The Mid-Plains Community College Board of Governors met for its regularly scheduled meeting at 6:30 p.m. (CDT) Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2023, in Room 213 of the Health and Science Center on the North Platte Community College South Campus, 601 W. State Farm Rd., North Platte, Neb.

Board Vice Chair Cynthia Duncan started the meeting with a roll call. In addition to Duncan, those present were MPCC President Ryan Purdy and Board members: Jo Etta Brown, Matthew Broz, Kirk Crawley, Ted Klug Jr., Ernie Mehl, Kent Miller, Tyler Pribbeno and Tricia Schaffer. Board members Kim Korgan and Ben Lashley were absent and excused.

2. OPEN FORUM (Comments from students, faculty, staff, public and Board)

a. Josiah Wriedt, student clerk in the business office, updated the Board on summer events he was involved in and preparations for the return of students.

b. Board member Kent Miller reminded the Board that the college is hosting the Nebraska Community College Association annual meeting in November.

3. CONSENT ITEMS.&nbsp;On a single consent motion, the board approved:

a. Minutes from the July 19 Board work session and regular meeting.

b. The preliminary financial report for July.

a. The Board approved bills for July in the amount of $2,336,287.09.

b. The Board approved the publication of the proposed budget reflecting total expenditures of $51,594,562 with an anticipated property tax increase of 2.8 % to be presented at the public hearing on Sept. 27.

c. The Board approved the first reading of proposed changes in the 1000, 2000 and 3000 Board Policy sections as presented and discussed.

a. Cabinet Reports: The Board heard reports from MPCC President Ryan Purdy, Vice President of Academic Affairs and NPCC Dr. Jody Tomanek, Vice President of Administrative Services Mike Steele, Vice President of Student Affairs and MCC Kelly Rippen, Director of Institutional Effectiveness Tad Pfeifer, Director of Human Resources Rebecca Wrage and Director of Marketing and Public Information Daniel Stinman.

a. The Board went into closed session at 7:28 p.m. to discuss personnel. No action was taken after the Board reconvened in open session at 7:38 p.m.

Upon hearing no further business, the Board moved to adjourn at 7:38 p.m. The next Board meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Sept. 27 in North Platte.

Mid-Plains Community College Ogallala Campus Job Fair Today

North Platte News Director Canon Rath talked with Dianne Morales about the upcoming 2023 Woofstock event.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE, NEB - The 2023 Woofstock event is taking place this Saturday at Memorial Park in North Platte from 10 am - 2 pm. This is the 15 year of the event and is the first time it's taken place since 2019. It missed the last few years due to Covid. It is a friendly reminder that all dogs do need to be on a leash and no cats to be brought to the park for the safety of the dogs and cats.

There are plenty of different activities for dogs and humans to enjoy. The splash pad will be open for dogs and humans to play. It's supposed to be a hot day, so the splash pad offers a way to cool down. Also there will be ice cream for the humans and ice cream for the dogs to enjoy. Raffle tickets are being sold. There's so much going on and if you want to learn about everything that is going on at the event, check out the podcast above.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE, NEB - Law enforcement is searching for a White Cadillac Escalade with California plates after suspicious activity in North Platte. The vehicle was last seen heading westbound from Hershey on HWY 30.

It's believed there is an Indian couple in the vehicle with a child in the backseat. The couple maybe armed with a large knife or machete according to reports. There have been sightings of the couple.

There will be a hot dog meal featuring chips and a drink and only cost $1.50 and it is cash only to purchase the meal. There will be music performed by NPHS Marching Band and also a jazz performance by Canteen Legacy Jazz Ensemble.&nbsp;

150th Birthday Celebration for the City of North Platte

North Platte Post News Director Canon Rath talked with North Platte Mayor Brandon Kelliher as they recapped the August 15th, North Platte City Council meeting.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE, NEB - The August 15th North Platte City Council meeting has officially come and gone and there were different discussion points from the meeting. From the latest city council meeting, there were different agenda the council talked about. A few of the different agenda topics were 4 grant applications, a quality growth fund for 2 new business, interlocal agreements for 911 services and resource officers in schools were just a few from the agenda list.&nbsp;

A big part of the meeting was requesting permission from the council to apply for 4 different grants. "The initial 4 were applications to the federal government, 4 grants in millions I think total amount was $70 million or so we are requesting," said North Platte Mayor Brandon Kelliher. "It's highly unlikely we would get all that money granted to the city of North Platte but its primary for infrastructure projects so streets, water/sewer, repaving areas or expanding."&nbsp;

The sequence of areas to be overlayed are as follows.&nbsp;

1. Grant Street from 2nd Street to 3rd Street.&nbsp;

2. 2nd Street from Grant Street to Jeffers Street.&nbsp;

