/article_41ab2c56-6282-11eb-81c5-83bc78c81096.html" target="_blank">reported</a>.

Officials said the fire was reported Thursday morning by a neighbor who spotted heavy smoke coming from the home. Firefighters soon arrived and pulled Londer from burning house. Two police officers who initially responded also were treated for smoke inhalation.

The Nebraska Fire Marshal determined the fire started in the kitchen where a stove burner had been turned on and ignited combustible materials near it. The cause of the fire has been ruled accidental.

Police: Woman injured in Kearney house fire has died

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - The economy is continuing to show signs of improvement in nine Midwest and Plains states, according to a new monthly survey, but business leaders say the coronavirus pandemic is taking a bite out of their business.

January's overall index of the Creighton University Mid-America Business Conditions suggests improved growth, coming in at at a strong 67.3 from December's 64.1.

Any score above 50 on the survey's indexes suggests growth, while a score below 50 suggests recession.

The region lost 1.5 million, or 10.9%, of nonfarm jobs through April following the onset of the pandemic, said Creighton University economist Ernie Goss, who oversees the survey. The region has since regained 841,000 of the jobs lost, Goss said, and the latest survey numbers "indicate that the region is adding jobs and economic activity at a healthy pace, and that growth will remain healthy well into 2021."

The survey's confidence index, which looks ahead six months, jumped to 53.6 in January from December's weak 45.8.

Even with the rosier outlook, the employment index fell to 57.2 from December's 57.7. Despite adding jobs in January, three-quarters of supply managers said their businesses were affected by COVID-19 worker absences.

Supply managers were asked this month to identify the pandemic's affect on their firms' business prospects. Six of 10 said shutdowns had a negative affect, when about 43% reported cancellation of business meetings. Almost one-third reported difficulties in international buying.

The monthly survey covers Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma and South Dakota.

Midwest economy improving, but pandemic still taking a bite

CHADRON – The 49th annual High Plains Band and Choir festival will convene at Chadron State College Monday. About 70 students from 23 high schools in Nebraska, Wyoming, and South Dakota will attend. Due to COVID-19, the event will not feature a guest conductor this year. Students have the opportunity to audition for music scholarships at the festival.

Following rehearsals Monday and Tuesday, the final concert will be in Memorial Hall’s Auditorium Tuesday at 5 p.m. It is free and open to the public. Attendees will be required to wear face masks, socially distance, and temperatures will be scanned at the door.

Event coordinator Bobby Pace, CSC accompanist, said even though the college was not able to invite all students who qualified because of COVID-19 precautions, it is still an honor for all those selected based on successful auditions.

“A lot of them come from small schools and this is a great opportunity to be in a large ensemble with other students who enjoy music and are as skilled at music as they are,” Pace said. “I think it's really great they get to come see the college and perform at a higher level.”

In addition to offering clinics for the students, the CSC music faculty conduct sessions for the high school music directors to encourage communication and professional development.

Dr. Joel Schreuder will lead the chamber choir, Dr. Mckay Tebbs will lead the guitar ensemble, Dr. Rick Puzzo will lead the percussion ensemble, Dr. Michael Stephens will lead the woodwind ensemble, and Dr. John Wojcik will lead the brass ensemble.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Nearly 47,000 doses of coronavirus vaccines were administered across Nebraska last week as officials continue to speed up distribution of the vaccines.

State officials said 46,806 doses of the vaccine were administered last week, up from 31,036 doses administered the previous week.

The state estimates that 3.25% of Nebraska's population has now received both required doses of the vaccine. And Nebraska&nbsp;<a href="https://experience.arcgis.com/experience/ece0db09da4d4ca68252c3967aa1e9dd/page/page_1/" target="_blank">said&nbsp;</a>it has administered 184,045 of the 300,400 doses that have been allocated to it. Most of those vaccines have gone to health care workers and residents of long-term care facilities, but in some parts of the state people 65 and older and other groups are being vaccinated.

In central Nebraska, a group of teachers were vaccinated in Grand Island last week because the Central District Health Department had about 400 doses of the vaccine leftover after holding two drive-through clinics for older residents, and the medicine had to be used quickly because it had already been thawed.

Teachers aren't scheduled to get the vaccine until after older Nebraskans, but they were available quickly to use up the thawed doses.

"It's an issue of supply and demand. We need to figure out how to get people there when we have doses," said Teresa Anderson, director of the Grand Island-based health department. "It's strictly because we had to move vaccine. So we did it."

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — The Black Hills Stock Show is underway in South Dakota with new events and new safety protocols to guard against the coronavirus. 

The Rapid City Journal reports that some other big livestock shows have been canceled due to the pandemic, but organizers of the Black Hills show moved ahead. 

Ron Jeffries, general manager of the show, said inquiries were coming in from farther away than usual, especially from people interested in the youth livestock show and horse sale. 

Jeffries said masks and hand sanitizer are being provided to participants.

 Some events in the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center also have set aside sections for socially distanced seating.

Despite pandemic, Black Hills Stock Show is on

HAY SPRINGS, Neb. (AP) - Two Minnesota residents died in a crash near Hay Springs in western Nebraska, authorities said.

The crash happened early Friday morning on State Highway 87, about 6 miles (9.66 kilometers) south of Hay Springs, the Nebraska State Patrol said.

Investigators believe a pickup truck driven by a 45-year-old Hays Springs man ran a stop sign at a highway intersection and hit a small sport utility vehicle that was traveling on the highway. The patrol says the two people in the SUV - Remington Harder, 22, of Hutchinson, Minnesota, and Josey Tensen, 24, of Glenwood, Minnesota - were thrown from the car and died at the scene.

