For Immediate Release: Captain Kevin Thompson
The Kearney Police Department (KPD) participated in a local “Back to School” traffic enforcement campaign during the first week of school, August 18–22, 2025. Officers conducted saturation patrols in and around school zones, pedestrian crosswalks, and school parking areas with the goal of promoting safety and ensuring compliance as students, parents, and staff returned to school.
Through this grant-funded effort, KPD officers dedicated 23.75 additional hours of enforcement and made 65 traffic contacts focused on violations that directly impact school zone safety. Captain Thompson noted, “The first week of school brings increased traffic and pedestrian activity around our schools. This enforcement effort helps remind drivers to slow down, remain alert, and make safety a priority for our children and community.”
The Kearney Police Department sincerely thanks the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety for funding this enforcement campaign and for their continued partnership in keeping our community safe.
