FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - BNSF's pick to be its next CEO will be the first woman to lead a major North American railroad.

BNSF said Monday that it will promote Kathryn Farmer in January to replace retiring President and CEO Carl Ice. Farmer currently oversees operations at BNSF and has been with the railroad for 28 years.

Farmer has held a variety of leadership positions at the railroad owned by Warren Buffett's conglomerate, Berkshire Hathaway. The Association of American Railroads trade group said Farmer will be the first female top executive at one of the biggest North American railroads.

"We look forward to Katie's leadership and more success. She possesses all of the qualities that make us excited about the future," Buffett said.

The Fort Worth, Texas-based railroad operates 32,500 miles of track in 28 western states. It is one of the largest subsidiaries of Berkshire Hathaway, which also owns more than 90 other insurance, utility, manufacturing and retail businesses. The Omaha, Nebraska-based conglomerate also has major investments in such companies as Apple, Bank of America, Coca-Cola and American Express,

(DENVER, Colorado) – Food allergies are on the rise, with more than&nbsp;<a href="https://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/142/6/e20181235">five million</a>&nbsp;children,&nbsp;about two kids in every school classroom, now suffering from&nbsp;allergy to&nbsp;at least one food. Researchers at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nationaljewish.org/home">National Jewish Health</a>&nbsp;are working to discover what is responsible for this increase and have determined that many allergic conditions likely start with dry, cracked skin, which leads to a chain reaction of allergic diseases known as the atopic march. It begins in infancy with eczema and leads to food allergies, asthma and hay fever later in childhood. Now, their latest study reveals that the time of year a baby is born may be a risk factor for the atopic march.

“We looked at every child treated in our clinic, and those born in the fall were much more likely to experience all of the conditions associated with the atopic march,” said&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nationaljewish.org/doctors-departments/providers/physicians/jessica-hui">Jessica Hui, MD</a>, a pediatrician at National Jewish Health and lead author of the study. “Now we are learning more about why that is and we strongly believe it stems from the bacteria on the skin on how they affect the skin barrier.”

Children with eczema often have&nbsp;high levels of a harmful bacteria called staph aureus&nbsp;on their skin, which weakens the skin’s ability to keep out allergens and pathogens.&nbsp;

“When food particles are able to penetrate the skin rather than being digested, the body sees them as foreign and creates antibodies against them, which causes the child to become allergic,”&nbsp;Dr.&nbsp;Hui said.

Researchers are now conducting a clinical trial to look at a wide variety of factors that may contribute to this weakened skin barrier in babies. They’re enrolling pregnant women and following their babies into early childhood to consider everything from environmental factors to genetics to medications taken and products used in the home. They hope that this will not only help explain why babies born in the fall are at greater risk, but will also help develop solutions to stop the atopic march in its tracks.

“We think if we can intervene at a very young age, even right after the baby’s out of the womb, then potentially that’s a way for us to try to stop the development of this atopic march,”&nbsp;Dr.&nbsp;Hui said.

Other potential solutions to prevent the atopic march is sealing the skin barriers of babies with eczema using wet wraps and lotions and introducing allergenic food early in life for kids at risk.

"A big shout-out to Lincoln County Sheriff Jerome Kramer! It came to my attention today that when so-called "peaceful protesters" flew into North Platte he met them at the airport and escorted them back onto the plane. He told them we didn't need them here. Yes! Too bad these other cities don't have the guts and integrity to do the same thing. Kudos Sheriff Kramer."

The Post reached out to LCSO and officials say this incident did not happen. It is unclear why the post was made.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-Officials with the West Central District Health Department reported 16 new positive cases in the WCDHD Jurisdiction on Monday.

Officials say all cases are from Lincoln County.

According to WCDHD four cases are community spread, one case is a close contact and 11 cases are under investigation.

Three cases are from September 11,&nbsp; four cases are from September 12, eight cases are from September 13, and one case is from today, according to WCDHD.

