This recall involves all Stanley Switchback and Trigger Action stainless steel travel mugs sold in the United States, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The recalled double-walled mugs were sold in a variety of colors including white, black and green, in 12 oz., 16 oz. and 20 oz. sizes with a polypropylene lid. The Stanley logo appears on the front and bottom of the mug. The recalled mugs have one of the following product identification numbers printed on the bottom of the mug.&nbsp;

These mug's lid threads can shrink when exposed to heat and torque, causing the lid to detach during use, posing a burn hazard.

Stanley recalls travel mugs due to possible burn hazard

On Thursday, the FBI and DHS jointly issued a statement on reported drone sightings in New Jersey:

“We have no evidence at this time that the reported drone sightings pose a national security or public safety threat or have a foreign nexus. The FBI, DHS and our federal partners, in close coordination with the New Jersey State Police, continue to deploy personnel and technology to investigate this situation and confirm whether the reported drone flights are actually drones or are instead manned aircraft or otherwise inaccurate sightings.

“Historically, we have experienced cases of mistaken identity, where reported drones are, in fact, manned aircraft or facilities. We are supporting local law enforcement in New Jersey with numerous detection methods but have not corroborated any of the reported visual sightings with electronic detection. To the contrary, upon review of available imagery, it appears that many of the reported sightings are actually manned aircraft, operating lawfully. There are no reported or confirmed drone sightings in any restricted air space. 

“We take seriously the threat that can be posed by unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), which is why law enforcement and other agencies continue to support New Jersey and investigate the reports. To be clear, they have uncovered no such malicious activity or intent at this stage. While there is no known malicious activity occurring in New Jersey, the reported sightings there do, however, highlight the insufficiency of&nbsp;current authorities."

🎥FBI and DHS issue statement on reported drone sightings

On Thursday President Joseph R. Biden granted clemency consisting of 39 pardons and 1,499 commutations.&nbsp;It's the largest single-day act of clemency in modern history.

The list of the 39 individuals pardoned is below.

Nina Simona Allen is a 49-year-old woman who was convicted of a non-violent offense in her 20s. In the years since, Ms. Allen returned to school to earn a post-baccalaureate degree and two master’s degrees. She now works in the field of education. Ms. Allen strengthens her community by volunteering at a local soup kitchen and at a nursing home. Ms. Allen is described by people who know her as a dependable, hardworking woman of integrity.

KELSIE LYNN BECKLIN – Falcon Heights, Minnesota

Kelsie Lynn Becklin is a 38-year-old woman who pleaded guilty to a non-violent offense at the age of 21. After successfully serving her sentence, Ms. Becklin has furthered her education and recently completed a Ph.D. program. In addition to her graduate program research and academic writing, Ms. Becklin mentors previously incarcerated individuals who also seek to pursue higher education. She is also an active volunteer in her community. Friends and professors attest to her work ethic, dedication, and genuine care for others.

Duran Arthur Brown is a 44-year-old man who pleaded guilty to a non-violent offense. Mr. Brown received early termination of his probationary sentence and has advanced his education and maintained consistent employment in the field of education. Mr. Brown is also a veteran of the U.S. Navy, and during his service, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and several other medals and awards. Following his honorable discharge, Mr. Brown served in the U.S. Navy Reserve. He is described by colleagues as caring and compassionate.

Norman O’Neal Brown is a 56-year-old man who was convicted of non-violent drug offenses when he was 22 years old. If Mr. Brown had been sentenced under current law and today’s sentencing practices, he likely would have received a shorter sentence. After serving over 20 years in prison, President Obama commuted his sentence in 2015. Since then, Mr. Brown has worked with several non-profit organizations, including those focused on rehabilitation, reentry, and justice-impacted youth. Mr. Brown volunteers at several national and community-based organizations that help support incarcerated and formerly-incarcerated people and serves as a board member for a non-profit dedicated to sentencing reform. Family members and colleagues describe Mr. Brown as a man of grace and integrity and an exceptional human being.

