Representative Adrian Smith says Nebraska is facing an unprecedented wildfire crisis as massive fires continue to impact central and western parts of the state.

In a statement following visits to affected areas, Smith said more than 826,000 acres have burned over the past week, destroying homes, damaging infrastructure, and forcing families to evacuate with little warning.

“This is the worst wildfire crisis Nebraska has ever experienced and for many families the hardship is far from over,” Smith said.

After meeting with local officials, first responders, and residents, Smith described the devastation as “sobering,” pointing to widespread losses across agricultural operations.

“The scale of destruction is immense, with entire pastures lost, fences destroyed, and livelihoods threatened,” he said. “Agriculture is not just our leading industry; it is a way of life for so many across our state.”

Smith emphasized that for many Nebraska families, farming and ranching represent generations of hard work and tradition now under significant strain.

Despite the destruction, Smith said the response from communities across the state reflects Nebraska’s resilience. Volunteer firefighters and first responders continue working long hours to contain the fires, while neighbors are helping move livestock and providing support to those affected.

Communities outside the fire zones are also stepping up, sending supplies and offering assistance.

Smith urged those impacted to document damages as soon as it is safe, noting that federal disaster assistance programs are available. He added that his office is ready to help connect Nebraskans with available resources.

Looking ahead, Smith said recovery will take time, particularly as producers face challenges heading into the summer grazing season after significant losses.

Still, he expressed confidence in the state’s ability to overcome the crisis.

“To every Nebraskan impacted by these fires: you are not alone,” Smith said. “We’ve faced tough times before and we have always come through them stronger, together.”
