SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) - A Nebraska woman has pleaded guilty in an Iowa court to a reduced murder charge in the 2018 stabbing death of her romantic interest's girlfriend.

Melissa Camargo-Flores, 22, of Dakota City, Nebraska, pleaded guilty Friday to second-degree murder in the death of 24-year-old Kenia Alvarez-Flores in Sioux City on April 8, 2018, the Sioux City Journal reported.

Camargo-Flores had faced a first-degree murder charge and the possibility of life in prison before the plea deal.

In her plea hearing, Camargo-Flores admitted stabbing Alvarez-Flores. Prosecutors said she had been romantically involved with the victim's boyfriend and had waited outside Alvarez-Flores's Sioux City home the day of the stabbing. When Alvarez-Flores left to go to work, Camargo-Flores attacked her, stabbing the victim several time. Alvarez-Flores later died at a hospital.

Camargo-Flores now faces up to 50 years in prison when she's sentenced on Oct. 29.
