Lincoln - Senior center Kate Cain nearly unleashed a triple-double while tying her career high with 22 points, and Nebraska got a monumental team defensive effort on its way to a 63-55 women's basketball win over previously unbeaten and No. 15 Ohio State at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Saturday afternoon.

Playing without their second-leading scorer and rebounder Isabelle Bourne who was out with an ankle injury, the Huskers not only got 22 points, 12 rebounds and nine blocked shots from Cain, they also got 11 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds from junior guard Sam Haiby. While Cain produced the most dominant performance at both ends of the court in her Husker career, Haiby controlled the tempo for the Big Red throughout, as Nebraska held the Buckeyes 35 points below their season scoring average. Nebraska improved to 7-4 overall and 5-3 in the Big Ten.

Nebraska nearly led wire-to-wire in knocking off their third top-15 opponent in the last 17 days, including their second win over a previously unbeaten and Associated Press No. 15 Big Ten foe (also Northwestern, Dec. 31). Nebraska put on a defensive clinic in the first half, holding a Buckeye team that entered the contest averaging 90 points per game to just 21 first-half points. Ohio State, which was bolstered by the return of first-team All-Big Ten forward Dorka Juhasz after she missed the past three games, jumped to a quick 4-0 lead, but Nebraska answered with a 7-0 run, including the first two points from Haiby and the last three from Cain to take a 7-4 lead at the first media timeout. From that point, Nebraska never trailed again the rest of the way against the Buckeyes, who slipped to 7-1 overall and 3-1 in the Big Ten.

In addition to the huge games from Cain and Haiby, Nebraska got career highs of 14 points and four three-pointers from freshman walk-on Whitney Brown. The 5-8 guard from Grand Island, Neb., helped a short-handed Husker bench of just true freshmen Brown and Annika Stewart, outscore the Buckeye bench 14-3. Brown's first three-pointer gave the Big Red its biggest lead of the first quarter at 14-8. Her second three pushed NU's lead to 25-19 after the Buckeyes had closed to within a possession. Then fellow freshman Ruby Porter, who made her first career start in place of fellow Australian Bourne, hit a three with 1:06 left in the second quarter to give Nebraska its biggest lead of the half at 30-19.

In the third quarter, Brown buried her third three-pointer to extend Nebraska's lead back to 11 at 45-34, after the Buckeyes had trimmed the margin to five early in the period. Her fourth three came midway through the fourth to push Nebraska's margin to 12 at 55-43. NU's biggest lead of the game came at 52-38 on a Cain bucket with 6:47 left in the contest.

Although Nebraska extended the lead throughout most of the game, the Buckeyes battled in the final three minutes by getting five straight points from Juhasz, who finished with 13 points and 12 rebounds, before a Madison Greene three-pointer capped an 8-0 run over a three-minute span to pull within 57-54. 

But Haiby stepped up with the game's biggest offensive play, a strong drive to the hoop that ended with a layup and a foul. She converted the traditional three-point play to put Nebraska up 60-54 with 44.5 seconds left, and the Huskers held the Buckeyes without a field goal in the game's closing minute.

Nebraska's suffocating defense held Ohio State to just 27.2 percent (22-81) shooting, including 5-of-27 threes. The Buckeyes hit four three-pointers in the fourth quarter after opening the game 1-for-20. Nebraska hit 41.4 percent (24-58) of its shots, including 6-of-22 threes (.273), while going 9-for-14 at the free throw line. Nebraska dominated the glass against the Buckeyes, 54-44, in large part to the efforts of Bella Cravens, who finished with six points and a game-high 14 rebounds. The Buckeyes dominated the turnover department, 19-6, including 13-2 in the second half, but Ohio State was only able to cut one point off Nebraska's halftime lead despite being plus-11 in the turnover department in the final 20 minutes.

The Huskers held a 14-12 edge after the first quarter and built a 30-19 lead with an 8-0 run late in the second quarter. Braxtin Miller hit a short jumper for Ohio State at the buzzer to end a 4:44 scoreless drought and pull the Buckeyes to 30-21 at the half.

Cain led the Big Red with 11 points, five rebounds and two blocks in the first half, while freshman walk-on Whitney Brown added eight points including a pair of three-pointers. Haiby added four points, five rebounds and five assists in the half, while Brown scored eight first-half points and Cravens pitched in two points and six rebounds.

The Huskers held Ohio State to just 24.3 percent (9-37) shooting in the first half, including 1-of-13 from three-point range. Nebraska hit 12-of-31 shots (.387) including 3-of-13 threes. NU also won the first-half rebounding battle 25-22, while OSU won the first-half turnover fight, 6-4.

You no longer have to decide what to do on your Monday nights, at least that's the hope for the North Platte Area Sports Commission.&nbsp; They are working with the Ramada/Sandhills convention center to start a Monday night Cornhole league. The league will start in Feb and will have two skill levels: Advanced and Intermediate if they get enough registrations.&nbsp; All the info can be found below:&nbsp;

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — John Elway’s replacement as Broncos general manager will be Vikings executive George Paton.

