Gracie Haneborg and Jaylan Ruffin were recognized by Maxpreps/United Soccer Coaches for their outstanding play the week of April 19-25th. They join Abby Orr who was selected earlier in the season.&nbsp;

Jaylan Ruffin put seven shots on goal that week and got five tallies while leading his team to a 3-o record including a big win over Lincoln East.

Gracie Haneborg put up impressive numbers over the week getting 10 goals (six coming in one game!) and helped her squad go 2-1. That got the Bulldogs set to host the A-4 districts.&nbsp;

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – MaxPreps and the United Soccer Coaches Association announced today the 25 boys and 22 girls who have been named the MaxPreps/United Soccer High School State Players of the Week for their on-field efforts from April 19-25.

United Soccer Coaches uses results and statistics provided by MaxPreps.com to select one boy and one girl honoree from each participating state competing during the Fall, Winter, and Spring seasons.

Coaches wanting to nominate their players must submit statistics to MaxPreps.com in order for their athletes to be considered. Winners receive a MaxPreps/United Soccer Coaches branded letterman's patch and recognition on both MaxPreps.com and UnitedSoccerCoaches.org.

Nominations are due every Sunday by 11:59 p.m. ET each week to be considered.

NPHS Soccer: Bulldog seniors sweep player of the week honors for late April

Mid-Plains Community College will head into the College National Finals Rodeo with the number one men’s team in the region – the first time since 2017.

That’s following a whirlwind final season rodeo in Ames, Iowa over the weekend that saw the MPCC Rodeo Team rise to the top in several areas of competition.

Steer wrestler Sterling Lee, of Rhame, N.D., tie-down roper Austin Madison, of Whiting, Iowa, and Koby Jacobson, of Hershey, all won their respective events at the Iowa State University Cyclone Stampede.

Mid-Plains dominated the steer wrestling in Ames. In addition to Lee’s win, Quade Potter, of Stockville placed second; Madison was third; Zane Patrick, of Bartlett, was sixth; Landon Sivertsen, of Ree Heights, S.D., was seventh and Marshall Still, of Oconto, was ninth.

In the tie-down roping, Wynn Schaack, of Wall, S.D., was third; Jacob Haren, of Erie, Colo., was sixth and Nick Rettinger, of Amidon, N.D., finished 10th.

Rettinger also claimed the sixth spot in team roping alongside partner Cole Schmalz, of North Dakota State University. MPCC cowboys Lee and Haren took seventh in the team roping, and Jentri Hurlburt, of Arcadia, and Barrett Schlieker, of Fort Lupton, Colo., ended up ninth.

Schaack also earned the title of reserve all-around champion.

The final results mean MPCC will send a total of six team members to nationals: Schaack and Patrick in steer wrestling and team roping, Jacobson in bull riding, Madison in tie-down roping and steer wrestling, Lee in steer wrestling and Wray in team roping.

Four of them, Schaack, Jacobson, Madison and Wray, would have qualified for nationals last year had the CNFR not been canceled out of COVID concerns.

Jacobson will enter nationals as the number one bull rider and Patrick as the top steer wrestler in the Great Plains Region. Schaack is sitting second in the region in steer wrestling and third in the regional team roping header standings.

Team roping partners Patrick and Wray finished fourth in the region – Patrick in the heeling and Wray in the heading category. Wray was the back-to-back regional champion team roping header in both 2018 and 2019.

Madison is third in the tie-down roping as he advances to the CNFR and fourth in the steer wrestling. Lee came in fifth in the steer wrestling.

MPCC’s women’s team will round out the year in fourth place regionally.

“What a great finish to the season,” said MPCC Rodeo Team Coach Aukai Kaai. “Headed into the short round, we had several athletes that needed to go out and make a run in order to keep their CNFR chances alive, and they did just that. With the wins in Ames from Austin and Sterling, they were able to qualify for the college finals. Koby was able to put the icing on the cake this weekend. He’s been exciting to watch all year, and he’ll be fun to see at the CNFR. Zane Patrick steer wrestled great all year and capitalized on the opportunities that came up. Zane and Danielle roped outstanding all year long, so I was pretty excited to see them qualify in the team roping as well. Wynn stayed consistent throughout the year and was able to qualify in the top three in two events.”

As added highlights, the MPCC Stampede was named Rodeo of the Year during the end of season award ceremony in Iowa, and former MPCC Rodeo Team Coach Garrett Nokes was named Coach of the Year for the second year in a row. Nokes passed away in February following a horse accident.

Both recognitions are tremendous honors - voted on by coaches and captains from every college rodeo team in the region.