After further investigation, one case previously identified as a resident of the WCDHD jurisdiction was transferred to the appropriate health department.

WCDHD reports 16 new positive COVID cases in Lincoln County

OMAHA, Neb.-United States Attorney Joe Kelly announced that Justin Zambrowski, 44, of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, and Rachael Wasserburger, 24, of Box Elder, South Dakota, were sentenced today by Senior United States District Judge Laurie Smith Camp for possession with intent to distribute 50 grams or more of a mixture of methamphetamine. Zambrowski was sentenced to 60 months in prison, and Wasserburger was sentenced to 65 months in prison. There is no parole in the federal system. Upon their release from prison, they will each serve four years of supervised release.

On March 20, 2019, law enforcement was dispatched to County Road 14 in Banner County, Nebraska, after receiving a call about two people sleeping in a car. The parties were identified as Justin Zambrowski and Rachael Wasserburger. Law enforcement received permission to search the vehicle and located 75 grams of methamphetamine.

This case was investigated by the Nebraska State Patrol.

KEARNEY – The University of Nebraska at Kearney continues to climb U.S. News and World Report’s annual “Best Colleges” lists, reaching its highest ranking ever.

UNK is No. 6 on the publication’s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges/rankings/regional-universities-midwest/top-public">list of the top public regional universities in the Midwest</a>, up three spots from last year.

This is the 13th straight year UNK has been recognized as a top public regional university in the Midwest, and the sixth time the school has been ranked inside the Top 10. No other Nebraska school cracked the Top 25 on this year’s list, which was released Monday.

“The magazine’s rankings have come to be observed and respected as a comprehensive evaluation of quality. The placement at sixth among regional public universities is the highest achieved by this institution, and is cause for celebration and reflection on the University of Nebraska at Kearney’s competitive advantage,” said Chancellor Doug Kristensen. “More importantly, that measurement helps validate what UNK faculty, staff and students have been telling others: that real quality and affordability are indeed the UNK experience.”

Among all Midwest regional universities – both public and private – UNK improved its position from 46th to 33rd, ranking ahead of institutions such as Wayne State College, Chadron State College, Peru State College, Bellevue University, Concordia University, Midland University, Northwest Missouri State University, Fort Hays State University, Emporia State University, Pittsburg State University, Missouri Western State University and University of Central Missouri.

Kristensen said the peer comparisons provide an opportunity to demonstrate performance among similar colleges and universities.

UNK was also listed as a “best value school,” ranking 11th among Midwest regional universities. That lists looks at total cost minus grants, and the percentage of students receiving need-based grants. UNK’s average annual cost after grants was $20,011 in 2019, according to the assessment.

In the “best colleges for veterans” category, UNK ranked 24th among Midwest regional universities, with a veteran/military enrollment of 113 students for the evaluation period.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested two people after locating multiple controlled substances and a firearm during a traffic stop on Interstate 80 near Sutherland.

At approximately 9:40 p.m. Sunday, troopers observed an eastbound Kia Optima traveling at 101 miles per hour on I-80 near mile marker 152. During the traffic stop, the trooper detected the odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. A search of the vehicle revealed 970 pills of suspected ecstasy, four pounds of marijuana, drug paraphernalia, and a loaded handgun.

The driver, Jabreel Castleberry, 22, of Kentwood, Michigan, and passenger, Nyesha Gill Johnson, 19, of Wyoming, Michigan, were both arrested on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance, possession with intent to distribute, possession of marijuana – more than one pound, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Castleberry was additionally cited for possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.

Officials said the driver and a passenger in the semi were taken to a Broken Bow hospital with injuries. Their medical conditions had not been released by Monday.

A stretch of Highway 2 was closed for several hours as law enforcement officials investigated the cause of the crash.

“Our nation’s current health emergency has drawn even more attention to just how vital access to voice and broadband services are for each and every one of us,” said Commission chair, Mary Ridder. “These services help us find jobs, get an education, access health care, call emergency services and connect with family.” 

