A recent state audit reveals that Nebraska Lottery sales have dropped by more than $36 million, marking a 16.3% decline compared to the previous fiscal year. The decrease is expected to impact funding for several state programs, including the Nebraska Environmental Trust, the Nebraska State Fair, the Compulsive Gamblers Assistance Fund, and educational initiatives such as the Nebraska Opportunity Grant Fund.
State Auditor Mike Foley said the decline may be partly due to the growth of casino gambling and other gaming options, which could be drawing players away from traditional lottery games. The audit also points to a 4.85% decrease in scratch ticket sales during fiscal year 2024. The Nebraska Lottery says the drop is tied, in part, to the rising popularity of instant-win gaming machines offered by some retailers.
In response to the downturn, Nebraska Lottery officials are exploring new strategies to attract players and adapt to changes in the gaming landscape.
