Byrn is currently a physical education teacher at Eisenhower Elementary School. Coach Byrn brings extensive knowledge and experience to the program. The Nebraska volleyball team was selected as the No. 7&nbsp;overall seed for the 2022 Division I Women's Volleyball Championship on Sunday night and will host the first and second rounds at the Bob Devaney Sports Center this Thursday and Friday.&nbsp; The Huskers, making their 41st straight NCAA Tournament appearance and hosting the first round for the 37th time, will open the tournament on Thursday, Dec. 1 at 7 p.m. against Delaware State (24-6), champions of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. The 4:30 p.m. match will feature Kansas (18-10) of the Big 12 Conference and Miami (19-10) of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Thursday's winners will meet in the second round on Friday, Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. Texas, Louisville, Wisconsin&nbsp;and Stanford&nbsp;received the top four seeds. Should those teams all advance past the second round, they would host an NCAA Regional on Dec. 8-10. Nebraska is in the same region as No. 2 Louisville,&nbsp;along with No. 10&nbsp;national seed Oregon and No. 15 national seed&nbsp;Baylor. Huskers open NCAA Tournament vs. Delaware State

DENVER (AP) — Whether Pete Carroll meant it as a barb for Russell 
Wilson or a bouquet for Geno Smith, the Seattle Seahawks coach made 
play-calling wristbands a hot topic in the NFL during a topsy-turvy 
season that has rattled the longstanding quarterback order.

Carroll
 was talking about the Seahawks’ surprising success in 2022 after moving
 on from Wilson when he mentioned Smith’s willingness to wear a 
wristband to help facilitate Seattle's play-calling.

“If you 
notice, Geno’s going off the wristband, and that’s a big help,” Carroll 
told Seattle Sports 710 AM earlier this month. “It’s smoothed things 
out, sped things up. And that’s part of it, too. We never did that 
before. There was resistance to that. So, we didn’t do that before.”

Wilson retorted with his own <a href="https://apnews.com/article/jacksonville-jaguars-denver-broncos-seattle-seahawks-nfl-sports-612de661c6102546d755e3cd732c2927">subtle dig</a>,
 reminding that he "won a lot of games there without one on the wrist. 
And I didn’t know winning or losing mattered if you wore the wristband 
or not.”

Coincidentally, Wilson wore a wristband for the first 
time with the Broncos in a win over the Jaguars in London two days 
before Carroll's comments, and he's been using it at games and practices
 ever since as the Broncos try to jump-start a sputtering offense.

He even wore it at the podium on Wednesday.

“Yeah, I guess I'm rocking this wristband here,” Wilson said with a chuckle.

On
 any weekend, roughly two-thirds of NFL quarterbacks are rocking the 
wristbands. Tom Brady has used one his whole career. But some QBs and 
coaches prefer memorization skills for their more complex plays.

The
 bands that hug the quarterback's non-throwing wrist and forearm contain
 dozens of plays with corresponding numbers or codes. They are often as 
much a benefit to the play-caller as to the QB because he can just call 
out a simple number rather than the entire play sequence with all its 
protections, checks and other nuances.

“As a play designer 
sometimes you want to get a little creative and those things can get a 
little bit verbose,” Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett said.

Calling
 out a number and not the entire play sequence saves a few ticks before 
the quarterback's earpiece shuts off with 15 seconds left on the play 
clock. The QB can then relay the play and break the huddle quicker, 
getting up to the line of scrimmage with a few extra seconds to survey 
the defense for any necessary adjustments.

Hackett said the 
wristbands especially come in handy on the road and are particularly 
helpful with the game's ever more complex play calls.

“It's just how offenses have advanced,” Hackett said. “... we're getting more elaborate with our play designs."

Not
 all plays on the coaches' call sheets are listed on the quarterbacks' 
wristbands. They're often limited to those complex calls or to red-zone 
plays that are installed later in the week, which means players have had
 less time to practice them.

