that represents the interests of more than 13,000 Nebraska
nonprofits, has asked Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts to declare
additional funding for nonprofits as part of the Coronavirus Relief
Fund (CRF, created under the federal CARES Act passed by Congress.
Nonprofit organizations work directly with people of varying needs
and see firsthand the impacts the pandemic has on people’s lives. 


NAM
distributed a letter to Ricketts June 15 to call for transparency and
accountability in how the state distributes the federal money to help
identify the greatest areas of need and ensure the public has
confidence in how it is distributed.

and businesses impacted by the pandemic.&nbsp;Nebraska nonprofits
employ 1 of every 11 working Nebraskans. Like other businesses, many
nonprofits are struggling financially due to COVID. Like the Paycheck
Protection Program, struggling nonprofits should be eligible for the
$392 million in grants that have been provided to businesses,” said

Hindery

housing. In addition, no money is included for direct assistance to
individuals and families, likely creating unnecessary barriers and
delays when people need relief now.”

Ricketts
recently outlined how Nebraska will spend $7.7 billion in COVID-19
funding, which includes more than $1 billion in the CRF, which the
state can distribute for purposes related to COVID-19. Ricketts’
plan for the CRF includes $392 million for business grants to help
pay for operating expenses and $85 million for the Community CARES
program to help support nonprofits. Under the plan, businesses will
receive 460% more funding compared to organizations offering direct
relief. 


“Nonprofits
can do their part by creating and sending action alerts to their
constituents and calling on government leaders to allow nonprofits to
be eligible for business grants, provide additional funding for
services to individuals, prioritize funding for communities of color
and make the CRF process open and transparent,” Hindery said.

Nonprofit group urges Gov. Ricketts to provide additional funding for nonprofits

LINCOLN, Neb.-Governor Pete Ricketts announced the next steps in the State’s phased plan to loosen restrictions that have been in place during the coronavirus pandemic.&nbsp; The new directed health measures (DHMs, easing restrictions on businesses and activities, will take effect June 22, 2020. &nbsp;&nbsp;Most counties in Nebraska (89 out of 93) will move to “Phase 3” of the reopening on June 22nd.&nbsp; Dakota, Hall, Hamilton, and Merrick counties will move to “Phase 2.”

Felicia Quintana-Zinn, Deputy Director for the Division of Public Health of the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS, also participated in today’s press conference.&nbsp; She overviewed the State’s plan, developed in conjunction with partner associations and local health departments, to help long-term care (LTC) facilities safely move toward more normal operations.

Nebraska Department of Education (NDE) Commissioner Matthew Blomstedt also joined the Governor at this afternoon’s briefing.&nbsp; He stated that NDE expects schools to resume instruction this fall with students in the classroom.&nbsp;

The Governor also proclaimed June as “Dairy Month” in Nebraska at today’s press conference.&nbsp; Nebraska State Dairy Association President Mike Guenther accepted the official proclamation on behalf of the state’s dairy farmers.

Gov. Ricketts: Directed Health Measures

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;We first implemented Directed Health Measures back in March to help slow the spread of the virus.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;We’ve successfully slowed the spread. &nbsp;Now, we’re taking a step-by-step approach to loosen restrictions, while still making sure our healthcare system is stable.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;On May 4th, we began Phase 1 of our reopening plan in some counties.&nbsp; On June 1st, most counties entered Phase 2.&nbsp; Today, we’re announcing that 89 of the state’s 93 counties will proceed to Phase 3 on June 22nd.&nbsp; The remaining counties—Dakota, Hall, Hamilton, and Merrick—will move from Phase 1 to Phase 2 on June 22nd.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;As part of our reopening plans, we are announcing a phased approach to reopen long-term care facilities.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;DHHS&nbsp;is working closely with long-term care (LTC) facilities, local health departments, and their partners to provide safe and appropriate care for residents of long-term care facilities during the pandemic.&nbsp;

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;DHHS has developed a Long-Term Care Coronavirus Phasing Guidance (LTC Phasing Guidance) for responsibly easing restrictions in LTC facilities while coronavirus remains in communities across Nebraska.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The LTC Phasing Guidance mirrors the Directed Health Measure phases to allow facilities a standardized tool to determine when they should ease restrictions based off of their community data.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The LTC Phasing Guidance has three phases that include considerations such as visitation, communal dining, and group activities.&nbsp;

o&nbsp;&nbsp;All LTC facilities are currently considered to be in LTC Phase 1.

