HIP registration is required of residents age 16 and older and all nonresidents who plan to hunt migratory game birds in Nebraska between Aug. 1, 2020 and July 31, 2021. LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - A Democratic U.S. Senate candidate in Nebraska doubled down Wednesday on his promise to stay in the race, despite growing pressure to drop out after he sent&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/db5b8e0b714d76827262eb0381574312" target="_blank">sexually vulgar</a>&nbsp;text messages to a campaign staffer.

Chris Janicek said in a statement that he won't withdraw from the race, and he blamed the state's top Democratic leaders for the party's&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/2da07dc4abad3da8b59091d1d6ebe503" target="_blank">recent struggles</a>&nbsp;to win statewide office in Republican-dominated Nebraska. His comments came just days after the Nebraska Democratic Party endorsed one of Janicek's former primary opponents, Alisha Shelton, to try to unseat Republican U.S. Sen. Ben Sasse.

The endorsement won't necessarily stop Janicek, however, because he already won the Democratic nomination in May. State law doesn't allow party officials to remove him from the ballot without his consent.

"I am a proud Democrat," Janicek said in a Facebook posting and email sent to local news outlets. "Now is the time for you to realize that I am not going away."

Janicek has faced widespread criticism and pressure to withdraw ever since a campaign worker revealed the offensive text message to party officials and hired a lawyer.

The messages show that, after he won the nomination, Janicek wrote in a group text to campaign workers that he had gotten into an argument with the female staffer. He then asked whether the campaign should spend money on "getting her laid," and made crude references to group sex. The woman who was the target of his remarks was accidentally included on the text.

Janicek later admitted to sending the texts and said he repeatedly apologized to the woman. He has argued that, because he's openly gay, his comments shouldn't count as sexual harassment.

Nebraska Democratic Party Chairwoman Jane Kleeb has repeatedly called on Janicek bow out of the race and said the party won't offer any of its resources to his campaign. Even before the scandal, Janicek, who owns an Omaha cupcake bakery, wasn't likely to win because of the state's GOP leanings.

Janicek criticized Kleeb's management of the party, noting that the number of self-identified Democrats in Nebraska has slipped to a record-low 29% of registered voters. He said the party is "drowning in debt" and hasn't won a governor's race since Ben Nelson, who left office in 1999.

"When the party says they offer resources, I'd like to know what they are because our campaign hasn't seen any," he said in the statement.

A Nebraska Democratic Party spokesman declined to respond to Janicek's criticism, saying Kleeb stands by her original statement calling for him to withdraw.

Janicek's posting on Facebook drew a barrage of negative comments and calls for him to drop out of the race so that Shelton can become the nominee.

Nebraska Senate hopeful who sent vulgar texts declines exit

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Attempts to lower Nebraska's property taxes appeared to stumble yet again Wednesday after some state lawmakers argued that the newest package could hurt local K-12 schools by restricting their ability to tax.

Senators debated the bill for about three hours but ended up skipping over it without a vote, leaving its prospects unclear. The only way it's likely to return to the Legislature's agenda now is if leading supporters can show they have at least 33 votes to overcome a filibuster, a tall order given the opposition to the bill.

"It appears to me that we are heading toward an impasse," said Sen. Matt Williams, of Gothenburg. "If that horse can't finish the race, we need to saddle up a horse that can finish the race."

The proposal would substantially boost state funding for Nebraska's K-12 public schools, which are by far the largest consumers of property tax revenue.

Farmers, ranchers and homeowners argue that rising property valuations have shifted an ever-larger share of the cost onto their shoulders, especially in rural areas with huge swaths of agricultural land. Increasing state aid is designed to ease that burden.

The bill would also tighten restrictions on how much revenue school districts can generate locally through property taxes, drawing objections from school officials and teachers. School administrators have said they don't trust state officials to maintain their funding commitments, given the Legislature's history of belt-tightening to balance its budget in lean times.

"I don't think we have the money for this bill, and the money has to come from somewhere," said Sen. Wendy DeBoer, of Bennington, who led the filibuster. "I care about property tax relief, but I'm not going to do it on the backs of our students."