Some QBs, such as the Titans' Ryan Tannehill, have tried them but don't wear them all the time like Brady does.

“Last
 year when we went to Seattle I wore one” because of the din at Lumen 
Field, Tannehill said. “Not too many times. I like to be able to hear 
the call and visualize it in my head as it comes in. It just helps me 
build the picture of what’s going on. When I hear it and I have to build
 the picture of the play in my head, it helps me communicate with my 
guys as opposed to reading a line on a wristband.”

Vikings QB Kirk
 Cousins doesn't usually wear a wristband, and that has something to do 
with Rams coach Sean McVay, who was Cousins' offensive coordinator in 
Washington from 2014-16.

Cousins recalled telling McVay, “These plays are long, and I could use a wristband.”

"Sean
 would say, ‘I don’t look down at the call sheet to call the play to see
 what the wristband number is. I just call the game from my head,’” 
Cousins recounted. “So, he said, ‘We can’t do that because I’d have to 
go find the play and then give you the number.’ I learned with Sean that
 I’m just going to have to memorize these plays and I don’t have the 
luxury of a wristband.”

“There’s so many different ways to do it 
and I think there’s positives and negatives to every different way,” 
Cousins said. “There’s times where I like having a fair amount of words 
because you can paint the picture better, but there’s other times where 
you’re calling two to three plays and it can just be a lot. With a 
motion, a shift, an alert and you have the play clock, so there’s a lot 
going on.”

Cousins said he picked up a trick from backup Nick Mullens when he was digesting the Vikings' new offense this summer.

“I
 was really struggling late in August and early September of really 
getting to a place where I could spit the plays out with just total 
ownership,” Cousins said. He recalled Mullens telling him, “I just 
record the tricky plays on my phone and instead of listening to music or
 the radio on the drive to and from work, I'll just listen to the play 
calls.”

“I started doing that and my drives are a little more 
boring," Cousins said, “but I find myself getting home to the garage and
 I feel a little better about the game plan and my command of the game 
plan.”

The Hawkeyes were 1-3 in conference play a month ago and a December trip to Indianapolis looked like an impossibility with upstart Illinois reeling off wins. But the Illini have lost three straight and the Hawkeyes are on the doorstep after four straight wins. Iowa has won 14 straight November games.

Ramiah Adedigba scored 23 points to lead all scorers, as North Platte hung on late to defeat Hastings College JV 98-95 in a tightly contested battle on the hardwood Tuesday night.

Adedigba connected on 9-of-16 of his shots from the field, while North Platte as a team shot 45.8 percent from the floor and forced 16 turnovers in the game to close out the Broncos.

Bruce Carpenter and Antwone Gonzales combined for 41 points, which helped erase a three-game losing skid for the Knights dating back to Nov. 9.

In the opening half, the Knights and Broncos fought valiantly in the opening minutes as the margin never exceeded five, until the Knights launched an 11-2 run sparked by a free throw line jumper by Gonzales. Carpenter kept his teammates involved during the run, accounting for two points and one of his four opening half assists during the stretch.

Broncos attempted to switch the momentum over the final three minutes, but the Knights managed to take a double-digit lead into the halftime break.

An early second half surge helped the Knights extend their lead to 60-40 in the opening minutes. The Broncos responded with a run of their own to cut the margin to 66-57 on a transition layup by Hayden Grint.

Knights held strong despite their lead shrinking to five inside the final ten minutes, as they regained the momentum and the double-digit advantage with 7:09 remaining. Broncos slowly creeped back into the game over the remaining minutes cutting the deficit to one on an Airan Lopez three pointer.

North Platte and Hastings exchanged free throw attempts inside the closing seconds, before an unusual play nearly brought the Broncos all the way back with a buzzer beating three.

Under two seconds remaining the Knights inbound would land in the hands of former North Platte native Jack Heiss who attempted a half court three. His shot skipped off the iron, allowing the Knights to escape the last second heroics to claim their fourth win of the season.