Elway announced the hiring Wednesday. Denver hasn’t reached the playoffs since winning Super Bowl 50 five years ago.

Paton spent the last 14 seasons with Minnesota, including the last six as vice president of player personnel and assistant general manager. He’s been one of the hottest names on the GM circuit in recent years.

Elway called Paton “a proven evaluator who knows every detail of leading football operations.”

Paton will report to Elway, who is keeping his role as president of football operations.

Paton was one of five candidates the Broncos interviewed, including Patriots executive Dave Ziegler, who withdrew his name last weekend to stay in New England in an expanded role.

The other candidates to succeed Elway were Saints executive Terry Fontenot, Bears executive Champ Kelly, and in-house candidate Brian Stark, the Broncos’ college scouting director.

Elway announced last week he was moving into more of an overseer role in 2021, with coach Vic Fangio and the new general manager reporting to him.

Paton will be in charge of the draft, free agency and roster, but Elway will have a say in the bigger decisions facing the franchise.

The Broncos search committee consisted of Elway, Fangio, team president Joe Ellis and chief communications officer Patrick Smyth.

The Broncos are coming off an injury-riddled 5-11 season and are mired in a four-year run of losing records, their worst stretch in the Super Bowl era.

Lincoln – The University of Nebraska men's basketball program has paused full team activities due to positive COVID-19 results among its Tier 1 personnel.  Tier 1 personnel include student athletes, coaches and any staff member whose job requires close regular contact.

Due to the pause, the Huskers' home game against Illinois (Wed., Jan. 13) has been postponed. The institutions will work with the Big Ten Conference to identify rescheduling options. At this time, no determination has been made on how the pause may impact scheduled games beyond Jan. 13.

Individuals who have tested positive are in isolation and following all local and Lancaster County health guidelines. We will also conduct all the necessary procedures included in the Big Ten Conference protocols. Consistent with all of our athletic programs, we report any positive test result to the University, and it is included in its daily reports to the Lancaster County Health Department.

Nebraska Men’s Basketball Pauses Team Activities

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska wide receiver Wan'Dale Robinson has announced his plan to transfer, leaving the Cornhuskers without one of their top playmakers in 2021.

Robinson revealed his decision on Twitter on Monday, saying he wants to move closer to his family in Kentucky.

Robinson split time between running back and receiver as a sophomore. He became the primary running back after Dedrick Mills went out because of an injury. Robinson averaged 5.2 yards per carry while rushing for 240 yards and a touchdown.

He led the team with 51 catches for 461 yards and a touchdown.

Robinson was one of the prize recruits for coach Scott Frost in 2019, signing after he de-committed from Kentucky. He was rated a four-star prospect, and he also visited Alabama, Ohio State and Michigan.

Robinson averaged 5.2 yards per carry while rushing for 240 yards and a touchdown.He led the team with 51 catches for 461 yards and a touchdown.Robinson was one of the prize recruits for coach Scott Frost in 2019, signing after he de-committed from Kentucky. He was rated a four-star prospect, and he also visited Alabama, Ohio State and Michigan.

The Football program at North Platte is headed in the right direction and people all around the state of Nebraska are taking notice.&nbsp; This year the team hosted and won their first playoff game since 2004 and were ranked in the top 10 in power points throughout the season.&nbsp; That success is due to players working hard and seeing that hard work pay off:&nbsp;

North Platte High School had 6 football players earn postseason recognition.

These Bulldogs were recognized in the Lincoln Journal Star.

Camron Sutherland, Jaylan Ruffin, Vince Genatone, Caleb Kinkaid, Kolten Tilford.

These same players, as well as Cody Wright, were also recognized as All State HM in the Omaha World Herald.

WARRENSBURG&nbsp; &nbsp;Mo. - The Fort Hays State women's basketball team fell to a sharp-shooting #21 Central Missouri squad Thursday evening (Jan. 7), 79-72. The Tigers (5-2, 5-2 MIAA) led by as many as nine midway through the first quarter, but the Jennies (7-0, 7-0 MIAA) hit nearly 51 percent from the floor and nine 3-pointers to pull away with the win.

After the teams traded buckets early on, Fort Hays State went on an 11-2 run to race in front by nine just five minutes into the game, 15-6.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5847">Jaden Hobbs</a>&nbsp;started the run with a 3-pointer before&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5854">Olivia Hollenbeck</a>&nbsp;followed with a traditional three-point play on the following possession.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5853">Sydney Golladay</a>&nbsp;knocked down a shot from behind the arc one minute later before&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5850">Whitney Randall</a>&nbsp;capped off the run with a layup. The Jennies kept things rolling in the third quarter, again hitting 50 percent from behind the arc (4-of-8). Fort Hays State trailed by as many as 13, 52-39, after UCM opened the second half on a 10-2 run. The Tigers were held at bay for the rest of the third quarter, trailing by 11 at the end of the frame, 64-53. Three-pointers from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5851">Lauryn Reither</a>&nbsp;and Hobbs helped the Tigers close within two possessions with five minutes left in the game, 71-65, but UCM freshman Olivia Nelson responded with back-to-back buckets to push the lead back to nine. 🏀 Tiger women fall to hot-shooting Jennies