Sen. Lou Ann Linehan, who drafted the bill as chairwoman of the Legislature's Revenue Committee, said lawmakers need to pass it this year. She said home- and business owners in the state's biggest cities are starting to feel the pinch as well as their property values rise, leading to higher tax bills.

"If we do nothing, if we don't address this, this problem gets worse and worse," said Linehan, of Omaha.

Sen. Tom Briese, an Albion farmer, said property taxes continue to be the most pressing issue raised by constituents in his overwhelmingly rural district, and he criticized fellow lawmakers for failing to pass the bill.

"If everyday Nebraskans could vote on this, it would pass overwhelmingly," he said. "But instead we're doing it, and we're doing it with lobbyists and special interests in our ear."

Nebraska State Fair 1868 Foundation, responds to State Auditor’s Report

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska has seen a surge of people testing positive for coronavirus this week, according to state health officials.

The state health department's&nbsp;<a href="https://experience.arcgis.com/experience/ece0db09da4d4ca68252c3967aa1e9dd" target="_blank">online virus tracker</a>&nbsp;on Wednesday showed more than 600 new cases of the virus since the beginning of the week, including 264 cases on Monday and 343 on Tuesday. The state's total stood at 23,190 by Wednesday. The site also shows nine COVID-19 deaths so far this week, bringing the state's total to 310 since the outbreak began.

The increases come as at least one Omaha-area health system reported a testing policy change in the face of testing supply shortages. CHI Health announced Tuesday it would suspend its policy of testing patients for the virus ahead of elective procedures.

The system said Abbott Laboratories, which manufactures the supplies CHI Health uses for coronavirus testing, can't meet current demand for the supplies and informed CHI that it would limit shipment of those supplies over then next four to five weeks.

"By suspending pre-procedural tests, we are able to preserve tests for people experiencing symptoms in the communities we serve," CHI Health said in a news release.

CHI Health centers will continue to perform elective surgeries, despite the suspension in pre-procedure testing.

Snakes of Nebraska 'Zooming' to the Public

NEW YORK (AP) —Walmart Inc. said that it will be closing its namesake stores and Sam’s Clubs on Thanksgiving Day this year, saying that it wants to have its employees spend time with their families during the coronavirus.

The move, announced Tuesday, marks the first major indication of how COVID will affect Black Friday store shopping, which for almost a decade kicked off with big crowds on the turkey feast and expanded into Friday. However, given safety concerns, stores are rethinking their plans for the kickoff.

Given Walmart’s clout as the nation’s largest retailer, other major retailers could follow its lead. Macy’s CEO Jeff Gennette said earlier this month that the department store will be pivoting its Black Friday business more toward online and will likely be going “full force” with holiday marketing right after Halloween. It also will be staggering events to reduce customer traffic in the stores.

Walmart also said Tuesday that it will be giving out another round of bonuses for workers on the front lines of the coronavirus. The company said that it will be doling out $300 for full-time hourly workers and $150 for part-time hourly and temporary workers. Drivers, managers and assistant managers in stores, clubs, distribution centers and fulfillment centers and health and wellness will also receive a bonus. It will add up to approximately $428 million, Walmart said.

The bonuses will be included in Aug. 20 paychecks for eligible workers employed as of July 31.

“Our associates have been working at an incredible pace, they’ve solved problems, and they’ve set an amazing example for others,” said John Furner, president and CEO of Walmart U.S., in a corporate blog post. “To further appreciate their incredible work, we are pleased to share another special cash bonus this summer.”

“Nebraskans whose income has been affected by the pandemic can apply for a scholarship to gain new skills to grow their earnings,” said Gov. The purpose of the WRI program is to help Nebraskans whose livelihoods were impacted by the pandemic obtain skills to quickly find new opportunities in high-demand jobs and career pathways. &nbsp;WRI is administered by the Nebraska Department of Economic Development (DED) in partnership with the Nebraska Department of Labor (NDOL).&nbsp; The initiative is funded by $16 million from the State’s $1.08 billion federal Coronavirus Relief Fund allocation.

