NPHS Wrestling: NPHS takes top spot at own tournament

Before the winter season got started the NSAA said they would constantly be monitoring the COVID-19 pandemic and would be adjusting their guidelines as needed taking into account a number of factors.&nbsp; After a successful start to the winter sports season the NSAA put out a new set of guidelines to start January 4th. You can find those below.&nbsp;

The Big Ten Conference had an astonishing nine of its teams ranked in the Top 25 in the latest poll Monday.

Naturally, the best ranked of them would immediately lose to an unranked opponent.

Maryland’s victory over sixth-ranked Wisconsin on Monday night — along with No. 21 Minnesota’s rout of No. 17 Michigan State — sets the stage for what could be an epic start to the new year in the improbably deep Big Ten.

Tenth-ranked Iowa, fresh off its overtime loss to the Golden Gophers, takes on No. 19 Northwestern on Tuesday night while No. 14 Purdue hosts Rutgers. Nebraska heads to No. 25 Ohio State on Wednesday, and Minnesota faces the Badgers and No. 16 Michigan tries to remain unbeaten against the Terps on New Year’s Eve.

The Hawkeyes continue their brutal schedule at Rutgers on Saturday, when Purdue heads to No. 15 Illinois and Michigan State visits the Cornhuskers. The weekend wraps up Sunday with Wisconsin visiting Penn State, Northwestern heading to Michigan and Ohio State traveling to Minnesota in a pair of matchups involving ranked teams.

Get ready for a wild start to 2021 in the Big Ten.

After blowing out then-No. 16 Virginia, giving the Bulldogs a record four wins against Top 25 teams in the first seven games of a season, coach Mark Few’s team finally gets a breather this week. Gonzaga ran roughshod over Northern Arizona on Monday night in the makeup of a game canceled earlier in December due to COVID-19, then turns around to face Dixie State on Tuesday night. The Bulldogs’ breezy week concludes Saturday against San Francisco.

“They’re the best we’ve played so far,” Cavaliers coach Tony Bennett said, “and appear to be well-deserving of that ranking.”

Two teams that have navigated their first six games without a loss meet Wednesday night when seventh-ranked Tennessee visits No. 12 Missouri in the Southeastern Conference opener for both teams.

On Saturday, the Atlantic Coast Conference takes center stage. No. 18 Florida State plays No. 20 Duke in only the third game for the Blue Devils since Dec. 4, and No. 23 Virginia plays No. 24 Virginia Tech in a showdown of schools separated by about 150 miles of Interstate 81. The Hokies already have wins over teams that were ranked in Villanova and Clemson.

The Big Ten has the most teams in the Top 25 but the Big 12 may have the best — the league has five teams ranked in the top 13. And two of the best meet at Allen Fieldhouse on Saturday when No. 8 Texas visits third-ranked Kansas.

Second-ranked Baylor added a late tune-up against Central Arkansas on Tuesday night before traveling to Iowa State on Saturday. No. 9 West Virginia heads to Oklahoma and Oklahoma State visits No. 13 Texas Tech the same afternoon.

Fifth-ranked Houston has navigated a schedule marked by a showdown with the Red Raiders and three postponements due to COVID-19 without a loss. The Cougars should be heavy favorites against Tulsa on Tuesday night before a marque game in the American Athletic Conference against unbeaten SMU on Sunday.

No. 11 Creighton plays its first game since beating then-No. 22 Xavier on Dec. 3 when it visits Providence on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Villanova wishes it could play anybody right now. The fourth-ranked Wildcats paused their season Sunday when coach Jay Wright tested positive for COVID-19. Their game against the Musketeers on Saturday has been postponed but no decision has been made for the next three Big East games against DePaul, Marquette and Connecticut.

“Our players have been very diligent and disciplined with all of the COVID protocols,” Wright said in a statement issued by the school. “Unfortunately, we have had two staff members test positive. I am one of them. My symptoms are mild, and we remain connected as a team and staff by phone and Zoom.”

LINCOLN, Neb. — Catching fish through the ice can be a fun way to spend a winter day. Winter days are shorter, so any time spent outdoors is a bonus. But with ice-fishing, safety always should come first.

It always starts with ice thickness. When is the ice thick enough to go out for some ice-fishing? It depends.

One thing is certain: It’s more fun when fishing with a friend. From a safety standpoint, it’s especially smart when ice-fishing.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission has some tips for a safe ice-fishing outing on the lake.

