Volleyball - North Platte Triangular

The No. 3 Nebraska volleyball team swept Michigan State 25-18, 25-23, 25-9&nbsp;on Thursday night at the Breslin Center.&nbsp; The Huskers extended their Big Ten record to 5-0 and moved to 13-1 this season. The Spartans dropped to 10-6 and 1-4 in the Big Ten.&nbsp; <a href="https://huskers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=43951">Bekka Allick</a>&nbsp;had eight kills and three blocks and hit .636 to pace the Huskers to a .358 hitting percentage as a team.&nbsp;<a href="https://huskers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=44234">Madi Kubik</a>&nbsp;posted&nbsp;eight kills, and&nbsp;<a href="https://huskers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=44235">Whitney Lauenstein</a>&nbsp;also had eight kills to go with four blocks and a .462 hitting percentage.&nbsp; <a href="https://huskers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=43957">Kaitlyn Hord</a>&nbsp;connected for six kills on .500 hitting with a match-high six blocks. Another kill by Krause gave NU a seven-point lead, 16-9, and the Huskers led by seven at 20-13 after kills by Allick and Kubik. But Michigan State got a kill by Moore and back-to-back aces by Jayhlin Swain to pull within 20-16. After a timeout, Kubik and Krause answered with kills to restore a 22-16 lead, and Allick and Hord produced two more for set point at 24-17. A Michigan State service error gave NU a 25-18 win. The Huskers hit .565 in the set, a season best. Michigan State hit .094.&nbsp; Set 2:&nbsp;The Huskers went up 10-6 after back-to-back kills by Krause and Hord. But a Husker service error was followed by Michigan State's fifth ace of the match, and the Spartans rallied to tie the set at 11-11. Another kill by the senior All-American, followed by another from Krause and a Spartan hitting error made it 19-16 Huskers. The Huskers hung on to a one-point lead at 20-19 when Hord smashed a kill from the middle, and Lauenstein terminated a bump set from Rodriguez for a 22-19 lead. Then Lauenstein hammered down an overpass to make it 23-19, and the Spartans took a timeout. Michigan State answered with three straight points to get within 23-22, and NU used a timeout. Lauenstein earned set point for the Big Red, and the Huskers clinched the 25-23 win on Lauenstein's&nbsp;seventh kill of the match.&nbsp; Set 3:&nbsp;Knuckles opened set three with back-to-back aces, and Hord and Kubik stuffed a Michigan State attack to make it 3-0. Huskers take down Michigan State, 3-0

The Knights quelled the Storm during a road game in Beatrice Thursday night.

North Platte Community College faced off with Southeast Community College and won in four sets. The final scores were: 20-25, 25-13, 25-16 and 25-19.

Morgan Ramsey led the team with 19 kills. Emily Johnson added another eight, and Avah Steggall notched four more in addition to coming through with 33 assists.

On the defensive side, Whitney Chintala went for 24 digs, Amauri Browning had 23 and Tessa Metschke tallied 14. Browning also put down four aces.

“This was a big win for us for region standings and just as a team,” said NPCC volleyball head coach Alexa McCall. “We really picked up our serving and passing in the second set, and that helped our offense and allowed our middles to get involved. We have a big weekend, and this was a good start for us.”

The Knights have two days of doubleheaders coming up in Columbus. They will take on Kansas City Kansas Community College at 5 p.m. Friday and will follow that with a 7 p.m. game against Cowley County Community College.

Action continues Saturday with matches at 1 p.m. against Dakota College at Bottineau and 3 p.m. versus Neosho County Community College.

North Platte, Neb. – North Platte High Schools Head Volleyball Coach Clancy Hammond announced today that she would immediately step down as the NPHS Head Volleyball Coach. Mrs. Hammond shared that she needed to step away from her role with the team due to personal responsibilities.

