Nebraska and Rutgers will meet on Friday, Oct. 7 in Piscataway, N.J., as the Big Ten Conference and its television partners have designated weeknight games for the 2022 season. The matchup was originally scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 8. Game time and television information for the contest will be determined this spring. The trip to Rutgers will be one of two Friday road games for Nebraska in 2022. The Huskers take on Iowa in their traditional Black Friday contest on Friday, Nov. 25 in Iowa City. Rutgers Game Moved to Friday

Alonzo Verge Jr. netted 20 of his 22 points in the second half, as Nebraska put together one of its best performances of the season in a 78-65 win over Minnesota Wednesday evening.  

Verge keyed NU's decisive second-half run, with five points and a pair of assists as the Huskers (7-17, 1-12 Big Ten) broke open a 40-32 lead with 12 unanswered points to take a 52-32 lead after basket from Derrick Walker with 11:43 remaining. Following that run, the Huskers, who shot 58 percent after halftime, kept Minnesota at bay the rest of the way.  

In addition to Verge's fifth 20-point game of the season, Bryce McGowens had 16 points, while Walker added 11 points and seven rebounds. All nine Huskers who played scored in the first half, as Nebraska never trailed.  

Nebraska won the game on the defensive end, holding Minnesota to 39 percent shooting and forcing 18 turnovers against a Gopher team which entered the contest averaging fewer than 10 turnover per game. NU converted those miscues into 25 points.  

Nebraska made its mark early, jumping out to a 9-2 lead, including a pair of alley-oops between Trey and Bryce McGowens. Minnesota got to within 9-6, but Nebraska used an 11-2 spurt to extend its lead to 20-8 and kept that margin the rest of the first half in taking a 32-21 lead.  

NU limited Jamison Battle and Payton Willis to a combined 1-of-6 in the first half. Battle, who scored all 21 of his points in the second half, connected on a trio of 3-pointers in a 10-4 spurt that made it 38-31 with 15:05 left.  Battle finished with 21 points, including five 3-pointers, and a game-high 10 rebounds.  

Lat Mayen's putback on the next possession stretched the lead to nine and started a streak of six straight made baskets for NU, culminating with a 12-0 spurt to build a 20-point cushion.  

Willis finished with 13 points on just 3-of-8 shooting, while Sean Sutherlin had 11 points off the bench for the Gophers (11-10, 2-10 Big Ten).

Up next, the Huskers will hit the road to face Iowa on Sunday at 1 p.m. (CT). The game will be televised on FS1 and carried on Huskers Radio Network.

Area sports: NSAA releases 2022 and 23 Football schedules

Nebraska Athletics announced Wednesday that reserved season tickets for the upcoming 2022 baseball season have been sold out. The defending Big Ten champions open their home season with a three-game series vs. Long Beach State on March 11-13, and Husker fans still have an opportunity to secure a spot at Haymarket Park through other ticket options.

Single-game tickets and Diamond Deal packages will go on sale on Monday, Feb. 14 at 10 a.m. The Diamond Deal package includes nine games for $54 for general admission seating on the berm, allowing fans to choose nine games from any of the Huskers' 30 home games this season.

Reserved single-game tickets are $11, while general admission is $7 for adults, $5 for youth and seniors and $1 (when purchased in advance of gameday) for children ages six and under. UNL student tickets are free but must secure a ticket in advance.

Lamar, Colo. – Knights held a six-point lead to open the second half, but it would not hold off the Runnin' Lopes of Lamar Community College on Tuesday night, 73-65.

Nico Felici accounted for 18 points and seven assists, while fellow guard German Plotnikov totaled 15 points on 4-of-9 shooting from the floor.&nbsp;

The Runnin' Lopes leapt out to a ten-point lead in the opening 9:40 of the first half, before a 22-2 run gave the Knights the 33-23 lead. Plotnikov led the surge, accounting for 10 points during that stretch including two three-point shots and one assist to Felici, who also capitalized on a shot from the perimeter.