ARTHUR LAWRENCE BYRD – Clinton, Maryland

Arthur Lawrence Byrd is a 58-year-old man who pleaded guilty to non-violent offenses at the age of 23. In the years since, Mr. Byrd has been employed as an equipment operator, where he has received various certificates in recognition and appreciation for his work and safety record. He is also active in his church community and contributes to the church’s coat drive and food pantry. People who know him attest to his willingness to help others, his work ethic, and his character.

SARAH JEAN CARLSON – Coon Rapids, Minnesota

Sarah Jean Carlson is a 49-year-old woman who pleaded guilty to a non-violent offense. She received early termination of her probationary sentence. Since then, she has furthered her education and worked in addiction counseling at a faith-based rehabilitation center. Ms. Carlson also volunteers in her local community and at her church. Community members emphasize that Ms. Carlson goes above and beyond to help as many people in crisis as possible.

BRANDON SERGIO CASTROFLAY – Alexandria, Virginia

Brandon Sergio Castroflay is a 49-year-old man who pleaded guilty to non-violent, drug-related offenses at age 21. After successfully completing his sentence, Mr. Castroflay continued his career in the U.S. Army and then went on to work as a civilian for both the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Castroflay received multiple awards related to his work. He also took night classes to earn a bachelor’s degree while also working full-time. Mr. Castroflay volunteers for several charitable organizations that support Gold Star families and wounded service members. Mr. Castroflay has been described as exceptionally hard working, dedicated, and trustworthy by those who know him.

ROSETTA JEAN DAVIS – Colville, Washington

Rosetta Jean Davis is a 60-year-old woman who pleaded guilty to non-violent drug offenses. After successfully serving her sentence, Ms. Davis has maintained steady employment, including by working as a peer supporter for those struggling with substance abuse. Colleagues, family, friends, and neighbors all speak highly of her, citing her hard work, dependability, and willingness to serve as an example of rehabilitation to those with criminal records or who are battling addiction.

Stevoni Wells Doyle is a 47-year-old woman who pleaded guilty to non-violent offenses at the age of 24. After her conviction, she completed a master’s program and has worked as a licensed substance use disorder counselor. She volunteers in her community and fosters animals. Community members describe her as a great mentor and a person of integrity.

GREGORY S. EKMAN – Fountain Valley, California

Gregory S. Ekman is a 58-year-old man who pleaded guilty to a non-violent drug offense at the age of 25. After successfully serving his sentence, Mr. Ekman has maintained consistent employment and has engaged in extensive community service, including with a youth group and with his local church. Friends and associates uniformly praise his character, honesty, and dedication to family. During his U.S. Air Force service, Mr. Ekman received the Training Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, and Air Force Longevity Service Award.

SHANNAN RAE FAULKNER – Muldrow, Oklahoma

Shannan Rae Faulkner is a 56-year-old woman who pleaded guilty to a non-violent drug offense. After successfully serving her sentence, she furthered her education and now works as a counselor and recovery coach with female trauma victims and people with disabilities. Ms. Faulkner also volunteers with organizations dedicated to preventing sexual assault and domestic violence, as well as with local charities. Colleagues attest to her inspirational character, her integrity, and the remarkable impact she makes on the lives of those she helps.

TRYNITHA FULTON – New Orleans, Louisiana

Trynitha Fulton is a 46-year-old woman who pleaded guilty to non-violent offenses she committed when she was 23 years old. Since her conviction, she has earned a master’s degree and worked in the education field. Ms. Fulton also contributes to her community by coaching and volunteering, including for an organization that feeds homeless individuals. She also founded two non-profits dedicated to supporting and helping youth. Ms. Fulton has been described as someone who goes above and beyond for her community.

PAUL JOHN GARCIA – Las Vegas, New Mexico

Paul John Garcia is a 72-year-old man who pleaded guilty to non-violent theft offenses. Since his conviction, he has maintained steady employment in the medical field. Mr. Garcia engages in community service, including with a charity supporting and mentoring youth. Mr. Garcia is a veteran who served in the U.S. Navy, where he received the National Defense Service Medal and other medals and awards. He is known for his extraordinary and compassionate delivery of patient care and his volunteerism.