The Nebraska Coaches Association annual volleyball all-star game will take place in Lincoln on July 27th and the NPHS Bulldogs will be represented by one of the best players to come through the school.&nbsp; Peyton Neff will represent North Platte as their lone all-star from a season that saw the Bulldogs make their first State Tournament appearance since 2015.&nbsp;

Neff had 806 assists for the Bulldogs in her senior year as a&nbsp; setter. Neff leaves the program as the leader in career assists.&nbsp;

NPHS Volleyball: Neff recognized by NCA as All-Star

The Nebraska Coaches Association All-Star Softball game will take place in Lincon on July 28th and two North Platte High School players will take the field after an amazing season.&nbsp;

Congratulations to Tahjzha Botts and Ellie Hanson for making the squad.&nbsp; Botts was a transfer from Maxwell for her senior season and spent the majority of the year behind the plate as the team's catcher. Botts was a big part of the offense during the year knocking in 13 home runs.

Hanson has been a stalwart member of the Bulldogs for many years. Hanson was among the team leaders in batting avg this season knocking an impressive .433 while scoring 35 runs and hitting in 45 more.&nbsp;

NPHS Softball: Two players snag NCA All-star Slots

The Nebraska volleyball team was ranked No. 5 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association preseason poll released on Tuesday. 

The Huskers finished the 2019 season with a 28-5 record and reached an NCAA regional final. NU was ranked fifth in the final poll of 2019 and returns all six starters and libero. 

Wisconsin will open the season as the preseason No. 1-ranked team. Texas, Stanford and Kentucky followed the Badgers in the top five. 

The Huskers will open the 2020-21 season with a two-match series at Indiana on January 22-23. Nebraska's 22-match Big Ten-only schedule features eight matches against teams ranked in the top 25 and six ranked in the top 10.

DENVER (AP) — John Elway announced a major change in the Denver Broncos’ football operations Monday, saying he’ll hire a general manager who will report to him but have final say on the draft, free agency and the roster.

Elway, who has been GM since 2011, will remain as president of football operations in 2021, the final year of his contract.

“Working in this role for the last 10 years and going back to my playing days, I’ve always tried to do everything I can to help the Broncos win and get better,” Elway said in a statement. “As part of a transition I’ve thought about for a long time, I have made the decision to step up into an elevated role and hire a general manager to lead our personnel and football staff.”

Elway engineered a dramatic turnaround of the franchise when he returned to his beloved Broncos a decade ago, building a team that reached the playoffs in each of his first five seasons and added a third Lombardi Trophy to go with the two he won in Denver during his Hall of Fame playing career.

Elway moved on from Tim Tebow after one season, luring Peyton Manning to Denver in 2012 for the second chapter of his storied career after the Colts cut their star quarterback following a series of neck fusion surgeries.

Manning led the Broncos to a 55-17 mark over his four seasons, which included two trips to the Super Bowl, a loss to Seattle in Super Bowl 48 and a win over Carolina in Super Bowl 50.

Manning retired a month later and the Broncos haven’t been the same since.

Since piling onto fire trucks and parading the Lombardi Trophy through downtown Denver on Feb. 9, 2016, the Broncos have won just 32 of 80 games, posted four consecutive losing seasons for the first time in half a century and have churned through 10 starting quarterbacks (including a practice squad receiver in 2020), five offensive coordinators and three head coaches.

Head coach Vic Fangio is 12-20, just one game better than the 11-21 mark that got his predecessor, Vance Joseph, fired.

But Fangio is returning in 2021, and Elway said Fangio will have a say in who’s hired as GM, as will team president Joe Ellis.

Elway said the new GM will be “empowered to make all football decisions, working in partnership with Vic.”

“John Elway is the most important and impactful person in the history of the Denver Broncos. I have nothing but gratitude for how he accepted this challenge 10 years ago and helped us accomplish great things as an organization,” Ellis said in a statement.

Ellis, who, like Elway, contracted the coronavirus in the fall, said that in recent weeks he and Elway huddled for “very positive and honest conversations” about improving the team and about Elway’s future.

“John arrived at this decision, and I am fully supportive of him and this new structure,” Ellis added. “With all of his experience and competitive fire, I know John will be a tremendous resource for the Broncos in this role.”

Elway said he “will be there to support our GM and Vic, providing my perspective, helping with the big decisions and being a sounding board whenever needed. With all that goes into the day-to-day responsibilities of a GM and how the job has grown, this structure will set us up for success and allow me to focus on the big picture.”

“This is a great place with all the resources to win. We have a lot of good people on the football side, and I’ll be there for them in any way possible.”