o&nbsp;&nbsp;If their local health district is currently under DHM Phase 2, LTC facilities can move to LTC Phase 2 now if they meet the criteria under the LTC Phasing Guidance.&nbsp;

o&nbsp;&nbsp;In order to move to LTC Phase 3, an LTC facility must be located in a local health district under DHM Phase 3, complete baseline testing of their staff, and meet other criteria under the LTC Phasing Guidance.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;If a positive case of coronavirus is identified at a facility after progressing to another phase, the facility must work with the local health department to determine whether circumstances require the facility to return to Phase 1.&nbsp;

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Test Nebraska resources are being offered by the State to help facilitate baseline testing of staff and residents at no charge to facilities for specimen collection materials, laboratory testing, and PPE.&nbsp;

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;LTC facilities must register for testing online.&nbsp; The State will schedule facilities for testing and will distribute test kits and PPE to facilities through the local health departments.&nbsp;

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;All test specimens will be processed by the CHI St. Elizabeth lab in Lincoln.&nbsp;

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Facilities and the local health departments will receive reports of test results.&nbsp;

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The LTC Phasing Guidance is being e-mailed to all long-term care facilities in Nebraska today and will be available on the DHHS coronavirus website&nbsp;(<a href="http://dhhs.ne.gov/coronavirus" target="_blank">dhhs.ne.gov/coronavirus</a>) soon.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Dairy Month started out as a way to distribute extra milk during the warm months of summer.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Nebraska’s dairy farm families pride themselves on producing wholesome dairy foods that provide great-tasting nourishment.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Nebraska has a strong dairy farming heritage, which is evident in the 127 dairies across the state. &nbsp;100% of these dairies are family owned.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Thank you to the dairy farmers who work hard to help us keep our refrigerators stocked with fresh milk and other dairy foods.

Gov. Ricketts announces new directed health measures effective June 22

Platte River Cruise Night crew is excited to partner with North
Platte Native, Mat Fhuere, to welcome one of the original California
Customizers and the King of Kustoms, Mr Gene Winfield to North
Platte, Nebraska to attend the 2-day Platte River Cruise Night Car
Show on July 11th,
2020.

Gene
built his first roadster while in high school during World War II and
hasn’t stopped since.&nbsp;After Gene’s return from the service
in 1951, he opened Winfield’s
custom shop
in California. Over the years he has also contributed to articles in
many rodding publications and an article for Car
Kulture Deluxe.
By 1960, Gene’s work was getting national recognition, most notably
for his custom paint jobs. His eye for shades and hues led to the
development of the first fully blended paint job. His canvas was the
radically customized 57 Mercury dubbed the Jade Idol. It was quickly
followed by another custom Mercury called the Solar Scene, a 1950
with electrically operated seats that swiveled out to greet the
occupants. A couple of other famous Winfield cars are the Strip Star
and the Reactor, both of these cars are animated with remote control
devices and gadgets. These cars have won many prestigious awards at
national car shows, including the “America’s most beautiful
roadster” award in 1955, 63, and again in 64.

Later,
Gene was asked to run AMT’s
(a model car company) speed and custom division. AMT
built specialty vehicles for TV shows, feature films and movies. One
such creation was a plastic bodied car called the Piranha.&nbsp;Some
of Gene’s creations were the Man
from U.N.C.L.E.
and Get
Smart gadget
cars, the Galileo
shuttlecraft
from the original Star
Trek
series, a 31 Chevy that converted to the NEW 1967 Camaro in under a
minute for the Dean
Martin show,
a new Impala split front to rear for a Chevrolet commercial and he
has also frozen a car in a block of ice for an oil company. Some of
the movies and TV shows that feature his work are Ironside,
&nbsp;

Officials report 17 deaths on Nebraska roadways in May

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska bars, restaurants and other venues will soon be able to allow more people inside under relaxed rules Gov. Pete Ricketts outlined.

The new rules take effect next Monday across 89 of the state's 93 counties. Restaurants and bars will be allowed to use their full capacity as long as establishments practice social distancing and ensure additional hygiene practices. And gatherings of up to 10,000 people will be allowed as long as indoor venues remain at 50% of their capacity and outdoor venues limit attendance to 75% of their capacity.