3. 3rd Street from Willow Street to Vine Street.&nbsp;

4. 3rd Street from Jeffers Street to Tabor Street.&nbsp;

As part of the resurfacing project all vehicles and trailers will have to be removed until the milling&nbsp; and placement operations are completed. There will be some short periods of time that driveways will not be accessible as these operations pass the driveways. We apologize for any inconvenience&nbsp; that this may pose and will work as quickly as possible to minimize the inconvenience.&nbsp;

Alternate routes are suggested or may be required. Access to Local businesses will be maintained&nbsp; with delays possible.&nbsp;

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Union Pacific's new CEO Jim Vena started Monday by promising to improve&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/railroad-safety-derailments-tank-car-ohio-minnesota-c60f33b64e9c7dc05768a78ae20f3ce5">safety</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/business-omaha-7824a3d4042a757755ea76f55e51f641">service</a>&nbsp;to help the railroad grow, but he cautioned that “the road ahead won't be an easy one.”

Some of the Omaha, Nebraska, railroad's biggest unions are&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/smartnvslb/status/1684691862144143361?s=20">already lukewarm</a>&nbsp;on Vena's hiring because he is a strong proponent of the lean operating model UP and the rest of the industry have been using in recent years that led to widespread job cuts. Vena helped oversee Union Pacific's initial implementation of that&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/business-aab7d3084a8d17d8d721d2cb750be323">“precision scheduled railroading” model</a>&nbsp;when he served as the railroad's chief operating officer for two years starting in 2019.

Vena suggested more changes are coming at the railroad in&nbsp;<a href="https://www.up.com/aboutup/community/inside_track/jim-vena-day-one-it-230814.htm?agfc=InsideTrack&amp;agfm=JangoMail&amp;agfs=social">a note to all of UP's staff</a>&nbsp;Monday where he emphasized his experience working his way up through the industry after starting as a brakeman, but he didn't offer any specifics. He was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/union-pacific-railroad-earnings-ceo-jim-vena-6e9cefb37dacede8874dac62061e9850">hired last month</a>&nbsp;after a hedge fund&nbsp;<a href="https://static1.squarespace.com/static/60ad6c502b44e43fe7a303b9/t/63fbc01f43115a3c065fa353/1677443103154/Soroban+-+Letter+to+Union+Pacific%27s+Board+of+Directors.pdf">pressured</a>&nbsp;the railroad to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/labor-unions-transportation-and-shipping-omaha-business-b62a0068b4af75042e4c869ef2927418">oust Lance Fritz</a>&nbsp;because it was disappointed with Union Pacific's performance during his tenure.

“I know you have many questions about what will happen and how it will impact you,” Vena said in his letter. “I share some of those questions, and I will learn a lot from you as I travel the system. What I can tell you is that we will become the safest railroad in the world. I can tell you we will improve our service product, and we will become more efficient and more reliable – for ourselves, our customers, our communities and our shareholders.”

The five general chairpersons who lead the Transportation Division of the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers union that represents conductors on Union Pacific said after Vena's hiring that they blame him for much of the deterioration in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/business-economy-strikes-congress-d2ae4d3aecb27f176418518d977e69e1">workers' quality of life</a>&nbsp;because of the changes he made in the name of higher profits.

“He orchestrated huge furloughs and cuts to every department in transportation, which resulted in the crew shortages we have yet to recover from,” the SMART-TD union officials wrote in their letter. “Vena put this railroad on a long-term path of destruction for a short-term return on investment for Wall Street tycoons. Watching Union Pacific place this albatross as CEO for the foreseeable future is heartbreaking for those of us who have worked hard to bring Union Pacific back from the brink.”

The SMART-TD union canceled several of its scheduled negotiating sessions with the railroad over the next couple months because of the concerns about Vena's leadership and his willingness to address worker concerns.

The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen union also expressed reservations about Vena's hiring at the time it was announced.

Union Pacific is one of the nation’s largest railroads with a network of 32,400 miles (52,000 kilometers) of track in 23 Western states.

Ogallala back to school orientations/open houses tonight

GRANT, NEB - Over the weekend, The Perkins County Chamber of Commerce hosted a Drive-In Movie which featured the movie Top Gun: Maverick, which was released in May of 2022.&nbsp;

The free will donation event was held at the Perkins County Fairgrounds in Grant, Nebraska. The sound system was set up that it came in on FM transmitter, so folks could tune in 107.9 if they wanted to listen along in their car. There was also a PA System for folks who wanted to sit outside in a lawn chair.

The Perkins County Chamber of Commerce plans on showing a new movie every month with weather permitting. Concessions were available during the moving screening. The Perkins County Chamber of Commerce will announce next month's movie at a later date.&nbsp;