Under the Federal Lifeline Program, consumers who participate in certain public assistance and veterans programs or qualify based on income can receive a discount of up to $9.25 per month off an eligible phone, broadband, or bundled phone/broadband service.  

The PSC’s Nebraska Telephone Assistance Program (NTAP)/Lifeline Program helps qualified Nebraskans by providing an additional $3.50 each month, towards a voice phone service or bundled phone/broadband service.  

Commissioner Ridder said, “Data shows that in Nebraska we have 195,244 eligible households, yet only two-percent or 4,335 are enrolled in the Lifeline Program. September 14-18 proclaimed Lifeline Awareness Week

Mid-Plains Community College has begun the fall semester with four new instructors. They are: Jeff Holthus, Kelley Cole, Sean Tossi and Kristin Simpson.

Jeff Holthus arrived at Mid-Plains following a career change. MPCC’s new first-year welding instructor in McCook taught health and physical education for McCook Public Schools for six years and also coached four sports.

“I decided to take a different route that would provide more flexibility for my family,” Holthus said. “I’m originally from McCook, but both of my grandparents were dairy and hog farmers in Kansas, so I’ve been around welding for quite a few years and always had an interest in it.”

Holthus graduated from the McCook welding program last year after working part-time as the program’s welding lab technician.

“It has been a fun process to see things from the student perspective and now that of an instructor,” Holthus said. “I’m able to take a lot of things that I learned last year and implement them. I’m looking forward to building up the program and working with students who want to go into welding. The students are here because they want to be here, and because of that, they are pretty dedicated.”

Holthus is especially excited about the opportunity to introduce local high school students to the field through a collaboration with McCook High School.

“We work with about a dozen high school students on Tuesdays and Thursdays,” Holthus said. “Getting that experience early on is so valuable to them. They will be so far ahead in an industry where the demand is higher than ever. A lot of the older welders are retiring, and those jobs need to be replenished. It’s very important that we, as instructors, sell that fact and make sure these students know the sky is the limit as far as opportunities.”

MPCC’s new diesel technology instructor in North Platte is also an alum of the college.

Kelley Cole is originally from Dodge City, Kan. He spent much of his life working in banking before deciding to try something a little more hands-on. He found an opportunity through the Service Technician Sponsorship program offered by Titan Machinery.

“The company paid for all of my diesel technician training and tools,” Cole said. “I worked for them for four years in return. That’s part of the reason I chose to attend Mid-Plains. My wife and I had been living in Wichita and were looking for a smaller community. Titan has a store in North Platte, so by moving here, I was able to work and go to school at the same time.”

Cole graduated from the college’s Diesel Technology program in 2014. While he enjoyed the work, he eventually found that he needed a job that was more flexible for his growing family.

“Teaching has allowed me that flexibility while still enabling me to stay in a field I’ve come to love,” Cole said. “I’m looking forward to putting my own spin on the program and helping others learn. Diesel technology is a very important industry. A lot of people depend on technicians to keep their equipment running, which is why there are so many opportunities for those trained in this particular skill set. The trucking and agriculture industries won’t be going anywhere any time soon.”

NPCC’s new business instructor, Sean Tossi, draws from his life experiences when teaching. A career in the Aerospace/Defense Industry had him living all over the country – from California to Washington, D.C. – and doing everything from contracts, negotiations and logistics to project and supply chain management.

Prior to moving to North Platte, Tossi was living in the town where he was born and raised, Clarks Summit, Pa.

“I was teaching at a two-year technical college, but was looking for a new opportunity,” Tossi said. “MPCC impressed me from the get-go because of the wide variety of programs it offers and, specifically in the business department, the diverse set of courses available. I’m a big believer in the community college system. I truly believe community colleges are the backbone of our country.”

Tossi has been teaching for three years. It’s a profession that came naturally to him – his father is a professor who teaches mechanical engineering classes at Penn State University.

“Ever since I was a young child, I would go into my father’s classrooms and watch him,” Tossi said. “I knew right off the bat that I wanted to do that someday. I love the learning process – the transfer of knowledge and seeing the excitement on students’ faces when they grasp something new.”