Ricketts said Monday that the data on hospital capacity and illnesses across the state supports further easing the restrictions. Hospital capacity remained steady Monday, with 43% of the state's hospital beds, 53% of its intensive care unit beds and 76% of its respirators available for use.

"We've got robust hospital capacity in the state today to be able to take care of people. And that's what we're focused on," Ricketts said.

Currently, restaurants and bars are limited to half their capacity. The new rules will also allow groups of eight people to be seated together, up from the current limit of six people.

Starting next week, gyms, salons, massage parlors and tattoo businesses will be allowed to operate at 75% capacity although masks will be required at most of those businesses.

Child care facilities will also be allowed to increase the number of kids per room starting next week. And the remaining restrictions on elective surgeries will be lifted.

But the relaxed state rules will continue to prohibit most parades, carnivals, street dances and beer gardens.

In four counties that have been hit hard by the virus - Hall, Merrick, Hamilton and Dakota counties - the restrictions will also be relaxed Monday but not as much as in the rest of the state.

State officials also announced that schools are expected to reopen in the fall with students back in classrooms although many details of those plans are still being worked out.

"Our expectation is that they will have in-person learning this fall," Nebraska Education Commissioner Matt Blomstedt said.

State health officials said Monday that four more COVID-19 deaths were reported over the weekend, bringing the state's total to 216. The state's&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraska.maps.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/4213f719a45647bc873ffb58783ffef3" target="_blank">online coronavirus tracke</a>&nbsp;r also showed a jump in cases confirmed over the weekend, including 120 new cases on Saturday and 92 new cases on Sunday, to take the state's total to 16,725.

For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms that clear up within weeks. But for others, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, the highly contagious virus can cause severe symptoms and be fatal.

4 more COVID-19 deaths reported over weekend in Nebraska

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. (AP) - A motorcyclist died in a weekend collision with a car near Scottsbluff, authorities in western Nebraska said.

The crash happened Sunday morning on Highway 26, the Scottsbluff Star-Herald&nbsp;<a href="https://www.starherald.com/news/local_news/motorcyclist-killed-in-crash/article_eef7ccc8-aea2-11ea-b6a8-df36ff9c1092.html" target="_blank">reported</a>. The motorcyclist, whose name has not yet been released, was found unresponsive at the scene. He was taken to a Scottsbluff hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Another motorcyclist who had been riding alongside the victim told investigators he had been riding behind his friend on the highway and saw an oncoming car fail to negotiate a curve in the road, hitting the motorcyclist.

OMAHA, Neb.– After three months of staying at home because of COVID-19, drivers are beginning to get back on the road.  AAA urges motorists to avoid falling back into the dangerous driving habits revealed by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety’s annual Traffic Safety Culture Index (TSCI).

“The pandemic has highlighted the extent to which individual decisions and behaviors can impact the health and safety of others,” said Rose White, Heartland Region public affairs director for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “We need to remember that we are all ‘in this together’ when it comes to safety on the road as well.”

The TSCI, which was conducted before the pandemic hit, shows a significant gap between what drivers consider dangerous and what they report doing themselves.  It found that drivers perceive distracted, aggressive, drowsy and impaired driving as dangerous, yet many admit to engaging in at least one of these exact behaviors in the 30 days before the survey.

Behavior	Perceived as Dangerous/Have done in the last 30 days:

Talking on a handheld cell phone	79.7%/43.2%

Driving 15 mph over the speed limit on a freeway	55.1%/42.8%

Driving 10 mph over the speed limit on a residential street	64%/41.5%

Driving while being so tired that they had a hard time keeping their eyes open	96.1%	23.6%

Driving after drinking enough alcohol to be over the legal limit	94%/9.8%

Driving within an hour after using marijuana	68.7%	6.3%

Driving while using potentially impairing prescription drugs	88.4%/5.8%

AAA recommends these safety tips to keep everyone safe on the road:

Out of sight, out of mind. Stow your smartphone away, turn it to airplane mode, or activate call/text blocking features like Apple’s Do Not Disturb.

Slow down. Drivers tend to overestimate time saved by speeding. You’d have to travel 100 miles to save roughly 5 minutes, moving at 75 mph instead of 70 mph. Speed kills and isn’t worth the cost.

