For the March 24 Mega Millions drawing, a $1 million winning ticket was sold at Mai's Market (formerly known as Schmick’s Market), 1340 West O Street in Lincoln. The ticket matched all five winning white ball numbers (02, 08, 16, 18, 31) from the March 24 drawing.

Winning Nebraska Lottery Lotto tickets expire 180 days after the drawing. This winning Mega Millions ticket expires Sunday, September 20. All Lottery offices will be closed, so the holder of this winning ticket must claim the prize by 5 p.m. CT on Friday, September 18.

$1 million Powerball winning ticket sold in Lincoln expires soon

LINCOLN, Neb.-The University of Nebraska Lincoln has announced the suspension of several Greek chapters following large gatherings on Labor Day.

According to a statement from the University, several Greek chapters have been placed on "immediate temporary suspension" effective on Tuesday.

The houses that were suspended include; Alpha Omicron Pi, Alpha Xi Delta, Delta Gamma, Kappa Alpha Theta, Phi Delta and Sigma Phi Epsilon.

The statement said the suspensions were based on reports, including photos and videos, that depicted large gatherings on house properties on the evening of September 7. University officials say the gatherings showed attendees with no face coverings or physical distancing, which is a violation of local COVID-19 health directives and university policy regarding COVID-19.

"I am very disappointed in the behavior that has now required us to take these measures," said Chancellor Ronnie Green. "This kind of activity placed the health of others and the community at risk. It is seriously important that our students adhere to our health protocols and policies. if they refuse to do so, the university is left with no choice but to pursue disciplinary measures."

Officials say, during the suspension, the chapters may not participate in, attend or organize any functions, activities or events, or participate in university-wide events as an organization.

Officials say an investigation in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct will be conducted and disciplinary proceedings may follow.

UNL suspends 6 Greek chapters after larger gatherings with no masks or physical distancing

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-The West Central District Health Department reported six new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in their jurisdiction on Tuesday.

Officials say five of the cases are in Lincoln County and one case is in Hooker County. Officials say three of the new cases are "community spread" and three are considered "under investigation."

WCDHD says two of the cases reported today are from September 5, three are from September 6 and three are from September 8.

After further investigation, two cases previously identified as residents of the WCDHD jurisdiction were transferred to the appropriate health department.

WCDHD reports 5 new COVID cases in Lincoln County, 1 in Hooker County

America is known as the Land of Opportunity and nowhere is that more true than here in Nebraska.&nbsp; Even as we grapple with the challenge of the pandemic, we’ve been hard at work to create and attract great-paying jobs to the Good Life. &nbsp;These jobs help families send their kids to school, own their own home and car, or go on that family vacation.&nbsp; They make it appealing for young Nebraskans to stay in our state after graduation.&nbsp; These jobs also provide the dignity and enjoyment of rewarding work.

As we continue to return to a more normal life, businesses are creating great-paying jobs here in the Good Life.&nbsp; Last week, I attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony for Scoular’s new Petsource facility in Seward. &nbsp;It’s a great example of how value-added agriculture is growing Nebraska. &nbsp;The $50-million facility is bringing about 100 jobs to Seward, and it will be sourced with Nebraska beef.&nbsp; So it’s not only creating great job opportunities in manufacturing, but also increasing opportunities for our livestock producers.

Last month, I joined the groundbreaking for Vireo, a company investing in Plattsmouth to produce an immune support supplement.&nbsp; The project is projected to bring $15 million of investment in Nebraska and will bring up to 200 new jobs to the area.&nbsp; It’s one of the largest investments in the Plattsmouth area in recent memory and great news for Cass County.

These are just a couple of recent examples of jobs being created across the state as we get Nebraska growing.&nbsp; Throughout my administration, we’ve been focused on creating a climate favorable to job growth, and we’re maintaining that focus as pandemic restrictions loosen.&nbsp; Our state routinely ranks atop lists of the best states in America for business. These strong rankings demonstrate that Nebraska is a great place for growth.&nbsp; Even so, no company invests in a generic place called Nebraska.&nbsp; They choose to do business with specific leaders whom they respect and trust.&nbsp; And they select communities where they’ve experienced friendliness and hospitality. &nbsp;From Seward to Sidney and everywhere in between, Nebraska has hundreds of welcoming, well-led communities that are experiencing growth.