Lamar slowly cut into the margin over the final 4:17, narrowing the deficit to four as the teams headed into the halftime break, 37-33.

Danilo Matovic pushed the Knights lead to six in the opening moments of the second half, but Lamar recaptured the lead with 15:42 remaining. North Platte continued to battle keeping the margin under five, until eventually tying the game at 52-52.

Lamar answered with back-to-back three-point shots to stretch their lead to six with 7:24 to play. Knights kept the margin from advancing any higher until the Runnin' Lopes stretched their lead to eight with 2:15 remaining. North Platte had a few chances down the stretch, but Lamar closed out the game by going 6-for-6 at the free throw line inside the final minute.

Knights (8-11) will look to rebound as they return home for a Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference matchup against Central Community College on Thursday, Feb. 10 at 6 p.m.

Knights men’s basketball falls short against Lamar

Lamar, Colo – Kayla Pope and Fumnanya Ijeh combined for 28 points, as the Knights rolled to a 68-44 win over Lamar Community College at the Wellness Center on Tuesday night.

"We had great defensive energy tonight," said head coach Jeff Thurman. "This is a solid road win, and I am proud of the way we fought for all forty minutes."

The Knights were off to a solid start in the opening minutes, scoring nine of their first thirteen points from beyond the arc to take a 13-5 lead. Knights kept rolling as they utilized some tough defense to hold the Runnin' Lopes scoreless for the remainder of the quarter, while extending their lead to eighteen.

A 7-2 run to open the second quarter pushed the North Platte lead out to twenty-three with 7:40 to play. Lamar managed to cut the deficit to twenty, before Ijeh answered from downtown and Diamond Moore-Heath connected on back-to-back buckets in the paint to push the lead to twenty-five by the halftime break, 42-17.

Janay Brauer, who finished with 13 points, opened the third quarter with back-to-back three pointers as the momentum never faded in the second half. Offenses stalled for the next five minutes, before Lamar narrowed the lead to thirty by the end of the third quarter, 53-23.

Despite outscoring the Knights 21-15 over the final ten minutes, the deficit was too large for Lamar to overcome. North Platte saw their lead cut to twenty-six midway through the quarter, but they still held the momentum down the stretch as they secured their eighteenth win of the season.

North Platte finished 25-of-59 from the field, marking the ninth time this season that they have shot better than 40 percent of the field. Knights also connected on 11-of-25 three pointers (.440), while outrebounding Lamar, 47-37.

Knights (18-8) close out the regular season with four straight home games beginning with Southeast Community College on Saturday, Feb. 12. Tip between the Knights and Storm is set for 2 p.m. inside the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium.

(AP)-An advocacy group for college athletes has filed a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board. 

The goal is to give employee status to college athletes. That would give them the right to competitive pay, collective bargaining and other benefits. 

The National College Players Association filed the unfair labor practice charges against the NCAA, Pac-12, UCLA and the University of Southern California as single and joint employers of Bowl Subdivision football players and Division I men’s and women’s basketball players. 

The move comes after the NLRB’s general counsel wrote in a memo she views college athletes to be employees.

 They say fans attending the game can expect an enormous police presence at the stadium, which will have a tightly monitored security perimeter. 

Meanwhile, patrol officers, tactical teams, canine units and paramedics will be been deployed across Los Angeles County.

Her problem wasn’t with any symptoms of the virus. It was the food.

Vasnetsova posted a picture Thursday of what she said was “breakfast, lunch and dinner for five days already” — a tray with food including plain pasta, an orange sauce, charred meat on a bone, a few potatoes and no greens.

She said she mostly survived on a few pieces of pasta because it was “impossible” to eat the rest, “but today I ate all the fat they serve instead of meat because I was very hungry.” She added she lost a lot of weight and “my bones are already sticking out.”

The quarantine hotels are increasingly the target of criticism from athletes and their teams, who are lobbying organizers for improvements. There’s a lack of transparency, too, with only some virus-positive athletes forced into quarantine hotels where their teams don’t have access, while teammates in similar situations are allowed to isolate within the Olympic village.

