U.S. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins visited western Nebraska this week to tour areas impacted by the Morrill Fire and meet with farmers and ranchers dealing with the aftermath.

The wildfire burned more than 643,000 acres, making it the largest in Nebraska history. According to Rollins, the damage has been devastating for agricultural producers, with many losing hay supplies, grazing land, and what she described as “their entire way of life.”

Rollins shared that many ranchers are now facing difficult recovery efforts with limited resources, calling the situation overwhelming for those directly affected.

Despite the losses, she pointed to strong community support across the state. In her remarks, Rollins highlighted efforts from residents in eastern Nebraska communities such as Craig and Oakland. She said a single social media post helped organize a convoy of 22 semi-trucks that delivered more than 700 bales of donated hay to ranchers in need.

“That’s how it works out here: when you lose everything, your neighbor shows up and helps carry the load,” Rollins said in a social media post following her visit.

She described the response as an example of rural resilience, emphasizing the role of neighbors helping neighbors during times of crisis.

Recovery efforts are ongoing, and state and local partners continue working with producers as they begin rebuilding after the fire.
