NOVEMBER 6, 2023 (NORTH PLATTE, NEB.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol apprehended a juvenile after a pursuit with a stolen vehicle Friday afternoon.

At approximately 4:45 p.m. Friday, a trooper was on patrol near mile marker 211 on Interstate 80 when he observed a pickup that just been reported stolen out of North Platte. The pickup was traveling at 97 miles per hour on eastbound I-80. The trooper attempted a traffic stop.

The pickup initially came to a stop on the shoulder, but accelerated and fled as soon as the trooper exited his patrol vehicle. The trooper initiated a pursuit.

During the pursuit, a Dawson County sheriff’s deputy was able to successfully deploy stop sticks to slow the vehicle, but the subject continued fleeing eastbound into Buffalo County. Near mile marker 262, a trooper deployed another set of stop sticks to bring the vehicle to a stop in the median. The driver was taken into custody without further incident.

The driver, a 17-year-old male from Hastings, was taken into custody for flight to avoid arrest, willful reckless driving, and theft by unlawful taking - $5,000+.

Approximately 100 people went through the fair and networked with 23 employers from across the state. The fair provided the public with an opportunity to learn about open positions in a variety of applied technology-related fields.

An emphasis was put on electrical, building construction, welding, HVAC, automotive, auto body, diesel and CDL industries.

The simulator, provided by the Nebraska Trucking Association, was new this year as was a windshield chip repair demonstration by&nbsp;Glass Doctor of North Platte.

LINCOLN — A Gering farmer has been sentenced to 36 months in prison and to pay more than $5 million in restitution for defrauding a local bank over several years.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, George Liakos, 64, had misrepresented to Great Western Bank the amount of crops he had in storage, the number of cattle he had, and the acreage he was farming&nbsp; in order to secure approximately $11 million in loans.

Liakos ran a farming operation near Bayard that grew beans, corn and sugar beets and raised cattle.

Last week, U.S. District John Gerrard sentenced Liakos to prison, and to pay $5.06 million in restitution to the bank, now owned by First State Bank.

The bank sustained a financial loss of $3.94 million, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Acting United States Attorney Susan Lehr said that the sentencing concluded nearly four years of investigation by the USDA.

Gering farmer sentenced to prison, ordered to pay $5 million in restitution

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/technology-transportation-safety-us-news-transportation-887894df4186c7a6b796dc39121d8f3c">automatic braking system</a>&nbsp;railroads were required to install several years ago needs improvement to better prevent collisions, federal safety investigators said in a report Wednesday.

The National Transportation Safety Board's&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ntsb.gov/investigations/AccidentReports/Reports/RIR2312.pdf">report</a>&nbsp;urged the Federal Railroad Administration and the industry to keep developing new technology that can be used to improve Positive Train Control systems. Their recommendations included at least one practical idea that railroads could likely implement relatively quickly.

Railroads spent 12 years and roughly $15 billion to develop and install the automatic braking system after Congress required it in 2008 in the wake of a collision between a commuter and freight train in California that killed 25 and injured more than 100.

The system, in place on about 58,000 miles (93,000 kilometers) of track nationwide since 2020, is designed to reduce human error by automatically stopping trains in certain situations, such as when they’re in danger of colliding, derailing because of excessive speed, entering tracks under maintenance or traveling the wrong direction.

The National Transportation Safety Board has said more than 150 train crashes since 1969 could have been prevented by Positive Train Control. The agency had recommended the automatic braking system for years before it was mandated by Congress, which extended the original 2015 deadline twice and gave railroads until the end of 2020 to complete the system.

The Association of American Railroads trade group said the industry is focused on “maintaining and advancing” the braking system and will keep looking for improvements.

“Railroads continue their work to enhance the system in ways that further improve safety and drive down accidents,” association spokesperson Jessica Kahanek said.

The Federal Railroad Administration didn't immediately comment on the new report.

Railroad safety has been a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/railroad-safety-derailments-tank-car-ohio-minnesota-c60f33b64e9c7dc05768a78ae20f3ce5">key concern</a>&nbsp;nationwide this year ever since a Norfolk Southern&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/pennsylvania-ohio-evacuations-fires-5d399dc745f51ef746e22828083d8591">train carrying hazardous materials derailed</a>&nbsp;in eastern Ohio and caught fire. The crash was likely caused by an&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/politics-pete-buttigieg-evacuations-ohio-explosions-64908a6416662b5866809387f210aee5">overheating bearing</a>&nbsp;and isn't one the automatic braking system is designed to prevent.

