District B-6 Track Meet in Ogallala (5/11)

Four members of the Mid-Plains Community College Rodeo Team have punched their tickets for the College National Finals Rodeo.

They are: Jacob Haren in the tie-down roping and team roping; Jentri Hurlburt and Barrett Schlieker in the team roping and Koby Jacobson in the bull riding.

Haren ended the season as the Great Plains Region reserve champion header and tie-down roper. It will be the first time that he, Hurlburt and Schlieker compete at the CNFR and the fourth consecutive trip for Jacobson.

MPCC finishes the year third in the men’s team standings, with a 151-point margin, and sixth in the women’s team standings.

Haren placed third in the men’s regional all-around standings with his respective reserve championships in tie-down and team roping. Nick Rettinger, Schlieker and Jacobson also earned placings in the year-end all-around standings by garnering over 200 points in two events throughout the season.

Some of Haren’s teammates made it onto the regional leaderboard in team roping as well. Hurlburt is fourth in heading. On the heeling side, Schlieker is fifth and Rex Day is seventh.

Jacobson is third in the region in bull riding.

Regionally in the steer wrestling, Quade Potter is fifth, Rettinger is sixth, Kaden Wooters is seventh, Haren is eighth, Schlieker is ninth and Jacobson is 10th.

“I'm over the moon excited for our four CNFR qualifiers,” said Wyatt Clark MPCC Rodeo Team timed event coach. “They all compete at a level to bring home national championships. We will be well-represented at the CNFR in June.”

The results come after the final competition of the regular season – the Great Plains Region Rodeo, hosted by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Rodeo Association Friday and Saturday in Lincoln.

MPCC’s men’s team took the championship with 575 points.

Haren claimed the men’s all-around title after winning the tie-down roping and placing fourth and sixth, respectively, in the team roping and steer wrestling.

He won the team roping in the long-go alongside roping partner Riley Staton, of Black Hills State University. The duo stretched their steer to a time of 9 seconds flat. Haren also finished second in the long-go in tie-down roping with a time of 10.4 seconds.

Hurlburt and Schlieker were second in the team roping, followed by Dalton Kunkee and his brother Weston Kunkee, of Mitchell Technical College, who ended up fifth. The Kunkees were also third in the long-go in the team roping.

Wooters came in second in the steer wrestling for Mid-Plains. He won the event in the long-go after throwing his steer to a time of 4.9 seconds.

In the breakaway roping, Andrea Meyer was third in both the long-go and the average. Her long-go time was 2.8 seconds. Hollenbeck followed her at 10th in the average.

Rettinger was eighth in the tie-down roping.

“I am extremely proud of everyone that competed this year,” said Aukai Kaai, MPCC Rodeo Team roughstock coach. “They gave it their all and it showed. I’m excited to see Koby qualify back to the CNFR for a fourth time. He’ll be a veteran and knows what it’ll take to do well there. I’m looking for big things to come from him and the rest of the Mid-Plains kids.”

“I'm very proud of our team’s performance in Lincoln – a great way to end the season with a men’s team championship,” Clark said. “The men’s team was within grasp of qualifying a six-man team to the CNFR with that performance but came up just short.”

The CNFR will be the next competition for Mid-Plains. It is scheduled for June 12-18 in Casper, Wyo.&nbsp;

Four MPCC Rodeo Team members qualify for nationals

North Platte Catholic Schools announce Brad Braithwait and Maddy Krebs will serve as Co-Athletic Directors. “These two individuals have been heavily involved with our school over the last few years.” Superintendent Kevin Dodson stated. “They know our Irish community, our coaching staff, and our student athletes. I’m confident they will do an amazing job overseeing all aspects of our athletic programs here at St. Pat’s.” "Brad and Maddy have a strong faith and share a great passion for our Irish athletics."

Brathwait is a 2001 graduate of Arapahoe High School. He played basketball under Coach Kevin O’Connor at Mid-Plains Community College and earned his Associates of Science degree in 2003. He continued basketball under Coach Tom Kropp at UNK the 2003-04 season and graduated from the University of Nebraska at Kearney with degrees in K-12 Health/Physical Education and 7-12 English in 2007. He student taught at St Patrick’s High School in 2007 and took a position as an assistant coach for Irish football, which he still holds today. Braithwait was employed as an elementary PE teacher for North Platte Public Schools for three years until he accepted his current position as a Sophomore English teacher and 7-12 Health, Physical Education, and Weightlifting teacher at North Platte Catholic Schools in 2011.

