Officials: China evacuees to be quarantined in Nebraska

Posted Feb 06, 2020 11:09 AM

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - American evacuees from the growing coronavirus outbreak in China will be flying into Omaha as soon as Thursday and be quarantined at a nearby Nebraska National Guard training base, officials said Wednesday.

The plane will be landing at Eppley Airfield and park at a remote spot. The passengers will not go inside the terminal, said a news release from Nebraska Medicine, and they'll be taken to Camp Ashland, which sits about 30 miles southwest of the airport. Nebraska Medicine spokesman Taylor Wilson said he couldn't yet say how many evacuees were headed to Omaha or when the flight was expected to land.

Nebraska National Guard officials have been preparing to house evacuees in three buildings with 85 hotel-style rooms at the camp. Guard officials have said the evacuees won't interact with guardsmen or employees there.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said earlier Wednesday that planes also will arrive at military bases in California and Texas, and all the passengers will be screened by federal personnel for symptoms. Americans returning from China's Hubei province, the center of the outbreak, are subject to 14 days of mandatory quarantine.

Former Sioux Falls teacher accused of sex contact with minor
Daylan Scott Fargo

SIOUX FALLS, S.D (AP) - A former Sioux Falls teacher is under arrest on charges he had sexual contact with a minor.

A Sioux Falls police spokesman said Daylan Scott Fargo, 27, was arrested Monday in Hall County, Nebraska. Fargo faces three charges, including sexual contact with a child under 16, sexual exploitation of a minor and solicitation of a minor.

Fargo is a former assistant choir director at Washington High School. The Argus Leader reports Fargo resigned from his position two days before a parent filed a protection order against him last week on behalf of their son.

Fargo is being held in Nebraska on $100,000 cash bond. The Minnehaha County State's Attorney's office said Wednesday no attorney was listed for Fargo who could speak for him.

A spokeswoman for the Sioux Falls School District confirms Fargo is no longer a district employee.