In my time in office, we’ve built on four pillars to grow Nebraska: 1) developing our people, 2) being easy to do business with, 3) controlling spending to deliver tax relief, and 4) promoting Nebraska domestically and internationally. &nbsp;This four-part strategy has been very successful.

According to the most recent numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Nebraska has the second-lowest unemployment in the country at 4.8%.&nbsp; Our metro areas in Lincoln, Omaha, and Sioux City are all outperforming regional peers in providing employment.&nbsp; Each has an unemployment rate under 6%, which is significantly lower than in other Midwestern cities: Kansas City (7.6%), Denver (7.8%), Minneapolis (8.2%), and Chicago (12.0%).&nbsp;

Nebraska ranks number one in the nation in employment rate among adults (ages 16 and older). &nbsp;We’re the only state where more than two-thirds of adults are actively working.&nbsp; Compared to the 67% of adults employed in Nebraska, only 52% of adults work in Arkansas and in New York.

While we’re doing comparatively well, there are still many Nebraskans who have lost work or seen their business, farm, or ranch endure financial hardship.&nbsp; The State put $85 million of the federal assistance we received from the Coronavirus Relief Fund into critical services such as food security, shelter, and behavioral health care.&nbsp; We allocated $330 million of additional funds to help businesses and livestock producers impacted by the pandemic.&nbsp; We also shored up our Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund to ensure our ability to provide benefits to Nebraskans who are out of work.

Last week, the Nebraska Department of Labor (NDOL) announced that the State is applying for Lost Wage Assistance Funds from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.&nbsp; This will allow NDOL to pay an additional $300 in weekly unemployment benefits to Nebraskans whose livelihood has been affected by the coronavirus.&nbsp; Qualified claimants will receive the benefits for the weeks ending August 1st, August 8th, and August 15th.&nbsp;

2021 Nebraska Passport stop application now open

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Former Nebraska Republican Party chairman and former Omaha City Council member Chuck Sigerson died Sunday after a decade-long battle with complications from a heart attack and stroke, his family said. He was 75.

Sigerson led the Nebraska GOP from 1995 until 2001, a period that saw Republicans establish dominance among the top elected positions in the state. It included the election of Chuck Hagel in 1996 to replace Democrat Jim Exon as U.S. senator and of Mike Johanns as governor in 1998 to replace Democrat Ben Nelson.

In 2001, Sigerson won election to the Omaha City Council and was elected to two more terms before a heart attack and stroke in 2010 forced him to retire.

Sigerson's political career wasn't without scandal. He was one of two local officials accused in 2003 of inappropriately touching a teenage girl as she wore a mascot costume at a Red Robin restaurant in Omaha. A jury deadlocked on a disturbing the peace charge filed against Sigerson, and prosecutors did not refile it.

Sigerson is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Sigerson; son, Andrew Sigerson; daughter, Anthea Swanson; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Visitation will be held Thursday evening and a memorial service will take place Friday at Christ Community Church in Omaha. He will be buried at Omaha National Cemetery.

A jury deadlocked on a disturbing the peace charge filed against Sigerson, and prosecutors did not refile it.Sigerson is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Sigerson; son, Andrew Sigerson; daughter, Anthea Swanson; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.Visitation will be held Thursday evening and a memorial service will take place Friday at Christ Community Church in Omaha. The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office has concluded a Nationwide Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over high visibility enforcement campaign. The $8,000 grant was provided by the Nebraska Department of Highway Safety to place more Deputies on the Road August 21st through September 7th to help reduced traffic related fatalities in Lincoln County.

During the grant Deputies conducted one hundred forty-eight traffic stops and twenty-three motorist assist. The stops resulted in four drivers being arrested for Driving Under the Influence, eleven fugitives being arrested, nine felony arrests, six arrests for possession of methamphetamines, the recovery of a stolen vehicle and stolen firearm.

