NP First Responders receives goodies on National First Responders Day

OCTOBER 30, 2023 (KEARNEY, NEB.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— The Nebraska State Patrol is investigating multiple fatal crashes that occurred during this weekend’s winter weather across much of the state. Troopers responded to over 100 incidents between Saturday and Sunday morning.

Saturday evening at approximately 11:50 p.m., NSP was dispatched to a single vehicle crash on I-80 at mile marker 189, near Maxwell. Troopers arrived to find a Toyota pickup resting on its side in the westbound lanes with bystanders providing aid to an unresponsive person who had been ejected from the vehicle. A trooper utilized an AED in an attempt to revive the person.

The person, who had been a passenger in the pickup, was identified as Bernardo Jimenez Benavidez, 19, of York. He was transported to Great Plains Hospital where he was pronounced deceased. The three other occupants of the pickup were also transported to the hospital with what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries. Preliminary investigation shows that the eastbound pickup lost control during winter driving conditions, rolled, and came to rest in the westbound lanes. The crash remains under investigation.

A short time later, at approximately 12:30 a.m. Sunday, troopers was dispatched to a vehicle on fire at mile marker 277 on I-80, near Kearney. Upon arrival, troopers and Buffalo County deputies located a two-vehicle crash, with one vehicle fully engulfed. Preliminary investigation shows that a Ford F-150 was westbound on I-80, when it lost control in winter driving conditions, crossed the median, and struck an eastbound semi. The F-150 then caught fire.

The driver of the F-150, identified as Issa Juma Abdalla, 49, of Lexington, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The semi driver was not injured. The crash remains under investigation.

In addition to those crash investigations, troopers responded to 38 crashes, performed 51 motorist assists, and helped local agencies with 27 additional incidents. NSP reminds all motorists to check the 511 Nebraska system for information about road conditions during winter weather events. Any motorist in need of help can call the NSP Highway Helpline at *55.

Lincoln County Employees honored for years of service

On August 29th, 2023, The Dundy County Sheriff's Office received a report of a stolen vehicles which had been taken from farmstead in rural Dundy County. Deputies from this office them began speaking with officers from surrounding agencies and we learned of other vehicle thefts in Hitchcock and Perkins County.

On September 27th, 2023, one of those vehicle's a Nissan Exterra was located and recovered in rural Chase County.&nbsp;

October 2nd, 2023, The Dundy County Sheriff's office received information from Keith County Sheriff's Office of suspects and a location of another stolen vehicle from Dundy County, which was than located and recovered by Keith County Sheriff's Deputies.&nbsp;

Dundy County Sheriff's Office continued to keep in constant contact with other agencies about these vehicle thefts. Throughout the investigation, it was learned through video evidence that the vehicle suspect was driving a white Chevrolet Pickup, was also connected to the vehicle thefts in both Hitchcock County and Perkins County.

On October 27th, 2023, Chief Deputy King and Deputy Jones went to speak with our suspect, 29-year-old of Ogallala while he was in custody in Keith County Jail on unrelated charges. Deputy Jones did an excellent job on this interview and Patrik Reiman confessed not only to the vehicle thefts in Dundy County, but to the vehicle thefts in Hitchcock and Perkins Counties as well.

Patrik also gave Deputy Jones the location of the GMC Sierra which had been stolen from Hitchcock County in August. Dundy County Sgt. Lucci was given vague information about the location of the stolen vehicles and was able to locate that vehicle and Rural Dundy County. That vehicle has since been returned to the owner. The investigation into other involved person continues and we will update information as we can.

