Nebraskaland Days announces 2021 (2020 redux) concert lineups

OMAHA-As the world watches, new information about COVID-19 is coming to light.

The Great Plains Institutional Development Award&nbsp;(IDeA) Clinical &amp; Translational Research (CTR) Network headquartered at the University of Nebraska Medical Center has received a $180,000 grant to participate in a national effort to collect and share data on COVID-19-related patient outcomes for use in research.

The funding from the&nbsp;National Institutes of General Medical Sciences&nbsp;will support data transfer to the&nbsp;<a href="https://ncats.nih.gov/n3c" target="_blank">National COVID Cohort Collaborative (N3C)</a>&nbsp;Data Enclave -- a registry of COVID-19-related information from patients across the country. The enclave will enable researchers with data use agreements from UNMC and&nbsp;seven other IDeA-CTR networks --&nbsp;with support&nbsp;totaling more than $1.4 million --&nbsp;&nbsp;to track the disease in patients across the country.

N3C will help scientists develop insight into potential risk factors, protective factors and long-term health consequences. Currently, 57 sites across the country will share data&nbsp;from electronic health records of individuals (identity of individuals will not be included) tested for COVID-19, including demographics, symptoms, laboratory test results, procedures, medications, medical conditions, physical measurements and more.

Matthew Rizzo, MD, Frances &amp; Edgar Reynolds Chair and professor in the UNMC Department of Neurological Sciences, in collaboration with James McClay, MD, said he and his team rapidly responded to the challenge recently last week by being the first in the region to contribute to the enclave. Dr. McClay is principal investigator of UNMC’s research data warehouse and director of the Biomedical Informatics Core of the Great Plains IDeA-CTR.

“Being nimble, pivoting quickly and marshalling resources to face down COVID helped create this gold mine for all kinds of answers for all kinds of questions,” Dr. Rizzo said. “Some of the questions we want to answer are what treatments work, what are the long-term side effects, is there a greater rate of cognitive problems, who’s at greater risk, will the virus have consequences down the road? It’s unprecedented to get so many networks together quickly so we can pool data to help figure out what is going on with this disease and the pandemic.”

By aggregated counts of anticipated positive COVID-19 patients, the N3C Data Enclave is anticipated to be one of the world’s largest collections of data on COVID-19 patients by the end of October.

Dr. Rizzo said the registry also ensures that the data represents the diversity of the country so researchers can understand and address geographic and population disparities during the pandemic. In addition, this approach, he said, creates a robust framework to gain knowledge to face challenges beyond COVID-19.

“There are many opportunities in the future,” Dr Rizzo said. “We could apply this national strategy for gathering information on COVID to gain comprehensive information on critical areas such as mind and brain health and many medical disorders. UNMC COVID-19 registry grant to provide gold mine of information

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - The number of deaths linked to the coronavirus has topped 500 in Nebraska, and more people are hospitalized with the virus than ever before.

The state reported four new deaths and 404 new cases of coronavirus on Sunday to give Nebraska 501 deaths and 47,807 cases of the virus since the pandemic began.

The number of hospitalizations for the virus jumped to 249 on Saturday and remained at that level on Sunday. Previously, the number of people being treated in Nebraska hospitals peaked at 232 on May 27, according to the state's&nbsp;<a href="https://experience.arcgis.com/experience/ece0db09da4d4ca68252c3967aa1e9dd" target="_blank">online virus tracker.</a>

But even with the high number of hospitalizations, Nebraska said 33% of the state's intensive care beds and 78% of the ventilators remained available.

Last month, Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/pete-ricketts-lincoln-virus-outbreak-archive-nebraska-e280640ba95931e6020e21a974b11396" target="_blank">eliminated</a>&nbsp;nearly all of the state's social-distancing restrictions in favor of voluntary guidelines. Ricketts has said the hospital statistics show the state's medical facilities have not been overwhelmed with virus cases.

Nebraska continues to report a high rate of virus cases. The seven-day rolling average of the positivity rate in Nebraska has risen over the past two weeks from 11.86% on Sept. 20 to 13.49% on Sunday, according to an Associated Press analysis of data from Johns Hopkins University.

