NORTH PLATTE, NEB - Nebraska's Biggest Little Rodeo Logan County Fair and Rodeo is approaching fast. The fair begins Saturday with different events for everyone in the family to enjoy. Also, the 4-H events will begin July 30th and will run through Saturday August 5th.&nbsp;&nbsp;

While there are plenty of events to do throughout the week, a new event is coming to this year's fair. On Friday, August 4th, Mini Barrel Race and Mini Bucking Bulls will be introduced for the first time. To participate in the Mini Barrel Race, you have to be 10 and under and to participate in Mini Bucking Bulls it's for ages 8-13. Check the flyer below for more information on the new event. The rodeo will kick off Saturday.&nbsp;

Lincoln, NE – July 28, 2023 – Due to high sales, officials in the states participating in the Mega Millions® Lotto game have increased the estimated jackpot amount for the Friday, July 28 drawing to $940 million or $472.5 million with the cash option selected.

The Mega Millions jackpot starts at $20 million and continues to grow each drawing until it is won. There have been 28 consecutive Mega Millions drawings since April 21 without a jackpot winner.

The Nebraska Lottery began offering Mega Millions in March of 2010. The largest Mega Millions jackpot on record occurred in October 2018 when one ticket was sold in South Carolina for a $1.537 billion jackpot.

Mega Millions jackpot winners have two options for collecting their payment: 30 annuity payments or one cash payment at present value. The Western Trails Creative District led by Keith County Area Development (KCAD) was recently named a certified Nebraska Creative District and was awarded a $10,000 Nebraska Arts Council Certification Grant. The Nebraska Creative District Program utilizes the arts as an economic driver to support communities in Nebraska by telling their stories and elevating the value of the arts.

Nebraska Creative Districts must submit a letter of interest, an Eligibility Assessment, and a Strategic Plan as part of the approval process. Goals can include attracting artists and creative enterprises, encouraging business and job development, establishing the district as a tourist destination, preserving and reusing historic buildings, and promoting the district’s cultural and historical heritage. Once certified, a district can apply for a Nebraska Arts Council Development Grant in the maximum amount of $250,000.

The Western Trails Creative District plans to develop impactful art projects throughout the district boundaries in Ogallala and will work diligently to leverage grant dollars to help make these projects a reality. This certification process has taken a little over a year and included outreach efforts in the form of business visits and a public input survey. Canon Rath talked with Lorena Beckius about a special presentation going on tonight in Ogallala about Human Trafficking and how folks can be more educated and be aware of human trafficking.&nbsp;

OGALLALA, NEB - The city of Ogallala is holding a special presentation tonight at Memorial Park right by the tennis courts about human trafficking. The event is set to start at 6pm mountain time and will last tell 7:30pm mountain time. The guest speaker will be Nebraska State Trooper Tim Flick.&nbsp;

When the event starts at 6pm, there will be a freedom walk. Once the freedom walk is completed, there will be free hot dogs and that is when Trooper Tim Flick will start the presentation. If you would like to learn more in-depth about the event, check out the podcast above.&nbsp;

Ogallala will be the B6 representative in this years tournament. They defeated Broken Bow twice on Championship Tuesday to advance. They will take on Springfield Post 143 tomorrow morning at 9:30 mountain/10:30 central. We will have the game live on Flatrock 100.7 and online at&nbsp;<a href="https://flatrock1007.com/">https://flatrock1007.com/</a>. Pregame coverage set to begin at 9:20 mountain/10:20 central.

Ogallala was the #2 seed in the B6 tournament this past weekend. They went on to win there first two games before falling to Broken Bow in game three. They responded to the lost with winning the last three games. They outscored their opponents 47-27, averaging about 8 runs a game.

Springfield Post 143 was the #4 seed in the B2 Area tournament. They defeated top seeded Omaha Roncalli 6-0 in the championship game. They are heading to Pierce with a 26-10 record.

