Alabama was No. 1 in the first College Football Playoff rankings of the season Tuesday night, followed by Notre Dame, Clemson and Ohio State.

Texas A&amp;M was fifth and Florida sixth, giving the Southeastern Conference three of the top six teams. Alabama is No. 1 in the CFP rankings for a record 19th time.

Unbeaten Cincinnati from the American Athletic Conference at seventh has the best ranking for a non-Power Five team in the seven-year history of the selection committee’s top 25.

No. 8 Northwestern, Georgia and Miami rounded out the top 10.

Another unbeaten team from outside the Power Five was not so highly regarded by the committee. BYU was slotted 14th, behind No. 11 Oklahoma (6-2) and No. 13 Iowa State (6-2), among others. The Cougars were No. 8 in the latest AP Top 25.

The highest-ranked Pac-12 team was Oregon at 15th. Southern California was 18th.

Much like this entire college football season played in a pandemic, the rankings schedule has been delayed and truncated this year.

The 13-person selection committee usually starts ranking teams around Halloween and produces six rankings before the final ones that determine which 12 teams will play in the semifinals and major bowl games.

This is the first of four reveals leading up to the only ones that really count, scheduled to be released on Dec. 20.

The coronavirus pandemic didn’t stop the selection committee from meeting in person as usual at the Gaylord Hotel in Grapevine, Texas, just outside Dallas. And the playoff itself is scheduled to go off as scheduled with the semifinals on Jan. 1 in the Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl, and the championship game Jan. 11 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.

Because of the strange season, these initial committee rankings had more intrigue than normal and several questions to answer.

“We embraced the chaos,” committee chairman Gary Barta, who is Iowa’s athletic director, told ESPN.

Q: How did the committee treat the non-Power Five unbeatens?

Cincinnati (8-0) should be thrilled. BYU (9-0), not so much. Even though the Cougars lead the FBS in scoring margin at 33 points per game.

Barta said the Cougars’ schedule, which had to be rebuilt because Power Five conferences mostly decided to play only league games due to the pandemic, wasn’t tough enough to warrant a better ranking.

“Right now BYU’s best win is over Boise State, and in that game I think (the Broncos) got down to their third-string quarterback,” Barta said.

No non-Power Five team had ever ranked better than 12th in the first rankings. The best ranking in any selection committee top 25 by a team from outside the Power Five had been No. 8 for unbeaten UCF in the final 2018 rankings.

At worst, Cincinnati is lined up nicely to win out and grab the spot guaranteed to the top Group of Five conference champion in the New Year’s six bowls.

The contenders for that spot if Cincinnati collapses down the stretch are Coastal Carolina from the Sun Belt at 20, Marshall from Conference USA at 21 and the Bearcats’ AAC rival Tulsa at 25.

BYU is not only outside the realistic playoff race, but the Cougars would still need to rise a few spots to have a shot at getting an at-large invite to one of the lucrative New Year’s Six games.

“Great motivation for our guys,” BYU coach Kalani Sitake said on ESPN while mostly taking the high road about the rankings.

A bid to the Fiesta, Cotton or Peach bowls would be worth $4 million to the independent Cougars, who are not eligible for the spot reserved for the Group of Five.

BYU has only a game against San Diego State on Dec. 12 left on its schedule, but is looking to add opponents. There were some discussions in the last few days with Washington, which had its game this weekend against Washington State called off, but it didn’t work.

“We’re not afraid of anybody,” Sitake said.

Well, how about Cincinnati? The Cougars and Bearcats are both off Dec. 5.

It always comes down to risk/reward. The Cougars could certainly use a boost. The Bearcats still have Temple this week and likely two games with Tulsa.

Would that be enough for the Bearcats to move into playoff position if some of the teams in front of them are cleared out? BYU would definitely give that resume a lift.

Q: How much emphasis was put on number data points aka games played?

Some, clearly by looking at unbeaten Ohio State (4-0) sitting behind Clemson (7-1) and the Pac-12 teams being way back. But then again, Wisconsin (2-1) at 16th suggests maybe not enough.

The Hastings College Broncos have decided to move on from longtime head football coach Tony Harper.&nbsp; Harper has been at the helm of the program for the previous ten years, coaching 102 football games (44-58 overall). Harper was on staff for five years previous acting as defensive coordinator. Before that, he was head coach for Dakota Wesleyan.&nbsp;

The college said they would be moving forward quickly in the process to find a new head coach.