Railroads have&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/d6ca21953111e4d7b457bac02e5b6813">suggested</a>&nbsp;that the braking system could make the second crew member in cab locomotives unneeded, but unions have&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/588d6f7829c4836b9d2feff5c21a5097">long opposed</a>&nbsp;the idea of cutting train crews down to one person because of safety concerns.

The National Transportation Safety Board said there are several shortcomings of the current railroad braking system that developed partly because the system had to be designed so that every railroad's system would work on another railroad. Locomotives are often passed back and forth between railroads to help keep trains moving.

One of the more practical recommendations the board made was for railroads to develop a way to automatically turn the automatic braking system back on after it is manually disabled to allow for common switching movements that involve backing a train onto the main line through a red signal.

Currently, the automatic braking systems will remind an engineer to turn the system back on if they don’t do it within several miles of when the switching move was completed, but the safety board said a derailment can happen before that warning kicks in.

The braking system also uses a combination of a GPS sensor on the locomotive along with trackside sensors to monitor where the engine is and send signals to stop the train if an engineer misses a stop signal or if a crew is working on the tracks ahead.

The National Transportation Safety Board said that too often the system just imposes a low speed limit and relies on engineers to stop their trains in time, which doesn't always work.

The system also has a hard time preventing rear-end collisions, partly because it isn’t set up to track how long a train is and doesn't know where the back of a train is. The board recommended that the Federal Railroad Administration and railroads keep looking for a solution to this using a GPS sensor at the end of a train.

(AP) — The&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/technology-transportation-safety-us-news-transportation-887894df4186c7a6b796dc39121d8f3c">automatic braking system</a>&nbsp;railroads were required to install several years ago needs improvement to better prevent collisions, federal safety investigators said in a report Wednesday.The National Transportation Safety Board's&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ntsb.gov/investigations/AccidentReports/Reports/RIR2312.pdf">report</a>&nbsp;urged the Federal Railroad Administration and the industry to keep developing new technology that can be used to improve Positive Train Control systems. Their recommendations included at least one practical idea that railroads could likely implement relatively quickly.Railroads spent 12 years and roughly $15 billion to develop and install the automatic braking system after Congress required it in 2008 in the wake of a collision between a commuter and freight train in California that killed 25 and injured more than 100.The system, in place on about 58,000 miles (93,000 kilometers) of track nationwide since 2020, is designed to reduce human error by automatically stopping trains in certain situations, such as when they’re in danger of colliding, derailing because of excessive speed, entering tracks under maintenance or traveling the wrong direction.The National Transportation Safety Board has said more than 150 train crashes since 1969 could have been prevented by Positive Train Control. The agency had recommended the automatic braking system for years before it was mandated by Congress, which extended the original 2015 deadline twice and gave railroads until the end of 2020 to complete the system.The Association of American Railroads trade group said the industry is focused on “maintaining and advancing” the braking system and will keep looking for improvements.“Railroads continue their work to enhance the system in ways that further improve safety and drive down accidents,” association spokesperson Jessica Kahanek said.The Federal Railroad Administration didn't immediately comment on the new report.Railroad safety has been a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/railroad-safety-derailments-tank-car-ohio-minnesota-c60f33b64e9c7dc05768a78ae20f3ce5">key concern</a>&nbsp;nationwide this year ever since a Norfolk Southern&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/pennsylvania-ohio-evacuations-fires-5d399dc745f51ef746e22828083d8591">train carrying hazardous materials derailed</a>&nbsp;in eastern Ohio and caught fire. KCAD releases survey's for Keith County Housing Study

Jalyssa Hollander, of North Platte, is the winner of this year’s hood decorating contest at North Platte Community College. Blake Feather, of Sterling, Colo. earned second, and John Haller, of Tryon, was third.

The competition on Thursday provided students in the Auto Body Technology program with the opportunity to learn basic collision repair skills.

The students were given the challenge of repairing and repainting damaged vehicle hoods. Their work was then voted on by students and instructors in NPCC’s other applied technology programs.

8-year-old Pryce Gette was injured in a rollover car accident on Oct. 16th and is currently at the Children's Hospital in Denver. The proceeds from the fundraiser event will help cover expense costs on Gette's road to recovery. For the past 8 years, Operation Christmas Card (a local non-profit run by Char Merrill-Swalberg) has sent out care packages and cards to deployed military during the holiday season. The public is invited to participate in this event. Card writing materials will be provided.

It is a small way to express our immense gratitude and support for our dedicated military members serving far from home. We hope to make the holidays a little brighter for those who protect our freedom.”

Community Connection’s Mentoring looks for unique opportunities for mentoring pairs to be involved in service projects together. Operation Christmas Card is one such project – giving to others and honoring the service that others have given to our country and community. This will be the 5th year for this event. Mentoring is an effective way to engage individuals in meaningful service experiences and strengthen positive connections with families, schools, and the community. Caring and committed mentors give young people the extra boost they need to achieve success.

