Nebraska volleyball senior Lexi Sun will return to the University of Nebraska for one more season with the Husker volleyball program.

The All-America outside hitter announced on Wednesday she will use her final year of eligibility, which the NCAA granted to student-athletes due to COVID-19 interruptions.

"I am so excited to announce that I will be coming back to play my final season of college volleyball at the University of Nebraska," Sun said. "Because of the challenges that have come along with the past year, I am grateful to have received another opportunity to play and compete alongside some of my favorite people. I will be continuing a master's degree in advertising and public relations, and I am especially looking forward to getting to play in front of Husker nation one last time. I can't wait to see what else this last chapter of my time here at Nebraska holds. Go Big Red!"

Sun earned AVCA Third-Team All-America accolades this past season, as well as All-Big Ten First Team and AVCA All-North Region honors for the second straight year. The two-time All-American led the Huskers with 3.64 kills per set and added 2.21 digs per set. She recorded five double-doubles on the season and totaled 43 blocks and a team-high 26 service aces.

Sun was a two-time Big Ten Player of the Week during the 11-week regular season. She was named Big Ten Player of the Week on March 22 after averaging 4.33 kills per set with a .408 hitting percentage in two sweeps over Iowa. The Encinitas, California native was named Big Ten Player of the Week again on March 8 after leading the Huskers to a pair of sweeps at Illinois, averaging 5.17 kills per set.

"I am pumped Lexi has chosen to return to Nebraska for one more season," Head Coach John Cook said. "She has really grown as a player and a person in the last three years at Nebraska. Lexi still has unfinished business at Nebraska. We will be on a mission this season and her experience can help our younger group get there faster. We say there is no place like Nebraska, and it is really cool that she will be able to finish her career in front of our fans. Our team has definitely missed the Husker fans."

Sun to Return to Nebraska For One More Season

Nebraska became the 33rd state in the U.S. to sanction Girls wrestling on Wednesday, May 19th.&nbsp;

The vote was unanimous 8-0. The board decided to move forward with sanctioning the sport after last year when it declined to do so. This past year girls wrestling operated as an emerging sport where girls were allowed to wrestle but did not have a state championship.&nbsp;

2022 will see that change. The board approved a one-class girls division that will compete alongside the boys at the state tournament at CHI health center.&nbsp;

The NSAA board of directors approved a new state basketball tournament schedule 8-0. The new schedule will feature a mixture of boys and girls games with teams that advance getting a day of rest before another game.&nbsp;

NSAA board approves new state basketball schedule

Following a two-game sweep of the Northwestern Wildcats last weekend, Nebraska's Cade Povich and Max Anderson each earned weekly honors from the Big Ten Conference on Tuesday afternoon. Povich was named pitcher of the week for the second time this season, while Anderson was tabbed as the league's freshman of the week. 

Povich started the series opener against Northwestern on Friday night and retired the first 11 batters he faced. He picked up the win and improved to 5-1 on the year. The junior left-hander was dominant with 7.0-shutout innings, as he allowed just two hits and didn't walk a batter, while striking out five. The Bellevue native faced more than the minimum in an inning just once when he stranded a two out double in the fourth. Povich gave up a two-out single in the fifth, but then picked off the runner, and also erased a leadoff runner in the sixth with a pickoff after he reached on Nebraska's lone error of the night.

Anderson feasted on Wildcat pitching, posting a .700 (7-for-10) average over the two games with two doubles. After notching three hits in Friday's 12-2 win, Anderson's eighth game of the year with at least three hits, the Omaha native produced his second four-hit game of the season on Saturday. Anderson now leads the Big Ten with 51 hits and leads Nebraska with a .340 average.

There Huskers have earned four weekly awards during the 2021 season. Along with the two honors today, Povich was named pitcher of the week on March 30 and Cam Chick was named player of the week on March 24.

(North Platte, Nebraska, May 18, 2021) – On May 25th and 26th, the best of Nebraska High School Class D boys’ golfers will converge on North Platte for the Nebraska State Championship tournament. The two-day event is expected to draw 90-100 golfers to the Lake Maloney Golf Course. Class D is the largest class that offers 75 schools the chance to compete at Districts, including area schools such as Maywood/Hayes Center, Mullen, Paxton, North Platte St. Pats, Wallace, and more… “We can expect many family, friends and fans to come to North Platte to supports these boys as they compete in the State Championships.” Quoted Samantha Geisler, Sports and Events Marketing Specialist for the North Platte Area Sports Commission, a division of the North Platte/Lincoln County Visitors Bureau.