Additionally twenty-seven speeding citations were issued as well as three citations for driving under suspension, two citations for minor in possession of alcohol, three citations for possession of marijuana, one citation for open container, five citations for no proof of insurance, three citations for no operator’s license, one citation for leaving the scene of an accident and six citations for possession of drug paraphernalia.

OMAHA, Neb.-For the 20th&nbsp;straight year, student enrollment at the University of Nebraska Medical Center set a record high with 4,247 students enrolled for the 2020-2021 school year. This represents an increase of 192&nbsp;students, or 4.7% over last year's record of 4,055.&nbsp;The increase of 192 students is the biggest increase at UNMC since it added 249 students in 2010.&nbsp;

“Our enrollment numbers reflect the hard work and perseverance that our deans and student recruitment offices have shown over the past year. I could not be more proud and grateful,” Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, MD, said. “This increase also is indicative of our growing reputation as a leading academic health science center. In short, students want to learn – both in-person and remotely – from the quality faculty members here at UNMC.”

Dele Davies, MD, senior vice chancellor for academic affairs and dean for graduate studies, said the enrollment this year is “truly remarkable.”

“It’s gratifying to see, as we appreciate and have been eyewitnesses to the major challenges many families have faced as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic,” Dr. Davies said.&nbsp; “A substantial&nbsp;component -- 42% of the increase in enrollment -- was due to an uptick in students pursuing online programs, led by strong interest in the College of Public Health with a very high demand for the online master of public health degree.”

Dr. Davies attributed the enrollment increase to several factors, including:

There was a 16% decrease in international students due to COVID-19-related travel restrictions.

Below are enrollment highlights. Please note that some students are enrolled in dual programs.

College of Dentistry The College of Dentistry admitted 53 new dental students and 24 new dental hygiene students. The total student enrollment is 299, including 41 post-graduate students. Of the incoming students, 40 are from rural areas and 37 are from cities. For dental hygiene, it’s 12 rural and 12 urban students.&nbsp;There were 527 applications for the 53 slots in this year’s dental class.

College of Medicine There are 131 new students entering their first year of medical school, bringing the total enrollment to 514, which includes 32 students in the M.D./Ph.D. Scholars Program. The new students in the college, about 89% of whom are Nebraska residents, were selected from a total of 1,655 applicants. There are 616 resident physicians training at UNMC.

College of Nursing The College of Nursing enrolled 1,129 students across UNMC’s five campuses in Omaha, Lincoln, Kearney, Scottsbluff and Norfolk. This represents a 3.9% growth over the past year.

College of Pharmacy The college admitted 59 new students with an average GPA of 3.59. Of these new students, 83% are Nebraska residents with 59% coming from rural areas. The new students bring the total enrollment in the four-year program to 237 students.

College of Public Health Enrollment for the College of Public Health’s professional programs tops 272, an increase of 51% over last year’s 180 students. This year’s students include 236 master’s degree students and 36 certificate/non-degree students. Of the 169 incoming students, 39% are residents of Nebraska. Non-resident students are represented by 34 different states.

College of Allied Health Professions A total of&nbsp;686&nbsp;students are enrolled in the college, including online students. Campus-based enrollment increased by 8% over 2019-20, and about 20% over the past three years. The college has students in 14 different programs.

Graduate Studies Graduate Studies enrollment is 494 students which represents a 1% decrease over last fall.&nbsp;Graduate Studies offers advanced instruction leading to Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in fields ranging from the basic biomedical sciences to public health to patient-oriented research. Among all UNMC graduate students, 74 percent are enrolled in Ph.D. programs.

Munroe-Meyer Institute Munroe-Meyer Institute (MMI) is providing interdisciplinary training, course work and practicum experiences in research and patient care to 340 students enrolled in undergraduate, master’s and doctoral programs from universities in Nebraska and across the country, including UNMC. There are 240 new trainees this year. This includes 24 master's level students, 24 doctoral level students, 24 interns and 18 post-doctoral fellows. (Since most students participating in these programs are enrolled at other University of Nebraska institutions and are not UNMC students, they are not counted in UNMC enrollment numbers.)

