Firefighters continue to make strong progress on the Road 203 Fire near Halsey, with containment now reaching 76% as fire activity decreases across the area.

According to the latest update from Rocky Mountain Complex Incident Management Team 3, the wildfire is currently estimated at 35,913 acres.

“Firefighters continued making steady progress yesterday, increasing containment to 76% on the Road 203 Fire,” the update states.

With improving conditions, fire officials say the overall complexity of the incident has decreased, allowing for a transition to fewer resources.

“With a decrease in fire activity and positive progress in containment, the Road 203 Fire complexity has lessened, and a smaller group of resources will begin managing the fire Thursday morning,” officials said.

While fewer crews may be visible in surrounding communities, fire managers emphasize that staffing levels will continue to be evaluated.

“Although there may be less of a noticeable presence of fire resources in and around the communities, fire managers will continually evaluate the forecast and expected fire behavior to ensure an adequate number of resources are staffing the fire.”

Crews will continue to monitor and secure containment lines while addressing remaining hotspots within the fire perimeter.

“Containment lines will be monitored and patrolled,” the update states. “Firefighters will continue using UTVs in areas inaccessible to engines to locate and extinguish any remaining heat inside the fire perimeter.”

Drone technology will also remain a key tool in ongoing suppression efforts.

“Unmanned Aircraft Systems will be used along uncontained portions of the fire perimeter to locate pockets of heat using infrared technology,” officials said. “This process helps crews quickly locate areas of heat while reducing firefighter exposure to hazards.”

Currently, 118 personnel remain assigned to the fire, supported by three aircraft, 16 engines and four heavy equipment units.

Despite increased containment, weather conditions could still present challenges.

A red flag warning is in effect from noon to 8 p.m., with temperatures expected to reach the mid-70s. Winds are forecast from the west-southwest at 6 to 13 miles per hour, with gusts up to 25 miles per hour, and relative humidity dropping to 20 to 25 percent.

Officials say winds are expected to decrease and temperatures increase as the week progresses.

The Bessey Ranger District of the Nebraska National Forest remains closed to ensure public and firefighter safety.

A Temporary Flight Restriction is also in place over the fire area, and officials remind the public that unauthorized aircraft and drones are prohibited.

“If you fly, we can’t.”
