
SEDGWICK COUNTY —A Kansas man has been sentenced to prison for animal cruelty after killing his girlfriend's puppy and other crimes. Judge Eric Williams sentenced 46-year-old Jesse Powell to just over 2 and one half years in prison, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.
Powell pleaded guilty to two counts of criminal threat and a misdemeanor count of cruelty to animals.
In November of 2020, the Wichita police department Domestic Intervention Violence Reduction Team following up on a domestic violence threat case worked to locate Powell who was wanted on requested threat charges, Police learned Powell had fatally injured his girlfriend's puppy, according to Officer Charley Davidson.
Police located Powell and arrested him at a home in the 4200 block of South Broadway in Wichita.
He has previous convictions for stalking, forgery, aggravated battery, aggravated assault, aggravated criminal threat, battery of a law enforcement officer and for drugs, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.