• A minimum of 3 inches of clear, blue lake ice will support a single angler; 5 inches will hold several anglers in single file.

• Slush ice is about half as strong as clear lake ice, so anglers should double the minimum thickness figures when encountering such conditions. Ice weakens with age, and late in the season, when it becomes dark and honeycombed, it is time to quit fishing for the season.

• Be especially careful on any lake that has moving water in it. Water movement hinders freezing, often leaving hard-to-detect thin spots.

• Materials imbedded in the ice, such as weeds or logs weaken ice. Large objects on the ice, such as duck blinds or ice shacks, can absorb the sun's heat and weaken ice. Ice near shore may be weakened by heat from the ground.

• Use an ice chisel or spud bar to strike the ice and evaluate conditions as you venture out.

• Wear ice picks around your neck in case the worst happens and you need something to grip the ice to pull yourself out of the water.

• Wear ice cleats on your boots for traction.

• Have a long throw rope with you in case of emergency.

Drowning is one immediate danger from falling through the ice, but hypothermia, a rapid, drastic lowering of body temperature that causes loss of the use of limbs, disorientation, unconsciousness, and heart failure, is the real threat.

Dress warm, be safe and have fun on the ice this winter.

Ice-fishing safety always begins with ice thickness

LINCOLN, Neb. – Applications for multispecies Super Tag and Combo lottery permits will be accepted by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission beginning Jan. 2, 2021.

The Super Tag lottery permit will be valid for one elk of either sex, one antelope of either sex, one deer of either sex and two turkeys (only toms and bearded hens may be taken in the spring). One permit will be authorized for residents only, and one permit will be authorized for residents/nonresidents. Persons may apply for the residents-only permit once per year for $25. Persons may apply for the resident/nonresident permit multiple times per year for $10 per application.

The Combo permit will be valid for one antelope of either sex, one deer of either sex and two turkeys (only toms and bearded hens may be taken in the spring). One permit will be authorized for residents only, and one permit will be authorized for nonresidents only. Qualifying persons may apply multiple times per year for $10 per application.

These multispecies lottery permits will be valid in 2021 and 2022 in open seasons with the appropriate weapons. Winners of these permits will require a Habitat Stamp.

Applications will be received beginning at 1 p.m. Central time on Jan. 2. They must be received by Game and Parks by 5 p.m. (11:59 p.m. if applying online) on July 2. The Lincoln Journal Star has put out its annual Super state and All state player lists for the 2020 football season.

This season the Bulldogs went 6-4 while earning the first playoff win since 2004. Multiple times over the season the Bulldogs were among the top 10 ranked teams according to the Journal Star and the Omaha World Herald along with sitting atop the power points for much of the year.&nbsp;

This year six Bulldogs caught the eye of the urban area newspaper.&nbsp; Earning All state honorable mentions were:&nbsp; Camron Sutherland Vince Genatone Jaylan Ruffin Caleb Kinkaid Kolten Tilford

NPHS Football: Super state and All state honors given to six NPHS players

It's been a strange College Football season to say the least. Conferences were playing, then they were not, oh but then they were again. Teams having to take extended breaks midseason for COVID outbreaks.&nbsp; But they made it through and now bowl season is upon us. Well, not all of us.&nbsp; Nebraska, Michigan State and Minnesota have all declined Bowl invites this season, even after the committee waived its "6 wins needed" rule for this season.&nbsp;

"Our players made great sacrifices this fall to allow us to play eight games and practice without disruption throughout the season," said Nebraska head coach Scott Frost in a statement. "As their head coach I am proud of how they continued to fight and finished the season with a win on Friday. This year has been a long grind and it is time for our guys to have a break, and the opportunity to spend Christmas and the holiday season with their family and friends. We will turn our focus to the 2021 season, and we look forward to our players returning to campus for the spring semester in January."

Nebraska was one of the teams across the nation that always hoped they could play, because of that they kept their players on campus even when campuses all over the country were shutting down.&nbsp; Nebraska pushed hard to have a season and was rewarded for their efforts when the Big10 reversed its decision and let the teams play.&nbsp;

"We have decided as a program that the best decision for our team is to prepare for the 2021 season, I'm proud of the players for the way they handled themselves during this difficult and challenging year. They endured a season unlike any we have had before and worked hard to remain diligent in following all of our safety protocols. Our players have been on campus since re-arriving in June and deserve the chance to go home and take some time away from football."

Those were from Michigan State Head Coach Mel Tucker.