Domino’s Pizza has also supported this event for many years and is again providing a slice of pizza for those working on the project that evening. Donations for care packages are needed and can be can be dropped off the day of the event or at Community Connection’s office located at 121 N Dewey, in the Downtown Nebraskaland Bank building. North Platte, Neb., November 3, 2023 – Abe Anderson, CRNA, Great Plains Health Anesthesiology, is the Great Plains Health Caring Kind Award recipient for 2023.&nbsp;

A longstanding tradition of the Nebraska Hospital Association (NHA), the award pays&nbsp; tribute to outstanding healthcare employees who have demonstrated compassion for&nbsp; patients, cooperation with coworkers and dedication to excellence in the role they play&nbsp; at their facility.&nbsp;

Each year, NHA member hospitals and health care systems select one person from&nbsp; their organization to recognize at the NHA’s annual convention and special awards luncheon, held October 27 in La Vista.&nbsp;

“Abe is a wonderful example of being genuine, which is one of our Great Plains Health&nbsp; values," said Ivan Mitchell, Great Plains Health chief executive officer. “He is friendly,&nbsp; approachable and highly regarded by his patients and colleagues alike. We couldn't be&nbsp; more pleased to celebrate his hard work with this award.”&nbsp;

In the anesthesia department, Abe takes the time to talk with patients and explain their plan of care in a way that patients and their loved ones understand.&nbsp;

Post News Director sat down with North Platte native and Doane University Professor Eric Stearns about his opening reception going on tonight at the Prairie Art Center of his latest ceramic work in a show titled Ra•ku.&nbsp;&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE - Eric Stearns returns to North Platte and tonight at the Prairie Art Center is his opening reception of his latest ceramic work titled Ra•ku. The event goes from 5:30pm - 7:30pm at the PAC and you can chat with Stearns at the event. Check out the latest pieces of art Stearns has done.&nbsp;

Raku is a method of quickly firing ceramic artwork. Eric removes the pieces from the kiln at 1450° F, when they're still red hot. The art is given about a minute or two to cool before placing it in a metal container with a few sheets of newspaper. The paper ignites and smokes then the container is closed.&nbsp;

The reduction atmosphere affects the glaze colors, and the smoke turns unglazed parts of the clay black. The drastic thermal shock also produces cracking in the glaze —known as crazing since it is deliberate. The piece is removed from the container once cool and cleaned up to remove residual soot and ash, revealing the brilliant glazes.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Dawson Public Power District’s board of directors voted to approve the 2024 budget at their meeting on November 1. The district is planning for $61 million in expenses, which is about a million dollars less than the projected costs for 2023.

The directors discussed how to pay for planned capital projects. These are permanent additions and upgrades to the district’s power lines and substations. There is an option to use the district’s current cash reserves or to bond for the improvements, which would finance projects over the course of several years.

“We’ve used bonding in the past because it spreads the cost of improvements to more of the customer base who will use the substations and power lines. If you have a 20-year bond, the payments are distributed between today’s ratepayers and any new customers who will benefit from the project throughout the 20-year period,” explains board president Dan Muhlbach of Kearney. “We’re fortunate to have the option to choose either bonding or using cash for these projects. It is a testament to the stability of the district.”

Dawson PPD will begin the 2024 construction projects and the board will decide about potential bonding in the future. Bond rates can vary, which could make financing more or less favorable.

Some 2024 capital projects are carryover items from 2023. Major manufacturer delays have extended projects.

 <li>During the 2023 irrigation season, Nebraska Public Power District signaled Dawson PPD load management control for 99 hours. This is fewer hours than the 2022 season. Irrigation energy sales for 2023 were comparable to kilowatt hours sold in 2021 and 2016.</li><li>In September, the district added $956,000 to the value of capital assets. So far in 2023, a total of $6.57 million has been added to plant. The 2023 improvements have been paid for using margins and cash reserves.</li><li>The annual inventory of materials is underway. Items were counted in October. A full report of the inventory will be provided to the board in December.</li><li>The district is anticipating final information about a Nebraska Department of Transportation project on Highway 83, south of North Platte. Power lines will need to be moved to accommodate the changes.</li><li>General Manager Gwen Kautz reported that a recent NPPD customer meeting included information about the increased interest in economic development projects and technologies that could be used for future power generation.</li><li>Director Joe Jeffrey attended the Nebraska Wind and Solar Conference. Jeffrey summarized a presentation about recycling wind turbine blades.</li>

Union Pacific's famed&nbsp;<a href="https://www.up.com/up/heritage/steam/4014/index.htm">Big Boy No. 4014</a>, the world’s largest steam locomotive, will return to the rails in 2024 for a tour celebrating the railroad’s deep history and connection to communities, and its employees. The tour is expected to reach all four corners of Union Pacific’s 23-state system with anticipated stops in:

“As we move forward at Union Pacific, we remember where we came from; the Big Boy represents the history of Union Pacific and the United States,” said Union Pacific CEO Jim Vena. “When No. 4014 comes to town, we will celebrate with the communities where we operate, our employees and their families. Together, we will marvel at how far technology has brought us.”