Nebraska virus hospitalizations hit new high over weekend

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - A political action committee that supports candidates for the Nebraska Public Power District's board is being scrutinized because it received a start-up loan from a group backed by several rural public power districts.

Several ratepayers and two NPPD board members have questioned whether the $7,500 loan the Nebraskans for Reliable and Affordable Electricity group received was proper. The Nebraska Accountability and Disclosure Commission is looking into the matter after several people filed complaints about the loan from the Nebraska Electric Generation and Transmission cooperative that is funded by several public utilities, the Lincoln Journal Star&nbsp;<a href="https://journalstar.com/news/local/govt-and-politics/nppd-directors-ratepayers-question-donation-from-electric-co-op-to-political-committee/article_1b079581-9639-5d83-bcb6-3a042aeb335a.html#tracking-source=home-top-story-1" target="_blank">reported</a>.

Kate High, a Lincoln woman who filed a complaint, said she doesn't believe money utility customers pay to a public utility should be directed to a political campaign.

"I can't get my electricity any other place - I'm locked into this," High said. "That's my light bill money they are using to make campaign contributions to someone I may or may not support."

But the general manager of the utility cooperative, Darin Bloomquist, said the loan complied with state law. Bloomquist said once the money from the utilities was paid to the cooperative, it became private money that could be used for political purposes. Bloomquist also serves as an assistant treasurer for the political action committee.

"Once the payment is remitted to me, it is no longer public funds," Bloomquist said. "We are a private company rendering a service, and this is totally within our purview."

Still, NPPD board member Gary Thompson of Clatonia said he doesn't think the payment was appropriate.

"I believe it's illegal to use public funds for the promotion of any candidate or issue," Thompson said. "You just don't do that. While (Nebraska Electric Generation and Transmission) is a private entity, they are using - exclusively - public funds to promote specific candidates."

The Nebraskans for Reliable and Affordable Electricity political action committee says it backs candidates who support using a variety of different fuels to generate electricity, not just wind and solar power. The group said on its website that it was created to counter the "tens of thousands of dollars in out-of-state money" spent in support of candidates who favor expanding wind and solar generation.

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is offering special antlerless deer hunting opportunities within Eugene T. Mahoney and Platte River state parks, as well as Schramm Park State Recreation Area.

Successful applicants will be issued a special access permit that allows them to hunt antlerless deer in designated areas on certain dates using specific equipment. Successful applicants and interested alternates must attend an orientation session in order to receive the access permit.

Applications, limited to one per person, will be accepted through 5 p.m. on Oct. 31. If more applications are received than can be accommodated, a drawing will be held Nov. 5.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska is seeing a sharp jump in the number of confirmed coronavirus cases, according to the state's online tracking portal.

State officials reported 621 new cases on Thursday evening, up from 520 the previous day. The number of daily cases is up from where it was in September and this summer. So far, 493 peopled have died from the virus.

Nebraska has confirmed 46,185 cases since the pandemic began, out of 464,576 people who have been tested. The hardest-hit counties continue to be Douglas, Lancaster and Sarpy, the state's most populated areas.

The state portal shows that 29% of Nebraska's hospital beds are available for virus patients, as are 26% of the intensive care units and 78% of the ventilators.

The increase comes weeks after Nebraska&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/pete-ricketts-lincoln-virus-outbreak-archive-nebraska-e280640ba95931e6020e21a974b11396" target="_blank">ended nearly all of its social-distancing restrictions</a>&nbsp;in favor of voluntary guidelines. Gov. Pete Ricketts has said the decision was based on the availability of hospital beds and ventilators, in keeping with his goal of not overwhelming medical facilities.

The change doesn't include Lincoln and surrounding Lancaster County.

Restrictions are still in effect for large indoor gatherings, such as concerts, meeting halls and theaters.

For most people,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/understanding-the-outbreak" target="_blank">COVID-19</a>, the disease caused by the coronavirus, causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - A new study shows that the agricultural economy in Nebraska remains resilient despite some recent down years.

