Members of the 2020-21 North Platte Community College volleyball team have been recognized for their efforts in the classroom by three national organizations.

The Knights received a United States Marine Corps (USMC) and American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for the 2020-21 season.

The award, initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors volleyball teams that maintain a year-long grade point average of 3.30 on a 4.0 scale or 4.10 on a 5.0 scale.

Additionally, the top 20 percent of team GPAs from each division are designated as Team Academic Honor Roll schools, representing the highest scholarly achievement in the sport.

NPCC also made that list. It was one of only six two-year schools, and the only one from Nebraska, to receive the honor.

“In this uncertain time, leadership matters,” the NPCC award letter reads. “While some programs lost their ability to compete [last] season, volleyball coaches continued to demonstrate their important role supporting players’ academic achievements. [NPCC Head Volleyball Coach Alexa McCall] was a critical anchor for players adjusting to a changing school experience. Alexa did not win this award, the team did, but the encouragement to stay focused on academics means this accomplishment was not happenstance.”

Avery Johnson, of Hayes Center, and Sarah Wamsley, of Sidney, both had 4.0 GPAs, qualifying them for NJCAA’s All-Academic First Team.

Katy Bartell, of Eustis; Tania Morales, of Yuma, Colo.; Allie Schneider, of Humphrey; Ruby Valle, of Weldona, Colo.; Erica Hopping, of Sutherland, and Taylor Hansen, of Yuma, Colo., made the All-Academic Second Team with GPAs falling in a range of 3.80-3.99.

Representing NPCC on the All-Academic Third Team with a GPA of 3.60-3.79 was Peyton Negley, of North Platte.

“I am really proud of how the girls performed in the classroom, especially second semester where we were challenged with covid and a different season that we were playing in,” McCall said. “The girls take a lot of pride in excelling in the classroom and continue to pass that on to incoming teammates.”

Austin Allen, Damion Daniels, Adrian Martinez and Cam Taylor-Britt were announced as team captains for the 2021 Nebraska football season on Saturday evening. Martinez, who was also selected as a team captain in 2019 and 2020, becomes the first three-time captain in the history of Nebraska football.

A tight end from Aurora, Neb., Allen has played in 32 games in his Husker career with 12 starts. He was named to the preseason watch list for the Mackey Award (nation's best tight end) and was also selected for the Senior Bowl watch list. He has caught 27 passes in his career for 373 yards, while also providing perimeter blocking for a Husker rushing attack that is the only Power Five program in the country to average 200 rushing yards per game each of the last three seasons. A Nebraska graduate with a degree in mechanized systems management, Allen is a three-time academic All-Big Ten honoree and a four-time member of the Brook Berringer and Tom Osborne Citizenship teams.

Daniels is the second member of his family to be selected as a Nebraska captain, as his older brother Darrion was a team captain for the 2019 season. Damion and Darrion are the ninth brothers to each serve as Husker captains, and the first since Ty Steinkuhler (2008) and Baker Steinkuhler (2012) were each captains as seniors.  Damion has played in 32 career games and totaled a career-high 20 tackles as Nebraska's starting nose guard in 2020, recording a tackle behind the line of scrimmage in four of the final five games. He was named to the 2021 Senior Bowl watch list. A Dallas native, Daniels earned his degree in communications studies in May of 2020, and he a three-time member of the Berringer and Osborne Citizenship teams.

The first three-time captain in program history, Martinez enters his fourth season as Nebraska's starting quarterback this fall. Martinez has started 27 games in his first three seasons, and he owns one Nebraska game record, five season marks and four career records. He has completed better than 64 percent of his passes in his career, throwing for 5,628 yards while adding 1,776 rushing yards and accounting for 53 total touchdowns. Martinez boasted the fourth-best completion percentage of any FBS quarterback last season, and he enters the 2021 season as one of only four players in the country with 5,000 career passing yards and 1,500 career rushing yards. Martinez is a member of the Maxwell Award, Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and Senior Bowl watch lists. In the classroom, Martinez completed his undergraduate work in 3 ½ years to graduate with his degree in business administration last May. The Fresno, Calif., native is a two-time academic All-Big Ten selection and three-time member of the Berringer and Osborne Citizenship teams, in addition to being a 2021 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team nominee.

A native of Montgomery, Ala., Taylor-Britt was a second-team All-Big Ten selection last season. The cornerback led the Huskers with four pass breakups in 2020, and he tied for the team lead with a pair of interceptions. His coverage ability helped Nebraska limit four of its eight opponents to fewer than 200 yards passing during the 2020 season. Taylor-Britt was also Nebraska's top punt returner last season, averaging more than 13 yards per return. He has started 16 career games and was named to the 2021 Senior Bowl watch list. Off the field, Taylor-Britt is on track to earn his degree in criminology and criminal justice in December, completing his classwork in less than four years.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska announced Wednesday that the NCAA is looking into its football program amid allegations Cornhuskers staff improperly used analysts and consultants with the knowledge of coach Scott Frost and even moved workouts off campus last year when such activities were banned during the pandemic.