The Visitors Bureau in cooperation with the Lake Maloney Golf Course bid the NSAA State Tournament following the 2017 tournament and was awarded the host location for 2018-2020 Class D Boys State Golf Championship, but due to Covid shutdowns last spring, the State Championships were unable to be played, thus NSAA granted an extension to all host locations.

The North Platte Area Sports Commission estimates that this 2-day event will bring an economic impact of $60,830 to the community through lodging, retail, food, and beverage purchases. The Sports Commission developed this estimate by using the Event Impact Calculator developed by Destinations International provided by membership in the national organization Sports ETA: Sports Events and Tourism Association.

NPHS Boys Golf: District A-1 results

The season has come to an end for the North Platte Community College Knights Softball Team.

The Knights hosted No. 7 Kirkwood Saturday for the North Plains A District Championship and fell 12-1 in the first game of the doubleheader.

Nevaeh Ramirez, of Thornton, Colo., led things off in the pitcher’s circle for the Knights. The righthander allowed seven hits and six runs over two and two-thirds innings, striking out one.

Jordan Young, of Johnstown, Colo., threw two and a third innings in relief out of the bullpen.

North Platte hit one home run on the day. Kirsten Greenwalt, of Aurora, Colo., went deep in the second inning. She and Ashlyn Wheeling, of Thornton, Colo., each collected one hit to lead the Knights.

North Platte also watched the second game slip away early, unable to recover a 10-5 loss. 

Kyleigh Sullivan, of Fort Worth, Texas, was in the circle. Sullivan allowed 14 hits and 10 runs over seven innings, striking out six.

Zoey Bredleau-Beehler, of Portland, Ore., drove in five runners. She led the Knights with three hits in three at bats and had a homer in the first, third and sixth innings.

“We battled hard today,” said NPCC head women’s softball coach Janelle Higgins. “Kirkwood is a very tough program and showed why they are Number 7 in the nation. We could have rolled over after game one, but instead left everything on the field. Our athletes played with heart and there is nothing to be disappointed about. I couldn’t ask any more of them. I am proud of our heart today.”

Kirkwood will now advance to nationals. The Knights end their season 15-29.

North Platte Community College will play a best of three series this weekend with No. 7 Kirkwood (IA) at the Dowhower Softball Complex beginning on Saturday, May 15 for the North Plains A District Championship. The Knights and Eagles will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. If a third game is needed, it will be played on Sunday at 1 p.m.

About North Platte: Knights enter the North Plains A District Championship with an overall record of 15-27, having punched their ticket to the championship with a victory over Central Community College in the Region IX Championship.

As a team, North Platte ranks first in the nation in sacrifice hits, with 45 on the year. Knights rank thirty-second in the NJCAA DII in hits, totaling 405 through 42 games this season. North Platte sports a .326 batting average this season, which ranks fifty-seventh amongst NJCAA DII teams.

North Platte is led by All-Region IX catcher, Jayden Horner who sports a .996 fielding percentage. At the plate, Horner sports a .325 batting average and has tallied 40 RBI in her 123 plate appearances this season. Jordan Young, a versatile outfielder, was also named to the All-Region IX team. Young currently has a .344 batting average, with 42 hits and 24 RBI.

Morganne Brown, the Knights starting second baseman, was named as an All-Region IX Tournament team selection. Brown currently ranks fourth in the nation in sacrifice hits (10) and currently has a .345 on base percentage this season.

All-Region IX Tournament selection Madisyn Hamar leads the Knights at the plate, compiling a .444 batting average in her 108 plate appearances this season. Zoey Bredleau-Beehler ranks second on the team in batting average, compiling a .433 average to accompany her 11 doubles, five home runs, and 35 RBI this season.

In the circle, the Knights are led by All-Region IX pitcher Nevaeh Ramirez who has compiled a 3.17 earned run average this season in 132.1 innings of action. Ramirez has struck out 129 batters and posts a 11-9 record on the year.

About Kirkwood: The Eagles enter the North Plains A District Championship with an overall record of 50-10. Kirkwood opened the season winning nine of their first eleven games. During that stretch, the Eagles outscored their opponents 107-57.