<a href="https://journalstar.com/business/agriculture/unl-report-gauges-ags-impact-in-nebraska/article_1043db83-4d5d-5b61-96c3-e9daa31e76e1.html" target="_blank">The Lincoln Journal Star</a>&nbsp;reports that researchers at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln on Thursday released the 2017 Economic Impact of the Nebraska Agricultural Production Complex report. The report uses 2017 data because that was the year of the most recent Census of Agriculture.

The report found that agriculture accounts for nearly 34% of business sales, 22% of the gross state product and nearly a quarter of the state's jobs. Those figures were reported even though 2017 was the lowest-income year for Nebraska farmers and ranchers of the decade.

"Few other states have an economy with this degree of agricultural prominence," said Mike Boehm, vice chancellor for the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources and vice president of agriculture and natural resources for the University of Nebraska system. "Even as our cities grow and our economy diversifies, agriculture remains critically important to the economic prosperity of Nebraska, and it will long into the future."

Eagle seeks videographer for Nebraska coverage area

WCDHD officials move Community Risk Dial up, risk remains elevated

COZAD, Neb.-Bringing movies back to Cozad has been keeping the Cozad Development Corporation busy over the past year.&nbsp; The purchase of the historic Allen Opera House gave CDC the idea to convert the space into a three-screen movie theater.&nbsp; The owners of the Tiffany theater in Broken Bow promised to operate the theater if CDC would renovate and own the building.&nbsp;

The renovations were major since there was no electrical, plumbing, heating, or access to the entire second story.&nbsp; Raising $1.2 Million during 2020 has not been an easy task.&nbsp; A grant from the state of Nebraska covered nearly half, and CDC committed to a loan of $185,000.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; That left nearly $450,000 to raise locally.&nbsp; The Peter Kiewitt Foundation challenged CDC to a matching grant of $100,000.&nbsp; That meant if CDC could raise $350,000 from fundraising and sponsorships, Kiewitt would donate $100,000.&nbsp;

Fundraising was going well until March when COVID prevented any fundraising events or in-person meetings.&nbsp; Luckily 175 families, businesses, and individuals stepped up and sponsored seats. Paulsen Inc., Cozad Telephone, Homestead Bank, Waypoint Bank, Security First Bank, and a local family have sponsored the theaters and the community room.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The fundraising committee was approximately $40,000 away from receiving the challenge grant and Kiewitt had already graciously extended the deadline from June 1st&nbsp;until October 1st.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Home Agency, a full-line insurance company, is opening a branch office in Cozad, with Teresa Osborn as the local insurance agent. Being actively involved in the communities they serve has been an important aspect of their success in years past.&nbsp; When asked if The Home Agency would be interested in donating funds for the community theater, Teresa pitched the idea to the owner, Jim Baldonado.&nbsp; After being in contact with the CDC, Jim learned more about the theater project and pledged that not only The Home Agency would donate, but also his family and BHA Real Estate (a Baldonado owned company that serves Lexington, Johnson Lake, Cozad and surrounding areas) to reach the final amount needed.

“I was trying to play it cool when Jim was asking me questions about our theater project,” stated Jennifer McKeone, CDC Executive Director, “but actually my heart was beating so loud I thought he could probably hear it on the other side of the phone.&nbsp; Projects like this always require a lot of blind faith that you can meet your fundraising goals, but this has not been the best year for fundraising, movies, or timelines.&nbsp; I was beginning to panic we wouldn’t make our goal.”

The Home Agency is headquartered in Elwood, Nebraska. Jim Baldonado came to the company in 1986 and has grown it into what it is today with hard work, consistency, great employees, and even better customers. The Home Agency has offices in 20 locations across Nebraska, Colorado, Kansas, and Iowa. Movies are coming back to Cozad

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-NebraskaLand National Bank is once again showing their support of the Arts in North Platte by again sponsoring the Sheldon Art Exhibit at the Prairie Arts Center, 416 North Jeffers Street.

&nbsp; NebraskaLand National Bank has supported the Sheldon Statewide Exhibit for the last 22 years since the Bank’s establishment in 1998. 

