The Nebraska men's basketball team is emerging from a shutdown because of a COVID-19 outbreak that left coach Fred Hoiberg with a severe case.

"I got a little scared, to be honest with you, just with everything I've had in my past with two open heart surgeries and being fully dependent on a pacemaker," Hoiberg said Tuesday. "It concerned me. And I did have chest pains. That was the scary thing."

The 48-year-old Hoiberg was born with an abnormal aortic valve and had surgeries in 2005 and 2015, with the first one spelling the end of his NBA playing career.

Hoiberg said he's undergone a battery of heart tests since recovering from the virus and everything looked normal.

Nebraska paused team activities Jan. 11. Hoiberg said he and two assistants, a graduate assistant, nine players and a student manager tested positive. That's in addition to another player who had COVID-19 earlier in the season.

All the players had either minor symptoms or were asymptomatic, Hoiberg said, and all three coaches had severe symptoms.

The Cornhuskers (4-8, 0-5 Big Ten) are scheduled to play at Michigan State on Saturday, which would make it 26 days since the Huskers' last game.

Hoiberg said he began experiencing symptoms Jan. 15, waking up in the middle of the night with chills, bad headache, sore throat and body aches.

"I took some ibuprofen and felt pretty good the next morning and thought maybe it was just a little 24-hour deal that I had," he said.

His daily COVID-19 antigen test was positive, and a follow-up PCR test confirmed the result.

Hoiberg said he never required hospitalization because his oxygen level remained normal and his fever never exceeded 101 degrees. He lost 10 pounds and his sense of smell has not returned.

The team resumed workouts over the weekend, and Hoiberg said he continues to battle fatigue and expects that to be the case for several more weeks.

Hoiberg said he never considered discontinuing the season. He said the Huskers will try to make up all five postponed games and could end up playing 15 in 32 or 33 days.

Down thirteen entering the fourth quarter the Knights cut the deficit to eight as Kanesha Hall drove past her defender and laid it off the glass with 5:24 to play, 59-51. Hall’s layup sparked a 9-3 run that was capped by an Amber Wolever three pointer that brought the Knights within two in the closing minutes.

As the intensity picked up so did the defense as neither offense was able to find any good looks at the basket over the next 60 seconds. Inside a minute to play, the Spartans stretched their lead to five after connecting on a contested three-point shot, 65-60. In the closing seconds, the Knights had looks from deep but couldn’t get any of their attempts to fall, sealing the victory for the visiting Spartans.&nbsp;

In the opening quarter, the Spartans offense rushed out to a five-point lead in the opening five minutes of play. Diamond Moore-Heath cut into the Spartans lead after connecting on a second chance opportunity narrowing the Spartans lead to three, 8-5.

The Knights recaptured the lead momentarily under a minute to play in the quarter as Moore-Heath was able to connect on a pair of free throws, 10-9. The Spartans offense went back to work in the closing minute and were able to mount a small run that gave them the 14-10 advantage after one quarter.

The Spartans run continued into second quarter as they increased their lead to nine over the first five minutes. NPCC battled back and were able to cut the deficit to six at the break, 28-22.

Jordyn Moon provided a spark for the Knights in the third quarter cutting the Spartans lead to four with 3:35 to play, 41-37. Spartans answered offensively closing the quarter on a 12-3 run and taking a 53-40 lead into the fourth quarter.

Janay Brauer, Amber Wolever, and Kayla Pope each had 11 points on the afternoon. Moore-Heath led the Knights on the glass, grabbing seven boards to go along with her seven points.

The Knights fall to 1-4 overall on the year and will hit the road this weekend for back-to-back road games beginning on Saturday, Feb. 6 against North Central Missouri College. Tip is set for 3:00 p.m. in Trenton, Mo.

TOKYO (AP) — The president of the Tokyo Olympic organizing committee had a simple message Tuesday for fellow members of Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party.

“No matter what situation would be with the coronavirus, we will hold the games,” Yoshiro Mori, who is also a former Japanese prime minister, told lawmakers. “We should pass on the discussion of whether we will hold the games or not, but instead discuss how we should hold it.”