Ogallala and Springfield will be the first game of the day. York will take on Wayne at 1:00pm central, Game 3 features Chadron and Wahoo which will be played at 3:30 central, and the last game of the day is Pierce taking on Haswell at 6:00pm central.&nbsp;

(North Platte, Nebraska, July 27, 2023) – Local event organizers continue to work hard to create fun and&nbsp; exciting events in North Platte that bring in visitors and contribute to the economic vitality of our&nbsp; community in addition to giving locals and visitors options for unique activities.&nbsp;

Visit North Platte operates under an agreement with the Lincoln County Board of Commissioners to&nbsp; facilitate the Nebraska Visitors Development Act. Grant funds, marketing, and operating expenses for&nbsp; Visit North Platte are funded by lodging taxes collected and remitted by lodging properties from&nbsp; overnight stays in Lincoln County.&nbsp;

The Visit North Platte Board of Directors approved grant funding at the monthly meeting held on July 26,&nbsp; 2023. The applications totaled $29,900 in requests and a total of $10,400 was awarded.&nbsp;

• Approved $2,400 in promotional and incentive funding for the Cody Park Disc Golf Course. The&nbsp; Cody Park Disc Golf Course is a twenty-basket course. However, nine of the baskets are still the&nbsp; original baskets from when the course was constructed and are no longer up to the standard&nbsp; needed to host the premier level disc golf tournaments that the North Platte Disc Golf Club is&nbsp; pursuing. Updating this equipment and adding proper signage will improve our disc golf course,&nbsp; which will make North Platte a candidate for larger disc golf tournaments, draw visitors to our&nbsp; area to experience a high-quality disc golf course, and provide community members with a&nbsp; better disc golf experience.&nbsp;

• Approved $8,000 in promotional and incentive funding for the American Cornhole League&nbsp; Conference. The American Cornhole League (ACL) is hosting a conference in North Platte&nbsp; October 13th-15th, 2023 at the D&amp;N Event Center. Cornhole is one of the fastest growing sports&nbsp; in the United State and has also started to grow internationally. Helping to advertise this event&nbsp; and offering the opportunity for larger payouts to competition winners will help to draw in more&nbsp; attendees from not only neighboring communities, but surrounding states. As the sport&nbsp; continues to grow it will be important to emphasize North Platte as a destination for cornhole&nbsp; due to our facilities and central location.&nbsp;

The next round of funding is now open, with an October 1 deadline for events or projects occurring in&nbsp; January, February, and March of 2024. These applications will be considered at the regular monthly&nbsp;

NEW YORK (AP) — Randy Meisner, a founding member of the Eagles who added high harmonies to such favorites as “Take It Easy” and “The Best of My Love” and stepped out front for the waltz-time ballad “Take It to the Limit,” has died, the band said Thursday.

Meisner died Wednesday night in Los Angeles of complications from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, the Eagles said in a statement. He was 77.

The bassist had endured numerous afflictions in recent years and personal tragedy in 2016 when his wife, Lana Rae Meisner, accidentally shot herself and died. Meanwhile, Randy Meisner had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and had severe issues with alcohol, according to court records and comments made during a 2015 hearing in which a judge ordered Meisner to receive constant medical care.

Called “the sweetest man in the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/music">music</a>&nbsp;business” by former bandmate&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/don-felder">Don Felder</a>, the baby-faced Meisner joined Don Henley,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/8169f05ac21d43dda4b1c1dd8b065e28">Glenn Frey</a>&nbsp;and Bernie Leadon in the early 1970s to form a quintessential Los Angeles band and one of the most popular acts in history.

“Randy was an integral part of the Eagles and instrumental in the early success of the band,” the Eagles’ statement said. “His vocal range was astonishing, as is evident on his signature ballad, ‘Take It to the Limit.’”

Evolving from country rock to hard rock, the Eagles turned out a run of hit singles and albums over the next decade, starting with “Take It Easy” and continuing with “Desperado,” “Hotel California” and “Life In the Fast Lane” among others. Although chastised by many critics as slick and superficial, the Eagles released two of the most popular albums of all time, “Hotel California” and “Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975),” which with sales at 38 million the Recording Industry Association of America ranked with Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” as the No. 1 seller.

Led by singer-songwriters Henley and Frey, the Eagles were initially branded as “mellow” and “easy listening.” But by their third album, the 1974 release “On the Border,” they had added a rock guitarist, Felder, and were turning away from country and bluegrass.

Leadon, an old-fashioned bluegrass picker, was unhappy with the new sound and left after the 1975 album “One of These Nights.” (He was replaced by another rock guitarist, Joe Walsh.) Meisner stayed on through the 1976 release of “Hotel California,” the band’s most acclaimed record, but was gone soon after. His departure, ironically, was touched off by the song he cowrote and was best known for, “Take It to the Limit.”