The Eagles earned their ticket to the championship by defeating Ellsworth Community College in the Region XI-B Tournament Championship, 3-0.

Eagles rank first in the country in home runs (117), second in extra base hits (249), third in runs (544) and eleventh in the nation with a .660 slugging percentage.

Kirkwood is led by sophomore infielder Sydney Albaugh, who has a .415 batting average to accompany her 78 hits, 22 home runs, 16 doubles and 70 RBI this season. Albaugh also leads the Eagles with a .971 fielding percentage. Randyn Carter is second on the team with a .410 batting average and has accounted for 41 runs on 48 hits, ten doubles, one triple, and 11 home runs.

In the circle, the Eagles are led by Kori Wedeking who has compiled at 27-3 record on the year. Wedeking has pitched 24 complete games, struck out 200 batters, and has only allowed 43 earned runs throughout the course of this season.

Knights host Kirkwood for North Plains A District Championship

EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) — Mike Polisky resigned as Northwestern’s athletic director Wednesday amid mounting criticism following his promotion last week to replace Jim Phillips.

Polisky said in a statement he is stepping down as AD and leaving the school after 11 years because “current challenges will not allow me to effectively lead our department” and he does not want to be a “distraction.”

He is one of four defendants along with the university in a sexual harassment lawsuit filed in January by a former Northwestern cheerleader who said she was groped by drunken fans and alumni at school-sanctioned events and administrators tried to cover up her complaints, according to the Chicago Tribune.

President Morton Schapiro announced linguistics professor Robert Gundlach will serve as interim AD. Gundlach is Northwestern’s faculty athletics representative to the NCAA and Big Ten.

A Chicago-area native, Polisky joined Northwestern in 2010 after working for the Arena Football League’s Chicago Rush and American Hockey League’s Chicago Wolves. He worked closely with Phillips in branding and strategy and helped develop the “Chicago’s Big Ten Team” marketing campaign.

Phillips had been the school’s AD since 2008, leading the athletic department through a period of success in competition and growth in facilities before he was hired as the Atlantic Coast Conference commissioner in December. He finished work at Northwestern in February.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Major League Baseball instructed the Athletics to explore relocation options as the team tries to secure a new waterfront ballpark it hopes will keep the club in Oakland long-term.

MLB released a statement Tuesday expressing its longtime determination that the current Coliseum site is “not a viable option for the future vision of baseball.”

“MLB is concerned with the rate of progress on the A’s new ballpark effort with local officials and other stakeholders in Oakland,” MLB said. “The A’s have worked very hard to advance a new ballpark in downtown Oakland for the last four years, investing significant resources while facing multiple roadblocks. We know they remain deeply committed to succeeding in Oakland, and with two other sports franchises recently leaving the community, their commitment to Oakland is now more important than ever.”

A’s President Dave Kaval remains hopeful of a deal, but there is a time crunch.

“We’re going to immediately start working with the league on exploring other markets and working hand in hand with them to identify which ones make the most sense and pursuing that right away,” Kaval told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. “We need to keep our options open. People know, we can’t even keep the lights on here at the Coliseum.”

In November 2018, the A’s announced they had found a waterfront location for their new ballpark that would cost more than $1 billion, with picturesque views toward San Francisco, the Bay Bridge and Port of Oakland. The goal had been to open in 2023, but now, even if approved by Oakland’s City Council this summer it would not be ready until 2027.

“We’re hopeful that our really exciting plan for a waterfront ballpark that’s privately financed will be taken up by the city council,” Kaval said. “I think it’s something that is kind of a once-a-generational opportunity to re-imagine the waterfront. We’re going to continue to pursue that and we’re still hopeful that that could get approved, but we have to be realistic about where we are with the timelines.”

Early this year, Kaval asked the City Council to make a decision via a vote before it breaks for the summer on a $12 billion privately funded ballpark project and major community development plan featuring $450 million in community benefits, but the team has been given no indication anything is imminent.

“We have an offer in front of the city council that we have not got a response on,” Kaval said. “So I think we’re still doing what we can to pursue the waterfront ballpark, which we think is a dynamic and exciting project but we are running out of time here in Oakland at our existing facility and we need to look at other options to see what might be possible.”

The team’s lease at the Coliseum is up in 2024, but the aging venue where the A’s have played since 1968 is already having lighting and flooding issues.

