Sheriff IDs Kansas teen who died after crash with a semi

NEMAHA COUNTY—Authorities investigating a fatal Labor Day accident have identified the teen who died as 16-year-old Lawson Schmelzle of Seneca.

Just before 10:30 a.m. Monday, deputies responded to report of a crash on Q Road south of 112th, according to the Nemaha County Sheriff.

Investigators determined a 2005 Chevrolet pickup driven by Schmelzle was northbound, traveled left of center and struck the rear axle of a southbound  1989 Freightliner semi driven by Craig Nolte, 32, Seneca.

After impact, the pickup traveled off the east side of the road and flipped. Schmelzle was pronounced dead at the scene. The sheriff's department reported no additional information.