Jimmie Rhodes, Director of NPHS Activities, stated that he appreciates the support Mrs. Hammond has provided to the team this year and wishes her the best. Additionally, he added, ‘after meeting with the coaching staff; we have decided to complete the year with our current staff sharing co-leadership responsibility. Rhodes shared, ‘coaches Blake and Frey will serve as Interim Co-Head Coaches for the remainder of the 2022 volleyball season.’

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Russell Wilson had his most productive day with the Broncos, but it wasn't enough to overcome numerous mistakes and an awful third quarter by Denver's offense in a 32-23 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday.

“I thought we battled in a tough environment. ... I thought we did some really great things in the first half, we really executed well and made some big plays,” said Wilson, who completed 17 of 25 passes for 237 yards and two touchdowns. “And then in the third quarter, we hurt ourselves.”

The Broncos' totals for that quarter: 11 offensive plays for 7 yards over three possessions, all of which ended in punts.

To its credit, Denver’s defense responded by limiting the Raiders to one field goal in the third quarter. But the offense couldn't stay on the field.

Denver, which came into the game converting 37% of its third downs, was a dismal 3 for 11 (27%) on Sunday, with seven of those attempts coming on third-and-8 or longer.

“You don’t want to be in those situations,” Wilson said. “It’s a game of trying to stay on schedule, obviously. Especially going against a good team and tough rivalry. If we could just stay on schedule in those situations, we’ll give ourselves a really good chance.

“I think the biggest thing is that the third quarter, we kind of hurt ourselves — that’s the game.”

The Broncos also wasted three opportunities with good field position — twice in the second quarter when they kicked a field goal and when Melvin Gordon III fumbled, leading to a touchdown by Raiders cornerback Amik Robertson — and once in the third quarter.

“We set ourselves back,” receiver Courtland Sutton said. “Yes, we had those times in the game where we had prime field position and we took advantage of a couple of those. We didn’t take advantage of all of them, we took advantage of a couple of them. But the times that we’re starting on the 25, we gotta go put a job together. We can’t go out there and have a hold on first down, hold on second down. Those are the things that are taking us off schedule.”

Denver, which came into the game with a league-high 30 penalties for 236 yards, was penalized seven times for 50 yards.

Despite their miscues, turnovers, penalties, and finishing with less than 300 yards of offense for a second straight game, the Broncos made it close late. Wilson ran for a 3-yard touchdown that cut the Raiders’ lead to 25-23 after torching the Raiders’ secondary with a 55-yard pass to KJ Hamler on the previous play.

Wilson joined Tom Brady, Matt Ryan, Aaron Rodgers, Matthew Stafford and Joe Flacco as active quarterbacks to reach the 38,000-yard mark. Sutton caught five passes for 52 yards and a touchdown and is off to the best start of his career with 24 receptions and 343 yards through four games.

But Denver couldn't stop the Raiders' Josh Jacobs, who finished with a career-high 144 yards rushing and two touchdowns, including a 7-yard scamper with 2:07 left that put the game away.

“We’ll have to study the film, figure out where we can get better. I think it’s gonna be simple,” Wilson said. “Just try to stay away from penalties, and staying on schedule. That’s probably the biggest part of this game, and then just keep believing each other.”

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.-In a night that began with the Annual Bulldog Backyard Barbecue, the North Platte High School Bulldogs made sure it was one that all fans would remember.

The Dawgs faced the Class A number one ranked Omaha Westside Warriors at Bauer Field in a four-quarter thriller that ended with a 21-17 upset victory.

Significant changes are coming for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s athletic department after the Nebraska Board of Regents passed three proposals at its meeting on Friday.

All three proposals passed unanimously on 7-0 votes. The regents normally have eight voters, but Regent Barbara Weitz of Omaha was not present at Friday’s meeting for family matters.

“We feel very, very comfortable with this proposal moving forward as a pilot the next couple of years,” said UNL Chancellor Ronnie Green.