Besides being an assistant football coach for the Irish for the last 14 years, Braithwait was the assistant girls basketball coach for 12 seasons (2009-2021) and head boys’ track coach for ten seasons (2010-2020). In the spring of 2021, he helped pioneer the MSP baseball team as an assistant coach and continues in that position. This is he first high school baseball team west of Brad is married to Jessica Braithwait and together have three children, Jaxon (13), Braylon (11), and Mylah (4) who all attend North Platte Catholic Schools. 

Krebs graduated in 2008 from St. Pat’s High School. She attended North Platte Community College for two years. She then attended Peru State College where she graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. After receiving her Bachelor’s Degree, she continued her education and received her Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Peru State College. 

Krebs taught at North Platte Public Schools in both 2nd and 3rd grades for 5 years before taking time off to stay home with her children. 

In 2020 she was hired on as North Platte Catholic Schools Head Volleyball Coach and continues to hold that title. She currently works at St. Pat’s High School in the Activities Department.

She is the owner of North Platte Jazzercise.

 Flatrock Classic Youth Baseball Tournament Results

The North Platte Community College Softball Team dropped its final game of the Region IX Championship Sunday in Columbus. The 9-5 win went to Southeast Community College.

The Storm took an early lead in the first inning and used six runs in the third inning to hold onto it for good.

Taelyn Dakamas was on the rubber for the Knights. The righty lasted four innings, allowing nine hits and nine runs while striking out two and walking one. Jenny Singer threw two innings in relief out of the bullpen.

The Knights tallied 10 hits altogether. Dakamas, Kelsey Woodhouse, Elena Montoya and Jayden Horner all managed multiples - Horner, Dakamas, Montoya and Woodhouse led with two apiece.

“We battled hard all year long - we just couldn’t get everyone healthy all season,” said NPCC Head Softball Coach Janelle Higgins. “These young ladies should be very proud of themselves as they fought hard all weekend and left it all on the field. I am very proud of the grit and fight they had with all the obstacles and injuries we faced all season.”

The game brings the softball season to a close for the Knights. They ended their regular season with a record of 5-32.

Jenny Singer threw two innings in relief out of the bullpen.</p><p>The Knights tallied 10 hits altogether. Dakamas, Kelsey Woodhouse, Elena Montoya and Jayden Horner all managed multiples - Horner, Dakamas, Montoya and Woodhouse led with two apiece.</p><figure>

                    </figure><p>“We battled hard all year long - we just couldn’t get everyone healthy all season,” said NPCC Head Softball Coach Janelle Higgins. “These young ladies should be very proud of themselves as they fought hard all weekend and left it all on the field. I am very proud of the grit and fight they had with all the obstacles and injuries we faced all season.”</p><p>The game brings the softball season to a close for the Knights. They ended their regular season with a record of 5-32.</p>

Area Sports: Dave Blevins Memorial Track Meet in Arnold (5/6)

The North Platte Community College
 Softball Team got off to a strong start in game 1 defeating Southeast Community College 6-5.&nbsp; Though fell in the second game to number 1 seeded Central Community College 3-1. 

The Knights got out to an early lead going up 6 runs through the first three innings. Though Southeast Community College rallied in the 4th and 5th innings to get the game to within one. The comeback was unsuccessful in the end as the Knights came out on top 6-5.

In Game 2 Taelyn Dakamas got the start again and went 7 full innings only giving up 3 runs as the Knights fell 3-1 to Central Community College.

The Knights got on the board first with Cameron Rollison grounding out to first getting a run home. Though Central Community College pulled away in the fourth inning scoring two runs and getting the victory.

game will face-off against Central in a championship round at 1 p.m.

Kayla Pope, Diamond Moore-Heath, Jada Ballard and Janay Brauer signed to continue their athletic careers on Wednesday afternoon.

“I could not be prouder of these four young women,” said head coach Jeff Thurman. “What they have accomplished here at NPCC is nothing short of outstanding. Four championships and four degrees during their time here is a product of the work they put in the classroom and on the court.”

Pope was a focal point of the offense for the Knights over the past two seasons. The Mesquite, Texas native concludes her Knights career ranked seventh all-time in scoring, while breaking the school record with 117 made free throws during the 2021-22 season. Pope will look to display her talents on the court at Allen University in Columbia, S.C. next year.

Moore-Heath was a dominating post presence for the Knights during her two-year career. Her performance on the court earned her recognition as the top player in the Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference, while posting 14 double-doubles during the 2021-22 campaign. Moore-Heath closes out her Knights career ranked 10th all-time in scoring. The Colorado Springs, Colo. native will continue her career at Western New Mexico University in Silver City, N.M.