“These kids worked hard all year long, and it’s awesome to see them rewarded for it,” Kaai said. “They were able to bounce back after Garrett and really push on as he would want them to. This is an incredible group of kids, and I know he’s extremely proud of their efforts both in and out of the rodeo arena.”

North Platte, Neb. – The North Platte Community College softball team scored six runs in the sixth inning to rally past Southeast Community College on Sunday afternoon.

"We played our hearts out today," said head coach Janelle Higgins. "I am very proud of these young ladies for not giving up when it got tough."

In the top of the first inning, the Knights had to work out of a jam as Southeast put their first two batters on the base paths. Nevaeh Ramirez went back to work in the circle and calmly struck out the next three batters. In the bottom half of the frame, Zoey Bredleau-Beehler put the Knights on the board as she connected on a 2-2 pitch and sent it over the fence to give North Platte a 1-0 lead.

Southeast responded in the top of the second inning, with a three-run shot to left field to take the lead as the momentum began switch in the favor of the Storm. North Platte cut into the two-run deficit in the bottom of the inning, as a single by Morganne Brown gave the Knights an early baserunner. Kirsten Greenwalt stepped to the plate and on a 1-0 count, doubled to center field to put two Knights in scoring position with no one down.

Jenny Singer stepped into the box and on a 0-2 count, hit a fly ball to score Brown from third to cut the deficit back to one, 3-2. Greenwalt held at second on the throw from the Southeast outfielder and was stranded as the Storm pitcher captured the final two outs of the inning.

In the top of the third inning, the Storm added two more runs to expand their lead to 5-2. North Platte went back to work and once again had an early baserunner, as Ashlyn Wheeling hit an infield single. Madisyn Hamar took the next pitch and grounded into a fielder's choice, which cut down Wheeling advancing to second.

Southeast added the second out of the inning on a fly ball, which could not advance Hamar from first base. Essence McRae entered the box and on the first pitch of her at bat, doubled to center field to bring Hamar around from first. The North Platte rally was cut short as Southeast managed to record the final out of the inning, leaving McRae stranded on second.

The Storm added one more run in the top of the fourth inning to push their lead back to three. North Platte attempted to cut into the deficit over the next two innings, but strong defense by Southeast held the Knights from getting any baserunners to cross the plate.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Knights offense came alive with a six-run rally to reclaim the lead. Brown singled to open the bottom half of the inning but would be cut down as Greenwalt hit into a fielder's choice. Singer stepped into the box and singled to right field and advanced Greenwalt to second. Jayden Horner loaded the bases for the Knights on a catcher's interference call.

On a 2-2 count, Young hit into a fielder's choice which scored Greenwalt from third. The momentum began to shift, as Wheeling singled to left field and scored Singer and Horner to tie the game at 6-6.

Hamar continued the offensive attack by loading the bases once again on an error by the Southeast first baseman. Wheeling advanced the final sixty feet on an error in the Knights next at bat, and a McRae double brought Hamar and Bredleau-Beehler around to score, 9-6. Southeast finally recorded the final out of the inning, but the damage had been done and a six run sixth inning propelled the Knights to victory in a winner take all third game.

Ramirez started in the circle and pitched 3.1 innings and allowed five earned runs on eight hits and six strikeouts. Kyleigh Sullivan came on in relief and pitched 3.2 innings and only allowed one earned run on no hits and four strikeouts.

North Platte (13-26) advances to the Region IX Championship against Central Community College. First pitch of the doubleheader will take place on Saturday, May 8 at 12 p.m. at the Raider Softball Complex in Columbus, Neb.

Big sixth inning propels Knights to victory

North Platte, Neb. – The North Platte Community College softball team opened the Region IX Tournament against Southeast Community College on Saturday afternoon. The Knights took the opening game of the doubleheader, before falling to the Storm in game two.

In the opening game, the Storm marched out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. North Platte responded in the bottom of the third inning, as a single by Jordan Young gave the Knights a baserunner with no outs. Ashlyn Wheeling stepped up to the plate and hit into a fielder's choice, as Young advanced into scoring position with just one down.

Madisyn Hamar stepped into the box, laid down a bunt in front of catcher and sped down the first base line to beat the throw, to give the Knights two baserunners. An error by the Southeast shortstop, plated Young from third, as Hamar seized an opportunity and slid safely into third base. On a 1-0 count, the ball skipped by the catcher, and Hamar advanced the final sixty feet to tie the game, 2-2.  

In the fourth, Zoey Bredleau-Beehler hit the opening pitch to straight away center to give the Knights a leadoff double. Morganne Brown advanced Bredleau-Beehler to third base on a sacrifice bunt. Singer stepped into the box and grounded into a fielder's choice on her first pitch of her at bat, which allowed Bredleau-Beehler to advance home to give the Knights their first lead of the doubleheader, 3-2.