The alcohol sales are not finalized, however. Because Pinnacle Bank Arena is owned by the City of Lincoln, the city council will need to give a final stamp of approval. A city spokesperson said the council will vote at its meeting on Monday, October 24. Under the trial run, the city will get 90% of the net revenue from sales.

Baxter Arena, where the University of Nebraska at Omaha plays hockey, already sells beers – as do the baseball and softball facilities at UNO. Regent Jim Pillen of Columbus asked UNO’s Chancellor Joanne Li if her campus has had fan behavior problems.

“We have not seen any behavior that is of concern at this point,” she said.

The sales at the arena may only be just the beginning at UNL. Memorial Stadium could be a possibility in the future. The stadium sold beers at a Garth Brooks concert in August 2021. But that’s a different proposal for a different day, said Regent Rob Schaffer of Beatrice.

“This is something that requires all patrons of the game to be accountable,” said regent Tim Clare of Lincoln. “I would just encourage that amongst the fans that are in attendance.”

Only one Nebraskan made a public comment at the meeting. David Fulton of Pleasanton, a small town north of Kearney, said nothing good comes from a can or bottle. He used the Brooks concert as an example.

“It wasn’t a pretty picture,” Fulton said. “I was very glad that we had chosen not to take any of our grandchildren to that concert.”

Regent Bob Phares of North Platte, the chair of the board, said another Nebraskan had submitted written testimony.

Pillen, also the Republican nominee for governor, said the board consulted security experts, who said fans binge drink less when they have access at stadiums.

Multimedia rights and stadium renovations

The company that now holds UNL’s multimedia rights agreement also works with Michigan State University and University of Maryland athletics. Previously, the athletic department worked with Learfield IMG for 16 years. After the pandemic disrupted collegiate sports, UNL took their broadcasting rights in-house in March 2021.

But running the broadcasting in-house didn’t quite do it for Pillen. He said a 7-year option in the project provides flexibility. So too does “the ability to more fully engage on Nebraskans across the planet” with the new agreement.

While a price tag for Memorial Stadium renovations have not been released by Trev Alberts, the athletic director said a redevelopment of the south end zone, concession areas and concourse are likely for the project.

“See yourself at the top row of South Stadium and you have to go to the restroom. It’s a long ways down to get a pop, go to the restroom or anything,” said Regent Paul Kenney of Amherst. “You got to think about the fans there.”

The regents took their meeting on road Friday, meeting from the University of Nebraska at Kearney. Normally, the board meets at Varner Hall, just south of UNL’s East Campus in Lincoln.

UNK Chancellor Doug Kristensen and NU system President Carter praised recent developments at the Kearney campus, particularly the&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskapublicmedia.org/ar/news/news-articles/board-of-regents-approve-rural-health-care-complex-at-unk-carter-gets-extension/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">rural health facilities</a>&nbsp;and a&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskapublicmedia.org/en/news/news-articles/unk-launches-new-admission-program-for-nursing-students-to-meet-rural-needs/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">new nursing program</a>&nbsp;that university leaders hope fill needed healthcare workers in central and western Nebraska.

The next NU Board of Regents meeting is scheduled for Dec. 2, 2022 in Lincoln.

NU Regents approve pilot program to sell alcohol at basketball games

NPCC hosted Southeast Community College Wednesday night and lost in 5 sets.&nbsp;

Set one started neck and neck until the Knights took the lead and won 25-21. &nbsp;

SCC won the first point of set two. The Knights fought back and doubled the score to 8-4. NPCC kept the lead and won set two at 25-17.&nbsp;

Set three started back and forth. SCC brought the score to a tie and took the lead with 8-9. The Knights brought the score back to a tie and took the lead at 10-9. SCC fought back again and took the lead to win the set with a score of 18-25. &nbsp;

SCC took the first point in set four. After a back-and-forth of service errors, SCC took the lead and won the set with a score of 15-25. &nbsp;

Set five saw a back and forth between the two teams. SCC took the lead at 9-10 and kept it to take the win at 10-15. &nbsp;

