Lexi Sun added to the Nebraska volleyball program's impressive academic tradition on Monday, as she was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Second Team.

A two-time academic all-district selection, Sun was named an Academic All-American for the first time in her career. She is the 24th Husker volleyball student-athlete to earn Academic All-America recognition. Her selection increased Nebraska's total to 39 Academic All-America awards, the most of any volleyball program in NCAA history. As an institution, the University of Nebraska has produced an NCAA-record 342 Academic All-Americans across all sports.

A native of Encinitas, California, Sun carries a 3.51 GPA, and she earned a bachelor's degree in communication studies last December. She was an All-American on the court and in the classroom, earning second-team AVCA All-America recognition in addition to her second-team Academic All-America accolade. Sun has announced that she will return to Nebraska for a fifth season this fall.

Sun Named Academic All-American

The Nebraska softball team has added infielder Mya Felder to its roster, Head Coach Rhonda Revelle announced on Friday, July 9. Felder joins the Huskers as a transfer from Oregon, where she earned all-region recognition last season.

"We are thrilled to have Mya join the Nebraska softball family," Revelle said. "Mya is an experienced and accomplished hitter who has put up impressive numbers against some of the best pitchers in the country. Her bat will be a big addition to our lineup and her character and personality are a perfect fit for our program. We are excited to have Mya wear the Scarlet and Cream."

Felder has played three seasons of college ball and will have two years of eligibility at Nebraska. She spent her freshman year at New Mexico State in 2019 before playing for Oregon in 2020 and 2021. Felder has played in 127 games in her collegiate career with 118 starts. She boasts a .326 career average with 23 doubles, 19 home runs and 77 RBIs with a .429 on-base percentage and .583 slugging percentage.

As a freshman at New Mexico State in 2019, Felder hit .357 with 16 doubles, 12 home runs and 46 RBIs. She was named the Western Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year and was a first-team All-WAC selection. Felder was also a three-time conference hitter of the week with the Aggies, and she was named national player of the week in May.

In two seasons at Oregon, Felder posted a .296 average with 14 extra-base hits, 31 RBIs and more walks (30) than strikeouts (25). She hit .356 in the shortened 2020 season and committed only one error at first base. Last season, Felder was a third-team All-Pacific Region selection for the Ducks, who advanced to an NCAA Regional Final. She started 46 games last spring and hit .274 with five home runs and 21 RBIs, while leading Oregon with 21 walks.

Felder is a native of Fresno, California. She was a standout at Clovis East High School and is one of five California products on the Huskers' 2022 roster.

Huskers Add Talented Transfer Mya Felder

Three Husker freshmen - Ally Batenhorst, Lindsay Krause and Lexi Rodriguez - are among the 12 members of Team USA competing at the FIVB U20 World Championship in Europe this month.

The United States finished round-robin pool play with a 3-0 record, defeating Russia on Friday, Thailand on Saturday and Turkey on Sunday to win Pool C. By winning its pool, the United States advanced to the top bracket of the second round of pool play, where the Americans are grouped with Brazil (2-1), the Netherlands (3-0) and Russia (2-1) in Pool E. Team USA will play each of those three teams over three days on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

The Americans' finish in Pool E will determine in which semifinal they compete during the final round, which begins on Saturday, July 17. The grand final will take place on Sunday, July 18. On the same day, the bronze medal match and all the other classification matches will be played to determine the final standings.

Team USA finished its perfect first round of pool play with a sweep of Turkey. Batenhorst led the Americans in kills for the third straight match, finishing with 11 kills on .308 hitting. Krause had two kills and a block late in set three to help the Americans turn a one-point lead into a 22-18 advantage, and she closed out the 25-22 victory with a kill on match point. Krause finished with three kills on seven error-free swings with one block. Rodriguez served as the Team USA libero for the entire match. 

After the first round of pool play was completed, Batenhorst led Team USA and ranked fifth among all players in the tournament with 36 kills.

