North Platte Public Transit will be closed for Thanksgiving Weekend

Post Sports Director had the chance to talk with Haven Smith from the Mid-Plains United Way and also Mark Russell aka Dragon, the President of the Guardians of the Children. The crew talked about what's been going on with the United Way but also giving us an inside of Guardians of the Children.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE - The Mid-Plains United Way recently announced late last week that they received a check from Ace Hardware for just a little over $800. Ace Hardware did a dollar round up in the month of October to help raise money for United Way. Mid-Plains United Way has a busy time ahead of them as they have more events coming up.&nbsp;&nbsp;

- North Platte Year End Giving Starts Tuesday, Nov. 28th&nbsp;

-Gift Wrapping: Friday, Dec. 8th - Dec. 10th at Walmart here in North Platte. Presented by Lashley Land&nbsp;

-Triple Bee Holiday Craft Show Concession Stand: Dec. 16th &amp; 17th at the D&amp;N Event Center&nbsp;

-Giving Tree - FNBO at 201 N Dewey to benefit Hope Esperanza and Nebraska Youth Center Dec. 1st-20th.&nbsp;

Guardians of the Children is a non-profit motorcycle organization that helps children that have gone or may be going through child abuse. Members in the organization will attend the court hearings with these children and show their support for the children while they are testifying in court against their perpetrator.&nbsp;

The organization is also hosting a toy drive that will go through Dec. 5th and has partnered with Taco Johns. Both North Platte Taco Johns is doing their Nacho Navidad fundraiser for GOC as they are donating $.25 for Apple Grande &amp; $.50 for a LG Nacho Navidad.&nbsp;

ALLO RECEIVES THE 2023 HIRE VETS MEDALLION AWARD FROM THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF LABOR 

This week I supported a one-year extension of current Farm Bill programs. While a conventional 5-year reauthorization of the Farm Bill is preferable, many of these critical programs lapsed September 30th. The current lapse shouldn’t affect 2023 crops, but a one-year extension was necessary to prevent reverting back to pre-1930s farm policy as we begin 2024. I’m pleased Congress has acted to ensure American producers will have another year of certainty as they work to put food on our table and fuel in our cars – and now the Agriculture Committees in the House and Senate can finish their work on a new and improved Farm Bill without putting agriculture producers in an impossible position.

Crop insurance, in terms of funding, is a small portion of the Farm Bill; however, its renewal is one of the most important provisions to Nebraska’s producers. Because of the investment protections farmers opt into with their crop insurance premiums, we’re able to avoid ad hoc disaster payments, ultimately saving taxpayer dollars while providing farmers an important safety net.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, in the Nutrition title of the Farm Bill accounts for 80 percent of its cost. As we continue to consider reforms to SNAP, I’m optimistic we can build on legislation we enacted earlier this year to minimize fraud and ensure these programs help Americans most in need.

Modernization and the opportunities available through the advancements of precision agriculture are also an important component of the Farm Bill. Spurring innovation while ensuring farm data is protected is critical to maintaining a level playing field for farmers and ranchers.

This week the House also passed legislation to prevent an omnibus spending bill while keeping the government open by continuing current spending levels for four of the twelve annual appropriations bills until Jan. 19, 2024. The remaining eight bills are funded at current levels through February 2, 2024, giving the House and Senate more time to responsibly cut spending and ensure significant spending decisions are not forced at the last minute with minimal accountability.

Washington must curb its spending addiction, and the federal government must continue working while Congress comes to an agreement on how best to fund our priorities. A shutdown exacerbates backlogs and wait lines at federal agencies and can cause gaps in services Americans rely on.

We can no longer dismiss the need to address our spending problem and continue down this dangerous fiscal path. In order to make meaningful change, we can’t kid ourselves that this can be easily fixed through minor adjustments to annual discretionary spending. What’s known as mandatory spending is the biggest driver of our debt, and this cannot be remedied overnight.

As Moody’s Investors Service has placed the United States credit rating on downgrade watch and the national debt of the U.S. now exceeds $33.6 trillion, we need to aggressively look at the drivers of our debt. This is why I support legislation to create a bipartisan debt commission which would focus on the underlying fiscal problems and solutions to bring America back to fiscal health.

Despite the difficult task of changing how Washington does business, Congress has a responsibility to maintain key policy programs, prudently fund the government, and do what is best for the American people. Just as American households have to balance their budgets, Congress must also. I’m glad we’re finally taking steps in that direction.