Sophomore Morgan Ramsey led the game with 16 kills and four aces, followed by Freshman Tyrah Woods with 12 kills. Freshmen Whitney Chintala and Amauri Browning contributed 26 and 18 digs respectively. &nbsp;

This puts the Knights at 6-14 overall and 0-2 conference on the season. SCC is now 5-18 overall and 1-2 conference. &nbsp;

Up next: The Knights will be at home again this weekend hosting the NPCC Triangular. They will face Otero College at 11 a.m. and Northeast Community College at 3 p.m. in the McDonald-Belton Gym. The Knights will rematch SCC on Oct. 6 in Beatrice, Neb. &nbsp;

The Knights brought the score back to a tie and took the lead at 10-9. SCC fought back again and took the lead to win the set with a score of 18-25. &nbsp;SCC took the first point in set four. After a back-and-forth of service errors, SCC took the lead and won the set with a score of 15-25. &nbsp;Set five saw a back and forth between the two teams. SCC took the lead at 9-10 and kept it to take the win at 10-15. &nbsp;Sophomore Morgan Ramsey led the game with 16 kills and four aces, followed by Freshman Tyrah Woods with 12 kills. Freshmen Whitney Chintala and Amauri Browning contributed 26 and 18 digs respectively. &nbsp;This puts the Knights at 6-14 overall and 0-2 conference on the season. DENVER (AP) — Jamal Murray spotted his two-time reigning MVP teammate in the open and quickly hollered out to him.

"Grab me a grape,” the Denver Nuggets point guard said with Nikola Jokic breaking toward a fruit tray Monday at media day.

With that, Jokic dished out his first assist of the season.

Jokic will have his supporting cast back and healthy this season, with Murray feeling “night and day” better after missing all last year as he recovered from an ACL injury. Michael Porter Jr., too, after being limited to just nine games a year ago due to a balky back.

With the trade for Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and the signing of Bruce Brown, along with the growth of high-energy guard Bones Hyland, the Nuggets have high aspirations this season — even if they shy away from voicing it out loud.

“We know what we want to do,” said Brown, whose team begins training camp Tuesday in San Diego. “So it doesn’t need to be said.”

It all starts in the middle with Jokic, who signed a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/denver-nuggets-nba-sports-basketball-c362b97f3d8d23b2c18b869e9278f249">supermax extension in the offseason</a>. He's trying to join the company of Larry Bird, Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain as players who won the MVP trophy three straight seasons.

One area the Nuggets want to see him raise to another level — his vocal game.

“Everybody is waiting for him to say something,” Nuggets coach Michael Malone said. “And when he does it has a profound impact.”

The quiet leader wants to be the “Tim Duncan of the Denver Nuggets,” Jokic said. “But I need win a couple of championships to be him.”

He's got the crew around him to make a run.

Shortly after acquiring Aaron Gordon in March 2021, the Nuggets showed flashes of what they could do with a lineup consisting of Gordon, Murray, Porter and Jokic. They went 4-1 before Murray tore his ACL at Golden State. Last season, they lost Porter after the outside threat&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nba-sports-michael-porter-jr-jamal-murray-nikola-jokic-fe7764c78e82b3ee90e360cc6b0d5dba">underwent another procedure on his back</a>.

“I’m looking to build a chemistry with that,” said Gordon, whose team lost to the NBA champion Golden State Warriors in the first round last season. “It’s going to be nice to figure out ... the flow of the game and who gets what, where and when, the how and why — we've still got to put all those questions together. It’s going be fun.”

Especially with Murray looking more like his old self.

"He’s got that confidence back. He’s got that swagger back,” Malone said. “Seeing him in our gym, playing with that confidence and chirping, has been fun to watch.”

Murray's not putting expectations on his return. The Nuggets have missed the playoff version of Murray, who had two 50-point bursts in 2020 when the Nuggets made it to the Western Conference Finals.

“I’ve been taking one day at a time and everybody’s always asking me what’s it going to look like two months from now. I don’t know,” Murray said. “I’m on the right road.”

