The North Platte Community College volleyball team is headed to the NJCAA Region IX Championship after defeating Southeast Community College 3-1 Wednesday night in the opening round of the tournament.

The Knights jumped out early, stretching their lead to four midway through the opening set, 11-7. North Platte maintained the momentum for the remainder of the set and took the early one set advantage, 25-20.

The second set was a mirror of the first, as the Storm stayed within three to four points early. A kill by Morgan Ramsey helped extend the deficit to seven, but the Storm quickly closed the gap late in the set. The Knights were able to regain their momentum and sealed the second set victory, 25-19.

Southeast regrouped and came back strong in the third set, creating the biggest deficit faced by either team up to that point. The Storm led by 11 (21-9) until a service error gave the Knights a reprieve.

North Platte used the error to their advantage and battled their way back, tying the game 24-24. Back-to-back attacking errors by the Knights halted the comeback, as the Storm claimed set three, 24-26.

With the pressure mounting, the teams stayed neck and neck through the start of the fourth set. North Platte recaptured the momentum they had early in the match and took a commanding 11-point lead midway through. Unable to switch the momentum, Southeast fell in set four 25-16.

“I’m proud of the whole team,” said NPCC Volleyball Head Coach Alexa McCall. “They worked their tails off in practice the last two days, and that’s why we were successful. They pushed each other and made each other better. We played awesome defense and served well, which allowed us some good opportunities offensively.”

The Knights (8-26) will look for revenge against Central Community College (16-19) in the championship. Action begins at 3 p.m. Saturday in Columbus.

Knights Volleyball advances to Region IX Championship

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Mickey Joseph slipped up in his role as Nebraska’s interim head coach Tuesday when he responded to a reporter’s comment and question about a standout high school player who recently pledged to sign with the Cornhuskers.

Malachi Coleman, a four-star wide receiver from Lincoln East High, held an event Saturday to announce he had chosen Nebraska over five other schools. He is the highest-rated prospect in the state.

The first day he can sign his letter of intent is Dec. 21. NCAA rules prohibit coaches from commenting on an unsigned prospective recruit.

A reporter at the Huskers' weekly news conference interrupted as Joseph was answering another question.

“You got Malachi Coleman this weekend,” the reporter said.

“I wasn't finished answering that question,” Joseph said.

The reporter apologized, and Joseph said, “I'm just joking. You're so uptight. But, no, right, we got Malachi."

Asked if he had spoken to Coleman since the announcement, Joseph said, "Well, he said six months ago he wasn't coming, so you put the pieces together."

Joseph was named interim coach Sept. 11, the same day Scott Frost was fired after the Huskers' 1-2 start.

Joseph smirked immediately after making the comment and as he walked out of the news conference he asked athletic department media relations staffers if he had made a mistake.

Spokesman Keith Mann wrote in an email to The Associated Press that Joseph contacted the school's compliance office immediately after the news conference to make its staff aware of the comment.

According to Bylaw 13.10.1.1 in the 2022-23 NCAA manual, an institution "is precluded from commenting in any manner as to the likelihood of the prospective student-athlete committing to or signing with that institution."

Nebraska middle blocker&nbsp;<a href="https://huskers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=43951">Bekka Allick</a>&nbsp;was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Monday for the second straight week.&nbsp; Allick&nbsp;led the Huskers to sweeps at No. 12 Purdue and at Illinois last week, averaging 3.17 kills per set with a .548 hitting percentage.&nbsp; The Lincoln native had a career-best 12 kills on .611 hitting to go with four blocks in the sweep over the Boilermakers last Wednesday. She followed that up on Saturday with seven kills on .462 hitting with a block and an ace at Illinois.&nbsp; Over the last six matches, Allick is averaging 2.68 kills per set with a .542 hitting percentage. Allick repeats as B1G freshman of the week

The North Platte Community College volleyball team will host the opening round of the National Junior College Athletic Association Region IX Postseason Tournament this week against Southeast Community College.&nbsp;

First serve is at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium on the NPCC South Campus, 601 W. State Farm Rd.