North Platte (4-3) will return to the hardwood Friday, Dec. 2 against Eastern Wyoming College. Tip is set for 7 p.m. inside the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium.

Knights hold off late surge by Broncos to seal home win

Lincoln, Ne - The Hitchcock County Falcons from Trenton &amp; Culbertson Nebraska respectivly won the D2 State Championship Monday morning at UNL's Memorial Stadium 22-12 over perinial powerhouse Howells-Dodge.&nbsp;

The Falcons were up 8-0 after the first quarter, but trailed 12-8 at halftime. On the first drive of the 3rd quarter, Hitchcock County scored on a long Touchdown Pass. The Falcons would score another Touchdown in the 4th quarter to seal their first title. Hitchcock County finished the season 13-0. Howells-Dodge finished 12-1.

The Badgers earned their grinding victory on a raw afternoon at Memorial Stadium after losing Big Ten sacks leader Nick Herbig to a targeting penalty in the third quarter and star running back Braelon Allen to a leg injury on their second-to-last possession. Wisconsin is bowl-eligible for a 21st straight year.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Wisconsin team that has endured the midseason firing of its head coach and the death of a former teammate let its emotions spill out as groups of players gathered near midfield at Memorial Stadium to celebrate and pose for pictures with the Freedom Trophy.

Graham Mertz scored on a 2-yard quarterback sneak with 35 seconds left to complete a comeback from an 11-point deficit entering the fourth quarter, and the Badgers beat Nebraska 15-14 Saturday for their ninth straight win in the series.

"It's everything that this team has overcome off the field, that was what came up on the field today," Mertz said. "There's so many emotions and feelings that guys have had to deal with this year. There's so many different things that have happened to us this year that could easily have buried us and made us just fold. It's really cool to see how guys come together and want to succeed together."

Wisconsin (6-5, 4-4 Big Ten) arrived in Lincoln with heavy hearts and left eligible for a bowl for a 21st straight year.

The Badgers had to cope with the death of former teammate Devin Chandler, who was one of three Virginia football players killed in a shooting last Sunday in Charlottesville. Interim coach Jim Leonhard had said late in the week that he sensed players who were friends with Chandler could be distracted.

"It was such a rough week, and early on the game mirrored that," said Leonhard, 4-2 since taking over for the fired Paul Chryst. "It was ugly for a long time, and the guys just continued to battle and find ways to make plays."

The Badgers were held to three points through three quarters and lost their top defensive player, Nick Herbig, to a targeting penalty and its top offensive player, Braelon Allen, to a leg injury on their second-to-last possession.

Mertz's 10-yard TD pass to Skyler Bell cut Nebraska's lead to 14-9. Mertz was off target with his 2-point pass, leaving the Badgers down five with 10 minutes left.

Wisconsin started its final drive from midfield with 3:11 left. Mertz passed to Isaac Guerendo for 27 yards to set up the winning touchdown.

"I've got to do a better job of closing people out," Nebraska interim coach Mickey Joseph said. "I take my hat off to these kids. Just a good character group, a group that's not going to quit. We're going to come back next week and we're going to play hard again and look for a different result. Just didn't happen today. This one hurts."

Casey Thompson, who missed the previous two games with an elbow nerve injury, threw two touchdown passes to Trey Palmer and finished 12 of 20 for 106 yards for Nebraska (3-8, 2-6).

Chez Mellusi led the Badgers with 98 yards on 21 carries. Mertz was 8 of 18 for 83 yards on a day when the feels-like temperature was 16 degrees with a gusty north wind.

Herbig was ejected for targeting when he hit a sliding Thompson in the head. By rule, Herbig must miss the first half of next week's rivalry game against Minnesota.

Allen, already playing with a banged-up shoulder, had 92 yards on 18 carries before he hopped off the field with an apparent leg injury late in the game.

"There was a lot going on this week," Allen said, "and that was a great way to turn the rough side of the week into something positive and get a big win and keep the trophy at home."