"Coach Harper's leadership taught many about passion, commitment, discipline and a positive professional attitude," said Athletic Director B.J. Pumroy. 

"Ultimately, this decision comes down to success on the field. Hastings College is proud of our Bronco football program, but the team is not achieving the level of success on the field that is expected given the resources available. I greatly appreciate the efforts coach Harper made as a leader for the Broncos, and we wish him nothing but success in his future endeavors."

There is no minimum game requirement to be eligible for the College Football Playoff. The selection committee`s job is to select the top four teams beginning November 24 and continuing through the final rankings December 20. The number of games and wins by each team is certainly important in weighing its ranking, but it is not the only factor.

How will the selection committee factor in conference-only schedules? How will you decide between top teams without inter-conference head-to-head competition or shared opponents?

The protocol for ranking the teams has not changed. The selection committee will continue to watch games, assess every team, and use the available data. A lot of football has been played and remains to be played, even with mostly conference-only schedules. The selection committee will continue to use factors such as wins against top 25 teams, wins against teams with winning records, and their expertise to come together and select the best four teams week by week.

Will one conference have more margin of error than another? Will you weigh PAC-12 losses more than SEC losses? How will you decide between a 7-1 team and a 3-0 team?

The committee ranks teams, not conferences. The more games played, the more chances a team has to prove itself to the committee. If the committee feels the 7-1 team has more quality wins despite one loss, it will factor that into its rankings. If it feels the 3-0 team's undefeated start is more impressive, it will factor that into its rankings. The protocol and the 13 members will continue to assess the teams and use what they have seen on the field week after week to rank the top twenty-five teams.

How will the committee handle COVID cancellations or losses/wins with key players unavailable due to COVID?

We are not involved in protocols that decide which teams need to cancel games or have their players isolate or quarantine. We will handle the player-availability issue the same way we have done in the past. If a key player misses a game, the committee will know and consider whether the absence affects the on-field performance. COVID cancellations will happen, and the committee will continue to make decisions based on the games played each week.

Will you expand the playoff this year due to all the uncertainties?

The CFP management committee considered expanding the College Football Playoff this year and decided against it. The year 2020 has been one of uncertainty and change, but we are not changing the playoff format.

Alabama is now a unanimous No. 1 in&nbsp;The Associated Press college football poll, and Northwestern moved up to No. 11 on Sunday for its best ranking in 24 years.

For the second straight week, the top eight teams in the poll held their spots. The Crimson Tide received all 62 first-place votes after beating Kentucky 63-3, making Alabama the first unanimous No. 1 this season and the first team to do it in the regular season since 2018.

Notre Dame was No. 2, followed by Ohio State, Clemson and Texas A&amp;M. Florida was No. 6, and No. 7 Cincinnati and No. 8 BYU also held their spots.

The rest of the top 10 was No. 9 Oregon and Miami.

Northwestern moved up eight spots after beating Wisconsin 17-7 to improve to 5-0. The Badgers slipped eight spots to 18th.

The Wildcats were last ranked this highly in 1996. The year after their surprising run to the Rose Bowl, coach Gary Barnett’s team reached a high of No. 10.

No. 12 Indiana dropped three spots after putting a scare into Ohio State in the Big Ten’s other top-25 matchup Saturday. The Buckeyes beat the Hoosiers 42-35 after leading 35-7.

This is the 80th time in the history of the AP poll, which dates back to 1936, there has been a unanimous No. 1.

It was a rare occurrence in the early days of the poll, when college football was more regional. From 1936-66, only twice was there a unanimous No. 1.

Southern California was a unanimous No. 1 twice during the 1967 season, but not until the 1990s did the unanimous No. 1 become a common occurrence.

From 1992, when Alabama finished the season by getting all the first-place votes in the poll, to last season when LSU did the same, the AP Top 25 had a unanimous No. 1 on 67 occasions.

The unanimous No. 1 for Alabama is its 22nd overall, most of any school, and its 21st since 2012.

Four ranked teams lost Saturday, but three of those defeats came against other ranked teams. Because of that, just one team fell out of the rankings.

Liberty took its first loss of the season, falling 15-14 at North Carolina State, and is no longer ranked.

