Firefighters report stable conditions on the Cottonwood Fire, with containment lines continuing to hold despite ongoing interior burning.

Operations Chief Rob Powell with Rocky Mountain Team 1 said hotspots remain active within the fire perimeter but are not expected to threaten control efforts.

“The stuff that’s cooking off in the interior is a long ways away to the edge of our containment lines,” Powell said.

While fire behavior remains manageable, Powell cautioned that conditions can change quickly.

“Not saying something weird couldn’t happen,” he said.

Crews remain fully staffed and prepared to respond to any flare-ups.

“If it does, we still have the resources on these fires to deal with anything that might squirt out,” Powell said.

Firefighting resources are not being scaled back, as officials prepare for continued elevated fire danger.

“We’re not reducing our resources and capability to fight fires in western Nebraska,” Powell said.

Officials say the entire Northern Great Plains is experiencing extreme fire weather conditions.

“Everybody… is on a high state of readiness for today,” Powell said.

A Red Flag Warning remains in effect, and residents are urged to avoid activities that could spark a fire and to report any smoke or flames immediately.

“If there are new fires… call 911,” Powell said.