Ballard finished her sophomore campaign averaging 5.3 points per game in 29 starts for the Knights. Her defensive pressure was a threat for opposing offenses, as her 70 steals helped the Knights seal some tight wins down the stretch of the 2021-22 season. The native of St. Petersburg, Fla. will continue her career at Carolina University in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Brauer had her best season in a Knights uniform during the 2021-22 season. The third-year sophomore averaged a career best 11.9 points per game, while breaking the school record with 93 made three-point field goals over the course of the 2021-22 season. Brauer currently ranks third all-time in scoring and will continue her athletic career at Dickinson State University, in Dickinson, N.D.

“Each one of these student-athletes deserves this opportunity. They will be successful moving forward because they all are amazing individuals,” said Thurman. “I am excited to see them begin their new journey.”

The Boys Class D State Golf Tournament will be held May&nbsp;24 and 25.

It takes a small army of volunteers to host a championship event for these boys! 

Volunteering involves a five to eight-hour job where you will be assisting the participants with recording their strokes, watching tee shots, looking for lost balls, communicating scores, and more.

Lunch will be provided along with a complimentary NSAA jacket.<br>

Scott Frost will not be allowed to perform his coaching duties for five consecutive days this football season as part of Nebraska’s negotiated settlement with the NCAA for allowing an unauthorized staff member to do hands-on special teams coaching in 2020. The NCAA said Frost failed to monitor former special teams analyst Jonathan Rutledge’s activities. Rutledge was found to work directly with players during special teams drills and assist or make tactical decisions in games. Among other penalties are a $10,000 fine, probation through April 2023 and removal of non-coaching staff members from practice or competition for five days.

Huskers hit with NCAA penalties under Frost

Cornhusker Cup champion Mason Gerdes had a strategy for shooting in the blustery winds of the 52nd&nbsp;Cornhusker Trap Shoot on Saturday in Doniphan, Nebraska.

“Shoot ’em fast, shoot ’em quick right out of the trap,” the Raymond Central 11th&nbsp;grader said. “Just don’t let it bother you and focus on the next one.”

On a day that saw shooters battle wind gusts of more than 40 mph at the home grounds of the Nebraska Trapshooting Association, Gerdes excelled. He broke 65 of 75 handicap targets from 24 yards Saturday. Combine that with Friday’s 71 at 16 yards for a winning 136 score. Cooper Koeppen of Malcom 4-H was the next closest at 133.

“I thought I was in a pretty good position when I came back today,” said Gerdes, who has been competing at the Cornhusker since the sixth grade. “I knew I had to do something pretty good to get to the top and I went out with my head straight and shot 65 of them and ended up at the top.”

Millard West repeated as overall high school team champion with the same five shooters as last year. Peyton Anderson, Drake Pietryga, Ben Wilweding, Aiden Alward and Brandon Fish finished with a 594 out of a possible 750.

Janice Tejeda of Ashland 4-H was the ladies’ champion, while Raymond Central Gold was the ladies’ team champion and Louisville 4-H Gold was the top 4-H team.

                    </figure><p>By NEBRASKA GAME AND PARKS</p><p>Cornhusker Cup champion Mason Gerdes had a strategy for shooting in the blustery winds of the 52nd&nbsp;Cornhusker Trap Shoot on Saturday in Doniphan, Nebraska.</p><p>“Shoot ’em fast, shoot ’em quick right out of the trap,” the Raymond Central 11th&nbsp;grader said. “Just don’t let it bother you and focus on the next one.”</p><p>On a day that saw shooters battle wind gusts of more than 40 mph at the home grounds of the Nebraska Trapshooting Association, Gerdes excelled. He broke 65 of 75 handicap targets from 24 yards Saturday. Combine that with Friday’s 71 at 16 yards for a winning 136 score. Cooper Koeppen of Malcom 4-H was the next closest at 133.</p><p>“I thought I was in a pretty good position when I came back today,” said Gerdes, who has been competing at the Cornhusker since the sixth grade. “I knew I had to do something pretty good to get to the top and I went out with my head straight and shot 65 of them and ended up at the top.”</p><p>Millard West repeated as overall high school team champion with the same five shooters as last year. Peyton Anderson, Drake Pietryga, Ben Wilweding, Aiden Alward and Brandon Fish finished with a 594 out of a possible 750.</p><p>Janice Tejeda of Ashland 4-H was the ladies’ champion, while Raymond Central Gold was the ladies’ team champion and Louisville 4-H Gold was the top 4-H team.</p><p>Results from Saturday’s senior high competition are:</p><p>&nbsp;Overall</p><p>Top 10 Individuals –&nbsp;1. Raymond Central’s Gerdes wins Cornhusker Cup

Mitchell Pierson of Lincoln Southeast survived an eight-person shoot-off Friday to win the individual title in the 16-yard competition at the 52nd&nbsp;Cornhusker Trap Shoot at Doniphan, Nebraska.

