LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - A 27-year-old Nebraska State Penitentiary inmate has died at a Lincoln hospital, State prisons officials said Wednesday.

A news release from the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services says Jackson Hendrick died around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday. Officials did not say in the release why or when he had been taken to the hospital, and a department spokeswoman did not immediately respond to questions about whether his death was related to the new coronavirus outbreak or was caused by something else. The news release said Hendrick's cause of death has not been determined.

Hendrick was serving a 20- to 30-year sentence out of Lancaster County for first degree sexual assault of a minor. He began his sentence in December 2015.

Last week when a 63-year-old inmate with a long-term, unspecified medical condition died at the penitentiary, spokeswoman Laura Strimple said no staff or inmates had the virus. She did not answer questions about whether staff or inmates were being tested for the virus.

State law requires a grand jury investigation anytime an inmate dies in custody.

LINCOLN, Neb. – The 2020 mountain lion hunting season in the Pine Ridge closed March 31 with seven mountain lions harvested.

Season 1 opened Jan. 1. The south subunit closed during Season 1 when the harvest limit of four (three male and one female) was met on Feb. 5. No mountain lions were harvested during Season 1 in the north subunit, so an Auxiliary Season was held. Three mountain lions (two male and one female) were harvested during the north subunit Auxiliary Season.

The harvest of mountain lions allows the population to remain resilient and healthy, while halting growth or moderately reducing the population size. This reduces the population density in the Pine Ridge to one similar to that of other states that allow mountain lion hunting.

Game and Parks provides online learning resources

LINCOLN, Neb. – Brian Pearson of Kimball won $280,000 playing Nebraska Pick 5 from the Nebraska Lottery.

Pearson bought his winning ticket at Vince’s Corner at 100 E 3rd Street in Kimball. The ticket matched the winning numbers 04, 07, 11, 13 and 29 from the March 28 drawing.

When Pearson claimed his prize at the Nebraska Lottery’s Lincoln offices, he said he’d heard through word of mouth that there had been a big winner in Kimball. When he checked his ticket and saw he’d won, he was in shock.

Pearson said he chose his numbers in honor of his wife who died a few years ago. He played her birth date as well as the date when she died.

“She’s my guardian angel,” he said.

Pearson said he won once before when a Scratch ticket from the Colorado Lottery won him $25,000.

Because of COVID-19, many churches will not be in their sanctuaries for Easter, April 12, 2020.&nbsp;

Easter Sunday can fall on any date between March 22nd and April 25th. The dates change because Easter happens on the Sunday following the Paschal Full Moon. The word Paschal means "Passover" in Greek which is a transliteration of the Hebrew word Pesach. The Paschal Full Moon is the first full moon after the Spring Equinox. This is sometimes referred to as the Egg Moon. This moon sometimes occurs in March and sometimes in April. So, April 12 is not locked in for Easter every year, but it is the date for 2020.

Easter 2020 will be remembered for a very long time as the Sunday America had no Easter. Or, the Easter where churches did not gather in small and large buildings. This is disappointing to multitudes. It is the "one" Sunday that many Americans attend church. Globally, churches pull out all the stops for presenting their best music. Ministers have been working the last several weeks polishing up their sermons.&nbsp; But it's the same story, the old story that, once a year, people come to hear.&nbsp;

Some people still buy new clothes for Easter. Americans are more casual than ever but retailers still make out good for Easter, but not this year. Macy's and other retailers just furloughed hundreds of thousands of workers. For these retailers, Easter has been cancelled and they are feeling it in their pocketbooks.&nbsp;

The first Easter didn't have a date of April 12. We don't know the date. We do know that the followers of Jesus were terrified. They had just watched him crucified on a cross and they feared they were next. Financially they were struggling because they had left everything to follow Jesus. They had "sheltered" themselves in fear of the religious opposition.

That first Sunday morning Mary Magdalene arrived at the tomb to anoint Jesus' body.&nbsp; In the middle of her sorrow Jesus appeared, spoke her name and Mary realizing it was Jesus called him "Teacher".&nbsp; She must have put her arms around Jesus because he said, "Don't hold onto me, I have not ascended to my father." John 20:17 Essentially, he said, "Don't touch me!" This story is more relevant all the time.&nbsp; The saddest weekend of Mary's life turned into the greatest day of her life as she became the first witness of the risen Jesus, later exclaiming to the disciples, "I have seen The Lord!"  Wouldn't you like to have that kind of Easter? We will miss gathering in church this Easter but experiencing Easter and the risen Christ can happen even if you are alone.

There will be Easter on April 12. There will be Easter for every person on the planet who will take the time to celebrate the old story, the good news of Easter wherever you are and whatever your situation, this Easter 2020.

Column: No Easter for America?

As our company and country continue to deal with the spread of COVID-19, we remain focused on the health and safety of our associates.

We continue to follow and communicate the CDC’s recommended guidance on behaviors like washing hands, social distancing and the cleaning of surfaces. And we have made significant operational changes in our stores, clubs, DCs and FCs this month – such as closing overnight for cleaning, starting to install sneeze guards at checkout and pharmacies, using wipes and sprayers for carts, putting in signing for social distancing and implementing a COVID-19 emergency leave policy.