Olympic teams raise concerns over quarantine hotels

GRAND ISLAND, Neb.-The 15th annual Nebraska State High School Cheer &amp; Dance Championships are scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 17 through ﻿Saturday, Feb. 19 at the Heartland Events Center in Grand Island

Cheerleading categories for classes A and B will compete on Thursday as one session. The cheerleading competition will continue Friday for the first session in Classes C1, C2 and D. Dance categories will begin within the second session Friday for classes C2 and D. Class C1 Dance will compete Saturday morning within the first session. Classes A &amp; B Dance will compete in the second session Saturday. Detailed schedules of the performances are posted at http://www.ncacoach.org/cheerdance.php. Championship results will also be posted at the same location at the conclusion of each day’s overall competition. 

This annual event serves as a championship platform for high school student- athletes, but also serves as a significant fundraising event for the Nebraska High School Sports Hall of Fame Foundation, located in Lincoln. Tickets can be purchased for $10 per general admission seat by session and children ages 2 and under may lap sit for free. No onsite ticket sales will be available. The arena will be cleared after each session. Lincoln - Freshmen Alexis Markowski and Allison Weidner joined forces to score 18 of Nebraska's final 20 points, as the Nebraska women's basketball team pulled away down the stretch for a 76-61 win over Penn State at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Thursday night.

The decisive outburst by the young Nebraska natives powered Nebraska to its fourth consecutive victory to move the Huskers to 17-4 overall and 6-4 in the Big Ten. Penn State suffered its fifth consecutive loss to slip to 9-12 overall and 3-8 in the conference.

Markowski (Lincoln, Neb.) finished with a team-high 18 points to go along with four rebounds, while Weidner (Humphrey, Neb.) matched her career high for the second time in three games with 14 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter. Weidner added four rebounds, two assists and two steals.

The Huskers built a 12-point lead midway through the third quarter thanks to strong performances by Australians Jaz Shelley and Isabelle Bourne. Bourne finished with 14 points and nine rebounds, while Shelley notched her sixth double-double of the season by matching her career high with 12 rebounds and setting a new career best with 11 assists. She also knocked down a pair of three-pointers to finish with six points while adding three blocks and a steal. Neither Bourne nor Shelley scored in the fourth quarter.

Nebraska led throughout, but Penn State's Makenna Marisa opened the fourth quarter with two of her game-high 27 points to pull the Lady Lions within one at 53-52.

Ashley Scoggin, who finished with nine points, answered with her third three-pointer of the night to put the Big Red back up four, before PSU's Leilani Kapinus added the last of her 10 points to bring the Lady Lions within a possession at 56-54 with 8:50 left.

The Husker freshmen then took over, beginning with a finish by Markowski, before Marisa scored PSU's final field goal of the game with 7:14 left to cut the NU lead to 58-56.

Weidner, who entered the fourth quarter with four points, scored on back-to-back strong drives to put the Big Red up 62-56 and force a Penn State timeout. After a Marisa free throw, Markowski scored three straight before a pair of Weidner free throws with 4:31 left gave Nebraska a double-digit lead at 67-57. 

A three-point play by Markowski with four minutes left gave the Huskers their biggest lead at the time with four minutes left at 70-57. Marisa stopped the bleeding with two more free throws, but a layup by Sam Haiby, who finished with seven points and five assists, and four straight points by Weidner extended Nebraska's margin to 76-59 with 47 seconds left.

Nebraska hit 41.8 percent (28-67) of its field goal attempts, including 7-of-25 threes (.280) while knocking down 13-of-18 free throws (.722). The Huskers outworked Penn State on the glass, 46-36, including 16-9 on the offensive end. NU also won the turnover battle, 15-13, and outscored Penn State 16-9 in points off those turnovers.

The Huskers held PSU to 38.6 percent (22-57) shooting, including just 4-of-19 (.211) from three-point range. The Lady Lions knocked down 13-of-20 free throws, including 5-for-8 in the fourth quarter to account for all their scoring in the final seven minutes.