Michigan State finished the season 2-5. Their only wins coming against Michigan and Northwestern.&nbsp;

Right now, our focus is strictly on their well-being off the field, and we look forward to them being able to responsibly spend some of the remaining holiday season with family and loved ones. We will return our attention to football when everyone is back on campus in mid-January."

Minnesota finishes 3-3 on the season with 2 games cancelled due to a COVID outbreak.&nbsp;

It's been a strange College Football season to say the least. Conferences were playing, then they were not, oh but then they were again. Teams having to take extended breaks midseason for COVID outbreaks.&nbsp; But they made it through and now bowl season is upon us. Well, not all of us.&nbsp; Nebraska, Michigan State and Minnesota have all declined Bowl invites this season, even after the committee waived its "6 wins needed" rule for this season.&nbsp;"Our players made great sacrifices this fall to allow us to play eight games and practice without disruption throughout the season," said Nebraska head coach Scott Frost in a statement. "As their head coach I am proud of how they continued to fight and finished the season with a win on Friday. This year has been a long grind and it is time for our guys to have a break, and the opportunity to spend Christmas and the holiday season with their family and friends. We will turn our focus to the 2021 season, and we look forward to our players returning to campus for the spring semester in January."Nebraska was one of the teams across the nation that always hoped they could play, because of that they kept their players on campus even when campuses all over the country were shutting down.&nbsp; Nebraska pushed hard to have a season and was rewarded for their efforts when the Big10 reversed its decision and let the teams play.&nbsp;"We have decided as a program that the best decision for our team is to prepare for the 2021 season, I'm proud of the players for the way they handled themselves during this difficult and challenging year. They endured a season unlike any we have had before and worked hard to remain diligent in following all of our safety protocols. The Nebraska football program announced the addition of 31 players Wednesday on the first day recruits were allowed to sign National Letters of Intent during the early signing period. The Huskers signed 19 scholarship players in the early signing period and also announced 12 walk-ons who have been admitted to UNL and paid their enrollment deposit. Nebraska's 19 scholarship players come to Lincoln from 10 states. For the second time in three years, the Huskers signed five in-state prospects, while Georgia (3), Iowa (3) and Texas (2) were the other three states with multiple players who signed with Nebraska. The Huskers' announced walk-on class include 10 Nebraskans and a pair of Iowa natives. Fourteen of Nebraska's 18 high school scholarship recruits were considered for prep All-America honors by Sports Illustrated. LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska linebacker Collin Miller has announced his retirement from football after a spinal injury ended his season last month.

Miller said Tuesday a neurologist who works with the Cornhuskers recommended he give up the game as a precaution.

The senior from Fishers, Indiana, appeared in 40 games, starting his final 16. He made 27 tackles in four games this season.

Miller suffered a spinal concussion, which is characterized by a temporary sensory impairment and motor weakness, in the Nov. 21 game against Illinois. The condition typically resolves in one to three days with no lasting effects, according to the Neural Regeneration Research journal.

He was hurt while making a tackle, was taken off the field on a stretcher and hospitalized overnight. He attended practice two days later to watch and visit with teammates.

"I talked to one neurologist doctor who is with the staff and he kind of gave me the options and put everything out on the line that he thinks it's probably not the best situation to come back and play football," Miller said. "We have great staff on this team that wants the best for me and my family and future."

NPHS Wrestling: NPHS vs GISH Dual postponed

Last week the Governor updated his Directed Health Measures for the state by moving Nebraska back down into the yellow. Many hoped this would signal a change in the guidelines for the NSAA.&nbsp; The NSAA however wants to keep playing it safe, at least until the holiday season is over.&nbsp;

In a statement by Executive Director Jay Bellar, he explains the decision:&nbsp;

To continue to support our NSAA member schools and their efforts to keep kids in school and participating in NSAA activities, the NSAA has decided to stay with the Governor’s “Orange Phase” of the Directed Health Measure regarding fan attendance and 6-foot separation between households. Additionally, schools may allow grandparents to attend contests. Spectators, coaches, and non-active participants are required to wear face coverings at all times while attending these events.

Non-compliance with the above may include but not be limited to reprimands, fines or exclusion from the post season.

This decision is based on an abundance of caution as we move through the holiday season. By doing these things now, we are hopeful we can host NSAA winter championships in February and March.

This is in effect until January 4, 2021.

Last week the Governor updated his Directed Health Measures for the state by moving Nebraska back down into the yellow. NSAA updates winter guidelines

Kylie Licking signed her Letter of Intent Friday to play outside hitter for the Knights. Licking played her high school career with Mullen High School in Mullen, NE.