“I like our matchup against Southeast, and I’m glad that we get to host that opening round game,” said NPCC Volleyball Head Coach Alexa McCall. “We have a great facility, and the community and college support is always appreciated. We would love to have everyone cheer the Knights on for this game.”

NPCC enters postseason play sporting a 7-26 overall record and 1-3 record in Region IX action. Southeast (9-27) also concluded the regular season with a region record of 1-3 but lost the tie-breaker, making them the third seed in the postseason tournament.

Morgan Ramsey, a sophomore outside hitter, leads the region this season with 3.47 kills per set, while ranking second overall in total kills with 371. Her teammate, Emily Johnson, is fourth in the region averaging almost one block per set.

The Knights’ Whitney Chintala ranks third in digs per set with 3.65, while teammate Tessa Metschke is fifth with 2.84. Freshman Avah Steggall heads into postseason play ranked third in the region in assists per set – with 6.38.

“We have a great opportunity, and I think the team is excited to get another chance at Southeast and then hopefully against Central,” McCall said. “We have talked all year about how winning games isn’t easy, and I want this to be the team that works the hardest and leaves everything out there because anything can happen at this point. We are ready for postseason, and I’m excited to see the things we accomplish, because I believe our work isn’t done.”

The winner of the opening round will advance to the championship against Central Community College at 3 p.m. Oct. 29 in Columbus.

&nbsp; The University of Nebraska Cornhuskers capitalized on its advantages in the paint, and took advantage of bench depth, to top the Chadron State College Eagles 87-60 in an exhibition matchup in Lincoln on Sunday afternoon. "Obviously, they're a Big Ten opponent," said CSC Head Men's Basketball Coach&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/coaches.aspx?rc=551">Shane Paben</a>. "They were able to grab offensive rebounds and get points underneath the basket, just because of their sheer size. But we competed and gave great effort, and we were only down six just before the first media timeout of the second half. It was a great experience for the team the whole weekend." The Huskers started slowly. CSC either led or was tied for the first five and a half minutes, thanks in part to a 1-for-5 opening rally by Nebraska. CSC junior forward&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8506">Porter Anderson</a>&nbsp;got under the basket for a dunk in the game's opening score, assisted by senior wing&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8511">MJ Foust</a>, and junior transfer guard&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8513">Bryce Latimer</a>&nbsp;started 3-for-3 as part of a 9-for-15 start for the Eagles. North Platte Community College Volleyball dropped a match against the top ranked team in the region Wednesday night in Columbus.

The Knights took on the Central Community College Raiders and fell in three sets: 16-25, 22-25 and 13-25.

Vanessa Wood had eight kills in the game, and Karley Spillane was right behind her with seven. Amauri Browning went for nine digs while Tessa Metschke provided eight more. Avah Steggall contributed 22 assists.

“We had some changes tonight and didn’t adjust as well as I would have liked,” said NPCC Volleyball Head Coach Alexa McCall. “We have some things to figure out, and we have time to do that before next week. We just have to put in the work.”

There’s only one regular season game left for the Knights. They will play Northeast Community College in Norfolk at 3 p.m. Thursday.

Huskers sweep No. 12 Purdue on the road

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Fred Hoiberg enters his fourth season at Nebraska needing to produce if he plans on getting a fifth.

“I feel pressure every day in my life,” Hoiberg said. “You know, it’s just what comes with this job.”

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/7e11a829e85c41d5aeded79f1baa309b">Hoiberg was one of the nation's splashy coaching hires</a>&nbsp;in 2019, but the Cornhuskers have only regressed. His predecessor, Tim Miles, never finished last in the Big Ten. The Huskers have been at the bottom three straight years and are picked to be there again this season.

The 24 wins under Hoiberg are fewest among Power Five teams the last three years and the Huskers have three straight 20-loss records after never having had any in 123 previous seasons. They also have five losses in home “buy” games, the ones where a low- or mid-major opponent is supposed to take a lopsided beating and leave with a paycheck.

