&nbsp; BLOOMINGTON, Ind.&nbsp;- The No. 5 Nebraska volleyball team swept its second straight match at Indiana, claiming a 25-21, 25-16, 25-19 win at Wilkinson Hall on Saturday night. Lexi Sun&nbsp;had 11 kills, seven digs and three blocks to lead the Huskers (2-0), who&nbsp;opened a season with back-to-back sweeps for the first time since 2015.&nbsp;Madi Kubik&nbsp;had eight kills and seven digs, and&nbsp;Riley Zuhn&nbsp;had eight kills and three blocks while hitting .316.&nbsp; Lauren Stivrins&nbsp;turned in an efficient performance with seven kills on .429 hitting to go with six blocks. She tied teammate&nbsp;Callie Schwarzenbach&nbsp;for the team high in blocks, as Schwarzenbach produced six blocks with four kills.&nbsp; Nicklin Hames&nbsp;had 31 assists and eight digs as Nebraska hit .228 for the match. The Big Red turned in a stellar defensive effort, holding Indiana to .048 hitting, thanks in part to 12 blocks and 43 digs.&nbsp; Libero&nbsp;Kenzie Knuckles&nbsp;had a team-high 12 digs and added three set assists.&nbsp;The Huskers served four aces to two for Indiana. Both teams had seven service errors.&nbsp; Indiana (0-2) got 12 kills from Breana Edwards and nine from Tommi Stockham.&nbsp; Set 1:&nbsp;An ace by Knuckles started a 3-0 Husker run that put NU up 6-3. Kubik posted a pair of kills before one by Sun made it 9-5 Big Red. Schwarzenbach&nbsp;posted a block to make it 11-7, but a 4-0 Indiana run tied the set at 12-12. Nebraska, and all of college football really, loves their rivalry games. Now Nebraska is getting a great one back, at least for two years. Do the words "Boomer Sooner" mean anything to you?&nbsp;

What allows college football to stand out as a sport is the existence of the regional rivalries that can grow out of years and years of taking the field against each other.&nbsp; The Huskers have not really had their fair share of these as of late. Iowa on Black Friday maybe? There could be one with Wisconsin growing but we still are years away from that gaining that "rival" feel.

Part of the problem is, the Big 10 games are just too far away for Huskers faithful to travel. Who wants to drive (fly?!?) all the way to Maryland for an away game. Sure there will be some diehards who make the trip but we don't see the "sea of red" that we used to. Take for example this past year as the Huskers finished out a two year home and home against Colorado. CU's stadium looked more like a Husker home game than where the Buffs play!&nbsp;&nbsp; To their credit, Nebraska has tried to add these type of games back into the schedule, the aforementioned Colorado Home and Home (which they will do again in the late 2020's).&nbsp;

But to Husker fans, the Colorado games were just a little rivalry. It was like going to visit your snotty little brother and putting him in his place.&nbsp;

Nebraska and Oklahoma just recently announced they would play a home and home. Best part, you don't even have to wait!&nbsp;

Nebraska will visit Norman on Sept. 18, 2021, and the Sooners will take the trip to Lincoln on Sept. 17, 2022.

If that 2021 date sounds familiar it should. It's the 50th anniversary of the 1971 "Game of the Century" where Nebraska won 35-31.

Sooners AD Joe Castiglione said it best:&nbsp;

"Classic rivalries like Oklahoma-Nebraska are part of college football's historic fabric,&nbsp;The ability to rekindle a fabled series between two tradition-rich programs and two extremely loyal and passionate fan bases was very important to both universities."

Rivalries ARE college football. The fans love them, the teams love them, and College football loves them.&nbsp;

Aaron made his last public appearance less than two weeks ago when he received the COVID-19 vaccine.

“Hammerin’ Hank” set a wide array of career hitting records during a 23-year career spent mostly with the Milwaukee and Atlanta Braves, including RBIs, extra-base hits and total bases.

But the Hall of Famer will be remembered for one swing above all others, the one that made him baseball’s home-run king.

North Platte, Neb. – The Knights women’s basketball team couldn’t cool off the Trojans hot start to the second half, falling to Colby Community College in the season opener on Wednesday evening, 65-54. 