Team USA made quick work of Thailand to win its second straight match. Batenhorst had nine kills, tying for the team high with Emily Londot, who was the national freshman of the year at Ohio State last season. Batenhorst produced her nine kills on only 17 swings, committing just one error while hitting .471, and she added one service ace. Krause had three kills on five error-free swings. Rodriguez was impressive again on defense as Team USA's libero.

All three Huskers played key roles in the Team USA four-set victory, with Batenhorst (outside hitter) and Rodriguez (libero) each earning the start. Batenhorst led the Americans with 16 kills, committing only three errors on 37 swings to post a .351 attack percentage. Krause had two kills on eight error-free swings, and she also recorded a pair of blocks. Rodriguez served as the Team USA libero for the entire match.

As the calendar flips to July the remaining schedule is getting smaller and smaller for the FNBO Nationals Legion team. With their place in Districts locked up they team is using these last few weeks to get ready for postseason play.&nbsp; This past weekend they were at the Kearney/Hastings tournament and had a tough road with good teams in front of them.&nbsp; They started off the weekend with tough close game loss to Mt. Michael 1-3.&nbsp; After that mother nature rolled into the area and put the brakes to games for a few hours.&nbsp; After the rain delay the Nationals would continue the trouncing of Lincoln East 14-4.

A second game on Saturday would see another loss 3-7 to Northstar.&nbsp;

Sunday would see the FNBO bats come to life as they double up Gretna 16-8 and finish the weekend 2-2.&nbsp;

The Juniors would go 1-2 over the weekend at the Millard Sox tournament.

The Seniors have one more doubleheader against Valentine on Wednesday. The Juniors have finished their regular season and will play in their district tournament starting on July 16th.&nbsp;

FNBO Nationals go even during weekend tournament

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) —A severe&nbsp;storm overnight with damaging winds has caused the third round of the U.S. Senior Open to be pushed back three hours. 

Winds topping 50 mph knocked over television camera towers and downed trees at the Omaha Country Club and left about 200,000 people across the city without electricity. 

Tournament officials had announced Friday that play would begin at 7:15 a.m. local time, with the hope of avoiding inclement weather. But heavy rain and high winds began shortly after midnight, and there was a continued threat of storms throughout the day.

A trio of Nebraska volleyball players will represent the United States at the 2021 FIVB Women's U20 World Championship, USA Volleyball announced on Thursday, July 8. Freshmen&nbsp;Ally Batenhorst,&nbsp;Lindsay Krause&nbsp;and&nbsp;Lexi Rodriguez&nbsp;will suit up for Team USA at the World Championship, July 9-18 in the Netherlands and Belgium. Batenhorst, Krause and Rodriguez were selected for the World Championship roster after a week-long training camp in Las Vegas, Nevada. Twenty athletes were invited to the camp, and the final 12-player roster included three Huskers. Nebraska had more players named to the U20 World Championship team than any other collegiate program. The three freshmen will join three former Huskers in representing the United States this summer. Huskers not only make up 25 percent of the U20 World Championship roster but one-quarter of the Team USA Olympic roster as well. Jordan Larson, Kelsey Robinson and Justine Wong-Orantes were all selected as part of the 12-player team that will represent the United States in Tokyo later this month. Batenhorst, Krause and Rodriguez have all previously won international gold medals with Team USA. Batenhorst was on the American 18-and-under team that won the 18U NORCECA Championship in 2018, which consists of teams from North America, Central America and the Caribbean. FNBO Nationals snag #3 seed in A-7 District

Lincoln –A quartet of high-profile matches and nine home games highlight Nebraska's 2021-22 non-conference schedule released Tuesday.

The 11-game non-conference slate features a neutral-site matchup with Auburn in the Holiday Hoopsgiving event in Atlanta and the start of a three-year series with Kansas State at Pinnacle Bank Arena.  It also includes a pair of conference challenge games with Creighton (Gavitt Games) and at NC State (Big Ten/ACC Challenge).