Like Nebraska's celebrated football hire, Scott Frost, Hoiberg was put on the clock after so much underachieving.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nba-sports-mens-college-basketball-college-basketball-nebraska-432d386e10d1d43baf096e8fd277631c">Athletic director Trev Alberts trimmed Hoiberg's salary from $3.5 million</a>&nbsp;to $3.25 million, took away the coach's $500,000 retention bonus and cut his buyout from $18.5 million to $11 million.

Alberts and Hoiberg verbally agreed to metrics the program must reach in order for the coach to earn back some of the money promised in his original contract. Because the terms were not put on paper, they are not subject to state public records laws and remain confidential.

Hoiberg's teams at Iowa State (2010-15) succeeded with a wide-open offense in the Big 12. That system has proved ineffective the last three years in the Big Ten.

Hoiberg wants the Huskers to take on a greater defensive identity. In eight seasons as a college coach, Hoiberg has had only one team finish higher than 245th nationally in scoring defense. His three Nebraska teams have ranked 330th, 268th and 339th.

The coach said newcomers Sam Griesel, Emmanuel Bandoumelsam, Denim Dawson, Juwan Gary and Blaise Keita give the Huskers the necessary length to create more turnovers and be harder to score against.

“What we’re all going to be judged on is how many times we get in that left (win) column," Hoiberg said. "What I’m looking at every day is, are we making progress? We can’t afford to take steps in the wrong direction and then have to go back up.”

Derrick Walker, C.J. Wilcher and Keisei Tominaga are the only returning players from the regular rotation. Wilhelm Breidenbach is back after a season-ending knee injury limited him to 10 games.

Walker is the top returning scorer (9.5 ppg) and rebounder (6.0 rpg) and Wilcher the top returning 3-point shooter (41%).

NBA second-round draft pick Bryce McGowens (16.8 ppg) and Alonzo Verge (14.5 ppg) are the biggest departures. Fellow starters Trey McGowens and Lat Mayen also are gone along with sixth man Kobe Webster.

The Huskers added three Division I transfers in Gary (Alabama), Griesel (North Dakota State) and Bandoumelsam (SMU), junior college transfer Keita (Coffeyville CC) and top-150 high school recruits Ramel Lloyd Jr. and Jamarques Lawrence.

Gary and Griesel have NCAA Tournament experience and Keita won a junior college national championship two years ago.

“It was one of the big things I talked to our staff about in the offseason is really to try to go out there and find guys that have been a part of winning programs,” Hoiberg said.

Hoiberg hired Ernie Zeigler and Adam Howard as assistant coaches. Zeigler spent the last seven years as an assistant at Mississippi State and Howard the last four years as assistant and associate head coach at South Alabama.

Armon Gates, who had been at Nebraska four years, took an assistant's job at Oregon and Matt Abdelmassih left the program after three years on staff.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://huskers.com/sports/mens-basketball/schedule?path=mbball">Huskers open at home against Maine on Nov. 7 and Omaha on Nov. 10.</a>&nbsp;They head to New York to play St. John's on Nov. 17 in the Gavitt Games. Heat on Hoiberg after 3 straight 20-loss seasons at Nebraska

(AP) — Fired Nebraska football coach Scott Frost would have received a one-year contract extension and had his annual salary restored to $5 million if the Cornhuskers had shown improvement, gone 6-6 in the regular season and played in a bowl game, according to athletic director Trev Alberts.

The metrics had been kept private until a judge, citing state open records laws, on Tuesday ordered the terms made public. Alberts announced the terms on his radio show Tuesday night.

USA Today had sued the university after its custodian of records denied a reporter's request for the metrics. The newspaper contended the information should be public under state law, just as coaches' contracts are public records. The university argued the metrics were a personnel matter and confidential.

Lancaster County District Judge Ryan Post sided with USA Today and ordered the university to release the information within seven days.