No. 4014 is the only Big Boy in operation today. Weighing in at 1.1 million pounds, it was restored in 2019 to celebrate the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.up.com/up/heritage/steam-meet/index.htm">150th anniversary of the transcontinental railroad’s completion</a>. Twenty-five Big Boy locomotives were built for Union Pacific to haul heavy freight during World War II, but only eight still exist. The other seven are on display around the United States.

Tour dates and route information will be released in 2024. In addition to public stops, Union Pacific employees and their families will be invited along the route.

North Platte, NE- NebraskaLand University is proud to announce the acceptance of thirty-seven area high school seniors into its program. On Monday, November 6, 2023, these students will learn about strategies to pay for their college education without an unhealthy reliance on student loans.

The program, instructed by Ty Lucas, Executive Vice President Chief Lending Officer at NebraskaLand Bank, will provide students with the knowledge and tools to make informed decisions about their college financing. Students will learn about the true cost of borrowing and the potential future financial obligations that come with graduating with student loans. The difference between private loans, federal loans, and other types of financial aid will also be discussed.

NebraskaLand University is committed to helping students make informed financial decisions in their future. With the help of&nbsp;Senior and Executive Officers at NebraskaLand Bank at&nbsp;NebraskaLand Bank, these high school seniors will be well-equipped to make the best decisions for their future.

NebraskaLand University consists of six courses covering important topics such as budgeting, savings, credit, loans, career and wealth development, and identity theft protection. Upon completion of the program and meeting all requirements, graduates will be awarded a $250.00 academic scholarship. Additionally, graduates compete in an essay contest for a chance to win a greater scholarship. The first-place winner will receive $1,000, the second-place winner $750, and the third-place winner $500.

Students accepted include Taehya Baca, Jensen Becher, Ellie Blakely, Ceiden Childears, Maci Cox, Karlee Denny, Ava Dimas, Krysta Eckhoff, Lance Gifford, Parker Ginn, Chloe Guo, Hailey Guthrie, James Heirigs, Enlai Hou, Kaylee King, Will Krondak, William Martinez, Eva McCreery, Brena Melton, Jarrett Miles, Haily Miller, Layton Moss, Alayna Nielsen, Landon O’Brien, Gracie Persinger, Boston Pettera, Helana Pettit, Andy Prokop, Adrienna Quiroga, Brylie Robinson, Gracie Seamann, Rian Teets, Billy Tolstedt, Alie Vaughn, Vanessa Wood, and Jordan Yonkers.

These thirty-seven students, represent diverse backgrounds and a myriad of interests. From National Honor Society, Dance, Cheer, Athletics, Pre Med Club, Rodeo, FBLA, FFA, Student Council, Student Government, Journalism, Boy Scouts, Skills USA, Band, Choirs, Quiz Bowl, and Theatre, these remarkable students possess the potential to truly make a difference in the community.

NebraskaLand University Welcomes Thirty-Seven Students

On October 30th, a single engine plane crashed in the yard of a residence in the 1400 Block of East C Street in McCook, Nebraska. There were two occupants aboard the plane. The occupants were identified as pilot, Clifton Coffman age 79, who passed away from his injuries, and his passenger, Henry Ritcher age 65, who is being treated for his injuries. NTSB and FAA are investigating the crash. Both occupants were from Shreveport, Louisiana.

RED WILLOW COUNTY, Neb. —One person died in a small plane crash just before noon Monday in southwest Nebraska.

The small plane crashed 1/8 of a mile southwest of the McCook Ben Nelson Regional Airport property, according to McCook City Manager Nate Schneider.&nbsp;

There were two occupants in the airplane. First responders found one deceased, and the second occupant was transported to the Community Hospital of McCook for treatment.

City of McCook personnel were on the scene of the crash and have contacted the appropriate federal agencies.&nbsp;

Officials secured the crash site and it will be maintained until investigators from the appropriate federal agencies arrive.&nbsp; Officials have not released names of the pilot or passenger.&nbsp;&nbsp;