North Platte shot 37.7 percent (19 of 51) from the field and 18.9 percent (3 of 16) from the three-point line against Colby. The Trojans narrowly outrebounded the Knights 36-32 and forced 31 turnovers.

The Knights were led by sophomore Amber Wolever’s 12 points. Sophomore Janay Brauer followed with 11 points to go with her four steals and two rebounds. Jada Ballard was the top rebounder on the night pulling in seven boards in just over 19 minutes of action.

In the second quarter, the Knights trimmed the Trojans lead to 22-19 after Brauer connected on the back end of a set of free throws with 4:51 remaining. The Knights energy picked up on the defensive end, as they shut down the Trojans over the course of the next two and a half minutes.

Knights again chipped into the lead after Wolever connected on a pair of free throws after she was fouled underneath her own basket. After a timeout, the Trojans adjusted their offense and took a 32-25 lead into the break.

Colby fired on all cylinders to start the second half extending their lead to 22, midway through the third quarter. The Knights began to chip away at the lead by the 6:31 mark of the fourth quarter after Ballard took advantage of an and one opportunity, cutting the lead to 57-40.

The Knights would receive a few more opportunities in the paint over the course of the final minutes but the comeback was insurmountable as the clock hit all zeros on a Trojans 65-54 win.

Knights will be back in action on Friday as they travel to Torrington, Wyo. to take on Eastern Wyoming. Tipoff is set for 6:30pm.

Knights fall in season opener to Trojans

Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott is stepping down at the end of June, ending an 11-year tenure in which the conference landed a transformational billion dollar television deal but struggled to keep up with some of its Power Five peers when it came to revenue and exposure.

The Pac-12 announced Wednesday night that the 56-year-old Scott and university presidents who make up the league’s executive committee mutually agreed that he would not seek a new contract.

“It’s been quite the amazing journey,” Scott told AP. “There’s a lot of change going on in college sports. There’s been a lot of change in our conference. I’m ready for the next chapter.”

Scott’s current deal was set to expire June 2022, but instead he will finish out this academic year to assist with the transition to his successor.

Scott said the decision came together quickly after a routine meeting with the Pac-12′s executive committee last week.

“There’s never a perfect time, but this felt pretty good,” Scott said.

Scott came to the Pac-12 in 2009 with no experience as a college sports administrator after two decades working in professional tennis, including a stint as the chairman and CEO of the Women’s Tennis Association. He replaced Tom Hansen in 2009.

“We appreciate Larry’s pioneering efforts in growing the conference by adding new competitive university programs and accelerating the Pac-12 to television network parity with the other conferences,” University of Oregon President Michael Schill said in a statement. “At one point, our television agreement was the most lucrative in the nation and the debut of the Pac-12 Network helped deliver our championship brand to US and global markets on traditional and digital platforms. That said, the intercollegiate athletics marketplace doesn’t remain static and now is a good time to bring in a new leader who will help us develop our go-forward strategy.”

Under Scott, the Pac-10 became the Pac-12 by adding Colorado and Utah in 2011 and created a football championship game. The additions helped the conference secure a 12-year $3 billion media rights deal with Fox and ESPN that set the standard in the college sports market at the time.

That move came after Scott made a bold attempt to raid the Big 12, at first trying to woo Texas and five other schools to create a 16-team conference and then again circling back on Texas and Oklahoma.

Scott’s grandest plans never came to fruition. The additions did help the conference secure a 12-year, $3 billion media rights deal with Fox and ESPN. The contract set the standard in the college sports market in 2011 and brought Pac-12 football unprecedented national TV exposure. The Pac-12 also agreed to equal revenue sharing for the first time under the new deal.

Those contract are up in 2024 and negotiating the next media rights deals will be a top priority of the next Pac-12 commissioner.

Scott’s other daring move has not panned out as well. The Pac-12 Network, launched in 2012, followed the lead of Big Ten Network but never could replicate it as a money-maker for its members.

The Pac-12 chose not to partner with an existing cable network the way the Big Ten did with Fox and the Southeastern Conference later did with ESPN.