While schools will not be able to tour the exhibit this year,&nbsp;Nebraskaland National Bank President and CEO Mike Jacobson felt it was still a cause worth supporting. 

“When you’re headquartered in a town, you can see how important it is to give back to the community and the impact that you’re making,” said Jacobson. " 

“When we first started [the Bank] I knew that we wanted to focus on youth and the arts, and bringing in events like this is really important to our community,” Jacobson added.

The exhibit’s theme this year is&nbsp;Compact Rhythms.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Phyllis Swigart, Publicity Chairman of the North Platte Art Study League, describes&nbsp;Compact Rhythms&nbsp;as “highlighting artists who utilize abstraction to find different ways of looking at the world around them.

The exhibit presents a variety of modes and styles of nonrepresentational art throughout the 20th&nbsp;century while focusing on artists who work on a smaller scale”.

The exhibition is open beginning October 2nd-28th&nbsp; from 11:00 a.m. -4:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

 </figure>NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-NebraskaLand National Bank is once again showing their support of the Arts in North Platte by again sponsoring the Sheldon Art Exhibit at the Prairie Arts Center, 416 North Jeffers Street.&nbsp; NebraskaLand National Bank has supported the Sheldon Statewide Exhibit for the last 22 years since the Bank’s establishment in 1998. While schools will not be able to tour the exhibit this year,&nbsp;Nebraskaland National Bank President and CEO Mike Jacobson felt it was still a cause worth supporting. “When you’re headquartered in a town, you can see how important it is to give back to the community and the impact that you’re making,” said Jacobson. " “When we first started [the Bank] I knew that we wanted to focus on youth and the arts, and bringing in events like this is really important to our community,” Jacobson added.The exhibit’s theme this year is&nbsp;Compact Rhythms.&nbsp;&nbsp;Phyllis Swigart, Publicity Chairman of the North Platte Art Study League, describes&nbsp;Compact Rhythms&nbsp;as “highlighting artists who utilize abstraction to find different ways of looking at the world around them. The exhibit presents a variety of modes and styles of nonrepresentational art throughout the 20th&nbsp;century while focusing on artists who work on a smaller scale”.The exhibition is open beginning October 2nd-28th&nbsp; from 11:00 a.m. -4:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

NebraskaLand National Bank continues to support the Arts in North Platte with Sheldon Exhibit

LINCOLN (NSP)-Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) may be wearing a pink patch in October to honor and support those fighting breast cancer.

The Pink Patch Project is a national effort that involves law enforcement agencies throughout the country, including many in the state of Nebraska. This is the third year that NSP has participated in the project.

“The Pink Patch Project is a phenomenal way for law enforcement agencies to support a cause that has touched the lives of so many people,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “I’m proud to wear a pink patch to honor breast cancer fighters, including our own Barb Klinetobe, who we lost earlier this year after a career of 40 years as an NSP dispatcher.”

Throughout October, troopers have the option to replace the standard NSP patch with a pink patch. NSP’s pink patch features the NSP logo in pink and black.

Pink NSP patches are also available for purchase by NSP civilian employees and members of the public at local NSP offices. All proceeds from sales of the pink NSP patches will go to benefit research and treatment of breast cancer.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - The economy continues to improve in nine Midwest and Plains states, but business remains slower than before the coronavirus pandemic began, according to a monthly survey of business leaders released Thursday.

The overall index for the region improved to 65.1 in September from August's already strong 60. The survey results are compiled into a collection of indexes ranging from zero to 100. Any score above 50 suggests growth, while a score below 50 suggests decline.

Creighton University economist Ernie Goss, who oversees the survey, said even with the positive growth in the economy, manufacturing output remains well below the level it was at before officials began imposing restrictions because of the coronavirus.

Job growth remains strong in the region, and the employment index improved to 61.8 in September from August's 54.8. Goss said the region's unemployment rate fell to 4.6% in September after hitting a high of 11% in May. Before the coronavirus outbreak began, unemployment in region was at 1.3%.

Business leaders are optimistic about the next six months. The confidence index remained high at 69.4 in September even though it declined slightly from August's 73.3.

The monthly survey covers Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma and South Dakota.