Under the program, each community college has designed short-term credit and non-credit training courses that will help scholarship recipients achieve industry-recognized certifications in a variety of high-demand occupations. &nbsp;The colleges will also provide career coaching to help students match their skills and interests to employment opportunities.&nbsp;&nbsp;Every participant will engage with one or more employers during the training process.

“WRI will not only help unemployed or underemployed Nebraskans rapidly recover from economic setbacks to themselves or their families, it will provide a unique opportunity for individuals to hone their skillsets and advance further up the vocational ladder in a high-demand field,” said DED Director Anthony L. Goins. &nbsp;“We anticipate providing over 12,300 scholarships to individuals across the state, and are targeting a 90% job placement rate within three months for those individuals who complete the training.”

“Nebraska’s outstanding community college system is ready to provide top-notch, industry-recognized training to help thousands of our residents launch into a rewarding new job or career path,” said Labor Commissioner John Albin.&nbsp;&nbsp;“We encourage any Nebraskan who is interested not to miss out on this one-of-a-kind opportunity, which could provide lifelong benefits far beyond today’s period of turbulence.”

Most scholarships will cover the full cost of the training program, with gap financing available to qualifying students to pay for most non-covered costs. &nbsp;Scholarship amounts will be determined by the colleges, with the average of all scholarships not to exceed $1,100.

Participants who were receiving unemployment benefits before being awarded a scholarship may continue to access the benefits, provided they are receiving training in an NDOL-approved program. &nbsp;While a claimant is in approved training, they are excused from the work search requirement. &nbsp;Applicants can apply for this waiver through NDOL.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - A former finance chief for the Nebraska State Fair collected nearly $150,000 in undocumented payments through a company he created last year, state auditors said Tuesday.

The review found two checks totaling $149,415.60 that were made out to RKBB Enterprises Inc., state auditors said in a letter to the fair's governing board.

RKBB Enterprises was created in May 2019 by Brandon Kopke, the fair's former chief of finance and administration. Kopke resigned in November after telling board members that the fair was headed for bankruptcy.

State auditors said they identified the questionable payments during a review of the fair's spending. According to the letter, auditors couldn't find any invoices for the payments or connect them to any services provided for the fair.

Mary Avery, the state's special audits and finance manager, said the account where the checks were deposited appears to have been used for personal expenses.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-The West Central District Health Department said on Tuesday that five new cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in their jurisdiction, which includes Lincoln, Logan, McPherson, Thomas, Hooker and Arthur Counties.

Five new cases of COVID-19 reported in WCDHD jurisdiction 

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - The University of Nebraska's new president expressed confidence Tuesday that all four university campuses will be ready for in-person classes this fall despite the threat of the coronavirus.

Ted Carter said the campuses in Lincoln, Omaha and Kearney have already taken steps to welcome back students while minimizing the risk that the virus will spread.

Carter said students who arrive on campus for the fall semester will see smaller, spread-out classes, less crowded dorms, mandatory masks and buildings that are cleaned more frequently.

"We're not going into this with hope and a prayer," Carter said at a news conference with Gov. Pete Ricketts. "We're going into this with a bias for action."

University officials have left open the possibility that they will return to online learning if the pandemic worsens. But Carter said it's important for the university to offer in-person instruction. He said university surveys have shown that the vast majority of students and faculty members want to return for in-person classes, and extra precautions will taken for those who are at greater risk.

"You cannot get the same level of education through a Zoom call," Carter said.

Carter said the university is better-positioned than many other schools because each of its campuses is spread out over large areas, making it easier to keep people at a safe distance. The university has roughly 51,000 students and 16,000 faculty and staff members at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, University of Nebraska at Omaha, University of Nebraska at Kearney and the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

In May, the university's flagship campus in Lincoln announced that it would&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/b2f2b4f84ce69bc070d8fd0860eae147" target="_blank">start classes online</a>&nbsp;for one week on Aug. 17 and then transition to in-person learning for the rest of the fall semester, starting Aug. 24. The semester will be shortened, and scheduled to end before Thanksgiving.