Mori has been the main cheerleader for several weeks in Japan, backed in Switzerland by International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach as reports have swirled that the Olympics might be canceled.

The IOC has aggressively pushed back and says the Olympics will open on July 23 with 11,000 athletes and tens of thousands of judges, officials, media, broadcasters, sponsors and VIPs. The Paralympics follow on Aug. 24 with 4,400 athletes.

A decision about fans at venues is to be made in the spring, but it seems likely that fans from abroad will be excluded.

Recent polls show about 80% of the Japanese public believe the games should be — or will be — canceled or postponed again. Organizers must convince them that the Olympics will happen and will be safe in a country that has controlled COVID-19 better than most.

Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga on Tuesday extended for another month a state of emergency order for Tokyo and nine prefectures. The original order went into force on Jan. 7 during a strong surge in new cases. Cases have been declining, but the coming Olympics leave no margin for error.

“The biggest problem is the way Japanese people see the Olympics now,” Mori said. “And secondly, how we should proceed with the preparations for the games while combating the coronavirus. These two points are our primary focus.”

Tokyo organizers and the IOC are rolling out their “Playbooks” on Wednesday. These are step-by-step rule books for athletes, officials, members of international federations and others that explain what to do before leaving home. They will detail testing in Japan, frequency of tests, rules for social distancing, and strict rules of conduct until departing Japan.

Mori also defended the torch relay, which starts on March 25 in northern Japan and will crisscross the country for four months with 10,000 runners headed to Tokyo. There was early talk of scrapping the event, but heavy sponsorship by Coca-Cola and Toyota made that difficult.

“Basically, shortening — like changing from three days to two days, or one day, is out of the question,” Mori said. “What I am saying is that we are aiming to find a way to avoid close contact (during the event).”

Olympic Minister Seiko Hashimoto, a former Olympian and a bronze medalist, said athletes are caught in the middle. Most go to only one Olympics and are now distracted with rumors of cancellation.

“Athletes are under mentally challenging conditions, asking themselves if it is OK,” she said. “The government has to make sure to get rid of such concerns for the athletes.”

The North Platte Community College Knights Volleyball Team rounded out the weekend with some hard luck Saturday during&nbsp;the Laramie County Community College Tournament in Cheyenne, Wyo.

The Knights lost to Otero Junior College in five sets. The scores were 18-25, 25-21, 25-23, 16-25 and 8-15.

Alysen Daniels, of Mullen, made 17 kills during the game, followed by Taylor Hansen, of Yuma, Colo., who compiled 13. Erica Hopping, of Sutherland, had 46 assists, and Ruby Valle, of Weldona, Colo., added 25 digs.

“I would have liked to have seen us win against Otero,”&nbsp;said&nbsp;NPCC&nbsp;head coach Alexa McCall. “We put ourselves in some good situations but didn’t finish like we could have.”

The Knights also lost a game to Hutchinson Community College in three sets with scores of 20-25, 14-25 and 16-25. In that game, Daniels had six kills, and Kim Krise, of Briggsdale, Colo., had five. Valle contributed 16 digs.

“We played a good Hutchinson team, and I really liked how we played set one,” McCall said. “We controlled most of the set and pushed them pretty hard. I would have liked to have seen us respond better in the next two sets. It was good to play this weekend. It showed us how we can improve in practice and be ready for next weekend in McCook.”

Huskers news: 3 more players transfer out

Urbana-Champaign - Sam Haiby scored 12 of her game-high 22 points in the fourth quarter to rally Nebraska from a fourth-quarter deficit to claim a hard-fought 57-53 women's basketball win at Illinois on Monday night at the State Farm Center.

Haiby tied her career high with three three-pointers but it was her steal on an Illini inbounds pass with 10 seconds left and then her two free throws with 5.4 seconds left that secured Nebraska's eighth win of the season to improve to 6-4 in the Big Ten. Nebraska (8-5) also completed a season sweep of Illinois, which slipped to 2-8 overall and 0-7 in the conference.