The driver of the truck suffered injuries not believed to be life-threatening, the patrol said. Authorities continue to investigate the crash.

WCDHD hosting mass vaccination event at NPHS for 2nd doses

LINCOLN, Neb. (NSP)-Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol arrested two people follow two separate pursuits late Friday evening on opposite ends of the state.

At approximately 10:45 pm MT, a trooper observed a Ford Edge speeding near mile marker 65 of Interstate 80, east of Sidney. The trooper attempted a traffic stop, but the vehicle accelerated and fled eastbound on I-80. The trooper initiated a pursuit. The vehicle reached speeds of 120 miles per hour during the pursuit. It exited I-80 at mile marker 76. As the vehicle reached the bottom of the exit ramp, it failed to navigate a right turn, entered the ditch and rolled. The driver, Carlos Chavez, 19, of Texas, was taken into custody without further incident.

The vehicle was confirmed to be stolen from Denver, Colorado. Chavez was arrested for theft by received stolen property, flight to avoid arrest, willful reckless driving, minor in possession, possession of an open alcohol container, and an outstanding warrant from Texas. He was lodged in Cheyenne County Jail.

Simultaneously, at approximately 11:55 p.m. CT, a trooper observed a Chevrolet Tahoe speeding on Highway 133 in Omaha, near Interstate 680. The trooper attempted a traffic stop, but the vehicle fled, turning westbound on N 103rd&nbsp;street. The trooper pursued.

The vehicle eventually entered an apartment complex near 108th&nbsp;and Redick Avenue. The Tahoe drove around the apartment complex multiple times before being blocked from exiting by another trooper. The Tahoe attempted to leave the parking lot by driving off-road, but became stuck in the snow. As the vehicle continued its attempt to fled, it moved enough to collide with the driver’s side door of a trooper’s patrol unit.

The driver attempted to flee on foot, but was quickly taken into custody. The driver, Joseph Keys, 41, of Omaha, was arrested for willful reckless driving, flight to avoid arrest, felony driving under suspension, obstructing a peace officer, resisting arrest, and traffic violations. He was lodged in Douglas County Jail.

Simultaneous pursuits at opposite ends of Nebraska lead to arrests


The Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office is
investigating a two-vehicle fatal traffic crash that occurred at
approximately 3:03 p.m., Saturday, January 30, 2021, approximately 4
miles west of Kearney, NE on Highway 30, between Evergreen Rd and
Sartoria Rd.  


    
According to preliminary investigation, a
2004 Ford pickup was traveling eastbound on Highway 30 when it lost
control on the icy roadway and crossed the centerline, striking a
westbound 2016 Chevrolet pickup.  The driver of the 2004 Ford pickup,
Dallas Gerdes, 70, of Oconto, Nebraska, was transported to CHI Good
Samaritan Hospital and is in stable condition.  The driver of the
2016 Chevrolet pickup, Rodney Svoboda, 53, of Upland, Nebraska, was
pronounced dead at the scene.

Assisting deputies were members of the
Kearney/Buffalo County Fatality Accident Investigation Team, Kearney
Police Department, CHI Good Samaritan Hospital Emergency Medical

Gov. Ricketts announces appointments to boards and commissions

CHADRON, Neb. -- A big year calls for big improvements for Nebraska’s first state park.

Chadron State Park, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2021, has been the subject of sizable upgrades and new construction at points throughout its 977 acres.

“This is a special year for us, and I’m thankful for those who have worked to make sure the park is in tip-top shape come summer,” said Gregg Galbraith, park superintendent. Perhaps the most noticeable project is the construction of an indoor archery and pellet gun range between the park’s office and the recently renovated Trading Post activities center.

The 3,100-square-foot range will include both three-dimensional and bulls-eye archery targets, and a five-station pellet gun range with a carnival-style shooting gallery.

A large fire pit is being constructed near the new building to serve as a gathering place for educational and group activities, and new playground equipment is being installed for children.

As part of a multi-year project, upgrades continue on the park’s 16 rustic cabins that were constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. Each of the rustic cabins have received new cupboards and countertops, and all but one has a new ceiling. Visitors are sure to notice the cabins have started receiving new siding, with a tan color scheme, and that screen has been removed from porches to facilitate gathering outside.

Two cabins – one of the six modern duplex units and one of the rustics – have been reconfigured for handicapped-accessibility.

Also on the lodging front, the park’s campground has received a new concrete showerhouse to replace the old one. In addition, 25 campsites are being upgraded to 50-amp electrical service. New prefabricated vault toilets recently were added near the basic tent camping area and near the Pinecone Shelter at the center of the park.

The Group Event Center, a popular facility for meetings, wedding receptions and other events, is among the list of recent improvements, with new flooring, paint, a reconfigured kitchen, storage and upgrades for handicapped accessibility.

The park recently received an upgrade to improve its electrical capacity. And, extensive pine thinning through the years has lessened the risk of damage from wildfires.

Not including the forestry work, the list of improvements totals more than $1.6 million. The funding has come from a variety of sources, including park permits and fees, grants, Nebraska’s LB309 Task Force for Building Renewal, the Nebraska Outdoor Recreational Development Act and the Game and Parks Commission’s Capital Maintenance Fund.

Another project Galbraith hopes to see completed soon is the resurfacing of the park’s 5.6 miles of asphalt roads. The project is opening to bid for contractors in February, and the start and completion dates are to be determined.

“Game and Parks has invested a lot of time and resources into making Chadron State Park better, and visitors are sure to appreciate the improvements for years to come,” Galbraith said.

Come out and see all of the improvements.”