Carter was sworn in as the university's new president in January, just a few months before the pandemic forced widespread closures in Nebraska and the rest of the country. The university&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/ee78cc53e7840129c7815526dd424167" target="_blank">closed its campuses</a>&nbsp;in April as the pandemic worsened.

The campuses also shifted to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/e8967d9860d335e09c5f7f4ddf8fe8f3" target="_blank">online classes</a>&nbsp;during the spring semester to try to keep the virus from spreading.

Nebraska's community colleges are taking similar steps. For instance, Northeast Community College in Norfolk announced in June that it will offer a combination of small, socially distanced on-campus classes and online instruction.

They also expect to take a leading role in training people who lost their jobs because of the pandemic, said Greg Adams, executive director of the Nebraska Community College Association.

The state has set aside $16 million in federal coronavirus aid to help pay those educational costs. Ricketts said community colleges will administer the program and distribute the money in the form of scholarships for people going into high-demand jobs.

"We need to get (people who lost their jobs) back in the workforce as quickly as we can," Adams said.

(AP) - The University of Nebraska's new president expressed confidence Tuesday that all four university campuses will be ready for in-person classes this fall despite the threat of the coronavirus.Ted Carter said the campuses in Lincoln, Omaha and Kearney have already taken steps to welcome back students while minimizing the risk that the virus will spread.Carter said students who arrive on campus for the fall semester will see smaller, spread-out classes, less crowded dorms, mandatory masks and buildings that are cleaned more frequently."We're not going into this with hope and a prayer," Carter said at a news conference with Gov. Pete Ricketts. "We're going into this with a bias for action."University officials have left open the possibility that they will return to online learning if the pandemic worsens. But Carter said it's important for the university to offer in-person instruction. He said university surveys have shown that the vast majority of students and faculty members want to return for in-person classes, and extra precautions will taken for those who are at greater risk."You cannot get the same level of education through a Zoom call," Carter said.Carter said the university is better-positioned than many other schools because each of its campuses is spread out over large areas, making it easier to keep people at a safe distance. The university has roughly 51,000 students and 16,000 faculty and staff members at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, University of Nebraska at Omaha, University of Nebraska at Kearney and the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.In May, the university's flagship campus in Lincoln announced that it would&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/b2f2b4f84ce69bc070d8fd0860eae147" target="_blank">start classes online</a>&nbsp;for one week on Aug. 17 and then transition to in-person learning for the rest of the fall semester, starting Aug. 24. The semester will be shortened, and scheduled to end before Thanksgiving.Carter was sworn in as the university's new president in January, just a few months before the pandemic forced widespread closures in Nebraska and the rest of the country. MPCC announces July and August Registration Day schedule

Visit any fishing tackle store and you might be overwhelmed with the selection of what is “required” to go fishing. There are lures, jigs, plugs and poppers of every color and shape and rod and reels of every price range. The truth is that a stick, string, hook, weight and optional bobber is all it takes to have a fun evening of fishing at the lake.

For your stick and string, an inexpensive push-button reel with 6- to 10-pound monofilament string will catch most fish. This type of spincast fishing outfit is widely available for a range of prices. Fishing rod and reel sets for about $30 will last a lifetime. Better yet, most of us know a grandpa, uncle or neighbor who will have one of these sitting in the shop that will be free for the asking. This style of fishing rod seldom wears out and may just need new string and grease. Don’t be shy: That grandpa or neighbor also probably will help and go fishing with you if you ask.

For a relaxing fishing trip, leave the lures at home or at the store for now. Using a simple and versatile hook-and-weight fishing rig will catch trout, catfish, bullheads and panfish, such as bluegill, bass and crappie.

For the hook, smaller is more effective than too big. A bait-holder hook, which has barbs along the shank in addition to the point, in sizes 6 to 10 will cover small bluegill up to 10-pound catfish. Add a few 1- to 2-inch bobbers, small split-shot weights and quarter-once sliding egg sinkers and you have all the tackle you need. Total tackle cost should be less than $15.

To catch a catfish or bullhead, place the egg sinker on the line, then a split shot with about 18 inches from the end, and tie a size 6 hook on the end of the line. Bait with worms, uncooked hot dog chunks or lunch meat. Cast this rig out and let it settle to the bottom. To snag your fish, let it pull the string freely away and set the hook with a gentle yank on the pole when you are confident they committed to eating the bait.