What’s known as mandatory spending is the biggest driver of our debt, and this cannot be remedied overnight.As Moody’s Investors Service has placed the United States credit rating on downgrade watch and the national debt of the U.S. now exceeds $33.6 trillion, we need to aggressively look at the drivers of our debt. This is why I support legislation to create a bipartisan debt commission which would focus on the underlying fiscal problems and solutions to bring America back to fiscal health.Despite the difficult task of changing how Washington does business, Congress has a responsibility to maintain key policy programs, prudently fund the government, and do what is best for the American people. Just as American households have to balance their budgets, Congress must also. I’m glad we’re finally taking steps in that direction.

Fighting for Long-term Fiscal Health

Post News Director Canon Rath welcomed Mardel Manary and Diane Nuffer from the North Platte Opportunity Center for their monthly conversation but also to talk about the supported employment department.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE - The North Platte Opportunity was awarded the Sara Rickertsen Grant last month and have recently used the money to purchase 2 speech tablets for individuals who are nonverbal to use and hooked up phonics as well as flash cards. "I have heard several reports that a couple of the individuals are already recognizing sight words and it's exciting to see that it's doing what we wanted to do," said Mardel Manary.&nbsp;

The NPOC has a supported employment department for individuals to help get jobs and work. The staff at the NPOC helps individuals with resumes, practice interview skills are just a few of many to name. With the supported employment department, it helps Indvidual's who are involved feel included within the community and build confidence.&nbsp;

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will release adult rooster pheasants on 18 wildlife management areas prior to the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

&nbsp; The North Platte Police Department will be working with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Safety Administration to make sure citizens stay safe on the roads during the Thanksgiving Holiday Season. Of the 361 traffic fatalities in 2021, half were unrestrained. 

 Additional officers will be on the streets enforcing our traffic laws with an emphasis on unrestrained vehicle occupants.  Whether you’re driving out of town or just across town to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday, remember that more vehicles will be on the roads than usual.  The North Platte Police Department would like to remind you to “Buckle Up. Every Trip. Every Time”.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Connection has applied for funding through the Nebraska Investment Finance Authority’s Low Income Housing Tax Credit CRANE project to build an affordable, quality, supportive housing development. This development is planned to be approximately forty (40) units made up of one- and two-bedroom one-bath apartments, and three-bedroom two-bath apartments, all renting at or below fair market rate and will offer services and amenities designed to improve the quality of life of tenants and help them improve their overall self-sufficiency and sustainability.&nbsp;&nbsp;

We are working with an incredible developer and an architect who have completed many of these projects and who work hard to ensure that their affordable properties invoke a sense of pride not only in their tenants but the communities in which they are placed.&nbsp;&nbsp;

We plan to provide case management services, a community garden, playground, laundry facilities, a community building, and really there is so much potential for truly beneficial services in a project like this that I cannot wait to get started on building and growing the amazing partnerships that will make those services possible.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The development will serve low- and moderate-income households along with those that are needing other accommodations.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Our current timeline includes groundbreaking in the fall of 2024, and we look forward to providing an additional service in our community that will certainly benefit us all.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Second Chapter Brewing in Ogallala to host author Alan J. Bartels for a book signing

The Post's Derek Beck chatted with Keith County Chamber Membership and Events Coordinator Tawny Craig about the Annual Keith County Holiday Craft Fair that is going on at the fairgrounds in Ogallala tomorrow.

OGALLALA - Keith County is gearing up for the Annual Keith County Holiday Craft Fair which is taking place tomorrow at the fairgrounds in Ogallala from 9:00am -12:00 pm (mountain time zone). Around 30 vendors will be participating at this years craft fair. During the craft fair, you can expect many one of a type gifts.

For shoppers who are still wanting to explore craft fairs after finishing the Keith County Holiday Craft Fair, just 20 miles down the road, Paxton will be hosting their craft fair as well. Final Day of the Holiday Auction

Lincoln, NE– November 16, 2023–Pauline Linder of Cozad won $310,000 playing Nebraska Pick 5 from the Nebraska Lottery.

Linder purchased her ticket at Pump &amp; Pantry #32 at 604 E Hwy 30 in Cozad. The ticket contained five plays for the November 11 drawing, one of which matched that night’s winning numbers 07, 18, 35, 36 and 38.

When she checked her numbers on the Nebraska Lottery’s website, Linder said she was in shock.

“I took the ticket to my husband and said, “Look at this,’” she said.

“She just couldn’t believe it,” her husband Marvin Linder said.

Linder said she’s planning on paying off a few bills and putting the rest away in the bank.