A shy Nebraskan torn between fame and family life, Meisner had been ill and homesick during the “Hotel California” tour (his first marriage was breaking up) and was reluctant to have the spotlight for “Take It to the Limit,” a showcase for his nasally tenor. His objections during a Knoxville, Tennessee, concert in the summer of 1977 so angered Frey that the two argued backstage and Meisner left soon after. His replacement, Timothy B. Schmit, remained with the group over the following decades, along with Henley, Walsh and Frey, who died in 2016.

As a solo artist, Meisner never approached the success of the Eagles, but did have hits with “Hearts On Fire” and “Deep Inside My Heart” and played on records by Walsh, James Taylor and Dan Fogelberg among others. Meanwhile, the Eagles ended a 14-year hiatus in 1994 and toured with Schmit even though Meisner had played on all but one of their earlier studio albums. He did join group members past and present in 1998 when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and performed “Take It Easy” and “Hotel California.” For a decade, he was part of World Classic Rockers, a touring act that at various times included Donovan, Spencer Davis and Denny Laine.

Meisner was married twice, the first time when he was still in his teens, and had three kids.

The son of sharecroppers and grandson of a classical violinist, Meisner was playing in local bands as a teenager and by the end of the 1960s had moved to California and joined a country rock group, Poco, along with Richie Furay and Jimmy Messina. But he would remember being angered that Furay wouldn’t let him listen to the studio mix of their first album and left the group before it came out: His successor was Timothy B. Schmit.

Meisner backed Ricky Nelson, played on Taylor’s “Sweet Baby James” album and befriended Henley and Frey when all were performing in Linda Ronstadt’s band. With Ronstadt’s blessing, they formed the Eagles, were signed up by David Geffen for his Asylum Records label and released their self-titled debut album in 1972.

Frey and Henley sang lead most of the time, but Meisner was the key behind “Take It the Limit.” It appeared on the “One of These Nights” album from 1975 and became a top 5 single, a weary, plaintive song later covered by Etta James and as a duet by Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings.

“The purpose of the whole Eagles thing to me was that combination and the chemistry that made all the harmonies just sound perfect,” Meisner told the music web site www.lobstergottalent.com in 2015. “The funny thing is after we made those albums I never listened to them and it is only when someone comes over or I am at somebody’s house and it gets played in the background that is when I’ll tell myself, ‘Damn, these records are good.’”

Canon Rath talked with the president of the Maxwell Wildcats Booster Club Marshall Robinson about the upcoming 4-man scramble at Lake Maloney.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE, NEB - Summer time is always that time of year to get out and enjoy the outdoors. It's also a good time to get a golf tournament rolling. The 9th annual Maxwell Wildcats Booster Club 4-person scramble is scheduled for August 5th at Lake Maloney golf course in North Platte.&nbsp;

The booster club has made it known that the money raised will not only be used for sports but used for all activities and to help purchase a new mascot costume. Some of the money is also set aside for a scholarship. "Maxwell Booster club is in charge of raising money all year long to help the school with certain items," said Maxwell Booster Club President Marshall Robinson.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The 4-person golf scramble fundraiser event to help raise money for different activities at Maxwell Public Schools is scheduled to take place on August 5th at Lake Maloney Golf Course. The event is open to anyone who wants to sign up and play in it. It cost $280 per team includes lunch and hole prizes. To sign up you can go to Lake Maloney or call the club house at 308-532-9998 or can you call Maxwell Public Schools at 308-582-4585 and ask for Dani.&nbsp;

The 9th annual Maxwell Wildcats Booster Club 4-person scramble is scheduled for August 5th at Lake Maloney golf course in North Platte.&nbsp;The booster club has made it known that the money raised will not only be used for sports but used for all activities and to help purchase a new mascot costume. Some of the money is also set aside for a scholarship. "Maxwell Booster club is in charge of raising money all year long to help the school with certain items," said Maxwell Booster Club President Marshall Robinson.&nbsp;&nbsp;The 4-person golf scramble fundraiser event to help raise money for different activities at Maxwell Public Schools is scheduled to take place on August 5th at Lake Maloney Golf Course. Fort Cody Summer Music Series moved indoors for tonight

It's hard to believe we are already in the last week of July! I'm not sure where the summer has gone. As we near the end of the summer here at NCTA, I take a moment to reflect on some of the events we have hosted on campus.

June was a very busy month for hosting various camps, field days, 4-H events, and meetings. One event that holds a special place in my heart was our third annual Agricultural Education Bootcamp. With my early career as a high school ag teacher/FFA advisor, I understand the importance of continuing education and professional development for ag teachers.