Scott hoped that by the conference having full ownership of the network, it would eventually position the schools to cash in big on a changing media landscape, less dependent on traditional TV networks.

That never panned out. While Pac-12 revenues have steadily risen in recent years — the conference distributed more than $32 million per school after the 2018-19 academic year — its members still lag behind the Big Ten ($55 million per school) and SEC ($45 million per school).

Scott has also been criticized for moving the Pac-12 offices out of Walnut Creek, California, to San Francisco, which drove up operating costs. He is currently the highest paid conference commissioner at $5.4 million for 2019-20, according to USA Today.

At the time, though, the move to San Francisco fell in line with the Pac-12 presidents’ charge to Scott: Modernize a conference that had fallen way behind its peers in major college sports.

The Pac-12′s highest profile sports, football and men’s basketball, have failed to produce national champions during Scott’s tenure, and some of his long-term plans failed to satisfy the short-term needs of administrators within the conference.

The conference took off in the first few years of Scott’s tenure and he was lauded as a visionary. The road got bumpy after that for Scott, and his time in the Pac-12 will come to end after the most difficult year of college sports trying to play through the pandemic.

“This year was tougher than any that we’ve had,” Scott said. “But it also made you step back and reflect on what’s most important in your life.”

Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott stepping down at end of June

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes remained in the NFL’s concussion protocol Wednesday, but practiced in a limited capacity, raising hopes that the reigning Super Bowl MVP can play in Sunday’s AFC title game against Buffalo.

The Chiefs typically breeze through their midweek practice with little contact before ramping things up with their longest workout Thursday, and coach Andy Reid said afterward that fit perfectly with what Mahomes was able to do.

“He looked good,” Reid said. “He’s in the protocol so there’s only certain things he can do, but he took all the snaps and he feels good. So, I mean, we’re just going to follow this protocol as close as we possibly can.”

There are five steps in the league’s return-to-play protocol: rest until signs and symptoms return to baseline clearance to begin cardio; stretching and balance training with medical oversight; an increase in exercises that includes monitored strength training; the resumption of non-contact football activities; and finally, the player is cleared by team physicians and passes an independent neurological exam, at which point he is cleared to practice and play.

Reid didn’t specify which step Mahomes was in Wednesday, but the work he described coincides with the fourth step. If all goes well, that could mean the Chiefs’ quarterback is cleared to participate more fully in practice Thursday or Friday.

“He’s done well up to this point and they just progress you through the day,” Reid said, “so today was limited work and no contact, I think was the schedule for today. And that’s kind of what we’re doing on Wednesday, so it fit perfectly with that.”

Mahomes was hurt in the third quarter of last Sunday’s 22-17 victory over the Cleveland Browns when he was tackled around the neck while keeping the ball on a quarterback option. His head did not appear to strike the ground hard — if at all — and that led to reports that he had tweaked a nerve that runs up the neck.

Chad Henne finished the game and would be the starter if Mahomes was unable to play against the Bills.

“It’s definitely not the easiest if you don’t get the reps during the week,” Henne said, “but mentally you have to stay in it. When Patrick was in last week, during every practice, Matt (Moore) and I are in the back doing our drops, our progressions. That doesn’t change. After practice we get the throws we need that Patrick took and we go about our business.”

The return of Mahomes was only the start of the positive injury news for Kansas City.

Defensive back Bashaud Breeland, who also left the Browns game with a concussion, got in some limited work as the Chiefs moved practice from outdoors inside because of gusty winds.

The availability of their No. 1 cornerback is important with Bills quarterback Josh Allen riding a hot streak and All-Pro wide receiver Stefon Diggs coming to town.

Running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire and wide receiver Sammy Watkins also practiced Wednesday, which means the Chiefs could have a full complement of playmakers regardless of their quarterback for the first time in weeks.

Edwards-Helaire, who was fourth among rookies with 1,100 yards from scrimmage this season, sustained a high-ankle sprain in Week 15 against New Orleans and missed the final two games of the regular season. He returned to practice last Wednesday but was held out the next two days, and he was inactive for the Chiefs’ playoff game against Cleveland.