Nebraska got off to a solid start, jumping to a 9-4 edge, before Penn State answered with an 8-2 surge to take a brief 12-11 lead with 4:03 left in the first quarter. But Nebraska put together a 9-0 run that included a Ruby Porter three-pointer before Annika Stewart capped the Big Red run to take a 20-12 lead with one minute left in the quarter.

The Huskers took a 20-14 lead to the second quarter and built their biggest lead at 34-25 after back-to-back three-pointers by Scoggin and Shelley with 1:28 left in the half. Shelley finished the half with three points, nine rebounds and seven assists.

Nebraska took a 34-28 halftime lead after shooting 41.9 percent in the half, including 30.8 percent (4-13) from three-point range. The Huskers also hit 4-of-5 free throws and out-rebounded Penn State, 19-16, while winning the first-half turnover battle, 8-5. Bourne led the Big Red with 10 first-half points, while Markowski added six points inside.

Marisa led all scorers in the first half with 11 points for Penn State, while the Lady Lions hit 44.4 percent (12-27) of their shots, including 3-of-9 three-pointers. PSU was 1-for-2 at the free throw line.

 — The long-standing ban on alcohol at University of Nebraska athletic 
events is to be reconsidered Feb. 11 by the University of Nebraska Board
 of Regents.&nbsp;

Under
 a proposed policy change, the university president and chancellors 
would be allowed to authorize the sale and consumption of alcohol at 
athletic events at their respective campuses.

A
 university press release issued Thursday noted that while a 1999 
resolution prohibits alcohol at athletic events on university property, 
the Regents have approved exceptions on a contract-by-contract basis on 
multiple campuses and sites.&nbsp;

NU
 President Ted Carter said the policy reversal could create consistency 
across the NU system at a time when alcohol sales have been a frequent 
topic.

“Opening
 any university event to alcohol is a question that we will always 
approach with diligence and care,” Carter said. “Our Board and 
Administration have thoughtfully explored these issues for years, 
together with our athletics colleagues, business teams and others. This 
proposed policy change is a common-sense first step if we ultimately 
decide to consider alcohol at any additional athletic events.”

The
 change also would allow alcohol advertising and sponsorships on 
university property, if given approval by the respective chancellor.

The
 Feb. 11 meeting agenda calls for consideration of an amendment to its 
agreement with the City of Lincoln for Pinnacle Bank Arena to allow 
alcohol sales at the Big Ten Wrestling Championships March 5-6.

Additionally, the Knights will make up the Jan. 7 postponement with the Raiders of Central Community College on Thursday, Feb. 10. The game will be played at 6 p.m. inside the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium.

North Platte returns to the hardwood against the Cougars of Western Nebraska Community College on Saturday, Feb. 5. Tip is set for 7 p.m. inside the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium.

Knights reschedule games with Northeastern and Central

Two talented high school prospects signed with the Nebraska Football program on Wednesday, Feb. 2. The newest additions to the Husker roster are Ajay Allen, a four-star running back from Louisiana, and Janiran Bonner, a four-star wide receiver from Georgia.

Ajay Allen, RB, 5-11, 185, Monroe, La. (Neville)

A Louisiana native, Ajay Allen was an explosive running back from Louisiana. With Neville High School, Allen earned the nickname "Quick 6" for his ability to break long touchdown runs.

As a senior, Allen rushed for more than 2,200 yards and scored 34 touchdowns for the Tigers, which reached the state semifinals. During the regular season, he ranked 11th in the state with more than 1,600 rushing yards. Allen had 360 rushing yards and four touchdowns against St. Thomas More, including touchdown runs of 82 and 99 yards on his first two carries. Janiran Bonner was a standout wide receiver for Cedar Grove High School. He helped the Saints win three Georgia Class 3A state championships.

Bonner had 50 catches for 816 yards and nine touchdowns as a senior while helping Cedar Grove to a 12-3 record. He had eight catches for 150 yards and two touchdowns in the state championship game, including an 80-yard touchdown reception just before halftime that put the Saints ahead for good. Bonner was recognized as an all-state performer as a senior.