North Platte stretched their lead to three in the bottom of the fifth inning, as the bats began to come alive. A leadoff single by Hamar, gave the Knights a baserunner with no one down in the inning. Southeast quickly went back to work on defense, getting the next two batters to pop up.

On the opening pitch of her at bat, Essence McRae double to left center field and brought Hamar around from first base. McRae did not have to wait long on second, as an error by the Southeast shortstop allowed McRae to score from second, stretching the Knights lead to 5-2.

The Storm cut into the deficit in the top of the sixth, but Kirsten Greenwalt responded in the bottom half of the frame, with a double down the left field line to plate Hamar from second. The Knights held strong over the final inning to take the opening game, 6-4.

Nevaeh Ramirez added five strong innings for the Knights, allowing only one earned run on four hits and three strikeouts. Kyleigh Sullivan came on in relief and allowed only one earned run on two hits and two strikeouts.

The tide changed in game two, as the Storm offense tallied eight runs in the opening three innings. North Platte responded in the bottom of the fourth as McRae lined one into left center field for a double. Bredleau-Beehler plated McRae from second on a double of her own to cut the deficit to seven, 8-1.

The Knights took the opening game of the doubleheader, before falling to the Storm in game two.In the opening game, the Storm marched out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. North Platte responded in the bottom of the third inning, as a single by Jordan Young gave the Knights a baserunner with no outs. Ashlyn Wheeling stepped up to the plate and hit into a fielder's choice, as Young advanced into scoring position with just one down.Madisyn Hamar stepped into the box, laid down a bunt in front of catcher and sped down the first base line to beat the throw, to give the Knights two baserunners. An error by the Southeast shortstop, plated Young from third, as Hamar seized an opportunity and slid safely into third base. On a 1-0 count, the ball skipped by the catcher, and Hamar advanced the final sixty feet to tie the game, 2-2. In the fourth, Zoey Bredleau-Beehler hit the opening pitch to straight away center to give the Knights a leadoff double. Morganne Brown advanced Bredleau-Beehler to third base on a sacrifice bunt. Singer stepped into the box and grounded into a fielder's choice on her first pitch of her at bat, which allowed Bredleau-Beehler to advance home to give the Knights their first lead of the doubleheader, 3-2.North Platte stretched their lead to three in the bottom of the fifth inning, as the bats began to come alive. Knights split games on opening day of Region IX Tournament

DONIPHAN, Neb. – Benjamin Menking of Fremont won a four-person shoot-off Friday to win the individual title in the 16-yard competition at the 51st Cornhusker Trap Shoot.

Menking was one of four shooters to break all 75 targets earlier, then, in the shoot-off, he was perfect on 25 targets.

Morgan Krinke of Lincoln Pius X won the ladies’ title with a perfect 25 score in a three-person shoot-off after shooting a 73 earlier. The high school team crown went to Millard West A, on the strength of 75s from Peyton Anderson and Ben Wilweding, with a 361 score out of a possible 375. Papillion-La Vista Monarch Lady won the ladies team title at 330 and Ashland 4-H 1 won the 4-H team championship with a 350.

There were 1,406 shooters from Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, Colorado, Missouri and South Dakota competing on Friday. On Saturday, competitors will shoot 75 handicap targets. The high school shooter with the highest combined score from the two days will earn the Cornhusker Cup trophy as the overall champion.

North Platte Community College volleyball player Erica Hopping has been named to the 2020-21 National Junior College Athletic Association Division II Volleyball All-America Second Team.

All-America selections are made by the NJCAA DII volleyball committee. Hopping, of Sutherland, is the only Nebraskan to be named All-American for DII volleyball this year.

“As an athlete, this is one of the highest honors a player can receive,” said Alexa McCall, NPCC head volleyball coach. “Erica stepped into the role as a setter for our team last year and really excelled. Her stats gained her the national recognition that she needed to land a spot as Second Team All-American. She joins an elite group of just 12 others from NPCC to make the All-American list in some capacity, and we are proud of her accomplishments these two years here as a Knight.”

Hopping ended the year with 817 assists, ranking her ninth in the nation for Division II, and putting her at #23 in the record book of Knights Volleyball players with most assists in a season.

She had an average of 8.17 assists per set, which places her 27th in the nation and makes her #15 among NPCC’s season record holders.

Career-wise, Hopping finished with a total of 1,885 assists, which put her fifth in the NPCC record book. She averaged 8.8 assists per set, tying for the #5 spot in the record book.