He’s already had the opportunity to be a part of that with the start of fall classes at MPCC, and he’s excited for even more student interaction.

“I want to help students identify what their future career interests are, and for those who already have an idea of what they want to do, I want to help them solidify their goals,” Tossi said. “Whether that’s continuing on with their education or going into the industry, I’m looking forward to being part of that next step for them.”

Kristin Simpson is no stranger to Mid-Plains Community College. She has served as an adjunct instructor in North Platte for about three years and was also the interim music instructor last spring.

<a>Originally from Lincoln, she attended grad school at the University of Nebraska Omaha where she obtained a Master of Music degree with an emphasis in violin performance.</a>

She and her husband, Dr. Jonathan Simpson, moved to North Platte 12 years ago, and Kristin soon began looking for ways to be involved musically in the community.

“Music has always been a part of my life,” Kristin said. “I began piano lessons at age 7 and my great grandmother started me on violin before fifth grade. I was involved in choir and orchestra all through grade school, then have either accompanied or sung since then. I’ve taught choir, been in the pit and taken voice lessons.”

Kristin joined the North Platte Community College choir for fun and subsequently decided to try out for the select choir as well. Eventually, she became the accompanist for both choirs and for vocal lessons. In the spring of 2018, she began teaching for the college as an adjunct instructor.

“I think teaching chose me,” Kristin said. “It just came naturally and was a real source of joy. I love to show and teach and display. The more I learn about music, the more exciting it becomes, and I want to share that with people. Performing is great, but teaching is where I really light up - where I become who I really am.”

Her goal is not just to promote the music department, but to promote the college’s entire Associate of Fine Arts degree program.

“I’m excited to watch the program grow and am looking forward to collaborating with the art and theater instructors,” Kristin said. “I think we have something special, and I can’t wait to share that with the world.”

MPCC’s new first-year welding instructor in McCook taught health and physical education for McCook Public Schools for six years and also coached four sports.“I decided to take a different route that would provide more flexibility for my family,” Holthus said. “I’m originally from McCook, but both of my grandparents were dairy and hog farmers in Kansas, so I’ve been around welding for quite a few years and always had an interest in it.”Holthus graduated from the McCook welding program last year after working part-time as the program’s welding lab technician.“It has been a fun process to see things from the student perspective and now that of an instructor,” Holthus said. “I’m able to take a lot of things that I learned last year and implement them. I’m looking forward to building up the program and working with students who want to go into welding. The students are here because they want to be here, and because of that, they are pretty dedicated.”Holthus is especially excited about the opportunity to introduce local high school students to the field through a collaboration with McCook High School.“We work with about a dozen high school students on Tuesdays and Thursdays,” Holthus said. “Getting that experience early on is so valuable to them. They will be so far ahead in an industry where the demand is higher than ever. A lot of the older welders are retiring, and those jobs need to be replenished. MPCC introduces new instructors

A few months ago, we told you that the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act gave some flexibility to federal student loan borrowers. Understanding these options can help you make more informed decisions about <a href="https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/blog/2020/04/managing-your-bills-during-covid-19">paying your bills and prioritizing your debts</a>. The benefits <a href="https://www.ed.gov/news/press-releases/secretary-devos-fully-implements-president-trumps-presidential-memorandum-extending-student-loan-relief-borrowers-through-end-year">have been extended</a> until Dec. 31, 2020.

So, just to recap, what does the CARES Act mean for you if you have a federal student loan?