Stay alert. Get adequate rest and stop driving if you become sleepy. Fatigue impacts reaction time, judgment, and vision, causing people who are very tired to behave in similar ways to those who are drunk.

Drive sober.  If you consume marijuana, alcohol, or use potentially impairing prescription medications, then don’t drive.  And if you’re going to drive, then don’t consume these substances. If you are taking prescription medications, visit Roadwise Rx to learn if they can impair driving.

Here in Nebraska, June is both Renewable Fuels Month and Dairy Month, so it’s a fitting time to talk about how we’re working to get Nebraska agriculture growing.&nbsp; 2020 has been another challenging year for our state’s largest industry. &nbsp;The coronavirus pandemic has impacted commodity prices and caused significant changes to the nation’s food supply chain.&nbsp; Through it all, our farmers, ranchers, and food processor workers have delivered the food our nation and the world need.

Over the years, Nebraska’s ag producers have defined Nebraska grit and determination, and they have once again responded well to adversity.&nbsp; As they navigate difficult circumstances, we’re dedicating federal and state assistance to keep our farms and ranches growing. &nbsp;

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has rolled out the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program (CFAP) to aid the nation’s agricultural community.&nbsp; CFAP is making $16 billion in direct payments to farmers and ranchers to compensate them for coronavirus-related price drops and market disruptions. &nbsp;USDA has just begun to issue the first CFAP payments.&nbsp; As of June 8th, the program has already disbursed about $100 million to ag producers in our state.&nbsp; Nebraskans interested in CFAP should contact their local Farm Service Agency to inquire about submitting an application.&nbsp; Details of the program are available online at&nbsp;<a href="https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Ffarmers.gov%2Fcfap&amp;data=02%7C01%7Ccio.webmstr%40nebraska.gov%7C08b6e928ee0a4c85b9f808d80f1678ad%7C043207dfe6894bf6902001038f11f0b1%7C0%7C0%7C637275936481833936&amp;sdata=fgEw%2Fs%2Bk9TCL1C2JmbQUyfz1uyjgRCGUgEiUdR%2FM%2FuA%3D&amp;reserved=0" target="_blank">farmers.gov/cfap</a>. &nbsp;The USDA is accepting applications through August 28, 2020.

The coronavirus has been especially challenging for the ethanol industry.&nbsp; People have been driving significantly less over the last few months, which has reduced the demand for ethanol and other fuels locally and worldwide.&nbsp; At one point, 42% of ethanol production in Nebraska was offline.&nbsp; The good news is that as drivers return to the road, demand is coming back.&nbsp;

To support the farmers, ranchers, and production facilities in the ethanol industry, we’re successfully advocating for higher ethanol blends—E15, E30, and E85.&nbsp; Ethanol fuels save consumers money, benefit the environment, and create more opportunity for Nebraska’s farmers and ranchers.&nbsp; A year ago, the ethanol industry celebrated news that E15 had been approved for sale all year long. &nbsp;This February, the USDA announced a new initiative—the Higher Blends Infrastructure Incentive Program. &nbsp;It represents a real commitment to expand access to higher blends of ethanol fuel throughout the United States.&nbsp; The USDA will award $100 million in grants this year as part of the program. &nbsp;Through August 13th, gas stations and other fueling facilities can apply for funds to install or upgrade fuel pumps, storage tanks, and other infrastructure. &nbsp;

International trade continues to be a key to growing agriculture.&nbsp; The new USMCA trade deal officially takes effect on July 1, 2020, which is great news for our ag community. &nbsp;Mexico already ranks as Nebraska’s top export destination for corn and dairy, while Canada is our second largest market for ethanol and dairy.&nbsp; The more advantageous trade terms of USMCA will give Nebraska’s ag producers even better access to these North American markets.&nbsp; This is especially true for our dairy farmers, who will face fewer restrictive trade barriers when selling to Canada.