Today we’re sharing additional steps we’re taking to promote a safe and healthy workplace.

As the COVID-19 situation has evolved, we’ve decided to begin taking the temperatures of our associates as they report to work in stores, clubs and facilities, as well as asking them some basic health screening questions. We are in the process of sending infrared thermometers to all locations, which could take up to three weeks.

Any associate with a temperature of 100.0 degrees will be paid for reporting to work and asked to return home and seek medical treatment if necessary. The associate will not be able to return to work until they are fever-free for at least three days.

Many associates have already been taking their own temperatures at home, and we’re asking them to continue that practice as we start doing it on-site. And we’ll continue to ask associates to look out for other symptoms of the virus (coughing, feeling achy, difficulty breathing) and never come to work when they don’t feel well.

Our COVID-19 emergency leave policy allows associates to stay home if they have any COVID-19 related symptoms, concerns, illness or are quarantined – knowing that their jobs will be protected.

Today we are also sharing more guidance with our associates regarding masks and gloves.

While the CDC and other health officials do not recommend masks or gloves for healthy people who don't ordinarily use them for their jobs, we will make them available — as supplies permit — for associates who want to wear them.

The masks will arrive in 1-2 weeks. They will be high-quality masks, but not N95 respirators – which should be reserved for at-risk healthcare workers.

We encourage anyone who would like to wear a mask or gloves at work to ask their supervisor for them, while keeping in mind that it is still possible to spread germs while wearing them.

This week we are also sharing a new framework with associates regarding healthy behaviors at work. We’re asking them to remember three numbers: 6, 20 and 100.

6 feet is the amount of space people should keep from others, when possible, to maintain social distancing.

20 seconds is the amount of time people should take to wash their hands with soap and water.

And 100 is the temperature that someone should stay home with.

We will continue to consult with health officials and experts inside and outside Walmart as this situation evolves. We greatly appreciate the work our associates are doing for customers, members, and their communities, and we will continue to prioritize their health and well-being.

Carhenge remains open, visitors urged to use social distancing

At around 12:08 p.m. the Communication Center in Scottsbluff received a complaint of a red Ford Fusion; which was actually a Ford Focus, traveling at a high rate of speed with a male “surfing “on the hood of the car, eastbound on county road F.

Deputies responded to the area, identified the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop.

The driver refused to stop and accelerated to approximately 90 mph traveling southbound on Sugar Factory Road toward Scottsbluff. When it became apparent the vehicle wasn’t going to stop, was heading into Scottsbluff and the time of day the pursuit was terminated.

The vehicle in question was observed by an Investigator with the County Attorney’s office pulling into the north parking lot at Regional West Medical Center and the occupants exited the vehicle.

Scotts Bluff County Deputies and Scottsbluff Police officers responded to the area and , with assistance from employees of RWMC, were able to locate and identify all the occupants.

A 17-year-old male driver was cited for Flight to Avoid and Obstructing a Peace Officer.

Two other 16-year-old male passengers were cited for Obstructing a Peace Officer, a 13-year-old passenger was cited for False Information to a Peace Officer and Obstructing a Peace Officer, and 19-year-old Abel Barron was cited for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Possession of Controlled Substance, False Information to a Peace Officer and Obstructing a Peace Officer.

Agencies assisting in the apprehension were the Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Office, Scottsbluff Police Department, an Investigator with the Scotts Bluff County Attorney’s Office and employees of RWMC.

The wintry scenes will come as a storm system ushers in unseasonably cold air across the northwestern tier of the country.

Temperatures will dip as much as 20-30 degrees Fahrenheit below normal for the first days of April from&nbsp;Billings, Montana, to&nbsp;Cheyenne, Wyoming;&nbsp;Rapid City, South Dakota, and&nbsp;Bismarck, North Dakota.

Winter storm warnings were dispersed&nbsp;across stretches of Wyoming, Montana and the Dakotas Wednesday morning, with winter weather advisories covering a much larger area from Idaho to southwestern Minnesota.

Those&nbsp;social distancing&nbsp;by taking a walk outside in these locales will need to bundle up amid highs in the 20s to near 30 during the middle and later part of the week when highs closer to 50 are more common.

"A potent springtime&nbsp;cold front&nbsp;is expected to bring a shot of snow to parts of the northern Rockies into the northern Plains despite recent warmth," AccuWeather Meteorologist Isaac Longley said.

"With temperatures falling rapidly during the passage of the cold front, snow will begin to accumulate in many places from Wyoming and northern Colorado into North Dakota and the Canadian Prairies," he added.

SCOTT COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man for an alleged criminal threat in Scott County.

Just before 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, the Scott City Police Department received a call about an incident that happened at Dollar General involving a man telling an 11-year-old girl he was going to give her corona and coughed in her face, according to police Chief David Post.

Just before 11p.m. police arrested Chance Archie Seamans, 31, Scott City, on a requested charge of terrorism and criminal threat.