Kim Douglas Haman is a 75-year-old man who pleaded guilty to non-violent offenses. Mr. Haman is also a veteran of the U.S. Army, where he served in the Vietnam War and earned awards, including the U.S. Army Commendation Medal and the Bronze Star. He was honorably discharged. After his conviction, Mr. Haman worked at a vehicle parts production facility and retired after 16 years of service. Mr. Haman has gained the reputation of being an excellent handyman and a devoted family man who is sincere, honest, and hardworking.

SHERRANDA JANELL HARRIS – Norwalk, Connecticut

Sherranda Janell Harris is a 43-year-old woman who was convicted of a non-violent drug offense when she was 24 years old. In the years since, Ms. Harris has maintained employment in the finance and real estate fields. Ms. Harris is an engaged parent and spends most of her free time with her child. She is also committed to her church and has taken care of fellow parishioners. Ms. Harris has been described as a role model for young women in her community.

TERENCE ANTHONY JACKSON – Seattle, Washington

Terence Anthony Jackson is a 36-year-old man who pleaded guilty to a non-violent drug offense he committed when he was 23 years old. If Mr. Jackson had been sentenced under current law and sentencing practices, he would have likely received a shorter sentence. In the years since his release, Mr. Jackson has worked in the legal industry and is pursuing a degree while he works full-time. In addition to studying, Mr. Jackson has volunteered in his community, including as a barber to children in need. Edwin Allen Jones is a 60-year-old man who pleaded guilty to non-violent drug offenses. Mr. Jones served in the U.S. Army and achieved the rank of Captain before being honorably discharged. Since successfully completing his sentence, Mr. Jones has had a notable legal career. Mr. Jones also participates in local government and volunteers for addiction recovery groups. JAMAL LEE KING – North Ridgeville, Ohio

Jamal Lee King is a 53-year-old man who pleaded guilty to a non-violent offense. Mr. King is a U.S. Army veteran. He received the National Defense Service Medal and several other awards before being honorably discharged. He received early termination of his probationary sentence and has since worked in various jobs. Mr. King contributes to his community through his church and by caring for his elderly neighbors. JERRY DONALD MANNING – Sun Prairie, Wisconsin

Jerry Donald Manning is a 70-year-old man who was convicted of non-violent offenses. Mr. Manning received early termination of his probationary sentence and has since advanced his education and career in aviation. He is active in his community, coaching soccer, attending church, and serving as a bible study teacher. Mr. Manning is a veteran of the U.S. Army. HONI LORI MOORE – Rock Springs, Wyoming

Honi Lori Moore is a 46-year-old woman who committed a non-violent drug offense when she was 19 years old. Since her release, she has maintained consistent employment in the mining industry and has furthered her education by earning certificates. Ms. Moore is a member of two charitable organizations and has provided critical support to individuals in need, including fire safety, rescue, and first aid. Friends, neighbors, and colleagues describe Ms. Moore as honest, courageous, trustworthy, and dependable.

EMILY GOOD NELSON – Indianapolis, Indiana

Emily Good Nelson is a 39-year-old woman who was convicted of non-violent drug offenses when she was 19 years old. Since her release, she completed her bachelor’s and master’s degrees and now works in the healthcare field. She has spoken publicly about drug use and has volunteered as a counselor at an in-patient psychiatric facility. She is described as kind, committed to recovery and helping others, and as someone with tremendous talent and ability.

DENITA NICOLE PARKER – Gaffney, South Carolina

Denita Nicole Parker is a 43-year-old woman who pleaded guilty to a non-violent offense when she was in her 20s. Since her conviction, she has been a dedicated parent to her two children and works full-time. Ms. Parker also volunteers with a charitable organization delivering meals at least two to three times per month, organizes donations for the homeless, and buys holiday gifts for children in her community. She and her husband also started a program that feeds approximately 100 families. Friends, work associates, and neighbors describe Ms. Parker as law-abiding, trustworthy, dependable, and dedicated person.