Men's basketball season-ticket holders should be on the lookout for an email from the Nebraska Ticket Office this week about how to renew their season tickets for the 2021-22 campaign. The 2021-22 home schedule will include 10 Big Ten matchups, nine non-conference home games and a pair of exhibition contests for Coach Fred Hoiberg, who begins his third season in charge of the Huskers.

The Huskers will open the 2021-22 season on Tuesday, Nov. 9, against Western Illinois, the start of a seven-game season-opening homestand. Under second-year coach Rob Jeter, the Leathernecks return five players who started at least 10 games last season. WIU is led by All-Summit League performer Will Carius, who topped WIU in scoring (14.7 ppg) and 3-pointers (53) and Tamell Pearson who averaged 10.4 ppg and topped WIU in rebounds (6.9 rpg) and blocked shots (20).

Sam Houston State makes its first trip to PBA on Friday, Nov. 12. The Bearkats return four starters from a team that went 18-9 and finished third in the Southland Conference with a 13-3 mark. SHSU is led by senior guard Demarkus Lampley, who averaged 14.4 ppg, including 40 percent from 3-point range, on his way to earning first-team All-Southland Conference accolades in 2021.

Following the Gavitt Games matchup with Creighton, NU returns to action on Friday, Nov. 19, to take on an Idaho State team which will be one of the favorites in the Big Sky Conference. The Bengals return all five starters from a team that went 13-11 and finished fourth in the conference with an 8-6 record. Senior guard Tarik Cool earned all-conference accolades after averaging a team-high 14.0 points per game, while Robert Ford III averaged 11.4 points, 7.2 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game.

The Huskers will host a multi-team event for the second straight year, as the Huskers will welcome Southern (Nov. 21), Tennessee State (Nov. 23) and South Dakota (Nov. 27) to Pinnacle Bank Arena. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Uptain scored 86 points while aboard Summit Rodeo’s Sam Brown to win the saddle bronc riding, which had 28 contestants, and also placed third in bull riding with 74 points.&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Contestants for 11 states and a Canadian province were money winners at the rodeo.

TOKYO (AP) — The pandemic-delayed Tokyo Olympics are shaping up as a TV-only event with few spectators — if any — being allowed when they open in just over two weeks.

Japan’s Asahi newspaper, citing multiple unidentified government sources, said Tuesday the opening ceremony at the 68,000-seat National Stadium is likely to be limited to only VIP guests. The Olympics open on July 23.

The newspaper said other large venues are likely to have no spectators. Smaller venues are expected to allow some spectators.

Tokyo organizers and the International Olympic Committee are expected to announce the policy after a meeting likely on Thursday.

Two weeks ago, they announced that venues could be filled up to 50% capacity with a ceiling of 10,000. But surging virus numbers in Tokyo are forcing a rollback.

The IOC earns almost 75% of its income from TV rights, and will still generate $3 billion to $4 billion in income from a television-only event.

Dr. Shigeru Omi, a top government medical adviser, has said the least risky Olympics would be with no spectators. He also said it was “abnormal” to hold the Olympics during a pandemic.

Asahi said the no-spectators policy could apply to events that take place after 9 p.m. and to larger venues where 50% of capacity exceeds 5,000.

VIPS, sponsors and others dignitaries will be allowed to attend the opening ceremony and other venues, but the newspaper said these numbers could also be reduced. The newspaper said this “special category” was about 10,000 people.

Organizing committee chief executive Toshiro Muto said two weeks ago that VIPs would be allowed into venues — over and above any spectator cap — and were classified as “organizers” and not spectators.

“There are many stakeholders of the IOC and so forth. People related to key clients. And for those people they are regarded as organizers of the games and they are not spectators,” Muto said.

Yoshiro Mori, the former president of the organizing committee, in an interview with Japanese television TBS, said he suggested an Olympics without spectators to other politicians in the ruling Liberal Democratic Party.

“I had said we should develop plans based on no spectators,” he said.

Mori, a former prime minister, was forced to step down five months ago as president of the organizing committee, after he was criticized for making “inappropriate” comments about women.

About 11,000 Olympic athletes and 4,400 Paralympians will be entering Tokyo, along with tens of thousands of coaches, administrators, broadcasters, and media.