While travel restrictions have put a temporary pause on trade missions, our economic development team continues to be in contact with international partners.&nbsp; As travel opens up, I’ll lead additional trade missions to promote Nebraska’s high-quality crops and livestock.&nbsp; We’ve seen great results from these missions.&nbsp; For example, in September I met with top trade leaders in Japan and Vietnam to talk about the premium ag products grown in Nebraska. &nbsp;From January to April of 2020, Nebraska’s combined beef and pork exports to Japan have been over $50 million higher than they were during the same period last year.&nbsp;

In early March, Vietnamese trade officials visited Lincoln as a follow up from our 2019 trade mission to Hanoi.&nbsp; They committed to buy $3 billion of cattle, corn, distiller’s grains, soybeans, and wheat from Nebraska in the next two to three years.&nbsp; We’re already seeing exponential growth in the Vietnamese market.&nbsp; Beef exports to Vietnam have risen 119% and pork exports are up 136% in the first four months of 2020 compared to the same period in 2019.&nbsp;

True to character, Nebraska’s ag community has found ways to help their neighbors in their hour of need even while facing difficulty themselves.&nbsp; After the coronavirus outbreak, the Green Plains plant in York quickly found new uses for the industrial ethanol it manufactures. &nbsp;The company has donated the ethanol for use in the production of hand sanitizers to aid communities in Nebraska.&nbsp; The Alliance for the Future of Agriculture in Nebraska (AFAN) also stepped up to launch a grant program to supply food pantries around the state with cold storage.&nbsp; Milk is typically the most requested item from food pantries, but many of them do not have the ability to store non-perishables. &nbsp;Nebraska’s ag community is donating milk as well as contributing funds so that food banks can purchase refrigerators.

Ricketts: Let's get Nebraska agriculture growing again

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska small businesses and livestock producers that took a hit from the coronavirus pandemic will get the chance to apply for financial assistance starting Monday, state officials announced.

The state will award grants of at least $12,000 to eligible businesses with five to 49 employees and livestock producers with one to 10 employees. The programs are a part of the $1.1 billion the state received from the federal government's coronavirus relief package.

Gov. Pete Ricketts said state officials will distribute the money on a first-come, first-served basis. The application window begins Monday and ends June 26.

Nebraska businesses have suffered major financial losses during the pandemic, and a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/f007bfa56a4f0b465f64ebd571368839" target="_blank">survey last month by the University of Nebraska Omaha</a>&nbsp;found that one in six are afraid they may have to close permanently.

The state's farm economy, likewise, has lost an estimated $3.7 billion in revenue since the outbreak began, according to an analysis this week by the Nebraska Farm Bureau. Based on the $100 million available for the farm program, state officials predict that more than 8,300 small livestock producers could qualify for aid.

"These new programs are designed to get the economy going," said Tony Goins, director of the Nebraska Department of Economic Development.

State officials will also funnel money into job-training programs and community college scholarships for residents who are now unemployed because of the pandemic. Another program will expand broadband in rural areas that lack high-speed service and offer leadership training to small businesses to help them succeed after the pandemic. Nebraska officials confirmed 290 new coronavirus cases on Thursday, bringing the statewide total to 16,315, according to the state's online tracking portal. Of that number, 212 residents have died.

Hospital capacity remained steady as well, with 42% of the state's hospital beds, 45% of its intensive care unit beds and 75% of its respirators available for use.

The state's new cases come as coronavirus cases are rising in nearly half the U.S. states. Despite the rising numbers, most states - including Nebraska - are rolling back restrictions meant to slow the spread of the virus.

(AP) - Nebraska small businesses and livestock producers that took a hit from the coronavirus pandemic will get the chance to apply for financial assistance starting Monday, state officials announced.The state will award grants of at least $12,000 to eligible businesses with five to 49 employees and livestock producers with one to 10 employees. The programs are a part of the $1.1 billion the state received from the federal government's coronavirus relief package.Gov. Pete Ricketts said state officials will distribute the money on a first-come, first-served basis. The application window begins Monday and ends June 26.Nebraska businesses have suffered major financial losses during the pandemic, and a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/f007bfa56a4f0b465f64ebd571368839" target="_blank">survey last month by the University of Nebraska Omaha</a>&nbsp;found that one in six are afraid they may have to close permanently.The state's farm economy, likewise, has lost an estimated $3.7 billion in revenue since the outbreak began, according to an analysis this week by the Nebraska Farm Bureau. Based on the $100 million available for the farm program, state officials predict that more than 8,300 small livestock producers could qualify for aid."These new programs are designed to get the economy going," said Tony Goins, director of the Nebraska Department of Economic Development.State officials will also funnel money into job-training programs and community college scholarships for residents who are now unemployed because of the pandemic. Another program will expand broadband in rural areas that lack high-speed service and offer leadership training to small businesses to help them succeed after the pandemic. Mid-Plains Community College is moving ahead with plans to begin the fall semester Aug. 23 as originally scheduled.