Wisconsin: The Badgers had to work hard for this one even though they rushed for 235 yards and outgained the Huskers in total offense 318-171. There was no immediate word on the extent of Allen's injury.

Nebraska: This was a crushing loss for a team desperate for its first win since Oct. 7. The Huskers suffered a big blow when safety Marquis Buford left with a leg injury on the second play.

The game was the Big Ten's first that matched interim head coaches since Illinois' Bill Cubit and Minnesota's Tracy Claeys squared off in 2015. Leonhard said he hopes he's made a case to have the interim tag removed.

"We're playing much better," he said. "Winning games is No. 1, and there's a way, style, even in a loss — how you play, togetherness, how hard you fight, that matters. Even in games we come up short, the fight and grit factor have been there."

Wisconsin hosts Minnesota on Saturday looking to get back Paul Bunyan's Axe.

Nebraska closes on the road at Iowa, which has beaten the Huskers seven straight times.

Mertz's late sneak for TD pushes Badgers past Nebraska 15-14

North Platte Community College announces the hiring of Will Peers, of North Platte, as the institution's first men's head golf coach. Peers will begin duties immediately.

"This is a great opportunity for me after already having built a successful junior golf program locally," said Peers. "I am excited to be granted this opportunity to build this program from scratch and help student-athletes become successful at the next level."

Peers currently serves as the general manager of the Lake Maloney Golf Course and owner of Peers Golf Academy in North Platte. He is a 2010 graduate of Grand Island Central Catholic and would later take his talents to the collegiate level while playing for Central Community College.

"We're glad to be adding men's golf to our list of athletic programs and believe that Will Peers is the right person to be&nbsp;our coach," said athletic director Kevin O'Connor. "Will has developed a successful junior golf program, and we believe he will do the same for our golf program."

The Knights men's golf team will open its inaugural season in the fall of 2023.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin interim head coach Jim Leonhard said Thursday his players are still grieving the loss of former Badgers receiver Devin Chandler and believes it might keep some from being focused enough to play Saturday at Nebraska.

Chandler and Virginia teammates Lavel Davis Jr. and D'Sean Perry were returning from a class trip Sunday night when a uthorities say they were killed by a fellow student and former football player. Chandler played for Wisconsin from 2020-21 before transferring to Virginia.

Leonhard said his players took the news hard, particularly those who were closest to Chandler.

"They got close because of football, right?" Leonhard said. "So every time they're around football, it becomes fresh again, whether that's sitting in a meeting and having thoughts about something that happened or hitting that field and bringing up a different memory."

Leonhard says he doesn't expect any players not to make the trip to Nebraska because they're still mourning, but he wondered whether some would be emotionally ready to play in a game.

"You see a number of guys who are getting that energy back and kind of being able to focus a little bit more, and then you see another handful that still are really struggling," Leonhard said. "We need to support them in every way we can and try to find out what the best role for them on gameday is going to be and how to continue to support them every day going forward."

Leonhard said the coaching staff has the task of "trying to find out who's going to give us the best chance to win if the focus can't be there, if they can't kind of handle the emotions either of the day or kind of the moment."

"It's tough because I want our guys to understand those emotions are real and I'm not trying to make them eat them and move on," Leonhard said. "We'd never ask them to do that. But at the same time, we have to prepare for a game, and we have to find a way to win on Saturday. I give them a lot of credit. They've been through a ton."

Wisconsin's players already dealt with the loss of former running backs coach Gary Brown earlier this year. Brown, who coached Wisconsin's running backs last season, died April 10 at the age of 52 after stepping down from coaching for health-related reasons.