UNMC enrollment at 4,247 sets record for 20th straight year

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-Local law enforcement made several arrests after it was reported that occupants of a vehicle were firing guns out of the window in rural Lincoln County.

According to the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, on September 7, 2020 at 5:25 p.m., the Lincoln County 911 Center received a report of a vehicle traveling on East State Farm Road. The occupants of the vehicle were shooting guns out the window while the vehicle was in motion.

A description of the vehicle was given to all area law enforcement and the vehicle was located and stopped by North Platte Police Officers at B and Jeffers Street. Deputies arrived and found the vehicle was occupied by five young males. Deputies smelled burnt Marijuana inside the vehicle and searched it.

Deputies located two separate pistols in the vehicle, one of which was recently stolen in Brady, NE. A controlled substance was found in the vehicle as well. All five of the young men were arrested for various charges.

LCSO says 18-year-old North Platte resident Rocky J. Navarro was arrested and placed in the Lincoln County Detention Center for Carrying a Concealed Weapon and Contributing to the Delinquency of a Child. 18-year-old North Platte resident Marcelles L. Sanchez-Rodriguez was arrested and placed in the Lincoln County Detention Center for Carrying a Concealed Weapon, Contributing to the Delinquency of a Child and Discharging a Firearm from the Roadway.

The other three males also from North Platte, NE. were under the age of eighteen. These three males were charged with multiple crimes to include; Carrying a Concealed Weapon, Discharging a Firearm from the Roadway, Use of a Firearm to Commit a Felony, Possession of a Controlled Substance and Uncontrollable Juveniles. The case remains under investigation and additional charges may follow.

&nbsp;Is that runny nose and cough COVID or just your run-of-the-mill seasonal allergies?

Doctors at the University of Kansas Health System tried to give viewers tips on how to distinguish between the two during their daily news briefing Wednesday.

Dr. Steve Stites, chief medical officer, and Dr.&nbsp;Dana Hawkinson, medical director of infection prevention and control, were joined by&nbsp;Dr. Selina Gierer, specialist in&nbsp;allergy, immunology and rheumatology medicine, and&nbsp;ear, nose and throat surgeon Dr. Keith Sale.

Gierer said Kansas has reached its peak allergy season. Children are also returning to school and can be exposed to viral infections.

&nbsp;"It is always a challenge when we go back to school when kids get any viral infection on top of season allergies trying to pick a part what's an illness and what is an allergy symptom," she said.

Itchy and water eyes as well as sneezing are common symptoms of allergies, but not of COVID-19.

Then there is an overlap zone for both allergies and COVID,&nbsp;Gierer said.

These include cough, fatigue, headache, sore throat, shortness of breath and runny nose.&nbsp;

"Ultimately, if you are having fever, if your symptoms are not typical for your allergy symptoms,"&nbsp;Gierer said, "perhaps this is not a typical allergy season for you.

"If you are having cough, if you are having congestion and you are having change in your sense of smell, it's time for you to be thinking about contacting your doctor to get tested for coronavirus."

She suggested keeping control of your allergy symptoms and avoiding people who are sick.&nbsp;

Monitor your triggers, such as dust, mold, pollen or animals. Monitor the local pollen count. Stay on your allergy medications.

&nbsp;"If you know you are going to be doing yard work, and the next day you feel itchy and drippy and sneezy, you can probably attribute that to your allergies and not an acute onset of coronavirus,"&nbsp;Gierer said.

Asthma is an underlying medical condition that increases the likelihood of complications from coronavirus. However, it is on the lower end of the range of complicating factors.

Asthma is much less common to cause complications than obesity and hypertension,&nbsp;Gierer said.

However, one of the biggest triggers of asthma is a viral infection. She said it is also important to keep your asthma under control by staying on medications, avoiding triggers and keeping a 30-day supply of medication on hand.

Dr. Sale saw a patient in his clinic who was having typical symptoms for allergies, such as a runny nose, but was not getting better on her normal medications.