The college made the announcement Friday stating that MPCC is working ensure proper safeguards are in place to provide a safe learning environment for students, staff and visitors. MPCC will continue to follow directed health measures outlined by the state pertaining to COVID-19.

Campus facilities will remain closed to the general public until July 15. In the meantime, staff and administrators continue to address needs virtually and over the phone at all campus locations.

Those needing to be on campus are advised to call ahead for an appointment. Once on campus, visitors will be required to fill out a health screening questionnaire and apply a face covering prior to entering the facilities.

MPCC to proceed as planned with fall classes

LOGAN – One person was arrested after a domestic incident turned into a vehicle rampage in downtown Logan on Wednesday.

The Phillips County Sheriff's Office reported Joan D. Baird, 58, Prairie View, was taken into custody after allegedly ramming another car repeatedly on Main Street. The incident was captured on video and provided to Hays Post courtesy of the Phillips County Review.

🎥 Woman arrested following vehicle rampage in Logan

Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) have arrested a man on suspicion of numerous charges following a situation on Interstate 80 Thursday evening.

At approximately 6:30 p.m., NSP received a report from a motorist that an eastbound Dodge Charger was driving erratically near mile marker 153, between Paxton and Sutherland. The motorist also reported that the driver of the Charger had pointed a handgun in his direction as the Charger passed.

Troopers were able to locate the suspect vehicle near mile marker 170, west of North Platte. A trooper performed a traffic stop, but the driver refused to comply with commands given by the trooper. Additional troopers arrived on scene to assist and Interstate 80 was closed for eastbound traffic, out of caution for the public.

After more than two hours of speaking with the driver of the vehicle, NSP negotiators were able to get the driver to exit his vehicle voluntarily. He was then taken into custody without further incident. Troopers then searched the vehicle and located a handgun, a rifle, and approximately two pounds of marijuana.

The driver, Mario Brown, 49, of Grants, New Mexico, was arrested for making terroristic threats, use of a firearm to commit a felony, possession of a concealed weapon, possession of marijuana – more than one pound, obstructing a peace officer, and disobeying a lawful order. Additional charges are possible as the investigation continues. Brown was lodged in Lincoln County Jail.

At around this same time, North Platte Police were investigating a suspicious vehicle with North Dakota plates that had followed a driver to North Platte from the Broken Bow area.

When the caller pulled into Right Motors and the vehicle continued on. North Platte Police did not locate the vehicle and notified other law enforcement agencies that they were attempting to locate it.

The Post erroneously reported that these two incidents were related. It does not appear that they were.&nbsp;

Traffic stop shuts down Interstate 80, one in custody

Governor Pete Ricketts has officially designated June 2020 as Renewable Fuels Month in Nebraska.&nbsp; The Governor also highlighted three great reasons to use ethanol fuels when filling up a car or truck.&nbsp; Ethanol saves drivers money at the pump, it cleans up the environment by reducing carbon emissions, and it creates opportunities for Nebraska’s farmers and ranchers.&nbsp;

University of Nebraska President Ted Carter joined the Governor today to celebrate Renewable Fuels Month.&nbsp; He spoke about the University’s partnership with Green Plains to manufacture hand sanitizers for local businesses, schools, and non-profits in Nebraska communities.&nbsp;

Green Plains President, CEO, and Director Todd Becker also attended the briefing to talk about his company’s program to provide industrial ethanol from its plant in York for use in hand sanitizers.&nbsp; Additionally, Nebraska Soybean Board Executive Director Scott Ritzman took part in the press event.&nbsp; He highlighted the economic importance of biodiesels, and the use of soybean oils to produce them.

WCDHD reports new case of COVID-19 in Lincoln County on Thursday

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska saw another decrease in new unemployment claims last week as the coronavirus but the number is still well above pre-pandemic levels, according to new data released Thursday.

The U.S. Department of Labor reported 4,697 new claims in Nebraska during the week that ended June 6. It's down from the 5,082 that were received the previous week.

The highest number of weekly claims filed during coronavirus pandemic was 26,539 during during the week that ended April 4.