MICHAEL GARY PELLETIER – Augusta, Maine

Michael Gary Pelletier is a 67-year-old man who pleaded guilty to a non-violent offense. Mr. Pelletier served in the U.S. Coast Guard for 14 years on active duty, where he participated in more than 790 search and rescue operations and saved 32 lives. He also previously worked with the U.S. Secret Service and received several citations and awards for his meritorious service. He was honorably discharged and later served in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve. After his conviction, Mr. Pelletier worked for almost 20 years at a water treatment facility. He volunteered for his county HAZMAT team, assisting first responders at hazardous material spills, accidents, and natural disasters. RUSSELL THOMAS PORTNER – Toutle, Washington

Russell Thomas Portner is a 74-year-old man who pleaded guilty to a non-violent drug offense. Mr. Portner served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged after earning several decorations, including the Bronze Star. Since his conviction, he married, raised four children, operated a successful business, and developed a reputation for charitable generosity and community service. He is currently a member of several veterans organizations. Neighbors, business associates, and friends describe him as trustworthy, loyal, and as a respected businessperson.

NATHANIEL DAVID REED III – San Antonio, Texas

Nathaniel David Reed III is a 46-year-old man who was convicted of non-violent offenses at the age of 21. He served in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years after his conviction, including many overseas deployments, and achieved the rank of Master Sergeant and earned numerous good conduct awards before retiring with an honorable discharge. Mr. Reed has volunteered for numerous causes benefitting both the U.S. Air Force and the civilian community, such as training local firefighters, teaching fire prevention in various settings, and organizing fire prevention weeks. He has also served as a certified sexual assault prevention and response advocate and has used his experience in overcoming the stigma of his conviction to help mentor fellow airmen. GARY MICHAEL ROBINSON – Redmond, Oregon

Gary Michael Robinson is a 70-year-old man who pleaded guilty to a non-violent drug offense. Mr. Robinson is a distinguished U.S. Army veteran. During his service, he earned the National Defense Service Medal and other awards. He was honorably discharged and served as a reservist for several years. Since his conviction, he has built a successful firefighting and habitat preservation business. He volunteers in his community, gives regularly to charity, and is well-regarded by friends and associates. Mr. Robinson is described by those who know him as honest, trustworthy, and professional.

JOSE ANTONIO RODRIGUEZ – Coral Springs, Florida

Jose Antonio Rodriguez is a 55-year-old man who pleaded guilty to a non-violent offense at the age of 26. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy and received several medals and awards for his service, including the U.S. Navy Achievement Medal. Since his conviction, Mr. Rodriguez has started a family, committed himself to higher education, and has maintained employment in the medical field. She also contributes to her community through her church where she serves as a deacon and works in the church’s prison ministry. James Russell Stidd is a 79-year-old man who pleaded guilty to a non-violent offense at the age of 20. After his conviction, he served in the U.S. Air Force until he was honorably discharged at the rank of Sergeant. He reenlisted and served another four years, including during the Vietnam War, and was honorably discharged at the rank of Staff Sergeant. Upon being honorably discharged, Mr. Stidd worked as a contractor and as a road and park maintenance worker. He has participated in various charitable activities through his church and is a member of a disabled veterans organization. Mr. Stidd is described as a man of integrity and honor.

DIANA BAZAN VILLANUEVA – La Grange, Illinois

Diana Bazan Villanueva is a 51-year-old woman who was convicted of a non-violent drug offense in her 20s. In the years since, Ms. Villanueva has been a dedicated mother to her children and has worked in payroll and accounts. Ms. Villanueva also regularly volunteers at school events, fundraisers, and annual autism-related charitable events. Friends and coworkers uniformly praise Ms. Villanueva and describe her as warm, reliable, and always eager to help.