Replacing the Flames was North Carolina, which moved back into the rankings at No. 25.

No. 22 Auburn at No. 1 Alabama. The 24th Iron Bowl that will match ranked teams.

No. 2 Notre Dame at No. 25 North Carolina. The Tar Heels have almost no chance to win the ACC with two losses already, but they’ll have a say on who does with this game and Miami still to come.

No. 15 Iowa State at No. 20 Texas. Cyclones can clinch a spot in the Big 12 championship game, but the Longhorns would be in prime position with a victory.

Despite the 41-23 loss to Illinois on Saturday at Memorial Stadium, Husker fans found themselves wondering about Senior Linebacker Collin Miller who was taken of the field on a stretcher in the 4th Quarter.

The University of Nebraska provided the following update on Miller's status:

"Collin Miller was transported to Bryan LGH West Hospital for precautionary reasons. Miller has movement in all of his extremities, and the results of all diagnostic imaging and testing on Miller were normal. He will stay overnight at the hospital for observation and at this point, the prognosis looks promising."

The Huskers travel to face the Iowa Hawkeyes on Friday.

Huskers provide update on injured linebacker Collin Miller

The Big Ten’s four unbeaten teams square off Saturday in two games that could go a long way toward settling the division races.

No. 9 Indiana faces No. 3 Ohio State in a top-10 matchup featuring the conference’s overwhelming favorite against its best early season story.

The Hoosiers have already snapped a 24-game losing streak against Michigan. They’ll look to break a 25-game skid against the Buckeyes.

Over in the Big Ten West, it’s No. 10 Wisconsin at No. 19 Northwestern in a matchup of the conference’s two best defenses.

The Badgers have only played twice after a COVID-19 outbreak shut them down for two weeks. The Wildcats are looking to go 5-0 in the Big Ten for the first time since 1996.

Several other key conference games highlight this weekend’s schedule.

The Bedlam series is historically lopsided with the Sooners leading 81-18-7, and not much better than that recently.

Under coach Mike Gundy, the Cowboys have been more competitive with the Sooners, yet have only won two of 15 meetings.

Nine of those 15 games have come with both teams ranked, and only four times during that span have the Cowboys been the higher ranked team entering the game.

One of Gundy’s two victories against the Sooners came when he had the higher ranked team and another came when Oklahoma State was unranked.

The Sooners enter on a four-game winning streak, having scored 62 points in each of their last two games — albeit against Texas Tech and Kansas.

If Oklahoma State can ride its stingy defense to a victory, it will be in a strong position to reach the Big 12 title game. If the Sooners win, the Big 12 race will be bedlam.

Lawrence hasn’t played in a while. He missed two games after testing positive for COVID-19, including the Notre Dame game, and then Clemson had a week off before playing at Florida State on Saturday.

The Seminoles have hit rock bottom so this isn’t really the type of game that will swing the Heisman race, but just having Lawrence back in the mix seems significant. The ’Noles are definitely a stat-padding opponent at this point.

3-0 — No. 20 Southern California will try to start 3-0 in the Pac-12 for the first time since 2006 when the Trojans visit Utah. USC has lost three straight in Salt Lake City.

19 — Straight victories for Appalachian State against Sun Belt teams not named Georgia Southern. The Mountaineers have mostly rolled through their conference other than their old FCS rivals from Statesboro, Georgia. App State faces No. 15 Coastal Carolina in a key game in the Sun Belt East.

28 — Touchdown passes for Florida quarterback Kyle Trask, an SEC record through six games. The Gators face Vanderbilt on Saturday.

54 — Points scored by Mississippi State in five games since scoring 44 in a season-opening victory against LSU. The Bulldogs visit No. 13 Georgia on Saturday. Georgia has the top defense in the SEC at 5.03 yards per play allowed.

619.1 — Yards per game for UCF’s offense, tops in the nation and about 6 yards behind the FBS record for a season set by Houston in 1989. The Knights host No. 7 Cincinnati on Saturday. The Bearcats’ defense allows only 300 yards per game.

Any matchup of triple-option teams is worth a look. The Eagles and Black Knights average a combined 578 yards rushing per game. And the way the clock rolls for these grounded offenses, it shouldn’t take more than three hours for them to get the game in.

The Wolverines are 1-3, having lost three straight. Things look very bad in Ann Arbor. Now, take a moment and think about how much worse it would be if Michigan can’t beat Rutgers?