The metrics Alberts and Frost agreed upon did not guarantee Frost would be retained.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-sports-nebraska-cornhuskers-scott-frost-c044d129471db5294f90ce038d05905b">Frost was fired Sept. 11, the day after a 45-42 loss to Georgia Southern</a>&nbsp;dropped the Huskers to 1-2 this year and 19-31 in Frost's four-plus seasons. Mickey Joseph was named interim head coach.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Justin Herbert didn't throw a touchdown pass for the first time in 27 games. For once, it didn't matter thanks to the Los Angeles Chargers special teams.

Dustin Hopkins kicked four field goals, including a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nfl.com/videos/dustin-hopkins-gw-39-yard-fg-in-ot-sends-chargers-faithful-home-happy">39-yarder with 2:38 remaining in overtime</a>, as the Chargers rallied for a 19-16 victory over the Denver Broncos.

Hopkins, who injured a hamstring during the first half, grimaced as he kicked the ball and fell to the ground before being picked up by teammates. The ninth-year kicker was inactive for last week's game against Cleveland due to a quadriceps injury.

Hopkins' heroics were set up when Deane Leonard recovered a muffed punt at the Denver 28-yard line.

Herbert, who is still recovering from fractured rib cartilage from a hit one month ago, appreciated Hopkins being able to gut it out.

“We’ve got so much respect for him. For him to go out there and play and put up with some pain like that, it was great to see,” said Herbert, whose 56 attempts without a TD pass is an NFL record in a win.

Coach Brandon Staley said Hopkins' hamstring kind of cramped up early, but started to loosen up during the second half.

“You can’t say enough about him hanging in there," Staley said. "At the end we had no choice. We were going to kick no matter what.”

Hopkins has five games with four or more field goals. It is also the first OT game-winner of his career.

“I was trying to focus on a little backswing and just get through the ball. And that was it,” Hopkins said. “I wasn’t thinking about the circumstance or anything like that.”

The Chargers have won three straight to improve to 4-2. They are tied with Kansas City atop the AFC West. It is the first time in franchise history they have rallied from a double-digit deficit at the end of the first quarter to win.

Los Angeles was down 14-3 at the end of the first quarter last Sunday in Cleveland before pulling out a 30-28 win.

This game appeared to be headed toward a tie until Denver's Montrell Washington muffed JK Scott's punt at the Broncos 32-yard line. It was recovered by Deane Leonard at the 28.

Washington called for a fair catch, but Denver safety P.J. Locke didn't hear Washington and tried to block Ja'Sir Taylor when Locke bumped into Washington.

“I just saw the returner running up, he was kind of relaxed, and then his teammate was just standing there," Taylor said. "At first, if you go back, I paused a little bit, and then it just clicked in my head like, ‘Oh, just throw him onto the returner.’ And it happened, and the ball came out.”

Herbert, who completed 37 of 57 for 238 yards and an interception, passed to Mike Williams for 9 yards on third-and-12 from the Denver 30 to get Hopkins closer.

Russell Wilson was 15 of 28 for 188 yards and a touchdown for the Broncos (2-4), who dropped a game in overtime for the second straight week.

“We felt like we could have won the game, and then we had the fluke play at the end. It didn’t work out, but everybody is together,” Wilson said.

Denver jumped out to a 10-0 lead with scores on the first two drives. Brandon McManus was good from 51 yards midway through the first, and Wilson found a wide-open&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nfl.com/videos/can-t-miss-play-wilson-s-39-yard-loft-to-dulcich-nets-te-s-first-nfl-td">Greg Dulcich for a 39-yard touchdown</a>&nbsp;with 1:49 remaining in the quarter.

Dulcich's TD was the first of his career and the Broncos' first in 87 minutes, 54 seconds.

The Chargers answered on their ensuing possession, putting together a 15-play, 82-yard drive that was capped by&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nfl.com/videos/austin-ekeler-enters-beast-mode-on-bruising-6-yard-td-run">Austin Ekeler's 6-yard run up the middle</a>&nbsp;with his linemen helping him get across the goal line.

Following a Denver three-and-out, Los Angeles evened it at 10 on Hopkins' 37-yard field goal with 53 seconds remaining in the half.