For panfish and trout, skip the egg sinker and just place the split shot about 18 inches from the end with a No. 8 or 10 hook tied to the end of the string. This is a simple rig that can be fished on the bottom or floated by adding a bobber above the split shot. Bait can be worms, crickets or just about anything you find in your pantry, including corn, scraps of meat and balled up bread.

Simple setup all that’s needed to get started fishing

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - A former Nebraska volleyball player and eight other women have sued the university, alleging it did not properly investigate complaints of sexual assault and harassment.

The complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Nebraska outlines an alleged pattern of unresponsiveness, sloppiness and indifference by university employees in charge of investigating allegations of sexual misconduct.

Seven of the women say they were victims of rape or sexual assault and two others say they were victims of sexual harassment and stalking, all between 2015-18. One woman also alleged racial discrimination.

The volleyball player said she had been groped at a party in 2018 and later transferred to another school because of emotional distress. Two other women also left Nebraska.

"UNL's investigation and response to each of the Plaintiffs' sex discrimination complaints was insufficient and did not comply with basic due process requirements," the complaint said. "UNL's response to each of the Plaintiffs constituted sex discrimination in a variety of ways."

The complaint alleged violations of Title IX, the federal civil rights law ensuring equal opportunities for women in education, and that university training for students on sexual misconduct policies and investigation and reporting procedures are inadequate.

The women are seeking punitive damages to be determined at trial.

"The health and safety of all of our students, is of the upmost importance to us," the university said in a statement. "We have a strong Title IX process and are confident in it. Every case is difficult and investigated based on the information made available. We cannot comment on the specifics of any Title IX investigation or on pending litigation."

Nebraska emergency medical services bill wins final approval

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - College athletes in Nebraska may soon be able to sign endorsement deals with sneaker companies, car dealerships and other sponsors under a bill approved by lawmakers on Tuesday.

Lawmakers gave the measure final approval with a 37-6 vote. It now heads to Gov. Pete Ricketts.

The measure would apply to student-athletes at the University of Nebraska and its smaller state colleges.

It would cover athletes in all sports, although Nebraska's football, basketball and volleyball players are likely to have the most money-making opportunities. Student athletes wouldn't get salaries but couldn't be punished for signing with an outside sponsor.

Sen. Megan Hunt, of Omaha, has said she introduced the bill to give student athletes a way to support themselves. She has argued that the athletes are essentially giving free labor to NCAA programs that generate millions of dollars a year, potentially at risk to their own health.

California last year became the first state to let college athletes use their status to make money, following criticism that universities and athletic sponsors are getting rich off the backs of athletes and not sharing the wealth. Other states are considering similar measures, even though the NCAA has taken steps to address it on a national level.

Nebraska lawmakers OK endorsement deals for college athletes

The party’s state central committee voted Sunday to back Alisha Shelton, an Omaha mental health therapist, if nominee Chris Janicek withdraws his name from consideration.

Janicek has refused to resign from the race, and state law bars the party from removing him as their nominee without his consent. If Janicek doesn’t withdraw by Sept. 1, his name will remain on the ballot as the party’s nominee in November.

“Voters deserve a candidate we can be proud of and Alisha Shelton is a leader who will fight for those who need health care and good-paying jobs,” said Jane Kleeb, the party’s chairwoman.

Party leaders condemned Janicek, an Omaha cupcake bakery owner, after he made offensive comments in a group text with campaign staffers.

At one point after winning the nomination, Janicek wrote that he had gotten into an argument with a female staffer and asked whether the campaign should spend money on “getting her laid.” He also made crude references to group sex. The woman who was the target of his remarks was accidentally included on the group text and filed a complaint with the party.

Kleeb said Janicek has “no shot” at beating incumbent Republican U.S. Sen. Ben Sasse, who is seeking a second term, and she argued that Shelton would do a better job of uniting voters. Even before the scandal, Janicek wasn’t likely to win in Republican-dominated Nebraska.