Wisconsin visits Nebraska on Saturday looking to beat the Cornhuskers a ninth straight time. The Badgers need to win one of their last two regular-season games to become bowl-eligible. The Badgers are 1-3 in Big Ten road games and a loss in Lincoln would put them at risk for their first losing season since 2001. Nebraska has quarterback issues. Casey Thompson has missed two straight games because of injury and Chubba Purdy is out for the season because of an ankle injury last week at Michigan. This was the home opener for the Lopers (1-2) and an exhibition game for the Thunder (3-2) of the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA). UNK made 27 of 61 three point shots (44%) last weekend in Duluth and matched the effort tonight by going 15 of 33. Eight different players had a make with sophomore wing&nbsp;Tom Connelly&nbsp;(Denver) at a team-best four. "It's just part what we do. We're five out and we do a lot of cutting and screening and that's the one shot (a three) that tends to present itself the most," said UNK head coach&nbsp;Kevin Lofton. "We're trying to find ways to get the other shots…the layups and free throws. We have to get better (in those areas) and I know we can make our free throws once we get there." Manhattan Christian, led by guard Ferdinand Handy Jr., hung around for the first 12 minutes before the Lopers closed the half on a 15-9 run. Jada Grigsby led four North Platte players in double figures with 13 points and eight rebounds to power a balanced offense in a 73-57 win over York College JV on Tuesday evening.

Chrishelle Washington and Fumnanya Ijeh each finished the night with 11 points, while Dayonna Roberts chipped in 10 points to accompany her four rebounds and four steals.

Knights held the Panthers to 25.9 percent (15-58) shooting from the field, including 51.3 percent from the free throw line.

A relatively quiet opening quarter as the Knights jumped out to a 17-10 lead after the first ten minutes. Washington broke open the scoring by driving through the lane and getting her runner to fall, as the Knights took the early 2-0 lead.

The Panthers rallied to take their first lead just twenty seconds later on a three from Lauren Perez. North Platte and York continued to battle for the remainder of the quarter, before a late 7-2 run helped the Knights extend their lead to seven by the quarter break.&nbsp;

A quick 16-3 surge to open the second quarter helped the Knights build a comfortable lead. Grigsby sparked the Knights by connecting from long range, while also accounting for seven points in the opening 3:56 as the lead stretched to 33-13. York turned the tides down the stretch of the quarter while holding the Knights to just two field goals to close the margin to 14 by the halftime break.

Knights refused to give the Panthers a glance over the final twenty minutes, as the lead stayed in double figures. North Platte managed to extend their lead to 22 on a three by Roberts to close the third quarter, and never looked back to close out their second road win of the season.

For the game, North Platte hit 40.6 percent (26-64) of its shots from the field, while outrebounding the Panthers, 49-42, and winning the turnover battle 22-18.

North Platte (2-5) returns to action on Saturday, when they host Northeast Community College for their home opener of the 2022-23 season. Tip is set for 2 p.m. inside the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium.

Knights rebound with big win over Panthers

No. 20 Creighton jumped to a 22-11 first-quarter lead and never looked back, as the No. 22 Nebraska women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season with a 77-51 setback at D.J.&nbsp;Sokol&nbsp;Arena on Tuesday night. North Platte St. Patrick's boys' have had a heck of a run in recent years. They won the 2022 Boys State Basketball Championship in March this year, both boys and girls won the 2022 Track &amp; Field State Championships, and the 2021 Boys State Golf Championship also went to North Platte St. Patricks. Today marks the first time since 2011 that the Irish have made the state semifinals. St. Pat's is undeatfed so far (11-0) in their first year of 8-Man football, and no opponent has come closer than 24 points to NPSP this year.&nbsp;

The Irish faceoff tonight against Neligh-Oakdale who defeated Riverside 40-28 last week. Neligh-Oakdale is 10-1, their only loss came in the first week of the season to Howell's-Dodge who is playing tonight in the D2 State Semifinals. St. Pat's vs. Neligh-Oakdale will be played in Neligh tonight at 7pm Central Time.

North Platte trailed by 14 at the break, but the Rattlers managed to extend their lead to 65-39 by the end of the quarter, while holding the Knights to just three field goals. During the ten-minute stretch the Knights earned five trips to the free throw line, although connecting on 7-of-10 of their opportunities it wasn't enough to close the gap on the home team.