A’s owner John Fisher said in a statement Tuesday he will honor MLB’s instructions but remains committed to continuing to pursue the waterfront ballpark proposed for construction in the city’s Howard Terminal location, close to the popular Jack London Square neighborhood.

“The future success of the A’s depends on a new ballpark,” Fisher said. “Oakland is a great baseball town, and we will continue to pursue our waterfront ballpark project. We will also follow MLB’s direction to explore other markets.”

The A’s, who previously proposed and withdrew plans for ballparks in Fremont and San Jose, are hopeful MLB’s pressure might help push that process with the city.

“We share MLB’s sense of urgency and their continued preference for Oakland. Today’s statement makes clear that the only viable path to keeping the A’s rooted in Oakland is a ballpark on the waterfront,” Mayor Libby Schaaf said.

“We have made great strides with the Governor’s certification and release of the EIR. Now, with the recent start of financial discussions with the A’s, we call on our entire community – regional and local partners included — to rally together and support a new, financially viable, fiscally responsible, world class waterfront neighborhood that enhances our city and region, and keeps the A’s in Oakland where they belong.”

The proposed ballpark site is about 6 miles from the Coliseum and there is no mass transit. The A’s and city have said they plan to build a gondola that would go from the waterfront area of ballpark over Interstate 880 to downtown. Kaval said the gondola is approved and undergoing environmental review.

Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred has mentioned as possible expansion candidates: Charlotte, North Carolina; Las Vegas; Montreal; Nashville, Tennessee; Portland, Oregon; and Vancouver, British Columbia.

“We continue to play in Oakland until something changes,” A’s manager Bob Melvin said before a game in Boston.

The Athletics have moved twice since the franchise was founded in Philadelphia, arriving in Kansas City for the 1955 season and in Oakland for the 1968 season.

Just two MLB teams have moved in the past half-century: The expansion Washington Senators became the Texas Rangers for the 1972 season and the Montreal Expos transformed into the Washington Nationals for the 2005 season.

The Braves also moved twice, switching from Boston to Milwaukee for the 1953 season and to Atlanta for 1966.

There was a flurry of switches in the 1950s and ’60s: the St. Louis Browns became the Baltimore Orioles (1954), the Brooklyn Dodgers moved to Los Angeles for 1958, the New York Giants moved to San Francisco for 1958, the original Washington Senators became the Minnesota Twins (1961) and the Seattle Pilots became the Milwaukee Brewers (1970).

Manfred says MLB will not consider expansion until the A’s and Tampa Bay Rays get new ballparks.

Rays owner Stu Sternberg had been working to build a ballpark in Tampa’s Ybor City area but abandoned that plan in December 2018. MLB’s executive council gave the Rays permission in June 2019 to explore splitting their home schedule between the Tampa Bay area and Montreal after their lease at the Trop expires at the end of the 2027 season.

In Oakland, the A’s are the last professional team. The NBA’s Golden State Warriors moved to San Francisco before the 2019-20 season and the NFL’s Raiders relocated to Las Vegas last year.

“It is unfortunate that a couple teams have left,” Melvin said. “Certainly we don’t want that to happen, and I don’t think anything that’s been said today would suggest it’s going to, I think it’s just giving MLB and the organization a few more options to maybe look elsewhere.”