As a freshman in 2019, Hopping was named to both the NJCAA’s All-Region IX Team and All-Region IX Tournament Team. She was also named to the Omaha World-Herald All-Nebraska Volleyball First Team.

Hopping will graduate from NPCC Friday with an Associate of Science Degree then will transfer to Nebraska Wesleyan University to continue her volleyball career.

DONIPHAN, Neb. – Zach Hinze of Republican River 4-H defeated Kahne Packer of 5 Clovers 4-H in a shoot-off to win the junior high competition in the 51st Cornhusker Trap Shoot on Thursday.

Hinze and Packer each had broken 97 of 100 clay targets at 16 yards earlier in the day at the Nebraska Trapshooting Association home grounds. In the shoot-off, Hinze hit all 25 targets, while Packer missed one.

Reilly Forsyth of La Vista Middle School won a shoot-off over Chole Hogan of Lincoln’s Scott Middle School to win the ladies’ competition. Norris 1 won the junior high team title while 5 Clovers 4-H won the 4-H team championship and Ashland 4-H 2 took the ladies’ team crown.

On Thursday, 835 junior high shooters competed.

On Friday, more than 1,400 senior high students are expected to shoot 75 rounds of 16-yard targets. They will shoot 75 handicap targets Saturday, and the combined scores of the two days will determine the overall champion, the Cornhusker Cup winner.

Huskers: 2021 Spring Game Rosters

The public will have the opportunity to show their support next week for the cowboys and cowgirls on the Mid-Plains Community College Rodeo Team and wish them luck as they head to the College National Finals Rodeo.

A send-off is planned for 4:30 p.m. May 5 at the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center in McCook. A prime rib meal will be available for a free-will donation.

The CNFR will return to Casper, Wyo. June 13-19 at the Ford Wyoming Center after being canceled last year due to COVID.

MPCC is currently sitting number one in the Great Plains Region in the men’s team standings and fourth in the women’s team standings.

An official list of individual qualifiers will be available after the season ends.

4.29.2021 NPHS Girls Soccer vs Scottsbluff - LIVESTREAM

(North Platte, Nebraska, April 29th, 2021)  – On Saturday and Sunday, May 8th and 9th, North Platte will host the Inaugural Flatrock Classic 9-11U Baseball Tournament to be held at Cody Park Softball Complex, with some games being held at Dowhower Softball Complex, fields F &amp; G. First game kicks off on Saturday at 9AM, where the teams will compete in a pool play round to be seated for the Double Elimination tournament.

“I wanted to bring a tournament to North Platte and build an elite program that can be carried down for years to come. We also felt this was the best way to say thank you for all the help local businesses gave us,“ says Jason Bryant, Tournament Coordinator and NP Nationals Coach. “Each team will be guaranteed about 4-5 games over 2-days.” A partnership on this event was formed with the City of North Platte and the North Platte Area Sports Commission. “This tournament was a vision of mine for 2020, until Covid shut everything down, so when Jason approached me this past winter with the idea, I was excited to help out!” says Samantha Geisler, Sports and Events Marketing Specialist with the North Platte Area Sports Commission, “We expect this event to grow and expand each year, this is huge for our community and the 19 total teams he got is pretty impressive for the first year!” Geisler explains that there will be 16 teams from areas such as Hastings, Holdredge, Lincoln, McCook, Kansas, Gering, Scottsbluff, Colorado, and 3 teams from North Platte competing. A total of 42 games of baseball will be played over the weekend. “In the future, we will look at adding another tournament later in the year.” Bryant added. “If you want to see some great baseball, come out to Cody Park May 8th and 9th. I promise you will not be disappointed.”

The North Platte Area Sports Commission estimates that this 2-day event will bring an economic impact of $203,976 to the community through lodging, retail, food, and beverage purchases. The Sports Commission developed this estimate by using the Event Impact Calculator developed by Destinations International provided by membership in the national organization Sports ETA: Sports Events and Tourism Association.

Spectators are welcome. There will be an admission fee of $5 per person, kids 10 and under are free.

Youth Baseball Tournament making its debut in North Platte

The 2022 Nebraska School Activities Association (NSAA) Girls and Boys Basketball Championships will be held Monday, March 7 through Saturday, March 12 in Lincoln.

The University of Nebraska will be hosting the 2022 Big Ten Conference Wrestling Championships March 5 and March 6 in Lincoln at the Pinnacle Bank Arena.

The NSAA, Lincoln Convention and Visitors Bureau, University of Nebraska, Pinnacle Bank Arena and Lincoln Public Schools are committed to providing a championship experience for Nebraska’s best in girls and boys basketball.