Dayonna Roberts broke the silence with a three pointer at the 7:26 mark of the fourth quarter. Knights continued running through their offense in the fourth, but Otero built a strong lead that could not be overcome.

Ramiah Adedigba led the Knights with 19 points, followed closely by teammates Antwone Gonzales and Bruce Carpenter who each finished the night with 18 and 17 points, respectively.

Mustangs used a 13-1 run to take control of the game in the opening minutes. Knights narrowed the margin under ten for most of the opening half, but Western Wyoming managed to fight off the pressure to take the lead into the halftime break.

The Mustangs stretched their lead to 49-33 with 15:37 to play in the second half before the Knights scored seven straight points to pull within nine. The margin stayed under twelve until Western Wyoming went on a 7-0 run to extend their lead to fourteen.

Men's Basketball - Mustangs down Knights to open tournament

College athletic programs of all sizes are reacting to inflation the same way as everyone else. They're looking for ways to save. Travel and food are the primary areas with increased costs. Schools in major conferences are working with boosters and other partners to try to bridge the financial gap. Arizona estimates it could spend $4 million more across the board this year than it would if the U.S. inflation rate hadn't risen to more than 8%. Division III Mary Baldwin University in Virginia played exhibitions against Division II teams for a few thousand dollars to pay for basketball shoes.

College athletic programs are reacting to soaring inflation the same way as everyone else — they're looking for ways big and small to save money.

In the Power Five, home of college sports' biggest budgets and most considerable resources, schools are working with boosters and other partners to try to bridge the financial gap. Working down the line to smaller institutions, where budgets and resources are smaller, creativity is a must.

For schools of all sizes, travel and food are the most challenging issues.

Nebraska, with 24 sports programs and an athletic budget of $168 million this year, hopes to work with its beef and chicken vendors to find more cost-effective ways to order food for the training table. It's also lining up more nonprofit groups to work concession stands to reduce labor costs.

The school expects the cost of doing business to be about $3 million more than it would be if the U.S. inflation rate hadn't risen to more than 8%.

Arizona, which has a $101.6 million budget and 21 sports, projects costs could increase by $4 million, according to Derek van der Merwe, an assistant vice president and chief operating officer for administration and athletics at the Pac-12 school.

"You have to work real closely with all your teams to take a look at what changes you can make to absorb that cost within your operating budgets, or you have to look at other opportunities to increase revenues to offset those costs," van der Merwe said. "The post-pandemic economy and insecurity is around a lot of the budgets we have to manage and makes it challenging because we don't know what to anticipate."

Those Power Five schools, though, have deep-pocketed boosters they can often rely on in times of need, an insurance policy for budgetary concerns.

At Mary Baldwin University, a private school with about 1,000 undergraduate students in Staunton, Virginia, it's a far different story. The school competes in Division III in the USA South Athletic Conference, and most of its members are in North Carolina, anywhere from 3½ to 6 hours away.

Besides the cost of travel, there are overnight stays and food expenses.

The Fighting Squirrels do not field a football team, having only started admitting men in 2017, but added baseball and men's basketball last year. The new programs began just as the athletic budget, cut 20% during the pandemic, was restored to its previous level before those additions, athletic director Tom Byrnes said.

"So we're doing things here on a shoestring," he told The Associated Press. "And we're getting it done, you know, as best we can. But inflation is not helping us."

The school is banking on its creativity and some local generosity.

Men's basketball, 8-13 in its inaugural season, will play exhibitions against two Division I programs, rather than a couple scrimmages that might be more helpful for player development, hoping to bring in $3,000-$4,000 for each to pay for the team's basketball shoes.

"Baseball, softball and women's basketball teams all work in concession stands or as ushers at James Madison football games," Byrnes said, traveling in a bus provided by a local company at cost. The school also is negotiating with a used car dealer to have it provide a car for coaches to use on recruiting trips for free, and has local restaurants that sometimes provide food at a discount.

