Sheriff IDs Mo. couple in deadly knife attack at Nebraska highway rest area

HALL COUNTY, Neb. —Authorities investigating a a deadly attempted robbery at a highway rest area in Nebraska have identified the victims as Gary and Mary Weaver of Eureka, Missouri, according to the Hall County, Nebraska Sheriff's office.

James Thompson, Jr., 22, Elyria, Ohio, is being held in the Hall County jail on requested charges of first degree murder, attempted first degree murder, first degree assault, robbery, fleeing in a motor vehicle to avoid arrest and traffic violations.

Just after 7 a.m. Wednesday, deputies responded to a disturbance at the westbound rest area at 4148 Interstate 80, according to a media release from the Hall County, Nebraska sheriff office. 

First responders found two victims who had suffered wounds from an assault with a knife. EMS transported both victims, a 72-year-old Gary Weaver and a 71-year-old Mary Weaver both of Eureka, Missouri, to the hospital in Grand Island.  Gary Weaver died of his injuries and Mary Weaver was reported in critical condition..

Local law enforcement provide the Nebraska State Patrol with a description of the suspect vehicle.  Troopers located the vehicle and arrested Thompson.