Licking finished second for the Broncos with 133 total kills to go along with a 0.146 hitting percentage. She also led Mullen with 52 serving aces and 378 total digs.

“We are excited to add Kylie to our roster,” said NPCC coach Alexa McCall. “She is a solid player in all six rotations and what we look for in an outside hitter. Kylie comes from a solid high school program that has been very successful the last couple of years. She is a great kid and will fit in to the Knight family.”

Licking has attended the Knight’s summer youth camps since a young age and joins her cousin, Alysen Daniels, on the team. She finished her high school career by helping to lead Mullen to a state tournament appearance.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — Illinois fired coach Lovie Smith on Sunday with a game left in its ninth consecutive losing season.

Smith became Illinois’ first Black head football coach when he was hired by athletic director Josh Whitman in March 2016. The longtime NFL coach went 17-39 in five seasons at the school.

Smith’s original deal was for six years and $21 million, but he received a two-year extension through 2023 after Illinois went 4-8 in his third season.

“When we brought Lovie on board, we had a lot of needs; we needed a steady hand, an experienced voice, someone who would bring credibility to the program,” Whitman said during a Zoom press conference.

“At the end of the day, we weren’t able to win enough games or quite get over the hump despite the best efforts.”

The Illini made one postseason appearance under Smith, losing 35-20 to California in the Redbox Bowl in 2019. They were 6-4 last season after a thrilling comeback victory at Michigan State, but then dropped their last three games.

The slide continued into this year, with Illinois losing its first three by a combined 117-45 score. The Illini are 2-5 after they were pushed around in a 28-10 loss at Northwestern on Saturday, allowing 411 yards rushing in their sixth straight loss in the series against the in-state Wildcats.

The Illini close out the season at Penn State on Saturday. Offensive coordinator Rod Smith was elevated to acting head coach.

“This Illinois football program is primed for success,” Whitman said.

“I want to win. I want somebody who is going to come in here and win football games, do it with integrity and for a long time.”

While the 62-year-old Smith flopped with the Illini, he could attract some interest from NFL teams looking for help on the defensive side of the ball.

Smith spent nine seasons as the head coach of the Chicago Bears, leading them to three NFC North titles, a Super Bowl appearance and an 81-63 record. He also went 8-24 in two seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before he was hired by Illinois.

He coached linebackers for the Bucs from 1996-2000 and served as the Rams’ defensive coordinator from 2001-03.

Illinois fires coach Lovie Smith after 5 seasons

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland Indians are changing their name after 105 years.

Citing three people familiar with the decision, The New York Times reported Sunday night that the team is moving away from a name considered racist for decades. The Indians have been internally discussing a potential name change for months.

A team spokesman told The Associated Press the franchise has no immediate comment on the report.

The Times said the team could make a formal announcement later this week. It’s not known when the name change will take effect or if the team has settled on a new moniker.

Cleveland’s move away from Indians follows a similar decision earlier this year by the NFL’s Washington Football Team, which was previously known as the Redskins.

For years, Native American groups and others have protested against Cleveland’s use of Indians as its name as well as other imagery used by the American League charter franchise founded in 1901. Last year, the team removed the contentious Chief Wahoo logo from its caps and jerseys, but the smiling, cartoonish mascot has remained popular and merchandise is still sold bearing its image.

The Indians have dealt with a backlash from fans upset over Chief Wahoo’s removal and the club is certain to hear more with the decision to change its name.

“Oh no! What is going on?” President Donald Trump tweeted. “This is not good news, even for ”Indians”. Cancel culture at work!”

In July, just hours after Washington’s plans became known after being pressured by several sponsors, including FedEx which holds naming rights to the football’s team’s stadium, Cleveland owner Paul Dolan released a statement saying the team would review “the best path forward with our team name.”

In the months since, the team has consulted players, front office members, coaching staff, community leaders, share holders and Native American groups.

A few days after Dolan’s statement, Indians manager Terry Francona said it was time to “move forward” with the name change.

“I’ve been thinking about it and been thinking about it before we put out that statement,” said Francona, who has been with the club since 2013. “I know in the past, when I’ve been asked about, whether it’s our name or the Chief Wahoo, I think I would usually answer and say I know that we’re never trying to be disrespectful.

“And I still feel that way. But I don’t think that’s a good enough answer today. I think it’s time to move forward. It’s a very difficult subject. It’s also delicate.”