A consensus four-star recruit, Bonner was ranked among the top 50 wide receivers in the country by both Rivals and 247Sports. He chose Nebraska after originally committing to Georgia Tech.

Lincoln - Nebraska freshman Alexis Markowski notched her third double-double of the season with a game-high 16 points and a career-high 15 rebounds to lead the Huskers to a 50-38 women's basketball win over Rutgers on Tuesday night at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

The Huskers improved to 16-4 overall and 5-4 in the Big Ten by notching their third consecutive victory by holding Rutgers to just 38 points, matching the fewest points ever allowed by Nebraska in a Big Ten Conference game.

Rutgers, which in turn held the Huskers to a season-low 50 points, slipped to 7-16 overall and 0-11 in the conference while Nebraska posted its largest victory margin in the history of the series with the Scarlet Knights.

Markowski was a force inside at both ends from start to finish for the Big Red, pulling down 10 defensive rebounds and adding a pair of steals to lead a stingy Husker defense. The Huskers forced 22 turnovers by the Scarlet Knights, with MiCole Cayton, Ruby Porter and Allison Weidner all matching Markowski's two steals.

Junior guard Sam Haiby joined Markowski in double figures with 12 points, marking her 13th consecutive Big Ten game in double digits. Haiby hit two of the game's biggest shots in the fourth quarter, burying a three-pointer with 8:24 left after Rutgers had clawed within 36-34. Five minutes later, Haiby nailed her third triple of the night with 3:25 left to extend NU's margin to 45-34.

Markowski then scored four straight points to give Nebraska its biggest lead at 49-34 to cap a 13-0 run after holding Rutgers scoreless for more than seven minutes.

Jaz Shelley continued her impressive all-around play with eight points, five rebounds, five assists, a steal and NU's lone blocked shot on the night. Shelley's three-pointer with 6:22 left put the Huskers up 42-34 and forced a Rutgers timeout, while her free throw in the final minute closed the scoring for the Big Red. Haiby (6), Markowski (4) and Shelley (4) combined for all 14 points for Nebraska in the final period.

Osh Brown was the only Scarlet Knight to finish in double figures, notching a double-double of her own with 13 points and 11 rebounds. The nation's active career leader in double-doubles with 57, Brown was joined by Tyia Singleton inside for Rutgers, who finished with seven points and a team-high 13 rebounds.

Nebraska, which entered the game ranked seventh nationally in scoring offense (81.2 ppg), hit just 27.9 percent (17-61) of its field goal attempts, including 19.4 percent (6-31) of its threes. NU knocked down 10-of-13 (.769) free throws, including a 6-for-6 effort from Markowski.

The Huskers held Rutgers to just 32.7 percent (16-49) shooting, including just 12.5 percent (1-8) from three-point range, and the Scarlet Knights connected on just 5-of-12 free throws (.417). Nebraska's success on the boards (45-38) and victory in turnover margin (22-16) allowed the Huskers to attempt 12 more field goals than Rutgers and one more free throw.

In a low-scoring first half, Nebraska built a 25-12 after MiCole Cayton capped a 10-0 Husker run with her three-pointer with 6:49 left in the second quarter that forced a Rutgers timeout. But the Scarlet Knights answered by outscoring Nebraska 8-4 in the final 6:49 of the half to cut the Husker lead to 27-18 at the break.

Nebraska jumped to a quick 5-0 lead in the game, but Rutgers answered to take its only lead at 6-5 with 4:04 left in the first quarter. The Huskers outscored the Scarlet Knights 11-5 over the last four minutes of the quarter, capped by Ruby Porter's three-pointer with 39 seconds to send NU to the second period with a 16-10 lead.

The only other times in school history that Nebraska held a conference foe to fewer than 38 points came in a 76-34 victory over Missouri (Big 12) in Lincoln on Feb. 22, 2011 and an 84-36 win over the Tigers at the Devaney Center on Jan. 22, 1997.