 He is currently incarcerated in the Scott County jail, Post said.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - The three Nebraska State College system schools have joined the four University of Nebraska system campuses in canceling May graduation ceremonies, citing public health concerns.

"The state colleges are working to finalize alternative commencement plans as the traditional face-to-face commencement in May will not be possible due to the COVID-19 pandemic," state college system spokeswoman Judi Yorges said Tuesday.

State colleges also canceling May graduation ceremonies

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - A survey of supply managers in a nine-state region of the Midwest and Plains is showing more signs of the coronavirus pandemic's disruptive economic impact.

The Mid-American Business Conditions index sank in March to 46.7 - its lowest reading since September 2016, according to a survey report released Wednesday. The&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/ceec65a5218b0085f09a84807bde5091" target="_blank">February figure</a>&nbsp;was 52.8.

The survey's confidence index suggested the business leaders were pessimistic about the next six months. The index plunged to a record low 14.5 from February's 51.4 and January's 58.8.

"The emergence of the coronavirus swamped the positive confidence impact of the recent passage of the U.S. Canada, Mexico trade agreement and phase one of the trade agreement with China," said Creighton University economist Ernie Goss, who oversees the survey.

The survey results are compiled into a collection of indexes ranging from zero to 100. Survey organizers say any score above 50 suggests growth. A score below that suggests decline. The survey covers Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma and South Dakota.

"According to Creighton's March survey of regional manufacturing supply managers, COVID-19 had a smaller impact on the manufacturing sector than other areas of the economy more directly tied to the consumer," Goss said. "I expect negative impacts for manufacturers to worsen in the next month, since almost two-thirds of supply managers reported that the coronavirus produced shipping problems to and from vendors."

The regional trade numbers dropped in last month's survey, the report said. The index for new export orders tumbled to 34.7 from February's 58.0. The import index fellow to 32.7 from 40.4 in February.

A little more than half of the survey respondents said&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/VirusOutbreak" target="_blank">the pandemic</a>&nbsp;had pushed their companies to switch to, cease, or reduce, international buying. More than one in three of the supply managers indicated that the virus had caused their companies to switch to domestic suppliers for some products formerly purchased abroad.

(AP) - A survey of supply managers in a nine-state region of the Midwest and Plains is showing more signs of the coronavirus pandemic's disruptive economic impact.The Mid-American Business Conditions index sank in March to 46.7 - its lowest reading since September 2016, according to a survey report released Wednesday. Survey organizers say any score above 50 suggests growth. A score below that suggests decline. The survey covers Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma and South Dakota."According to Creighton's March survey of regional manufacturing supply managers, COVID-19 had a smaller impact on the manufacturing sector than other areas of the economy more directly tied to the consumer," Goss said. NDOT releases traffic data related to COVID-19 impacts

LINCOLN –&nbsp;The fourth death related to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was reported to the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) today. The person was a Buffalo County resident in his 90s -&nbsp;<a href="https://www.trphd.org/" target="_blank">https://www.trphd.org/&nbsp;</a>.

“We are saddened by the death of another fellow Nebraskan," said Dr. Gary Anthone, Chief Medical Officer and Director of Public Health for DHHS. “Staying home if you're sick and distancing yourself from others are actions we must continue to take to help protect those around us who may be more vulnerable to severe illness or death."

Community transmission was identified in Adams and Buffalo Counties. Community transmission is when people have COVID-19 but public health officials are unable to identify how or where they became infected -&nbsp;<a href="https://southheartlandhealth.org/" target="_blank">https://southheartlandhealth.org/&nbsp;</a>&nbsp;and &nbsp;&nbsp;<a href="https://www.trphd.org/" target="_blank">https://www.trphd.org/&nbsp;</a>.

These patients should follow the treatment and guidance provided by their healthcare provider for such conditions.

Buffalo County resident becomes 4th COVID-19 death in Nebraska

At around 12:08 p.m.&nbsp; the Communication Center in Scottsbluff received a complaint of a red Ford Fusion; which was actually a Ford Focus, traveling high rate of speed with a male “surfing “on the hood of the car, east bound on county road F.

Deputies responded to the area, identified the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop. 

The driver refused to stop and accelerated to approximately 90 mph traveling south bound on Sugar Factory Road toward Scottsbluff. When it became apparent the vehicle wasn’t going to stop, was heading into Scottsbluff and the time of day the pursuit was terminated.

The vehicle in question was observed by an Investigator with the County Attorney’s office pulling into the north parking lot at Regional West Medical Center and the occupants exited the vehicle. 

Scotts Bluff County Deputies and Scottsbluff Police officers responded to the area and with assistance from employees of RWMC; were able to locate and identify all the occupants.

Two other 16 year old male passengers were cited for Obstructing a Peace Officer, a 13 year old passenger was cited for False Information to a Peace Officer and Obstructing a Peace Officer, and&nbsp; 19 year old Abel Barron was cited for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Possession of Controlled Substance, False Information to a Peace Officer and Obstructing a Peace Officer.Agencies assisting in the apprehension were the Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Office, Scottsbluff Police Department, an Investigator with the Scotts Bluff County Attorney’s Office and employees of RWMC.