The injury-prone Watkins hurt his calf muscle in Week 15 against Atlanta. He sat out the regular-season finale and did not practice last week, joining Edwards-Helaire on the inactive list for the Browns.

“It’ll be good to have both of those guys back,” Chiefs wide receiver Mecole Hardman said. “Hopefully they can play with us and take the necessary steps to be fully healthy or healthy enough to get some production from them.”

NOTES: The only player who did not practice in some capacity Wednesday was linebacker Willie Gay Jr. He’s been out with a sprained ankle. ... Diggs isn’t the only All-Pro wide receiver on the field Sunday, and Chiefs counterpart Tyreek Hill was sure to make everyone remember it. He continually referenced a dig by Jalen Ramsey from a couple of years ago, when the Jaguars cornerback made it a point to say Hill had been voted an All-Pro as a return specialist as a rookie. “(Diggs) is one of the top receivers in the game and I really respect him,” Hill said, “so we just got to see who has the better game, him or (Travis) Kelce, but I’m still just a return specialist.”

Chiefs’ Mahomes practices, remains in concussion protocol

Lincoln - Nebraska went cold late in the second half and Minnesota connected on a season-high 15 three-pointers as the Husker women's basketball team dropped a 76-71 decision to the visiting Golden Gophers on Tuesday afternoon at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Sam Haiby led Nebraska with her third consecutive double-double by scoring a game-high 25 points to go along with a career-high-tying 12 rebounds, but it was not enough to prevent the Huskers from suffering their first home loss of the season. NU dropped to 7-5 overall and 5-4 in the Big Ten, while Minnesota improved to 3-7 and 2-6 in the conference.

Ashley Scoggin added a career-high-tying 16 points for the Husker backcourt, including four three-pointers. Scoggin's final three came with 8:48 left in the third quarter after Nebraska opened the game 7-for-13 from long range in the first half. But the Big Red did not knock down another triple until Haiby's second three of the game with 2.7 seconds left. By that point, Minnesota had control of the outcome.

The Huskers led 61-59 heading to the fourth quarter and built the lead to 64-59 after a pair of Haiby free throws with 7:09 left. However, at that point, Nebraska had gone six minutes without a field goal.  The score remained 64-59 until Gadiva Hubbard scored Minnesota's first points of the fourth quarter on a three with 6:01 left. It was the first of three threes for Hubbard in the fourth, as she scored 12 of her team-high 18 points in the final period.

Jasmine Powell, who added 15 points and five assists for Minnesota, then scored a minute later to tie the game at 64 with five minutes left. A Hubbard three with 4:07 left gave the Gophers their biggest lead of the game at the time at 67-64, before Whitney Brown finally ended Nebraska's field goal drought at nearly 10-and-a-half minutes on her layup with 2:50 left to cut the margin to 67-66. Hubbard hit 1-of-2 free throws with just over 1:30 left, before Haiby tied the score at 68 with 1:08 remaining.  

The Huskers had plenty of opportunities in the fourth quarter but were unable to cash in, going just 3-for-21 from the field, including 1-for-9 from three-point range in the period. By comparison, Minnesota attempted just 11 shots in the fourth quarter, but hit four. Hubbard kept hitting, connecting on her third and final three of the period with 51 seconds left to put the Golden Gophers up 71-68. Haiby tried to answer with a three of her own at the other end, but it hit back iron and Sara Scalia, who finished with 14 points, seven rebounds and a game-high six assists cleared the rebound. 

Nebraska sent Hubbard to the line with 26.7 seconds left and she hit both free throws to extend the margin to 73-68. The lead grew to six at 74-68, before Haiby's three for NU's final points of the game.

The Huskers finished the game at just 38.5 percent shooting (25-65), including just 8-for-33 in the second half. The Big Red finished at 39.1 percent (9-23) from three. Minnesota was nearly identical from the field overall at 38.7 percent (24-62), but Minnesota's 15-of-32 effort from three-point range was the difference. Over the three previous games for Nebraska, all against ranked opponents, the Huskers held the opposition to a combined 15-for-54 from three-point range. The Gophers sealed the win by going 13-for-16 at the line, including 5-for-7 in the fourth quarter, while NU went 12-for-18 at the stripe. 