Shelton was the third-place finisher in the May 12 Democratic primary. After news broke about Janicek’s text messages, many Democrats coalesced around Shelton, including Angie Philips, who finished second in the primary.

However, her loss in the primary prevents her from even running as a write-in candidate unless Janicek withdraws.

“I am ready to fight for all Nebraskans and take on Sen. Sasse this November,” Shelton said.

Nebraska Democrats endorse replacement for Senate nominee

This week, State Senators return to Lincoln to finish the remaining days of the 2020 legislative session.&nbsp; As they get back to business, there are a handful of key issues that will command much of the Legislature’s attention in the limited time remaining.&nbsp; As I wrote about last week, Nebraska’s top priority for this session is property tax relief.&nbsp; The property tax issue along with a few others will dominate the waning days of the session, which are sure to move at a fast pace. &nbsp;Here’s a short overview of what’s to come.

Financial Picture: &nbsp;The Legislature’s return comes as Nebraska remains in a relatively strong financial position, setting up the opportunity to deliver property tax relief.&nbsp; For the fiscal year that just ended on June 30th, the State of Nebraska exceeded its certified revenue forecast by over $10 million despite the impact of coronavirus.&nbsp; This is especially impressive since a significant portion of state income tax dollars originally forecasted for April 2020 will now be reported in July 2020.&nbsp; That shift is due to the change in the state’s income tax filing deadline from April 15th&nbsp;to July 15th.&nbsp; Additionally, the Nebraska Forecasting Advisory Board will meet this week to set a new forecast, which will help inform the Legislature’s work in the remaining days of session.

Property Tax Relief:&nbsp;&nbsp;Property tax relief is the top priority for Nebraskans as the Legislature returns to work.&nbsp; Over the last five years, the State has made progress in delivering relief from high local property taxes for hardworking Nebraskans.&nbsp; In 2019, Senators and I delivered significant tax relief by increasing the property tax credit relief fund by over 20 percent.&nbsp; That fund has nearly doubled during my time as Governor, from $140 million to $275 million per year.&nbsp;&nbsp;This year, Senator Linehan’s LB 1106 would provide millions of dollars in new support for K-12 schools in an effort to control local property tax growth.&nbsp; This bill is the vehicle for property tax relief this session.&nbsp; I will be working closely with Senators in the coming weeks to deliver this important relief for hardworking Nebraska families.

Business Tax Incentives:&nbsp;&nbsp;Passing a property tax bill is critical to the hopes of continuing Nebraska’s business tax incentives.&nbsp; Currently, Nebraska’s tax incentives are scheduled to expire at the end of 2020.&nbsp; Many Senators and I agree that we must deliver property tax relief before corporate tax incentives.&nbsp; Senator Mark Kolterman has introduced a bill (LB 720) to refine and extend the state’s tax incentive program.&nbsp; Unlike other state incentive programs, Nebraska’s tax incentives are performance-based.&nbsp; Tax benefits aren’t given in the hopes of future investment.&nbsp; They’re only earned by businesses that have already created verifiable jobs in our state.&nbsp; This feature ensures that incentives reward actual job creation in Nebraska.&nbsp; The incentives have helped attract major investments in the Cornhusker State.&nbsp; The incentives are part of the reason why Nebraska has ranked among the top three states in the nation for most new economic development projects per capita for five consecutive years.&nbsp;

UNMC NExT Project: &nbsp;The success of another major proposal is awaiting progress on property tax relief.&nbsp; Senator Kolterman also introduced LB 1084, which would support Nebraska’s bid for a major investment at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC).&nbsp; The proposed investment at UNMC would support an academic medical facility to help the United States address future pandemics and other public health events.&nbsp; Additionally, the project has the potential to create 8,700 great-paying jobs. &nbsp;

Veterans Tax Relief:&nbsp;&nbsp;Tax relief for veterans is a key part of our plan to make Nebraska the most veteran-friendly state in the nation.&nbsp; At my request, Senator John Lowe prioritized LB 153 earlier this year to provide tax relief for veterans.&nbsp; The bill would exempt 50 percent of military retirement benefit income from state income taxation. &nbsp; LB 153 keeps us competitive with other Midwestern states, most of which do not tax military retirement benefits at all. &nbsp;