Alberts confirmed the investigation first reported by The Action Network while Frost said any workouts were approved by his superiors.

“Everything we did through COVID was in the best interest and health of our players in mind and everything we did was approved by athletic department administration and campus administration,” Frost said after practice.

Citing unidentified sources, The Action Network report said Nebraska has “significant video footage” confirming practice violations occurred in the presence of Frost and other assistants.

Alberts said the investigation started before his hiring was announced July 14 and that he found out about it after he started.

“We thought it was important the two of us come out and validate what you all have read on the internet and the reports that are out there nationally,” Alberts said.

The NCAA has interviewed Frost, current and former staff members, administrators and football players, and Frost has hired an attorney. The alleged violations occurred in the last 12 months.

“We want you to know we have complied 100% with the NCAA, been very collaborative in our approach with them in terms of all of their investigation,” Alberts said. “We will continue to do whatever the NCAA has asked us to do. Our coaches, including coach Frost, have done a great job and have been very accessible in working with the NCAA as we’ve worked through these allegations.”

Alberts said he couldn’t comment further because of the ongoing investigation.

The report comes less than two weeks before the Huskers open Frost’s fourth season with a game at Illinois. Frost, who quarterbacked the Huskers to the 1997 national championship, returned to his alma mater in his home state after being named national coach of the year for leading Central Florida to a 13-0 record in 2017.

Frost has struggled at Nebraska, going 12-20 in his first three years and never finishing higher than fifth in the Big Ten West. The program has had four straight losing seasons, its most in a row since the late 1950s.

Frost is under contract through 2026, and his current buyout is $20 million.

The NCAA investigation includes Nebraska’s impermissible use of experts running special teams drills. Analysts are not among the 10 full-time on-field assistants and are not allowed to speak with players.

A year ago, the NCAA disallowed organized workouts because of the pandemic. According to the report, Nebraska allegedly relocated its strength workouts to an undisclosed off-campus location to avoid detection at the direction of NU’s strength and conditioning staff.

Frost and former Nebraska athletic director Bill Moos had been vocal in wanting to play in 2020 after the Big Ten initially canceled its season. The Big Ten reversed course and set up an eight-game conference-only schedule starting in late October.

The special teams analyst, Jonathan Rutledge, was fired in January. Moos unexpectedly announced his retirement in June. Gerrod Lambrecht, Frost’s chief of staff, resigned two weeks ago.

Moos did not respond to a text message from The Associated Press seeking comment.

The Huskers finished the 2020-21 campaign with a record of 16-3 (14-2 Big Ten) and reached an NCAA regional final. NU was ranked sixth in the final poll of 2020-21 and returns five starters and its libero, with three All-Americans in Nicklin Hames, Lauren Stivrins and Lexi Sun.

Nebraska's 30-match regular-season schedule features 11 matches against teams ranked in the top 25 and four ranked in the top 10.

Scott Frost possibly under NCAA investigation

The North Platte Community College volleyball team will begin a new season this week.

The Knights will head to Beatrice for the RKP Invite where they will take on Highland Community College at 11 a.m. Friday. That game will be followed by a second at 3 p.m. against Cloud County Community College.

Action will continue Saturday as the Knights play Colby Community College at 9 a.m. and Coffeyville Community College at 11 a.m.

NPCC will be led by Head Volleyball Coach Alexa McCall and assistant coach Kylie Wroot.

“We are excited to get started this season,” McCall said. “The players have been working hard in the gym, and it will be good for us to see some competition.”

Returning this year for the Knights are sophomores: Allie Schneider, of Humphrey; Avery Johnson, of Hayes Center; Sarah Wamsley, of Sidney; Katy Bartell, of Eustis; Madison Neely, of Broken Bow; Payton Hoatson, of Sutherland and Kimberlyn Krise, of Briggsdale, Colo.

The other half of the team consists of new recruits: Morgan Ramsey, of Bartlett; Tessa Metschke, of Chambers; Kylie Licking, of Mullen; Alexis Becerra, of Denver, Colo.; AnnaLise Glosson, of Akron, Colo.; Karley Spillane, of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Avery Okeson, of Parker, Colo.

During her time at Chambers/Wheeler Central High School, Ramsey was selected for the Northeast Nebraska All-Star Game and the Nebraska Coaches Association All-Star Game.

She made the Omaha World-Herald First Team, Lincoln Journal Star All-State First Team and Niobrara Valley All-Conference First Team in 2019 and 2020.

Ramsey was named to the Niobrara Valley All-Conference Second Team in 2018, was Niobrara Valley All-Conference Honorable Mention in 2017 and was captain of the Norfolk Daily News Elite Eight.

Ramsey’s classmate, Metschke, will be joining her at NPCC. Metschke was also selected for the Niobrara Valley All-Conference First Team in 2018-20.