The decision on spectators could come on the same day, Thursday, that IOC President Thomas Bach arrives in Tokyo. Bach is to self-isolate for three days in a five-star Tokyo hotel.

The government is also expected this week to extend quasi-state of emergency measures which end on Sunday.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government on Tuesday reported 593 new coronavirus cases. It was the 17th straight day that cases were higher than they were a week earlier. On Saturday, the capital reported 716 new cases, the highest in five weeks.

The Tokyo government also confirmed on Tuesday that it will take the Olympic torch relay off the streets for all legs in the capital. Those legs were to begin on Friday. The exception is events on small islands off the Tokyo mainland.

The relay has repeatedly been rescheduled, rerouted, and sequestered in public parks away from the public since it began in March from northeastern Japan. Nebraska guard Dalano Banton announced Friday that he is staying in the 2021 NBA Draft and will forgo his remaining college eligibility. Underclassmen had until July 7 to announce their intentions to stay in the draft or return to college for the upcoming season. 

"Dalano has told us that he has decided to stay in the NBA Draft," Nebraska Coach Fred Hoiberg said. "He worked hard in the gym and the weight room this offseason and performed well at both the G League Elite Camp and in individual workouts with teams over the past few weeks. We will do everything we can to support him as he pursues his goal of playing in the NBA."

Banton, a 6-foot-9 guard from Toronto, Ontario, Canada, played in all 27 games, including 22 starts, for the Huskers in 2020-21. He averaged 9.6 points per game while leading the Huskers in both rebounding (5.9) and assists (3.9) per game after transferring from Western Kentucky and sitting out the 2019-20 season.  Banton finished in the top-20 in the Big Ten in assists (ninth), blocked shots (15th) and rebounding (18th), while becoming the first NU player since 1974 to lead NU in both rebounding and assists in the same season. 

His 2020-21 campaign was highlighted by the second triple double in school history (13 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists) in just 21 minutes against Doane, one of 14 double-figure scoring efforts on the season. He also had a pair of double-figure rebounding efforts, including 10 rebounds against Wisconsin. (AP)-A medical examiner in Michigan says Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Matiss Kivlenieks died of chest trauma due to a fireworks mortar blast, and not a subsequent fall as authorities previously reported. 

Police in Novi, Michigan, tell The Associated Press a mortar-style firework tilted slightly and started to fire toward people nearby. 

Police say Kivlenieks was in a hot tub and fled with several other people. 

Kivlenieks was pronounced dead after first responders reached the scene. 

He represented Latvia at this spring's world hockey championship. Kivlenieks was 24.

TOKYO (AP) — Banning all fans from the Tokyo Olympics is still an option with the games opening during a pandemic in just three weeks, Seiko Hashimoto, the president of the Tokyo organizing committee, said Friday.

This would be a reversal of a decision spelled out 10 days ago by organizers to allow a limited number of local fans — up to 10,000 — to attend. Fans from abroad were banned months ago as too great a risk.

The possible about-face is being forced by rising new infections in Tokyo, the appearance of the rapidly spreading delta variant, and fears that the Olympics and Paralympics with 15,400 athletes and tens of thousands of others entering Japan could turn into a super-spreader event.

“The situation of infection changes and how it will be — it is still unclear,” Hashimoto said in a Friday briefing. “But from Tokyo 2020′s perspective, we also include an option of not having spectators.”

Yet another decision on fans could be announced next week after a meeting of the International Olympic Committee, local organizers, the Japanese government, Tokyo metropolitan government officials, and the International Paralympic Committee.

“It’s not that we are determined to have spectators regardless of the situation,” Hashimoto said.

The government’s top COVID-19 adviser, Dr. Shigeru Omi, has said repeatedly that the safest option is without any fans. And Yuriko Koike, the governor of Tokyo, suggested Friday that has been her preference too.

“We will continue to closely watch the infection situation and think what would be best, and mainly consider no spectators,” Koike said.