Week 12: Big Ten unbeatens, Bedlam and Lawrence returns

Lincoln – Two games in the Golden Window Classic along with matchups against Creighton and Georgia Tech highlight Nebraska's revised non-conference men's basketball schedule announced Thursday.

The seven-game slate features a number of changes from the original schedule released back in June, including the move of the annual Nebraska-Creighton game to Omaha on Friday, Dec. 11. 

The Huskers will now open the 2020-21 season on Wednesday, Nov. 25, by hosting McNeese State at Pinnacle Bank Arena. Tipoff is set for 11 a.m. and will be televised on BTN. The Cowboys return a pair of preseason all-conference performers, including Scottsbluff native Dru Kuxhausen, who averaged 14.7 points per game and led the nation in 3-pointers in 2019-20 (125) while ranking in the top three nationally in 3-pointers per game (3.9, second) and 3-point percentage (.458, third). Senior A.J. Lawson is also a preseason All-Southland pick after averaging 15.2 points and 4.2 assists per game. The season opener will be the first meeting between the two programs.

The Huskers will play two games in the Golden Window Classic, a multi-team event at Pinnacle Bank Arena from Nov. 25-28. The Huskers will play Saint Louis on Thursday, Nov. 26 (1 p.m., BTN), and take on San Francisco on Saturday, Nov. 28 (TBA, BTN or BTN+)

The Huskers will open the month of December by hosting a South Dakota team that went 20-12, including a 10-6 mark in the Summit League on Dec. 1. Stanley Umude is a preseason all-conference pick after averaging 16.7 points, 6.3 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game last season.  Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. on BTN.

The Huskers will host Florida A&amp;M on Dec. 6, as the Rattlers make their first-ever appearance at Pinnacle Bank Arena. FAMU returns three starters from a team that went 12-15 last season, including a 70-68 win over Iowa State in Ames.  Florida A&amp;M, which is picked third in the MEAC South Division, is led by junior guard MJ Randolph, who averaged 13.0 points, 5.8 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game in 2019-20. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. on BTN.

After hosting Georgia Tech in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Dec. 9, the Huskers will make the short trip to Omaha to close non-conference action with the annual matchup with Creighton on Friday, Dec. 11. The Bluejays, who are ranked 11th in the preseason AP poll released earlier this month, return four starters and six of their top eight players from a team that went 24-7 and shared the Big East regular-season title. The group is led by Marcus Zegarowski, who was named Big East Preseason Player of the Year after averaging 16.1 points and 5.9 assists per game.

Nebraska Athletics announced that men's basketball season tickets would not be sold for the 2020-21 season. There will be no fans at 2020-21 men's basketball non-conference games.  If Big Ten Conference protocol and local Directed Health Measures (DHM) allow for a limited number of fans during the 2020-21 conference season, priority would be given to 2019-20 season-ticket holders and information would be communicated directly to them at a later date.

Roughstock riders on the Mid-Plains Community College rodeo team could be practicing indoors by the beginning of next semester.

Assistant coach Aukai Kaai and the team’s two bull riders have been cleaning up an indoor arena at 5773 W. State Farm Road, south of North Platte, since the college purchased it in August. The work has included ripping out two crow’s nests, stalls, guide rails, panels and railroad ties – essentially creating a blank canvas the college can customize to meet its needs.

“Priority one is getting to a point where the team can practice in that space,” said Mike Steele, area vice president of administrative services. “We’re hoping to be to that point shortly after the first of the year.”

The tentative plan for the inside of the 80-foot by 200-foot building is to add three bucking chutes that the team already owns to the west end. Behind them will be holding pens – linked to the chutes with alleyways, which will allow for the transfer of roughstock.

A concrete slab will be poured in the southeast corner for the team’s bucking barrel, and new panels will be installed along the north and south sides of the Quonset to form a barrier between animals and the metal frame columns.

Before that can happen, however, dirt work has to be done. A combination of sand and loam is currently being hauled in and mixed with the existing arena dirt to improve texture. The arena floor is also being pulled back from the sides of the building and leveled out.

“We have to raise the level about six inches,” Steele said.

Eventually, the ground around the outside of the building will have to be improved as well. The Quonset sits on seven acres – much of which is uneven and packed down. Grading is needed on the south side of the building so water can drain off.