Pierson and seven others each broke all 75 targets earlier, then, in the shoot-off, the champion failed to miss.

Scotlyn Kincaid of Papillion-La Vista won the ladies’ title after a three-person shoot-off after shooting a 73 earlier. The high school team crown went to Papillion-La Vista, which broke 358 of 375 targets. Malcom 4-H Blue won the 4-H team title with a 359 and Duchesne won the ladies’ team crown with a 323.

There were 1,524 shooters competing Friday. On Saturday, competitors will shoot 75 handicap targets. The high school shooter with the highest combined score from the two days will earn the Cornhusker Cup trophy as the overall champion.

Pierson is individual champion at 16 yards at Cornhusker Trap Shoot

Wyatt Happle of Beatrice was perfect Thursday, breaking all 100 targets during the junior high competition of the 52nd&nbsp;Cornhusker Trap Shoot in Doniphan, Nebraska.

It was no runaway victory for Happle shooting targets at 16 yards at the Nebraska Trapshooting Association home grounds. It was a day of high scores.

Harry Morgan of Kiewit Middle School in Omaha shot a 99. Kahne Packer of 5 Clovers 4-H of Wilber, who finished runner-up last year, took third place with a 98.

The last junior high shooter to record a perfect score was Hayden Baehr of 5 Clovers 4-H in 2015.

Sara Thiellen of Ashland 4-H won a shoot-off over Ava Schmutte of Norris, after both shot 95s, to win the ladies’ competition. Norris 1 repeated as the junior high team champion while Lincoln’s St. Joseph won the 4-H team championship and Ashland 4-H 1 took the ladies’ team crown.

On Thursday, 935 junior high shooters registered to compete, the second-highest total in the history of the event.

On Friday, more than 1,500 senior high students are expected to shoot 75 rounds of 16-yard targets. They will shoot 75 handicap targets Saturday, and the combined scores of the two days will determine the overall champion, the Cornhusker Cup winner.

Area Sports: Paxton track and field invite results (4/21) 

Cam Chick and Griffin Everitt homered and the Husker bullpen pitched 5.1 scoreless innings in Nebraska's 4-3 win vs. North Dakota State at Hawks Field on Wednesday night.

Nebraska (14-21) scored four runs on seven hits and an error, while NDSU (21-12) had three runs with seven hits and an error.

Starter Dawson McCarville pitched the first 3.2 innings, allowing three runs on five hits and a pair of walks. CJ Hood made his 13th appearance on the season, tossing 1.1 hitless innings in relief to earn his first collegiate win. Chandler Benson, Tyler Martin and Corbin Hawkins pitched the next 2.2 innings, while Braxton Bragg threw the final 1.1 innings and posted four strikeouts to pick up his fourth save on the season.

Everitt led the Huskers at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double, home run and two RBI. Chick reached base in all four plate appearances with a solo home run and being hit by the pitch three times. Chick is the first Husker to homer in three consecutive games since Scott Schreiber in 2018 and is the first Husker to be hit by the pitch three times in a game since Kale Kiser vs. Oklahoma State on April 3, 2011.

Josh Caron had a double and Garrett Anglim and Max Anderson tallied a single each to round out the hitting for the Husker offense.

North Dakota State plated the game's first run in the second after Cadyn Schwabe's RBI single up the middle scored Jack Simonsen.

The Huskers responded in the bottom half of the inning when Everitt lifted the first pitch over the wall in right to lead off the second for Nebraska with a solo homer to tie the game.

The Bison answered with a hit by pitch, followed by a two-run blast by Druw Sackett to left to give NDSU a 3-1 lead in the third. 

Chick brought the Huskers back within one with a two-out solo shot to center in the third, his sixth of the season. Back-to-back singles by Anglim and Anderson put runners on first and second, before Everitt smacked an RBI double down the right field line to bring home Anglim and Anderson to give the Huskers a 4-3 lead after three innings.

NDSU threatened in the seventh with runners on first and third with two outs, but Hawkins replaced Martin on the mound and drew a flyout to right on an 0-1 pitch to hold the one-run lead for the Huskers.

Bragg took the mound with two outs in the eighth and struck out the four Bison hitters he faced to secure the 4-3 win for the Big Red on Wednesday night.

Nebraska steps back into conference play this weekend, as the Huskers venture to Bloomington, Ind., for a three-game series at Indiana on Friday-Sunday, April 22-24.