She made the Niobrara Valley All-Conference Second Team in 2017, the Lincoln Journal Star First Team in 2020 and the Omaha World-Herald Second Team in 2020. She qualified for the Northeast Nebraska All-Star Game and was All-State Honorable Mention in 2018-19.

Licking was chosen to compete as part of America’s Team in the 2021 Down Under Games in Australia. She was an Omaha World-Herald Honorable Mention in 2020 and Lincoln Journal Star All-State Honorable Mention in 2019 and 2020.

Licking made the Mid-Nebraska Activities Conference Volleyball Second Team in 2019, was MNAC All-Conference Honorable Mention in 2020, placed third in state volleyball in 2018 and qualified for state again last year.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A 16-year-old Nebraska high school football player died after a heat-related medical emergency at a practice. 

Drake Geiger died at an Omaha hospital on Tuesday night after medics were called to South High School. 

An Omaha Fire Department spokesman said Geiger had a pulse when medics arrived and was treated for heat exposure and taken to the University of Nebraska Medical Center. 

The temperature was 91 degrees with a heat index of 105 at the time Geiger collapsed. 

He is at least the fourth high school football player in less than a month to die during a practice or conditioning session, according to media reports.

Nebraska volleyball senior Lauren Stivrins will return to the University of Nebraska for one more season with the Husker program.

The three-time All-America middle blocker announced Friday she will use her final year of eligibility, which the NCAA granted to student-athletes due to COVID-19 interruptions, to spend a sixth season in Lincoln.

"I want to return for another year because I know this is the best place for me to recover and get back to doing what I love most with the people I love most," Stivrins said. "This year I want to go out on a win, and that means winning the national championship. Having won one already, I know what it takes and how much of a grind that's going to be, but I think we're so ready for that. This team is so talented, and I'm really excited to see what we can do."

Stivrins earned her third consecutive All-America award and second straight first-team recognition in 2020-21, as well as unanimous AVCA All-North Region and All-Big Ten First Team honors for the third straight season. She posted 3.19 kills per set and 1.03 blocks per set alongside a team-best .468 hitting percentage, which led the Big Ten, ranked third nationally and was the second-best single-season mark in school history. The Scottsdale, Ariz., native had double-digit kills in 11 of 18 matches played.

"Our staff is so happy Lauren is coming back for a sixth year," Head Coach John Cook said. "She's so much fun to coach and someone you want in the gym, and this is awesome news for our program.

"We'll all need to be patient as Lauren works back into volleyball shape. We will make sure we do not rush her and look forward to the day she can be out there on the court."

What's the most important word in basketball?&nbsp; That's just one of the many things that Coach Washington was hoping to teach area basketball players in his one day camp put on by his organization Dribble Dive academy and New Balance basketball.&nbsp;

"I dont just come into towns to teach drills, anyone can do drills. We want to teach concepts so the kids can utilize those during a game."

For Coach Washington its an opportunity to improve the game of basketball in the midwest. Something he is very passionate about.&nbsp;

In his camp, he taught three age ranges: 3rd to 5th grade, Middle school and High schoolers.&nbsp;

"We take all that we learn in camp, and apply it to their game. We try to teach the 'why' behind all those things that coaches tell you. Once you understand the why, you become a better player."

Become a better player, something everyone hopes to accomplish.

Dribble Drive camp teaches concepts to area hoops players

The commissioners of the Pac-12 and Big 12 met Tuesday to discuss how the conferences might benefit from working together or maybe even merging.

Two people with knowledge of the meeting said Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby and George Kliavkoff from the Pac-12 were discussing the potential for strategic planning between the two conferences.

The people spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the leagues were not immediately sharing details of internal discussions. The Athletic was first to report the meeting.

The Big 12 is trying to regroup after being stunned by Texas and Oklahoma’s decision to move to the Southeastern Conference. For now, the move is scheduled for 2025, but the Big 12 has to start looking at how to move forward without their flagship programs immediately.

The remaining eight Big 12 schools —- Texas Tech, TCU, Baylor, Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State, Oklahoma State and West Virginia —- are facing a huge drop in the value of their next television contract without Texas and Oklahoma in the conference.

The Big 12′s current TV deal runs out in 2025. Bowlsby told Texas lawmakers at a hearing in Austin on Monday that losing Texas and Oklahoma could slash the conference’s television revenue by about 50%. He said the TV deals accounted for about $280 million in revenue distributed to the schools.

The Pac-12′s current television deal is similar in value to the Big 12′s and expires in 2024.

Kilavkoff, a former MGM executive who took over as Pac-12 commissioner on July 1, has said the conference is in no rush to add members to a 12-member league that includes Southern California, Oregon, Stanford and Washington.

A full merger of the Big 12 and Pac-12 would create a 20-team conference with schools in every major U.S. time zone.

The conferences could also consider an scheduling agreement or alliance that creates regular nonconference matchups in high-profile sports of football and basketball as a way of potentially increasing the value of each league’s next TV deals, one of the people familiar with the meeting told AP.