1. The CARES Act gives <a href="https://studentaid.gov/announcements-events/coronavirus">temporary payment relief</a> to borrowers with qualifying federal student loans. But some federal student loans don’t qualify – for example, older Family Federal Education Loan (FFEL) program loans or Perkins Loans that are owned by the school you attended. Contact your <a href="https://studentaid.gov/manage-loans/repayment/servicers#your-servicer">federal loan servicer</a> online or by phone to find out if your loans are eligible.&nbsp;

2. If your federal loans are covered, the U.S. Department of Education has automatically placed your loans into what’s called “administrative forbearance.” That means you can stop making payments on those loans right away, up through Dec. 31, 2020. If your payments automatically come out of your bank account, check if any payments have been processed since March 13, 2020. If they have, you may be able to <a href="https://studentaid.gov/announcements-events/coronavirus#borrower-questions">get a refund</a> as part of administrative forbearance.&nbsp;

3. If you want to keep making payments on your qualifying federal student loan through Dec. 31, the interest rate is now 0%. So any payments you make during the forbearance period may help you pay off your debt faster. If you’re on an income-based repayment program and/or a forgiveness program, you should check out <a href="https://studentaid.gov/announcements-events/coronavirus#borrower-questions">Federal Student Aid's Coronavirus page</a> to see which option makes sense for you.

4. If your federal student loans are in <a href="https://studentaid.gov/manage-loans/default#understanding-default">default</a>, the U.S. Department of Education has stopped making collection calls, and sending letters or billing statements through Dec. 31, 2020. And if your federal loans were in default and your employer continues to garnish your wages, you’ll get a refund.&nbsp;

●Get a complete list of your private and federal student loans by&nbsp;pulling your credit report. (In fact, you can get your report for free&nbsp;every week.)&nbsp;Read through it&nbsp;and find your student loans, taking note of the companies that are your lenders or loan servicers. NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-A North Platte man was seriously injured after he jumped from a North Platte viaduct.

According to North Platte police, at around 12:29 pm on September 12, officers and North Platte Fire and Rescue responded to the report of someone jumping of the Poplar Street viaduct.

Police say, upon arrival, officers located the victim who was conscious at the time.&nbsp;

Police say after speaking to the victim and witnesses, it was determined that the subject had exited a vehicle and jumped of the viaduct.

The man was transported to Great Plains Health with serious injuries before being transferred to an Omaha hospital.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Three more state corrections employees have tested positive for the coronavirus, state prisons officials said.

An employee at the Nebraska State Penitentiary in Lincoln and two employees at the state Diagnostic and Evaluation Center are the latest to test positive for COVID-19, the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services said in a news release Saturday.

With the new cases, a total of 85 state prisons workers across the state have now tested positive for the virus. Sixty-three of those have recovered.

Officials said that anyone who had close contact with the ill employees will be notified and directed to quarantine until they are cleared by a doctor.

The agency said on its website that 184 inmates across the state had tested positive for the coronavirus as of Friday. Officials said 126 of those positive cases have been found at the State Penitentiary in Lincoln.

Health officials said Nebraska has now confirmed 38,108 cases of coronavirus since the pandemic began, including 267 new cases reported Saturday. There have also been 434 deaths.

The seven-day rolling average of daily new cases in Nebraska has risen over the past two weeks from 258.57 new cases per day on Aug. 29 to 311.43 new cases per day on Sept. 12.

3 more Nebraska prisons employees test positive for virus

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-Anyone who has spent any time living in North Platte knows the name, Dr. Lee Lamberty.

Dr. Leland Lamberty passed away on Saturday, September 12, 2020, at Great Plains Health in North Platte.

After being admitted to the hospital with complications from COVID-19 in late-August, Dr. Lamberty was placed on a ventilator on September 4, according to family and friends.

Dr. Lamberty was in practice at Great Plains Family Medicine. He graduated from the University of Nebraska School of Medicine in 1971 and has practiced family medicine since.

Longtime Great Plains Health physician, Leland Lamberty, MD, died Saturday, September 12 due to complications of COVID-19.

“Dr. Lamberty was loved and respected by all who worked with him,” said Mel McNea, Great Plains Health chief executive officer. “His presence on our medical staff and in the community will be missed. He was a visionary, a mentor and a friend to many. He truly loved practicing medicine and serving his patients and it showed.”