The Broncos were not content to run out the clock though. KJ Hamler hauled in a 47-yard pass to the LA 28. Denver got to the Chargers 9 before McManus was good from 27 yards.

The Chargers tied it on their first drive of the third quarter when Hopkins split the uprights from 31 yards.

The teams traded field goals in the fourth quarter. McManus was good from 48 yards after Baron Browning picked off Herbert. The Chargers answered with Hopkins making it from 35.

“This is very disappointing,” Denver coach Nathaniel Hackett said. “We had some opportunities there, and we’ve got to execute at a higher level. We’ve got to come up with some better plays.”

Herbert had a 26-game TD pass streak snapped. It was the third-best run in franchise history and second-longest active streak in the league.

The teams combined for 19 penalties and a season-high 240 yards. The Broncos were flagged 10 times for 151 yards, the 24th time since 2000 a team has drawn more than 150 penalty yards, according to TruMedia.

The Broncos had four pass interference calls for 87 yards.

Ron Torbert’s crew had been conservative coming into the game. In their four previous contests this season, they averaged 12 flags for 92.8 yards.

Wilson's first nine completions were to nine different players. According to the NFL, he is the first player to complete his first nine attempts of a game to nine different receivers since at least 1991, when play-by-play data was first recorded.

Chargers: RB Joshua Kelley suffered a knee injury in the first quarter and did not return.

Broncos: Hackett said CB Essang Bassey (hamstring) and LB Aaron Patrick (knee) were sidelined during the game.

Nebraska High School scores Saturday (Oct. 15)

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Purdue running back Devin Mockobee softened Nebraska's defense with his powerful runs.

Aidan O'Connell kept the Boilermakers chugging by cleaning up with closeout plays.

Together, it was electric combination. O'Connell threw four touchdown passes and Mockobee ran for a career-high 178 yards and another score Saturday as Purdue overpowered Nebraska 43-37.

“He (O'Connell) probably had five or six throws that I don’t think anyone could make — throws that were just off the charts," Purdue coach Jeff Brohm said. “We thought we had a decent plan to get him (Mockobee) on the edge, get him in space and, of course, he runs hard. He doesn’t care who he plays, he runs hard.”

The result: Purdue (5-2, 3-1 Big Ten) has won four straight and remains atop the conference's West Division, tied with No. 24 Illinois.

To Nebraska (3-4, 2-2), the strategy was hardly a surprise.

They knew O’Connell had played well all season, but Mockobee provided a spark for Purdue's struggling ground game and the Cornhuskers couldn't keep either under control as its two-game winning streak under interim coach Mickey Joseph ended.

Mockabee barreled through defenders, eluded tackles and even showed his shiftiness in the open field. He surpassed his previous single-game rushing total before scoring on a 1-yard run with 35 seconds left in the first half.

O'Connell, meanwhile, seemingly made all the right calls including a 3-yard scramble on fourth-and-1 from midfield with 2:59 to go that finally closed out the victory.

“That guy just doesn't make mistakes with the football,” Jospeh said, referring to O'Connell. “He’s been in this program for six years and he doesn't make mistakes.”

Trey Palmer didn't make any mistakes for Nebraska, either.

He almost single-handedly kept Nebraska close with one big play after another after Purdue took a 27-13 halftime lead.

On the fifth play of the second half, Palmer cut a 37-yard TD pass to cut the deficit in half. On the next series, his 60-yard run set up a field goal to make it 27-23.&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/i/status/1581467022616981505">Then, after TJ Sheffield</a>&nbsp;extended the Boilermakers' lead with 28-yard TD catch,&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/i/status/1581467961826545666">Palmer immediately answered with a 72-yard TD catch</a>&nbsp;to make it 34-30.

And even when it appeared a 2-yard scoring pass from O'Connell to Jones with 6:55 to go closed it out, Palmer caught a 64-yard pass to set up Anthony Grant's 1-yard TD run with 5:55 left.

But O'Connell's fourth-down conversion made sure Nebraska didn't touch the ball again.