Koike was speaking at a briefing after being hospitalized for more than a week with what was described as “severe fatigue.” She denied she was hospitalized for COVID-19, and said she tested negative.

Koike also repeated that all Tokyo legs of the torch relay would be taken off public roads until July 16, except those on remote Tokyo islands. It is unclear what form the torch relay — repeatedly delayed and rerouted since it started in March from northeastern Japan — will take after that.

“I know many people were looking forward to this and I really regret we had to come to a decision like this,” she said.

Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga also said that the option of empty venues was still being considered.

“I have made clear that having no spectators is a possibility,” Suga said Thursday.

The decision on fans announced last week would allow all outdoor and indoor venues to accommodate up to 50% of capacity, but not to exceed 10,000.

Toshiro Muto, the CEO of the Tokyo organizing committee, said thousands of officials, sponsors, Olympic dignitaries, and others holding tickets would be allowed to enter venues, over and above any limits for spectators. He said they were not “technically” classed as fans, but rather as “organizers.”

It’s not clear if those VIPs would be allowed to attend if all other fans were banned, a situation that would likely anger many ordinary fans in Japan.

The local organizing committee expected about $800 million in income from ticket sales. That will be slashed with Japanese government entities — and not the IOC — forced to cover the shortfall.

The IOC is pushing ahead with the Olympics, partially because almost 75% of its income is from the sale of broadcast rights. Estimates suggest the IOC could lose between $3 billion and $4 billion in broadcast income were the Olympics canceled.

The official cost of the Olympics is $15.4 billion, although government audits suggest it is much higher. All but $6.7 billion is public money. The IOC contributes a total of about $1.5 billion.

Big Ten Coach of the Year Will Bolt has received a contract extension and pay raise after leading the Nebraska baseball program to a conference title in 2021. Interim Nebraska Athletic Director Garrett Klassy made that announcement on Thursday evening.

Bolt, who completed his second season with the Huskers in 2021, received a one-year contract extension and his deal now runs through June 30, 2026. In addition, Bolt will receive a $100,000 increase in his annual salary.

"The work of Will and his staff in their short time at Nebraska, both on the field and in recruiting, speaks for itself," Nebraska Interim Athletic Director Garrett Klassy said. "Will is the right leader for our baseball program. He understands the history of what makes this program successful, loves Nebraska and embraces the passion of our fan base. We are committed to providing the resources necessary for Nebraska Baseball to achieve at the highest level and compete for trips to the College World Series."

Bolt guided Nebraska to a 34-14 record in 2021, including a 31-12 record in Big Ten play, with the Huskers capturing the league crown by 3.5 games.  Nebraska advanced to its first regional final since 2007 while posting a 3-2 record in the Fayetteville Regional.

Interim Nebraska Athletic Director Garrett Klassy made that announcement on Thursday evening.Bolt, who completed his second season with the Huskers in 2021, received a one-year contract extension and his deal now runs through June 30, 2026. In addition, Bolt will receive a $100,000 increase in his annual salary."The work of Will and his staff in their short time at Nebraska, both on the field and in recruiting, speaks for itself," Nebraska Interim Athletic Director Garrett Klassy said. "Will is the right leader for our baseball program. He understands the history of what makes this program successful, loves Nebraska and embraces the passion of our fan base. We are committed to providing the resources necessary for Nebraska Baseball to achieve at the highest level and compete for trips to the College World Series."Bolt guided Nebraska to a 34-14 record in 2021, including a 31-12 record in Big Ten play, with the Huskers capturing the league crown by 3.5 games. Nebraska Extends Contract of Coach Bolt

The North Platte athletic department announced today they would have a new partner for team and fan apparel.&nbsp;

NPHS will now partner with ADIDAS and Lous Sporting Goods for all their apparel needs.&nbsp;

"We enjoyed our partnership with Under Armor and the Graphic Edge, but after talking with players, coaches and staff members, the change to Adidas and Lous Sporting Goods provides us the opportunity to wear a quality and popular line of apparel, but also allow us to use local businesses for our team stores.