LASHAWN MARRVINIA WALKER – Minneapolis, MinnesotaLashawn Marrvinia Walker is a 51-year-old woman who pleaded guilty to non-violent drug offenses in her 20s. Ms. Walker received early termination of her probationary sentence for her exemplary probation record. Since then, Ms. Walker has worked in the healthcare field, is an engaged parent, and regularly assists others in her community, including during the holidays when she helps serve dinner at a retirement home. People in her community describe Ms. Walker as caring, good-hearted, and responsible. They also note her willingness to meaningfully help others.

MIREYA AIMEE WALMSLEY – La Porte, Texas

Mireya Aimee Walmsley is a 57-year-old woman who was convicted of a non-violent offense at the age of 25. Since her conviction, she has earned an associate’s degree, a nursing license, and a bachelor’s degree. She has maintained steady employment in the healthcare field. Additionally, she has led emergency response teams during several natural disasters (including Hurricanes Katrina, Ike, and Harvey, and Tropical Storm Allison) and spearheaded vaccination efforts during the H1N1 epidemic and COVID-19 pandemic. KIMBERLY JO WARNER – Portville, New York

Kimberly Jo Warner is a 54-year-old woman who pleaded guilty to a non-violent offense. Since her conviction, Ms. Warner earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees and works in the healthcare field. She has volunteered at a non-profit that provides therapeutic services to veterans and first responders and serves as a mentor. LASHUNDRA TENNEAL WILSON – Arlington, Texas

Lashundra Tenneal Wilson is a 49-year-old woman who pleaded guilty to a non-violent offense she committed when she was a teenager. In the years since, Ms. Wilson pursued her education and has worked in the healthcare field. Ms. Wilson gives back to the community by volunteering at community health fairs and raising funds for non-profit health organizations. Lora Nicole Wood is a 39-year-old woman who pleaded guilty to a non-violent drug offense when she was 19 years old. Mr. Yarbrough is a decorated U.S. Air Force veteran who earned a Purple Heart Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal, and over 10 other medals and awards throughout his service. He was honorably discharged after attaining the rank of Captain. Since his conviction, he worked for a shipping company for nearly 30 years. Now retired, he spends much of his time volunteering and is active in his church. LINCOLN —&nbsp;A district judge considering a challenge to void Nebraska’s incoming medical cannabis laws denied a request Wednesday to block them from taking effect this week.

Lancaster County District Judge Susan Strong refused to prevent Gov. Jim Pillen from signing the proclamations by the end of the day on Thursday that would legalize and later regulate&nbsp;<a href="https://sos.nebraska.gov/sites/default/files/doc/elections/2024/2024%20Ballot%20Measures%20Pamphlet.pdf" target="_blank">medical cannabis</a>&nbsp;in Nebraska. Those would be the final steps of the voter-led process.

“I do not feel that there is about to be immediate and irreparable harm to the plaintiff’s interests,” Strong said at a Wednesday hearing. “I also find that the public interest does not favor issuance of the injunction.”

After Strong’s decision, a spokesperson for Pillen confirmed that “the governor will comply with his statutory duty to sign the proclamations by the required deadline.”

The&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2024/12/10/new-lawsuit-seeks-to-void-nebraska-medical-cannabis-ballot-measures/">broader lawsuit</a>&nbsp;arguing the measures violate federal law and unconstitutionally delegate lawmaking authority away from the Legislature continues in Strong’s courtroom. It was filed Tuesday against Pillen, Secretary of State Bob Evnen and the three sponsors of the ballot initiatives that&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2024/11/06/medical-cannabis-prevails-at-nebraskas-ballot-box-but-fate-depends-on-legal-challenges/">voters widely adopted in November</a>.

This is the second legal challenge against the measures led by John Kuehn, a former state senator, former member of the State Board of Health and a longtime marijuana opponent.

Attorneys for Pillen and the ballot sponsors argued in court that the request would force the governor to violate his constitutional duties.

Initiative Measure 437 passed with 71% of Nebraskans’ support to legalize up to 5 ounces of medical cannabis with a written doctor’s recommendation.

Initiative Measure 438 passed with 67% voter approval to regulate the drug through a newly created Nebraska Medical Cannabis Commission, whose licensing and regulatory authority broadly mirrors and includes the three members of the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission.

