Elected and political leaders in Nebraska reacted this weekend to the shooting of former President Donald Trump and at least two people attending one of his rallies in Pennsylvania.
Here’s a sampling:
Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen: “This was a terrible incident and a shocking moment for our democracy. Suzanne and I are gratified that President Trump is reported to be okay, but we are deeply saddened to hear that one attendee was killed and at least one other has been injured. All politically motivated violence is to be condemned, no matter what form or what situation.”
U.S. Sen. Deb Fischer, R-Neb.: “Bruce and I are thankful that President Trump has survived this assassination attempt, and we’re praying for the families with loved ones lost and in critical condition. The decisive actions of law enforcement on the scene no doubt prevented further loss of life, and we’re grateful for their bravery.”
U.S. Sen. Pete Ricketts, R-Neb.: “My wife Susanne and I send our condolences to the families of the innocent victims. I’m grateful President Trump is safe and that more people in attendance were unharmed. Political violence is anti-American. We need a full investigation into today’s assassination attempt and the information must be shared with the American people as soon as possible.”
U.S. Rep. Mike Flood, R-Neb., 1st District: “I am grateful that President Trump has survived this assassination attempt. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the attendee who tragically lost their life and to those who remain in critical condition,” Rep. Flood said. “Violence has no place in politics. I expect an investigation into the shooting to ensure justice and understanding of this incident.”
U.S. Rep. Don Bacon, R-Neb., 2nd District: “Our nation has been rocked by this assassination attempt. While we’re thankful that President Trump is okay we are mourning for the family who lost a loved one. We’re also praying for the quick recovery of the other victims and send our thanks to the Secret Service who raced to protect President Trump, as well as law enforcement and first responders. I absolutely condemn all political violence, to include this vile attack. Furthermore, we lift this nation up in prayer that we can come together to heal and move past the hyper partisanship that weakens our nation.”
U.S. Rep. Adrian Smith, R-Neb., 3rd District: “I am grateful Pres. Trump is reportedly safe and recovering with non-life-threatening injuries. Violence has no place in our nation’s political life, and this attack marks a sobering day for our country. … My prayers are with Pres. Trump and everyone at the event in Pennsylvania. I appreciate the fast action of members of the Secret Service and am monitoring reports for more information.”
Preston Love Jr., Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate: “I am aware of the shooting incident at Former President Trump’s rally this afternoon. Violence in our country is never the answer. Whether in the streets or against our leaders, it is simply unacceptable. I urge everyone to stand against violence as we work toward a better future for our nation. I wish Former President Trump a speedy recovery.”
State Sen. Carol Blood of Bellevue, Democratic candidate for 1st Congressional District: “Condolences to those whose family members lost their lives today. I am thankful that our secret service did their jobs so eloquently today to protect the former president. Violence is never the answer & I hope this incident brings us closer as a country & not further apart.”
State Sen. Tony Vargas of Omaha, Democratic candidate for 2nd Congressional District: “There is no place for violence in our politics and I strongly condemn all acts of violence against anyone, regardless of their political party. I am glad to hear that President Trump is ok and thank our law enforcement for their quick action.”
Jane Kleeb, chair of the Nebraska Democratic Party: “The Nebraska Democratic Party condemns all political violence. We are grateful to the Secret Service and law enforcement for protecting former President Trump and getting him to safety. We hope all rally-goers are on their way home to their loved ones.”
Nebraska Republican Party: “Pray to God. Pray with Americans. Pray for President Donald J. Trump.”