(AP) — Major League Baseball instructed the Athletics to explore relocation options as the team tries to secure a new waterfront ballpark it hopes will keep the club in Oakland long-term.MLB released a statement Tuesday expressing its longtime determination that the current Coliseum site is “not a viable option for the future vision of baseball.”“MLB is concerned with the rate of progress on the A’s new ballpark effort with local officials and other stakeholders in Oakland,” MLB said. “The A’s have worked very hard to advance a new ballpark in downtown Oakland for the last four years, investing significant resources while facing multiple roadblocks. We know they remain deeply committed to succeeding in Oakland, and with two other sports franchises recently leaving the community, their commitment to Oakland is now more important than ever.”A’s President Dave Kaval remains hopeful of a deal, but there is a time crunch.“We’re going to immediately start working with the league on exploring other markets and working hand in hand with them to identify which ones make the most sense and pursuing that right away,” Kaval told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. “We need to keep our options open. People know, we can’t even keep the lights on here at the Coliseum.”In November 2018, the A’s announced they had found a waterfront location for their new ballpark that would cost more than $1 billion, with picturesque views toward San Francisco, the Bay Bridge and Port of Oakland. The goal had been to open in 2023, but now, even if approved by Oakland’s City Council this summer it would not be ready until 2027.“We’re hopeful that our really exciting plan for a waterfront ballpark that’s privately financed will be taken up by the city council,” Kaval said. “I think it’s something that is kind of a once-a-generational opportunity to re-imagine the waterfront. We’re going to continue to pursue that and we’re still hopeful that that could get approved, but we have to be realistic about where we are with the timelines.”Early this year, Kaval asked the City Council to make a decision via a vote before it breaks for the summer on a $12 billion privately funded ballpark project and major community development plan featuring $450 million in community benefits, but the team has been given no indication anything is imminent.“We have an offer in front of the city council that we have not got a response on,” Kaval said. “So I think we’re still doing what we can to pursue the waterfront ballpark, which we think is a dynamic and exciting project but we are running out of time here in Oakland at our existing facility and we need to look at other options to see what might be possible.”The team’s lease at the Coliseum is up in 2024, but the aging venue where the A’s have played since 1968 is already having lighting and flooding issues.A’s owner John Fisher said in a statement Tuesday he will honor MLB’s instructions but remains committed to continuing to pursue the waterfront ballpark proposed for construction in the city’s Howard Terminal location, close to the popular Jack London Square neighborhood.“The future success of the A’s depends on a new ballpark,” Fisher said. “Oakland is a great baseball town, and we will continue to pursue our waterfront ballpark project. We will also follow MLB’s direction to explore other markets.”The A’s, who previously proposed and withdrew plans for ballparks in Fremont and San Jose, are hopeful MLB’s pressure might help push that process with the city.“We share MLB’s sense of urgency and their continued preference for Oakland. Today’s statement makes clear that the only viable path to keeping the A’s rooted in Oakland is a ballpark on the waterfront,” Mayor Libby Schaaf said.“We have made great strides with the Governor’s certification and release of the EIR. Now, with the recent start of financial discussions with the A’s, we call on our entire community – regional and local partners included — to rally together and support a new, financially viable, fiscally responsible, world class waterfront neighborhood that enhances our city and region, and keeps the A’s in Oakland where they belong.”The proposed ballpark site is about 6 miles from the Coliseum and there is no mass transit. The A’s and city have said they plan to build a gondola that would go from the waterfront area of ballpark over Interstate 880 to downtown. Kaval said the gondola is approved and undergoing environmental review.Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred has mentioned as possible expansion candidates: Charlotte, North Carolina; Las Vegas; Montreal; Nashville, Tennessee; Portland, Oregon; and Vancouver, British Columbia.“We continue to play in Oakland until something changes,” A’s manager Bob Melvin said before a game in Boston.The Athletics have moved twice since the franchise was founded in Philadelphia, arriving in Kansas City for the 1955 season and in Oakland for the 1968 season.Just two MLB teams have moved in the past half-century: The expansion Washington Senators became the Texas Rangers for the 1972 season and the Montreal Expos transformed into the Washington Nationals for the 2005 season.The Braves also moved twice, switching from Boston to Milwaukee for the 1953 season and to Atlanta for 1966.There was a flurry of switches in the 1950s and ’60s: the St. Louis Browns became the Baltimore Orioles (1954), the Brooklyn Dodgers moved to Los Angeles for 1958, the New York Giants moved to San Francisco for 1958, the original Washington Senators became the Minnesota Twins (1961) and the Seattle Pilots became the Milwaukee Brewers (1970).Manfred says MLB will not consider expansion until the A’s and Tampa Bay Rays get new ballparks.Rays owner Stu Sternberg had been working to build a ballpark in Tampa’s Ybor City area but abandoned that plan in December 2018. MLB’s executive council gave the Rays permission in June 2019 to explore splitting their home schedule between the Tampa Bay area and Montreal after their lease at the Trop expires at the end of the 2027 season.In Oakland, the A’s are the last professional team. The NBA’s Golden State Warriors moved to San Francisco before the 2019-20 season and the NFL’s Raiders relocated to Las Vegas last year.“It is unfortunate that a couple teams have left,” Melvin said. “Certainly we don’t want that to happen, and I don’t think anything that’s been said today would suggest it’s going to, I think it’s just giving MLB and the organization a few more options to maybe look elsewhere.”