Ban Dismemberment Abortions:&nbsp;&nbsp;Nebraska is a pro-life state, and it’s important that our laws reflect our values.&nbsp; Senator Suzanne Geist has introduced LB 814, a bill that further strengthens Nebraska’s pro-life policies.&nbsp; LB 814 would put an end to the brutal practice of dismemberment abortion in Nebraska.&nbsp; This type of abortion usually takes place between 13 and 24 weeks of pregnancy.&nbsp; The barbaric procedure literally rips apart a preborn child, piece-by-piece, to destroy the life of the baby.&nbsp; This summer, Senators can put a stop to this ruthless way of performing an abortion by passing this important bill.

Gov. Ricketts: Back to Business

It’s ok to be influenced by past experiences as long as you don’t let them define who you are.

The Sutherland woman has been selected as this year’s student commencement speaker at North Platte Community College. When she walks across the stage to accept her degrees – one an Associate of Arts, the other an Associate of Science – she will be accomplishing something huge.

“Not only will I be receiving two degrees, but I will be doing so as the first person in my immediate family to go to college,” Kreber said. “It’s super exciting.”

When she walks across the stage to accept her degrees – one an Associate of Arts, the other an Associate of Science – she will be accomplishing something huge.“Not only will I be receiving two degrees, but I will be doing so as the first person in my immediate family to go to college,” Kreber said. “It’s super exciting.”It’s also the first step on the path to a bright future - one she wasn’t always so optimistic about.“My mom passed away when I was really young, and my dad remarried,” Kreber said. “I grew up with a tough home life - domestic abuse, drugs, alcohol, you name it. It’s part of who I am, and I’m not ashamed of that.”The circumstances, along with her Christian faith, did play a part in who she wants to become.“I have really big goals,” Kreber said. “Growing up, I had to choose between two different paths - the one my family members were on, or the high road. I chose the high road, because I don’t want to live the other lifestyle. At times, that was a very challenging decision to make. It has also been empowering to finally reach the point that I’m at now.”Kreber graduated from Sutherland High School in 2018 then enrolled at NPCC – about 20 miles down the road.“I decided I couldn’t go very far away because I still had two younger siblings at home, and I wanted to be close to them,” Kreber said. “The biggest reason I chose NPCC, was because I wasn’t entirely sure what I wanted to do after I graduated, and I thought going to a community college would be a less expensive option for getting my generals out of the way. After I got offered a scholarship to play volleyball at NPCC, it was a no-brainer.”Volleyball had been a tremendous outlet for Kreber while she was in high school, so she was thrilled to be able to continue playing at the college level.She soon found herself falling in love with everything about NPCC – from its small class sizes to its family-like atmosphere.“Everything happens for a reason,” Kreber said. “NPCC was just what I needed, when I needed it. Coming from a small school, I think I would have struggled my first two years if I would have gone to a larger four-year college or university. NPCC prepared me for that transition.”Not only did Kreber find a strong support system in her volleyball teammates and coaches, but the instructors were consistently there for her as well.“The instructors have been a big part of why my experience was so great at NPCC,” Kreber said. “I’ve become close with so many of them that it’s going to be hard to say goodbye. The instructors really are what makes the college so unique and a first-choice school.”Kreber will transfer to the University of Nebraska–Lincoln in the fall. The next time she starts classes, it will be with a clear direction.“I kind of found myself at NPCC,” Kreber said. “I tell everyone that I want to be Dr. Phil.”She plans to earn a bachelor’s degree in child and family studies with a minor in psychology at UNL. After that, her goal is to immediately enter grad school to pursue a master’s degree in community counseling.“I would love to eventually open up my own clinic and do some family and marriage counseling,” Kreber said. “I’ve decided that my passion is helping people. I had a great support network in the Sutherland community members. They are the ones who raised me and made me who I am. I want to be that for somebody someday.”Kreber will share more of her story during NPCC’s commencement program July 31. The ceremony will begin at 3 p.m. in the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium on NPCC’s South Campus, 601 W. State Farm Rd.