The week of June 26-29, NCTA hosted ten teachers from three states (one teacher flew all the way from North Carolina!), taking courses from NCTA instructors in a variety of subjects from Advanced Welding and Agronomy to Equine Management and Vet Tech. Thanks to our instructors, Dr. Doug Smith, Mary Rittenhouse, Dan Stehlik, Joanna Hergenreder, Dr. Brad Ramsdale, Judy Cole, and Chad Schimmels (Eustis-Farnam Agriculture instructor/NCTA Temporary Lecturer).&nbsp;

When asked what aspects of the bootcamp were most valuable to them, one teacher responded. "EVERY ASPECT!!! Enjoyed the hands-on labs and experiences, teaching, and the availability of resources. Experienced classroom techniques that I was unaware of and learned better options for classroom management. Learned how to better support and represent my FFA chapter to show the value of teaching Ag. Made connections with Ag teachers across the country to help view different areas of Ag and share resources."

This single comment sums up what we try to accomplish with this bootcamp. Our goal is to support teachers in the classroom to help make them more effective educators. We also want to make sure these instructors know what opportunities are available for their students to further their education in the field of agriculture or veterinary technology.

A second opportunity to bring teachers to campus was with the Tri-State Delta conference held July 10-14. NCTA hosted 34 instructors from Colorado, Kansas, and Nebraska, five of whom were NCTA alums now teaching Ag Ed. Six facilitators and two trainers were also on campus. One of the trainers was NCTA alumnus Randy Vlasin from Hayes Center.

Having the opportunity to engage with these 42 instructors gave additional exposure of NCTA and our programs to even more teachers.

Agricultural education is even more critical today than it ever has been. As our population continues to be increasingly removed from agriculture, they are less informed about where their food comes from. We need to be training more agriculturally literate consumers and advocates. Agriculture is the backbone of the Nebraska economy.

Agricultural Education programs are currently in 80 percent of all Nebraska high schools, and more are added yearly. This growth has resulted in a huge demand for agriculture teachers. NCTA is committed to doing our part to train and prepare the next crop of teachers.

Future teachers can start their Ag Ed career here at NCTA and then complete their degree and teaching certificate at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln through an articulation agreement that is seamless. Our students receive the technical agriculture knowledge and skills necessary to make them effective classroom teachers.

Ag Teachers in High Demand

Union Pacific Corporation (NYSE: UNP) today announced Jim Vena has been appointed as chief executive officer and a member of the Board, effective August 14, 2023.

The company also announced that Beth Whited, Union Pacific's executive vice president, sustainability and strategy and chief human resources officer, has been appointed as president, reporting to Vena. Mike McCarthy, Union Pacific's lead independent director, has been elected as chairman of the Board. These leadership changes are effective August 14, 2023, and reflect a strong focus on driving growth, improving service, and enhancing safety across the company's rail system.

Vena succeeds Lance Fritz, who is stepping down as chairman, president and chief executive officer. Going forward, the operations, finance, marketing and sales, supply chain, and technology functions will report directly to Vena. Whited's responsibilities will include the strategy, workforce resources, sustainability, law, corporate relations and government affairs functions.

Vena has more than 40 years of industry experience and is returning to Union Pacific after serving as its chief operating officer from 2019-2020 and as a senior advisor to the chairman in 2021.

“One of the most vital characteristics we considered as we conducted the search to identify the next CEO was extensive railroad operating experience,” said McCarthy. “Jim has that and more. After a comprehensive search process, the Board unanimously determined that his track record of operating excellence was unparalleled, and he is the right candidate for the job.”

Canon Rath talked with Coy Corfield about the upcoming Livestock Sale on Monday, July 31st. The two also talked more in depth on what Coy does for 4-H&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE, NEB - The Lincoln County Fair is officially here. The festival events began today while the 4-H events began on Monday. The livestock sale is Monday at 1pm. It is also a premium sale which means no livestock will be sold at the event. There is a complimentary buyer lunch from 11:30am - 1pm.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Coy has been doing 4-H for 4 years now. He also shows multiple animals for 4-H as he shows off horses, goats, and cows. 4-H is also another good experience for Corfield since he has made many friends. He has also taken some good life lessons from 4-H. "I've learned that you want to work hard and if you want to win grand champion, you have to work hard with your steers," said Coy Corfield.&nbsp;