The hope is that one day a lean-to and new corrals can also be built on the south side of the building to accommodate practice horses and bulls. Until then, the focus will remain on the interior of the structure.

It’s the first time the team has had an indoor arena for roughstock practices. The timed event athletes can practice in the heated Alice Arena at the Red Willow County Fairgrounds in McCook, but that doesn’t have bucking chutes.

Up to this point, the roughstock competitors have practiced outside at the Wild West Arena in North Platte.

“Getting this indoor arena is huge,” Kaai said. “As a recruiting point, kids are able to practice all year long and be out of the elements. It’s especially going to be nice in terms of how close the arena is to campus.”

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - The 2021 Pinnacle Bank Championship will be the final event on the 2021 Korn Ferry Tour, with 25 pros receiving PGA Tour cards after the tournament at The Club at Indian Creek.

The tour announced Tuesday the event would be played Aug. 9-15 and all four rounds will be televised by the Golf Channel.

The top 25 players in the Korn Ferry points standings automatically receive PGA Tour cards for the following year.

Organizers also announced a five-year extension with title sponsor Pinnacle Bank through 2025.

"We're honored to continue hosting the game's rising stars and it's exciting to know Omaha will now be synonymous with players reaching their dreams of making the PGA Tour," tournament director Jessica Brabec said.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Upon meeting Luke McCaffrey for the first time, Nebraska defensive lineman Ty Robinson probably hoped his new roommate would cut back on the caffeine.

"That man," Robinson said, "is a ball of energy."

Robinson lived with McCaffrey when they first arrived at Nebraska last year, and he quickly discovered the Cornhuskers' new starting quarterback doesn't know how to dial it down. There's always pep in his step, a slap on the back for everyone on the sideline, a can-do attitude regardless of the situation.

"I feel like he has that fire in him to get other guys going and I think that's going to be key for our offense," Robinson said. "He's got that fire, that competitive edge where we're going to start seeing good things happen."

The move from Adrian Martinez to McCaffrey wasn't a huge surprise, though. The little brother of NFL star Christian McCaffrey had flashed playmaking ability in multiple roles last year and coach Scott Frost knew his offense was better with Luke McCaffrey on the field.

Frost said in the offseason the plan was for McCaffrey to focus on being a quarterback rather than a receiver this season. The preseason competition between Martinez and McCaffrey was neck-and-neck, and Frost said he would have been comfortable with either one as the starter, but Martinez separated himself because of his incumbency.

Martinez showed little spark in losses to Ohio State and Northwestern, making change imminent.

Frost said McCaffrey was "really solid" against Penn State. The redshirt freshman from Highlands Ranch, Colorado, threw for 152 yards and ran for 67 and, true to his personality, popped up quickly each time he was tackled. He also had a hand in two touchdowns.

That doesn't mean McCaffrey has the job locked up.

"It will always be the same: whoever gives us the best chance to win is going to be out there," Frost said, "and whoever practices the best."

McCaffrey accounted for 135 yards playing three positions against Ohio State. He stood ready on the sideline against Northwestern, helmet always on, but didn't get into the game until late in the third quarter other than being a decoy for one play in the first half.

Though fans have clamored to see more of McCaffrey since the middle of last season, he said it wasn't hard waiting for his chance to start.

"I think patience is a very valuable skill for anybody, especially for an athlete," he said. "When it comes to evaluation, I consider myself my hardest critic, and moving forward there are things that can be cleaned up, and efficiency will continue to grow."

McCaffrey's signature play against Penn State came late in the first half. With a pass rusher closing in, he switched the ball from his right to left hand and dumped it off to Marvin Scott III. The third-and-9 play netted 14 yards, and the Huskers kicked a field goal to lead 27-6 at halftime.

Frost had no problem with the play because it worked.

"I told him this morning I never want to curtail their creative ability as football payers," Frost said. "You have to be disciplined when you do those things and make sure they don't turn into negative plays."

McCaffrey said Martinez has been supportive. Martinez, who didn't play against Penn State, had started all 23 of his career games and is in his second year as a team captain.

"He's been right there by my side," McCaffrey said, "and he's been one of the best role models, best people and best leaders that I've been able to meet."

Nebraska center Cam Jurgens said the offense runs smoothly with either quarterback. McCaffrey does bring an intangible, though.