“Injuries, it just takes time, I would say, to have joy in the game again, no soreness or anything,” Porter said. “It’s good to be on the other side of it. I’m here now and I don’t have any limitations. I’m excited."

In July, the Nuggets picked up Caldwell-Pope and Ish Smith from Washington for Monte Morris and Will Barton. Caldwell-Pope is looking forward to working with Jokic, who is known for his no-look passes.

“So I will keep my eyes on him at all times,” Caldwell-Pope cracked.

To develop team chemistry, Jeff Green hosted an offseason camp in Miami for the younger players. In addition, Gordon had teammates over to his place for hoops and then some paintball.

"Both returning and new players and veterans understand the importance and the opportunity that we have,” Malone said. “You don’t want to waste that opportunity.”

Nuggets center DeAndre Jordan will wear No. 6 to honor the late Russell. It's a number that has been retired by the NBA, but&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nba-sports-bill-russell-lebron-james-national-basketball-players-association-f4d1eda4268a874010b49311679e75c2">players who have worn it in the past are</a>&nbsp;permitted to do so.

“Bill Russell was a great pioneer for not only the game of basketball but for off-the-floor things as well,” Jordan said.

Jack White, a 6-foot-7 forward from Australia, has been winning 3-point shooting contests in practice over the summer.

“I haven’t stepped into that yet,” Caldwell-Pope said of the contests. “For now he is.... I’m looking forward to competing — and taking the top spots.”

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — With Memorial Stadium on the cusp of its 100th anniversary, the Nebraska athletic department on Thursday set the stage for a massive renovation that will make the venue more fan friendly for decades to come.

University leaders also announced a new multimedia rights deal that would bring in more than $300 million over 15 years and said that alcohol would be sold at men's and women's basketball games at Pinnacle Bank Arena starting this season.

The athletic department must get approval from the university Board of Regents, who are expected to approve the plans. The next board meeting is Sept. 30.

Nebraska is scheduled to open a $160 million football facility next year, and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-nfl-entertainment-sports-basketball-4b4daca65e3359ef8ca94f893e4c46e9">the Big Ten's billion-dollar-a-year media rights deal</a>&nbsp;announced this summer will bring unprecedented windfalls to league members.

The announcements came less than two weeks after Nebraska began its search for a new football coach following the firing of Scott Frost. Athletic director Trev Alberts said discussions about stadium upgrades and the rights deal have been going on for months and that the timing is coincidental.

“I’m not naive to perhaps the benefit of potential candidates saying, wow, in spite of some of our challenges in terms of wins and losses on the field, there’s a lot of momentum happening at the University of Nebraska,” Alberts said. “If that's an unintended benefit, we'll take it.”

The Cornhuskers have played in Memorial Stadium since 1923 and incremental improvements have been made over the years, including luxury suites in 1999 and an expansion to more than 85,000 seats in 2013.

A redevelopment of the south end zone area, concession areas and concourses as well as improvements in digital infrastructure are likely, Alberts said. He had no cost estimate or timetable for the project.

The athletic department received about 22,000 responses to a survey on what amenities fans would like in order to improve the stadium experience, Alberts said, and that feedback will be used in the decision-making process.

Alberts noted the football team continues to get strong fan support even though it has not had a winning season since 2016. The school has an NCAA-record 385-game sellout streak that began in 1962.

“We stick together through all kinds of weather,” Alberts said, quoting the school fight song. “I think the fans have stuck with us through some pretty nasty storms. I think it’s time for us to do our part.”

The athletic department's multimedia rights agreement with Playfly Sports would take effect Oct. 1. The deal guarantees $301 million over 15 years, or about $18.2 million annually. Playfly currently holds the multimedia rights for Southern California, LSU and Virginia, among other schools.

As part of the package, Alberts said, Playfly would contribute $1 million to name, image and likeness programs each of the first two years and additional undetermined amounts in following years.