Once the measures become law, Nebraska will become the 39th state to authorize some form of medical cannabis. Nearly every state except Nebraska has legalized some form of cannabis or its derivatives, and about two dozen states allow recreational marijuana sales and distribution.

Pillen and four other state constitutional officers&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2024/12/02/results-certified-for-nebraskas-2024-general-election/">unanimously certified the Nov. 5 election results</a>&nbsp;during a Dec. 2 meeting.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskalegislature.gov/laws/articles.php?article=III-4" target="_blank">Nebraska Constitution</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskalegislature.gov/laws/statutes.php?statute=32-1414" target="_blank">state law</a>&nbsp;give the governor a&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2024/11/26/whats-next-for-nebraska-medical-cannabis-paid-sick-leave-abortion-school-choice/">10-day deadline</a>&nbsp;after the election is certified to declare which ballot measures voters approved. Once that step is taken, the measures become law.

Pillen’s predecessor, U.S. Sen. Pete Ricketts, R-Neb., signed off on&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/ricketts-ballot-measures-proclamations.pdf">eight ballot measures</a>&nbsp;that passed during his time as governor. Ricketts signed all eight measures within eight days. Pillen’s ninth day was Wednesday.

Attorney Daniel Gutman, speaking for the ballot sponsors of Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana, said the “status quo” is that the measures will become law with Pillen’s signature.

“I know that a handful of people in very powerful positions in the state are having a really hard time grappling with this election result, and frankly, they’re turning to the judiciary to overturn it,” Gutman said. “To say that an injunction preventing the overwhelming will of Nebraska voters is in those voters’ best interests is frankly offensive to the electorate.”

Kuehn attorney Eddie Greim of Kansas City, Missouri, argued that Strong should block Pillen from signing because the new laws would:

“It sort of creates a small insular government within a government that’s going to control an important new industry,” Greim said. “Whether all the benefits of this measure claimed by the proponents are ultimately realized is really going to depend on standards created from whole cloth by these commissioners.”

The Legislature can amend the laws and offer clarity, Greim said, though doing so would require a&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskalegislature.gov/laws/articles.php?article=III-2" target="_blank">two-thirds majority</a>&nbsp;(33 votes) because the laws were enacted by the people.

Greim, one of four attorneys from his Kansas City firm assisting Kuehn, has a history of taking&nbsp;<a href="https://themissouritimes.com/governors-publicly-paid-impeachment-lawyer-registers-as-lobbyist/" target="_blank">high-profile cases</a>. He defended&nbsp;<a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2023/01/06/jan-6-probe-witness-lawyers-00076779" target="_blank">associates</a>&nbsp;of President-elect Donald Trump&nbsp;<a href="https://wisconsinexaminer.com/briefs/house-jan-6-committee-to-wait-for-court-ruling-before-enforcing-vos-subpoena/" target="_blank">after the 2020 election</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://missouriindependent.com/2021/03/26/todd-graves-gets-high-powered-help-lobbying-for-university-of-missouri-curator-position/" target="_blank">former Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens against a 2018 impeachment threat</a>.&nbsp;

Kuehn’s team also includes out-of-state attorney Anne Mackin of Austin, Texas, a former Texas assistant attorney general and former legal counsel for the Texas Senate and Federal Elections Commission. She is one of a few attorneys representing Kuehn in a&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2024/09/12/lawsuit-seeks-to-invalidate-nebraskas-medical-marijuana-ballot-measures/">previous lawsuit against the marijuana measures</a>.

Strong also presided over that lawsuit filed Sept. 12, which was rooted in&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2024/09/13/secretary-of-state-celebrates-local-election-officials-in-finalizing-nebraskas-fall-2024-ballot/">petition signature challenges</a>. Strong&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2024/11/26/district-judge-sides-with-nebraska-medical-cannabis-ballot-sponsors-in-legal-challenge/">dismissed the case</a>&nbsp;on Nov. 26, which Kuehn is&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/briefs/nebraska-medical-cannabis-case-appealed/">appealing</a>.