She thought she had a sinus infection or something else. A friend from out of town had visited the week before. She was tested for COVID and was surprised with a positive COVID test, Sale said.

Sale said his office is taking COVID precautions, including using PPE, hand sanitizing between patients and patients wearing masks unless their nose or mouth is being examined.

Gierer said allergy medication or a rescue inhaler will probably not help with COVID-19 symptoms.&nbsp;

Sale said fatigue may be common to both allergies and COVID, but the persistence of the symptom may be a sign of the later.

Gierer said, "If the allergy medications are not working, that might trigger you to think there is something else going on."

Hawkinson said scientists are working to combine testing for flu and COVID-19. He said if a patient has a nasal swab for COVID-19, a lab could use that same sample to test for flu and RSV.

RSV, is a common respiratory virus that usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms. Most people recover in a week or two, but RSV can be serious, especially for infants and older adults, according the Centers for Disease Control.

The flu season is in full swing in South Africa and Australia and has been lighter this year there than in years past,&nbsp;Hawkinson said. He said that could be in part to mask use and increased hand washing.

KU Med is working on mass flu vaccination at this time.

Gierer urged members of the public to get flu vaccines. That is usually recommended starting in October.

The doctors also gave tips on staying in good general health.

You can naturally boost your immune system by getting adequate sleep, eating a healthy diet, as well as hand washing and staying away from people who are sick.

Those tips can help with COVID-19, flu or RSV.

Sale also said caring for your mental health can have an effect on maintaining physical health, which includes socializing in a safe way.

Allergies vs. COVID: KU doctors give tips on knowing the difference

McCook, Neb.-Tragedy struck at the McCook Wastewater Treatment Plant after an accident left two employees dead.

According to a news release from the city, at approximately 12:17 p.m., Sunday, September 6, officers from the McCook Police Department responded to the City of McCook Wastewater Treatment Plant located on Ravenswood Road, which is east of the McCook City limits. &nbsp;A welfare check was made after one of the employees did not return home after a routine check of the facilities.

The release says as officers responded to the wastewater facility, they observed personal items of one of the employees left outside of what is referred to as the sludge pumphouse, prompting officers to check inside for the workers. Officers then discovered two deceased victims inside the sludge pumphouse and secured the scene. Due to toxic gasses and hazardous materials inside the facility, McCook Fire and Rescue and the Red Willow Western Rural Fire Department Hazardous Material Team were dispatched to the scene for recovery of the deceased employees.

Officials say once the bodies were recovered the victims were positively identified as City of McCook employees Larry Dicke, age 65, and Kenneth Keslin, age 43. &nbsp;The McCook Police Department’s investigation is ongoing at this time. Further details will be shared as more information is learned.

Accident at McCook Wastewater Plant leaves 2 dead

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska hospitals are asking for more federal aid to help recover from the financial toll the coronavirus pandemic has taken.

Nebraska Hospital Association officials say the pandemic has meant increased costs and a decline in revenue for hospitals, the Omaha World-Herald&nbsp;<a href="https://omaha.com/lifestyles/health-med-fit/nebraska-hospitals-have-taken-big-financial-hit-during-the-pandemic-group-says/article_9edd0c36-e4d7-5c65-aa36-ec472ac40993.html?utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter_OWHnews" target="_blank">reported</a>.

The revenue drop is partly because Nebraska temporarily banned elective procedures to save hospital resources when the virus first hit the state. Some patients also avoided hospitals out of fear of catching COVID-19 there.

Increased costs for hospitals included protective gear, COVID-19 testing sites, and medical equipment and medicine to treat the virus.

Outpatient surgeries dropped by 70% in April compared to the same time last year, according to data from 80% of the Nebraska Hospital Association's members. Emergency room visits declined by 44% in April.

Numbers rebounded by June but were still lower than the year before, the newspaper reported.

Nebraska hospitals have already received some federal aid. But the hospital association's vice president for advocacy, Andy Hale, said it's not enough.

A University of Nebraska Medical Center study found that 53% of Nebraska hospitals were distressed before the pandemic even hit.