Nebraska Pick 5 is Nebraska’s unique Lottery game: all the proceeds from Nebraska Pick 5 stay in Nebraska, and all the winning tickets are sold in Nebraska at Nebraska Lottery Lotto game retailers. On Monday November 13th at approximately 9:10 A.M.  Dundy County Communications received a report of a 2 vehicle Semi vs Pickup injury accident on U.S Highway 34 just west of Haigler. The Dundy County Sheriff's Office investigated the accident, and the preliminary investigation shows that the pickup was slowing to turn off the Highway when it was struck from behind by the semi. 2 adult males were transported to the Dundy County Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

North Platte, NE The Pecos League is proud to announce its newest team in North Platte, Nebraska. The team will be named the North Platte 80s. The Pecos League now has teams in eight states across the Western United States. The team will begin play at Bill Wood Field. The Teams website can be viewed at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.northplatte80s.com/">http://www.NorthPlatte80s.com</a>.The teams 80s themed colors are Denim Blue and Corvette Red. North Platte will join the 16 team Pecos League and take the place of the the Lancaster Sound Breakers from California. The Sound Breakers set the all time Pecos League Attendance Mark, but their stadium was sold to a soccer club. A new era of baseball in North Platte, Nebraska will begin in the Summer of 2024 as the North Platte 80's was unveiled as the new name of the newest Pecos League Team. The 80's represents a baseball team in many ways. First ties the city lying on Interstate 80. The excitement and passion is Baseball's Forgotten Era: The '80s in which National League Baseball was played with no Designated Hitter as the rules are in the Pecos League. Promotional nights will include 1980's nights with 1980's music, food and uniforms. The North Platte Team will play in the Mountain Division in the 2024 season along with the Tucson Saguaros, Roswell Invaders, Alpine Cowboys, Garden City Wind, Blackwell Flycatchers, Trinidad Triggers and Santa Fe Fuego. North Platte will host Spring Training for both the Tucson Saguaros and the North Platte 80s before the two teams play the first series in North Platte. Pecos League Commissioner and Owner Andrew Dunn "We are excited to play the 2024 season in North Platte, I believe it will fit perfectly with the other cities in the league. The people are Garden City have been extremely welcoming and Clint Lightner Ballpark will continue our mission to upgrade facilities in our league. MPCC Rodeo Team raffling Traeger grill

The Mid-Plains Community College Board of Governors met for its regularly scheduled meeting at 6:30 p.m. (CST) Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2023, in Room 200 of the W.W. Wood Building on the North Platte Community College North Campus, 1101 Halligan Drive, North Platte, Neb.

Board Chair Ben Lashley started the meeting with a roll call. In addition to Lashley, those present were MPCC President Ryan Purdy and Board members: Jo Etta Brown, Kirk Crawley, Ernie Mehl, Kent Miller, Kim Korgan, Tyler Pribbeno and Tricia Schaffer. Board members Matthew Broz, Cynthia Duncan and Ted Klug Jr. were absent.

Also present was MCC student trustee Graci Nelson. NPCC student trustee Reece Halley was absent.

2. OPEN FORUM (Comments from students, faculty, staff, public and Board)

a. MCC student trustee Graci Nelson reported on student activities in McCook.

b. MPCC President Ryan Purdy reminded the Board of the National Legislative Summit in Washington, D.C. Feb. 4-7.

3. CONSENT ITEMS.&nbsp;On a single consent motion, the board approved:

a. Minutes from the Oct. 18 Board work session, hearings and regular meeting.

b. The preliminary financial report for October.

a. The Board approved bills for October in the amount of $2,157,896.28.

b. The Board approved the 2024-25 tuition and fees at the same rates as for 2023-24.

c. The Board approved the housing and food rates as presented, which included an increase of $100 per semester for housing and an 8% increase in food costs per semester.

d. The Board approved 2024 membership dues for the Nebraska Community College Association (NCCA) in the amount of $74,865.03.

e. The Board approved the audit report as presented by Dana F. Cole &amp; Company in the Board’s work session.

f. The Board approved the Health and Science Center (HASC) Expansion Donor Recognition Report as presented.

a. The Board heard an enrollment report from Vice President of Student Affairs and MCC Kelly Rippen.

b. MPCC Board of Governors meeting wrap up repor

Robert Smith, of Culbertson, receives the keys to the 2023 North Platte Community College raffle car from automotive instructor Bryan Herrick Wednesday morning. Smith won the drawing for the 1972 Pontiac Le Mans Sport in September but was not present for the announcement.

The Le Mans is the 18th raffle vehicle produced by the college’s Transportation Division. It was restored by students in the Automotive Technology and Auto Body Technology programs.

A total of 5,959 tickets were sold this year. Proceeds will go toward scholarships for students in the college’s transportation programs and to help offset the cost of producing the next raffle car project.