"So those are the kind of things we have to do. We do nickel and dime stuff, too. The women's soccer team has a Kona ice truck at games, so stuff like that," Byrnes said.

Travel and food are the primary areas with increased costs. Schools in major conferences are working with boosters and other partners to try to bridge the financial gap. Arizona estimates it could spend $4 million more across the board this year than it would if the U.S. inflation rate hadn't risen to more than 8%. Working down the line to smaller institutions, where budgets and resources are smaller, creativity is a must.For schools of all sizes, travel and food are the most challenging issues.Nebraska, with 24 sports programs and an athletic budget of $168 million this year, hopes to work with its beef and chicken vendors to find more cost-effective ways to order food for the training table. It's also lining up more nonprofit groups to work concession stands to reduce labor costs.The school expects the cost of doing business to be about $3 million more than it would be if the U.S. inflation rate hadn't risen to more than 8%.Arizona, which has a $101.6 million budget and 21 sports, projects costs could increase by $4 million, according to Derek van der Merwe, an assistant vice president and chief operating officer for administration and athletics at the Pac-12 school."You have to work real closely with all your teams to take a look at what changes you can make to absorb that cost within your operating budgets, or you have to look at other opportunities to increase revenues to offset those costs," van der Merwe said. "The post-pandemic economy and insecurity is around a lot of the budgets we have to manage and makes it challenging because we don't know what to anticipate."Those Power Five schools, though, have deep-pocketed boosters they can often rely on in times of need, an insurance policy for budgetary concerns.At Mary Baldwin University, a private school with about 1,000 undergraduate students in Staunton, Virginia, it's a far different story. The school competes in Division III in the USA South Athletic Conference, and most of its members are in North Carolina, anywhere from 3½ to 6 hours away.Besides the cost of travel, there are overnight stays and food expenses.The Fighting Squirrels do not field a football team, having only started admitting men in 2017, but added baseball and men's basketball last year. The new programs began just as the athletic budget, cut 20% during the pandemic, was restored to its previous level before those additions, athletic director Tom Byrnes said."So we're doing things here on a shoestring," he told The Associated Press. Coaches' requests for equipment are scrutinized, and they are sometimes asked to give up something in return.But they all still have to travel, and eat.Nebraska expects to spend $9.2 million on athletic department travel this year, executive associate athletic director and CFO Doug Ewald said. That's a 17% increase, or $1.3 million. Arizona, meanwhile, expects its athletic travel costs to increase 20%-25% over last year, van der Merwe said.Foresight helped Iowa State avoid some of the increases, senior associate athletic director Chris Jorgensen said, by locking in charter flight costs months or even years ago, while rival Iowa's football travel will increase appreciably.Charter flights for the Hawkeyes will be 8.5% higher and charter bus costs are up 12%, associate athletic director and CFO Greg Davies told the AP.The Nebraska training table will see food costs rise about 20% this year, from $3.2 million to $3.8 million. Nebraska athletes consume 2,200 pounds of beef each month, and Ewald said the athletic department hopes to work with vendors to find ways to get better deals for buying in greater bulk.Arizona, like Nebraska, is trying to absorb the added costs due to inflation by tightening belts. One thing is not negotiable, van der Merwe said."Our philosophy is that we make sure the student-athlete experience is the priority for everything we budget and plan for," he said, "and everything around that is curtailed in order to make sure we maintain the integrity of that priority."The philosophy is the same at Randolph-Macon College, another Division III school in Virginia. Athletic director Jeff Burns credits the school's athletic success for having allowed it to dip into reserves to maintain that standard."There's really a spectrum across Division III. You're going to see a lot of different ways where the haves are going to be able to handle it and the have nots are probably going to be forced to make some changes," Burns said.After more than three decades in sports, it's not how Mary Baldwin's Byrnes imagined things. He took the job six months before the pandemic began."It's challenging," he said. "But you know what?