Solicitor General Eric Hamilton, defending Pillen in the latest lawsuit, said Kuehn’s request, if accepted, “opens the floodgate to some pretty expansive constitutional litigation in Nebraska at a very early stage.”

The speaker of the Legislature and secretary of state have similar duties to oversee successful legislation after a veto override or when the governor refuses to sign a bill, Hamilton argued. And the governor generally signs new bills into law.

Hamilton questioned whether lawsuits could be allowed at those stages to block ministerial duties as “brand new vehicles” for lawsuits under Kuehn’s arguments.

“We’ve had 150-plus years of constitutional litigation in Nebraska,” Hamilton said. “Mr. Kuehn hasn’t cited a single case in which the substantive validity of the statute has been tested in this manner.”

Greim said stopping the laws from taking effect would be in the public’s interest, which Gutman described as “absolutely bewildering” because of broad demand from Nebraskans statewide.&nbsp;

Greim has argued that ministerial duties should not be completed “blindly” if doing so would be against the law, and he said there had been “no chance” to litigate the claims until now.

Kuenn’s first lawsuit initially included the federal preemption and delegation arguments, though both were&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2024/09/27/district-court-judge-dismisses-some-but-not-all-charges-in-nebraska-medical-cannabis-lawsuit/">dropped early on in that case</a>.

“The public interest has to be key to the Constitution, not the results of any passing vote,” Greim said. “Otherwise, the public interest will never weigh in favor of enjoining an unconstitutional initiative petition.”

Strong said she was not going to comment on the merits of the federal preemption or delegation arguments as the case continues in her courtroom.

District judge lets Nebraska medical cannabis laws go into effect as second lawsuit continues

United States Attorney Susan Lehr announced the extradition of Abiola Kayode, 37, of Nigeria, to the District of Nebraska on a Conspiracy to Commit Wire Fraud Indictment, filed in August 2019 in Omaha, Nebraska.

&nbsp;In April 2023, law enforcement authorities in the Republic of Ghana arrested Kayode pursuant to a U.S. request for his extradition. Ghanaian authorities ultimately granted this request and surrendered Kayode to&nbsp;FBI special agents who brought him to the District of Nebraska.&nbsp;&nbsp;Kayode had an initial appearance on the Indictment on December 11, 2024. United States Magistrate Judge Michael D. Nelson ordered Kayode remain detained pending trial.

Kayode, who was on the FBI’s Most Wanted Cyber Criminal List, is alleged to have participated in a business email compromise (BEC) scheme from January 2015 to September 2016. The BEC scheme defrauded businesses in the District of Nebraska and elsewhere of more than $6 million. According to the indictment, Kayode’s co-conspirators posed as the chief executive officer, president, owner, or other executive of the targeted company.

Using e-mail accounts spoofed to make it appear as though they were from the company’s true business executive, Kayode’s co-conspirators directed business employees or recipients of the e-mail to complete wire transfers. The business employees, believing the requests were legitimate, complied with the wire transfer requests and wired the money as instructed by Kayode’s co-conspirators.

It is alleged Kayode provided bank account information to the co-conspirators who sent the fraudulent e-mails, and which directed business employees to wire money to accounts controlled by Kayode and others. These bank accounts largely belonged to victims of internet romance scams, who were instructed by co-conspirators to transfer the funds to other bank accounts.

Some of Kayode’s co-conspirators have already been convicted and sentenced. Adewale Aniyeloye, one of the fraudsters sending the spoofed e-mails to the target business, was sentenced in February 2019 to 96 months’ imprisonment and ordered to pay $1,570,938.05 in restitution. Pelumi Fawehinimi, a bank account facilitator, was sentenced in March 2019 to 72 months’ imprisonment and ordered to pay $1,014,159.60 in restitution.&nbsp;

Onome Ijomone, a romance scammer, was sentenced in January 2020 to 60 months’ imprisonment and ordered to pay $508,934.40 in restitution after his successful extradition from Poland. Other co-conspirators remain at large. Alex Ogunshakin, a co-conspirator who provided bank accounts for the scheme, was sentenced to 45 months’ imprisonment in October 2024 after his successful extradition from Nigeria.&nbsp;