While Haiby was huge for the Big Red again, she was far the only Husker to step up and make plays. With Nebraska clinging to a 54-53 lead and Illinois inbounding the ball from the sideline next to its bench, Husker MiCole Cayton put heavy pressure on J-Naya Ephraim at half court and stole the ball. Cayton, who was playing in her first game since Nov. 24, 2018, when she was a redshirt sophomore guard at California, was immediately fouled by Ephraim. Cayton made the second of two free throws to put NU up 55-53 and set up Haiby's final heroics.

A pair of true freshmen also played huge roles in making up for the absence of Husker starter Isabelle Bourne, who missed her third straight game with an ankle injury. Annika Stewart scored 12 points and knocked down a career-high three threes, including back-to-back triples in a one-minute span to give Nebraska the lead for good at 49-46 with 6:42 left in the game.

Ruby Porter, who made her third straight start in place of her fellow Australian Bourne, tied her career high with three threes on her way to a career-high 11 points to give Nebraska three players in double figures. Bourne scored 21 points in the first meeting with Illinois.

Senior Kate Cain contributed five points and a game-high 10 rebounds while anchoring the Husker defense in an impressive performance. Bella Cravens contributed four points and five rebounds despite battling foul trouble, while Cayton finished her first game as a Husker three points at the free throw line.

Nebraska won despite hitting just 29.6 percent (16-54) of its shots from the field, including 9-of-32 three-pointers (.321). The nine threes tied a season high for the second straight game. The Huskers also hit 16-of-22 (.727) free throws, outscoring the Illini 16-3 at the foul line.

Defense Carries Huskers at Illinois

Fans of the McCook Community College Indians and North Platte Community College Knights will be able to cheer on their teams in person this semester. Sports venues at both MCC and NPCC will be allowed to fill to half capacity on a first-come, first-served basis.

The colleges’ sports seasons were interrupted last spring and cancelled entirely for fall due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Numerous precautions have been put in place for this year ahead of a highly anticipated return to athletic events.

All protocols are set by college administrators in accordance with the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services Directed Health Measures and local health departments.

In addition to limiting attendance and heightening disinfection practices, the protocols include requiring those in attendance to wear masks and adhere to social distancing requirements.

It’s up to the discretion of each college’s athletic director whether or not temperature checks will be conducted at the door. If they are, no one with a temperature of 100.4 F or higher will be allowed to enter.

Outside food is also prohibited in the facility before, during or after athletic events, and seating will be arranged to avoid spectator/athlete interactions.

All visitors will be required to exit the facility immediately after the contests as opposed to gathering on the gym floor or anywhere else in the building.

The decision to allow spectators at home events may change at any time. Protocols may also be adapted for special events such as tournaments. <p>Story by Heather Johnson</p><p>Fans of the McCook Community College Indians and North Platte Community College Knights will be able to cheer on their teams in person this semester. Sports venues at both MCC and NPCC will be allowed to fill to half capacity on a first-come, first-served basis.</p><p>The colleges’ sports seasons were interrupted last spring and cancelled entirely for fall due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Numerous precautions have been put in place for this year ahead of a highly anticipated return to athletic events.</p><p>All protocols are set by college administrators in accordance with the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services Directed Health Measures and local health departments.</p><p>In addition to limiting attendance and heightening disinfection practices, the protocols include requiring those in attendance to wear masks and adhere to social distancing requirements.</p><p>It’s up to the discretion of each college’s athletic director whether or not temperature checks will be conducted at the door. If they are, no one with a temperature of 100.4 F or higher will be allowed to enter.</p><p>Outside food is also prohibited in the facility before, during or after athletic events, and seating will be arranged to avoid spectator/athlete interactions.</p><p>All visitors will be required to exit the facility immediately after the contests as opposed to gathering on the gym floor or anywhere else in the building.</p><p>The decision to allow spectators at home events may change at any time. Protocols may also be adapted for special events such as tournaments. In those cases, it’s best to call ahead to see what the guidelines are.