"Hospitals are still recovering as much as everyone else . due to this pandemic," Hale said.

Statewide, new coronavirus cases for the seven-day period that ended Sunday totaled 2,052, an average of 293 a day, according to an Associated Press analysis of data from Johns Hopkins University's COVID-19 tracking project.

Cases are spiking in Lancaster County, home of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Local officials attributed the uptick to university students' return to school, the newspaper&nbsp;<a href="https://omaha.com/lifestyles/health-med-fit/white-house-adviser-urges-caution-over-holiday-says-nebraska-doing-ok-on-virus-spread/article_63c8c1d6-b948-52dc-bba7-a3078cf6567b.html?utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter_OWHnews" target="_blank">reported</a>.

The positive test rate in the county increased from 6.8% in the week of Aug. 22 to about 13.4% the first week of September.

Lincoln Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird said she's also concerned about a potential uptick in cases caused by partying over Labor Day weekend. Lancaster County cases spiked after July Fourth, she said.

"In short, we are concerned this holiday weekend could lead to a similar spike in cases (like) what we saw over the Fourth of July weekend," she said.

No West Nile virus cases in Nebraska so far this year

LINCOLN, Neb. — A Colorado man died in a boating accident Saturday afternoon at Lake McConaughy State Recreation Area. A Colorado Springs woman was injured in the same accident.

Kevin Kiesow, 53, of Colorado Springs was taken to Ogallala Community Hospital, where he later was pronounced dead. Kim Lampe, 55, also of Colorado Springs, was admitted to the hospital and is recovering.

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission conservation officers responded to the report of an accident at 3:51 p.m. near Arthur Bay on the lake and found Kiesow being given CPR. According to reports gathered in the investigation, Campe had fallen overboard from a pontoon boat, and Kiesow, her boyfriend, had jumped in to rescue her. He then had to be rescued by others on the pontoon and another boat nearby.

Wind speeds at the time were 15 mph with 20 mph gusts, making lake conditions rough.

Man dies, woman injured in boating accident at Lake Mac

KEARNEY, Neb.-A Kearney man has been arrested after police say he fired at an occupied dwelling.

According to Kearney police, at approximately 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 25, 2020, Kearney Police were called to investigate shots fired at an occupied dwelling in the area of 107 Huron Drive. 

Police say upon arrival officers found a damaged back window of a vehicle parked in the driveway, along with damages on the front of the residence.  Both damages were consistent with being caused by a shotgun, possibly fired from the street toward the residence. At the time of the incident the residence was occupied, there were no injuries reported.   

On September 2, Kearney Police Investigators obtained an arrest warrant for Richard D. Fries, for the charges of shooting into an occupied dwelling, a Class 1C felony and possession of a firearm by a felon, a Class 1D felony. 

 The arrest warrant was served on Fries while he is currently being held at the Lincoln County Jail in North Platte for unrelated charges.

LINCOLN, Neb.-A Lincoln man who gave an impassioned speech at a Lincoln City Council meeting on changing the name of chicken wings, crashed a Scott Frost news conference on Friday.

Ander Christensen became an internet sensation after he suggested that Lincoln lead the way in changing the name of chicken wings to "saucy nugs" and various other names.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - In an age of growing divisive political discourse across the country, a Nebraska man is drawing attention for his impassioned plea to take action - against boneless chicken wings.

Video of Ander Christensen's satirical rant before the Lincoln City Council on Monday pleading to ban the "boneless chicken wing" moniker has garnered widespread attention on social media and news sites.

Christensen, who is the son of a council member, made his case that the meat in boneless wings doesn't come from a chicken's wing at all, but from its breast.

"We've been living a lie for far too long," he told the council.

Instead, he suggested the dish could be renamed, "buffalo-style chicken tenders, wet tenders, saucy nugs or trash."

His plea, of course, was for the children.

"Our children are afraid of having bones attached to their meat, which is where meat comes from. It grows on bones!" he said. "We need to teach them that the wings of a chicken are from a chicken, and it's delicious."