“Four years ago, we identified six Nigerian nationals suspected of defrauding individual victims and businesses in Nebraska and other states of millions of dollars,” said FBI Omaha Special Agent in Charge Eugene Kowel. “Today, Abiola Kayode is the second of those co-conspirators to be extradited to stand trial in Nebraska. Our message to the remaining four co-conspirators; we are coming for you. Dismantling cyber-criminal groups that victimize U.S. citizens is a priority for the FBI, DOJ, and our international law enforcement partners.&nbsp;

The FBI, working together with our partners in Ghana, particularly the Office of the Attorney General and Ministry of Justice, the Ghana Police Service - INTERPOL, and the Ghana Immigration Service, will continue to pursue and bring to justice criminals who engage in Business Email Compromise and other fraud schemes.”

This case was investigated by&nbsp;the Federal Bureau of Investigation.&nbsp; The Department of Justice’s Office of International Affairs provided significant assistance in securing Kayode’s extradition.

An indictment is merely an allegation. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

In 2024, Troopers have made 1,339 arrests for driving under the influence. That represents a 14 percent increase over the number of DUI arrests in 2023.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that more than 4,700 lives were lost in drunk-driving crashes in the month of December from 2018-2022. During that same period, Nebraska troopers averaged 91 impaired driving arrests in the month of December.

Fischer Announces University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s University Singers to Perform at the 60th Presidential Inauguration

(KEARNEY, NEB.)&nbsp;— On December 10, Governor Jim Pillen joined Nebraska Department of Veterans’ Affairs (NDVA) Director John Hilgert in presenting World War II recognition medals to veterans living at the Central Nebraska Veterans’ Home (CNVH). The ceremony was part of Nebraska’s World War II Veteran Recognition Program that was announced earlier this year on May 8, Victory in Europe Day.

“As we approach the 80th&nbsp;anniversary of World War II, it’s incredible to think of what we owe these heroes,” said Governor Pillen. “Being able to present these medals to Nebraska’s World War II veterans is an incredible honor and privilege for me, and I’m looking forward to meeting more of them, hearing their stories, and thanking them for their service as we recognize them for everything they’ve done for this country.”

Veterans honored at CNVH include Dr. John Finkner of Minden, Don Graper of Gibbon, Doug Graul of Fairbury, and Elmer Heeren of Hastings.

The medal was created by the State of Nebraska and designed by NDVA to honor living World War II veterans. It is available to living veterans who served in the U.S. Armed Forces between December 1, 1941, and December 31, 1946; are legal residents of Nebraska or can demonstrate Nebraska residency at the time they entered the service; and discharged under conditions other than dishonorable.

Applicants can choose to receive their medal at an in-person ceremony at the Nebraska State Capitol on May 8, 2025; through their Mayor's Office in participating cities and towns, or by having them shipped or delivered&nbsp;to their home. Eligible veterans are encouraged to apply at&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://veterans.nebraska.gov/ww2">veterans.nebraska.gov/ww2</a>. There is no deadline to apply.

NDVA recently received the medals and is beginning to distribute to those who have already applied<a>, including those residing at the state’s four veterans’ homes.</a>

“Our goal is to thank and recognize every Nebraska veteran of World War II,” said NDVA Director John Hilgert. “Their service, sacrifice, and stories are important, and I would encourage anyone who knows a World War II veteran—whether it’s a family member, friend, neighbor, or someone else—to share this program with them and help them apply to be recognized for their service.”

These windfall proceeds will repay ERA lenders like the United States to provide assistance to Ukraine while minimizing the burden on U.S. taxpayers. This loan will leverage windfall proceeds earned from immobilized Russian sovereign assets to pay for the damage Russia has caused.&nbsp;The Biden-Harris Administration aims to place Ukraine in the strongest possible position and will continue to take meaningful steps to help Ukraine fight for the future it deserves.