Nebraska won the battle of the boards 42-40, but Minnesota outscored the Huskers 14-10 in second-chance points. Both teams committed just seven turnovers in the game.

In an entertaining first half, Nebraska jumped to a 20-10 lead at the end of the first quarter, before Minnesota erupted with 29 second-quarter points. NU dropped to 7-5 overall and 5-4 in the Big Ten, while Minnesota improved to 3-7 and 2-6 in the conference.Ashley Scoggin added a career-high-tying 16 points for the Husker backcourt, including four three-pointers. Scoggin's final three came with 8:48 left in the third quarter after Nebraska opened the game 7-for-13 from long range in the first half. But the Big Red did not knock down another triple until Haiby's second three of the game with 2.7 seconds left. By that point, Minnesota had control of the outcome.The Huskers led 61-59 heading to the fourth quarter and built the lead to 64-59 after a pair of Haiby free throws with 7:09 left. However, at that point, Nebraska had gone six minutes without a field goal. The score remained 64-59 until Gadiva Hubbard scored Minnesota's first points of the fourth quarter on a three with 6:01 left. It was the first of three threes for Hubbard in the fourth, as she scored 12 of her team-high 18 points in the final period.Jasmine Powell, who added 15 points and five assists for Minnesota, then scored a minute later to tie the game at 64 with five minutes left. A Hubbard three with 4:07 left gave the Gophers their biggest lead of the game at the time at 67-64, before Whitney Brown finally ended Nebraska's field goal drought at nearly 10-and-a-half minutes on her layup with 2:50 left to cut the margin to 67-66. Huskers Fall to Gophers

COFFEYVILLE, Kan. (AP) - A Kansas football coach who survived and even resumed coaching following a double-lung transplant three years ago has died of COVID-19 complications.

Aaron Flores, 50, of Coffeyville, died last week following a battle with the virus, the Wichita Eagle&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansas.com/sports/article248594960.html" target="_blank">reported</a>. Flores had been the head football coach of the school's Red Ravens football team until a progressive lung disease required him to undergo the lung transplant in 2018.

Despite the nine-hour operation and three months of rehabilitation, Flores was able to return to the sidelines for the 2019 season. Last year, he transitioned to student affairs director at the school. Family and friends say the transplant allowed him to enjoy life without the oxygen tank, voice amplifier and golf cart he previously had relied on to get through each day.

In December, he and three other members of his immediate family were diagnosed with the virus in mid-December, and Flores was flown to the Omaha, Nebraska, hospital where he had received the transplant to be treated. He died there Friday.

Flores is survived by his wife, Kristen Flores, and their two daughters, 10-year-old Ryann and 9-year-old Haley.

Lincoln – The University of Nebraska men's basketball program will continue to pause team activities for a minimum of seven more days due to additional positive COVID-19 results among its Tier 1 personnel. Tier 1 personnel include student athletes, coaches and any staff member whose job requires close regular contact.

As of testing results through Saturday, Nebraska is in the Red/Red threshold in the Big Ten Conference guidelines for both Team Positivity Rate and Population Positivity Rate. Under those conditions, the team will extend its pause on regular practice and competition for a minimum of seven days.

Currently, a total of 12 individuals in the MBB program, including seven players and Head Coach Fred Hoiberg, are in isolation or quarantine due to positive test results per CDC, Big Ten and Lincoln Lancaster County Health Department guidelines.  Based on testing results through the latest round of testing, at least 30 percent of Tier 1 personnel has been confirmed positive in the last seven days.

Due to the extension of the pause, the Huskers' home game against Minnesota (Jan. 20) and contest at Iowa (Jan. 24) have been postponed. The institutions will work with the Big Ten Conference to identify rescheduling options. At this time, no determination has been made on how the pause may impact scheduled games beyond Jan. 24.

We will also conduct all the necessary procedures included in the Big Ten Conference protocols. Consistent with all of our athletic programs, we report any positive test result to the University, and it is included in its daily reports to the Lancaster County Health Department.