All of the 2022 NSAA Girls and Boys Basketball Championship Finals will be televised live on NET on Friday, March 11 and Saturday, March 12. A full schedule for the 2022 girls and boys basketball postseason and state championship events will be released at a later date.

2022 NSAA Girls and Boys Basketball Postseason Schedule Update

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Drew Lock didn’t have to wait around for the NFL draft to get the serious competition for his starting job that new general manager George Paton has been promising for months.

Paton traded a sixth-round pick in this weekend’s draft to the Carolina Panthers in exchange for veteran QB Teddy Bridgewater on Wednesday.

“Acquiring Teddy Bridgewater adds competition, experience and a strong veteran presence to our quarterback room,” Paton said. “He’s a talented player and leader who’s had success in this league in a number of different situations. Being familiar with Teddy from Minnesota, he’s going to compete and do everything he can to help us win.”

The Broncos own the ninth overall selection Thursday night and have had their eyes on several of the quarterback prospects rated a notch or two below Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence and BYU’s Zach Wilson, who are expected to go 1-2 to the Jaguars and Jets, respectively.

“We’re really high on Drew,” Paton said at his pre-draft news conference last week. “I like seeing Drew here every morning when I come in. He’s working hard and trending in the right direction. As you know, he has a lot of talent. I think he’s becoming a better pro, but we’re still going to look at the quarterback position. I’ve said since I’ve gotten here that we want to bring in competition. That’s the goal, and we plan on doing that.”

Bridgewater became available when the Panthers traded for former Jets QB Sam Darnold three weeks ago.

Bridgewater went 4-11 as the Panthers’ starter last year and struggled to win close games down the stretch. He completed 69.1% of his passes, throwing 15 touchdown passes and 11 interceptions.

The third-year pro from Missouri tied for the league lead with 15 interceptions in 13 starts and his passer rating ranked 32nd in the NFL last season. He was 4-9 overall with 16 touchdown throws and is 8-10 in two years as Denver’s starter.

After missing most of his rookie season with a thumb injury on his throwing hand, Lock missed 2 1-2 games with a rotator cuff injury to his throwing shoulder and another for COVID-19 tracing in 2020.

Bridgewater has a 26-23 career record as a starter over his six seasons in Minnesota, New Orleans and Carolina.

The Broncos have struggled for years to find a suitable replacement for Peyton Manning, who retired a month after Denver’s 24-10 win over Carolina in Super Bowl 50 and is headed to the Pro Football Hall of Fame this summer.

Manning’s induction in Canton, Ohio, further highlights the franchise’s serpentine search for a competent successor.

The Broncos are the first team in NFL history to go five years without a playoff appearance following a championship parade, and they’ve had four consecutive losing seasons for the first time since ending a decade-long stretch of sub-.500 records in 1973.

Three members of the North Platte Community College men's basketball team have received postseason honors from the Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference.    

Freshman German Plotnikov, of Minsk, Belarus, was tied at the top of the voting and was named to the NCCAC All-Conference First Team, and freshman Trevon Dennis, of Paris, Texas, was named to the NCCAC All-Conference Second Team. Jevarrick Butler, a freshman from Cleveland, Texas, received an honorable mention.    

Plotnikov was also named to the second team for All-Region IX which includes 13 Division I teams in Colorado, Wyoming and Nebraska. He was fourth out of the 18 players who earned this recognition.   

Plotnikov played in 19 games for the Knights this season, averaging 22.7 points, the best for the team, and 4.4 rebounds per game. He shot 48.8 percent from the floor, 27.3 percent from three-point range and 84.5 percent at the free throw line.   

Dennis played in 19 games, averaging 10.7 points and 4.7 rebounds per game. He shot 45 percent from the floor, 29 percent from three-point range and 55.9 percent at the free throw line.    

Butler played in 19 games, averaging 11.9 points and 3.8 rebounds per game. He shot 44.4 percent from the floor, 40.2 percent from three-point range and 70.8 percent at the free throw line.    

The NPCC team won the 2021 conference championship and finished the season with a record of 7-13.         

The Knights have been champions or co-champions in 15 of the past 17 years.

NPCC Knights Men’s Basketball earns postseason honors  

Nebraska quarterback Adrian Martinez is making it a priority to cut down on his turnovers this season. 

Martinez lost five of seven fumbles and threw three interceptions as the Cornhuskers went 3-5 in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. Fumbles in losses to Iowa and Minnesota were especially costly. 

Martinez has thrown 14 touchdown passes against 12 interceptions the last two seasons. 

He’s confident he can cut down on the interceptions with better decision-making. The Huskers play their spring game Saturday.