Dr. Lamberty’s Covid-19 condition is believed to be the result of community-spread. He was a firm believer in the effectiveness of personal protective equipment and never wavered from wearing it while serving patients in the clinic.&nbsp;

Dr. Lamberty established Family Medicine Associates in 1973. He built a thriving practice and truly helped grow prim

“Nebraska’s transportation system, our airports and air capabilities greatly impact the economic health and quality of life of the state,” said NDOT Director Kyle Schneweis. “I want to thank the Trump Administration and the Nebraska Federal Delegation for recognizing the impact and supporting aviation. Not only will this funding provide airports with needed safety improvements it will also fund NDOT’s Aviation System Plan to help us evaluate the aviation needs of the state and help grow Nebraska.”&nbsp;

Ann Richart, Director of Aeronautics, explained “AIP grants are vital to Nebraska airports. This year especially, airports are struggling with revenue shortfalls resulting from COVID-19 and these grants will help support needed improvements. According to police, on July 30, 2020, 17-year-old Aracely Sanchez was reported to have run away from her home in North Platte.

She is 5'2", 120 pounds, brown hair and brown eyes.

Police continue to seek information on missing North Platte teenager

McCook Community College will host a POW/MIA remembrance ceremony Sept. 18 in conjunction with National POW/MIA Recognition Day. The event is open to the public, and military veterans are encouraged to attend.

Activities will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the college’s flagpole then will move to the north side of McMillen Hall where students will speak with vets in groups of four to five. In case of inclement weather, discussions will be moved to the Student Union. The event is expected to conclude by 9:30 a.m.

“McCook Community College appreciates the sacrifices of our American servicemen and women, and this is a way to pay our respects to both prisoners of war and those missing in action,” said Brian Obert, area dean of student life. “Veterans and community members are invited to join us to help honor POWs/MIAs and share personal accounts with our students.”

The Bridge to Success students and students in one section of the College Success class are helping to coordinate the ceremony.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A POW/MIA flag will fly between the American and Nebraska flags on the MCC campus throughout the day as well as at&nbsp;the North Platte Community College North Campus and Mid-Plains Community College campuses in Broken Bow, Ogallala and Valentine.

Multiple fire engines, helicopters and planes will be traveling in and around the area into Monday, officials said, with active fire exercises in the Cedar Canyon and Buffalo Creek Wildlife Management Areas.

The training provides firefighters with experience needed for wildland firefighting certifications.

Deputy Bailey, age 53, suffered a heart attack Tuesday evening, passing away&nbsp;on September 11, 2020. Troy was a 33-year&nbsp;veteran law enforcement officer having served Lancaster County for 25 years; Lexington Police Department for 4 1/2 years, Buffalo County Sheriff's Office for a year and Nebraska Department of Correctional Services for 2 years. Troy served in a variety of positions at the Sheriff's Office, including his latest assignment in our Civil Division;&nbsp;he also served as a Patrol Officer, Court Security, Narcotics Investigator, a Field Training Officer, a Defensive Tactics instructor, as a member of our Honor Guard, the deputy sheriff representative on the Lancaster County Merit Commission, Sergeant At Arms for the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #29, and a member of the Tactical Response Unit. &nbsp;

Troy was a 1985 graduate of Holdrege High School, attended Peru State College and UNL.&nbsp;

Troy was an avid outdoorsman, especially Goose hunting. He was well known for making his own Goose calls. He was an enthusiastic&nbsp;triathlete.&nbsp;

Troy is survived by his fiance Danielle Zabawa, Daughters Rachel and Taylor and son Trevor, grandsons Beau and Brooks, parents Steven and Connie, and sisters Tracie&nbsp;and Tiffanie&nbsp;of Holdrege, along with a host of brothers and sisters in brown and blue.

Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home is handling&nbsp;arrangements. Visitation will be held Monday, September 14th, 2020, from 4:00 P.M. - 6:00 P.M. at the funeral home with Services to be held at Horizon Church,&nbsp;3200 Granger Parkway, time to be announced.