Visit North Platte operates under an agreement with the Lincoln County Board of Commissioners to&nbsp; facilitate the Nebraska Visitors Development Act. Grant funds, marketing, and operating expenses for&nbsp; Visit North Platte are funded by lodging taxes collected and remitted by lodging properties from&nbsp; overnight stays in Lincoln County.&nbsp;

The Visit North Platte Board of Directors approved grant funding at the monthly meeting held on&nbsp; October 25, 2023. The applications totaled $3,105 in requests and a total of $3,105 was awarded.&nbsp;

• Approved $1,855 in promotional and incentive funding to North Platte Pickleball for their&nbsp; Platte Valley Paddle Battle Tournament. The North Platte Pickleball Club is hosting a&nbsp; tournament on March 23-24, 2024, at the North Platte Recreation Center. As the sport of&nbsp; pickleball continues to grow in popularity, hosting tournaments like the Platte Valley Paddle&nbsp; Battle give our community the opportunity to draw in competitors from surrounding&nbsp; communities while also offering recreational opportunities for our local residents.&nbsp;

• Approved $1,250 in promotional and incentive funding to Dusty Trails for their guided Sandhill&nbsp; Crane and Prairie Chicken Tours. These funds will be used to promote the Sandhill Crane and&nbsp; Prairie Chicken tours through online advertising and to purchase new signage for the tours. The&nbsp; largest saturation of the Sandhill Crane migration is something that can only be experienced in&nbsp; central Nebraska. According to a study conducted in 2017, the overall economic impact of the&nbsp; annual migration on central Nebraska was $14.3 million, and it supported 182 year-round&nbsp; equivalent jobs. Local tourism related to birding has been on the rise in Lincoln County and has a&nbsp; growing economic impact on our area.&nbsp;

The next round of funding is now open, with a January 1 deadline for events or projects occurring in&nbsp; April, May, and June of 2024. These applications will be considered at the regular monthly Board of&nbsp; Directors meeting scheduled for January 24, 2024. Anyone interested in submitting a grant application is&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE - The First United Methodist Church in North Platte will be hosting its annual Trunk or Treat event this Sunday from 4:00pm - 5:30pm in the southwest corner of the church. The event will also include a free will donation hotdog and chili feed. Over 30.000 pieces of candy are expected to be at the event. Door prizes and live music will also be taking place during the event.&nbsp;

Last year, the church did an experiment with a texting service for prizes and that service is back for a 2nd year. You can text TREAT to 308-730-4040 and be entered to win a prize from many local businesses. Texting TREAT to the number will also give you clues for prizes as well. Must be present to win. Guests can text that number now to get entered for prizes, clues will come out Sunday.&nbsp;

With potential weather coming this weekend, the church does have a backup plan of moving the event inside. That decision will be made Sunday. If you would like to learn more about the event, check out the podcast above.&nbsp;

Lincoln, NE– October 26, 2023–Troy Bauer of Cozad is the fifth winner of a 2023 Ford F-150 XLT 4x4 Crew Cab Flex Fuel truck in the 28th edition of the Nebraska Lottery’s $2 Truck$ &amp; Buck$ Scratch game.

Bauer purchased his winning Truck$ &amp; Buck$ ticket at Ampride at 2700 Plum Creek Parkway in Lexington. On Tuesday, Nebraska Lottery officials presented him with his new truck.

After a Saturday evening trip to the store, Bauer realized he’d forgotten something on his shopping list. It’s lucky he did, he said, otherwise he probably wouldn’t be driving home in a new pickup.

Bauer popped into Ampride to grab what he’d forgotten and was checking out when Truck$ &amp; Buck$ caught his eye. He bought a few tickets and headed home to scratch them.

When he saw he’d won the truck, Bauer said he didn’t know if he was reading it right.

“It took me a couple hours to make sure,” he said. “You just think it’s too good to be true. It was pretty exciting.”

Anxious because it was a Saturday and he’d have to wait until Monday to confirm his ticket with the Nebraska Lottery, Bauer called his kids to tell them the good news.

They were excited and so was he that he’d be able to upgrade from his 2002 Chevy Suburban.

“That thing’s getting pretty tired,” Bauer said. “It’s beautiful timing.”

Golden Spike Tower Drive Thru Trick or Treat postponed to Halloween night due to weekend weather forecast

Mid-Plains Community College will host a Getting Retirement Right class at five of its campuses in November.

The class is designed for those who are serious about having a more secure retirement. It will be taught by Marc Werkmeister, certified financial planner.

Whether thinking about retirement, nearing retirement or already retired, it is important to know the major threats to retirement and strategies to help minimize those threats, according Werkmeister.

He believes preparing for retirement is the single most important financial challenge people currently face. During his class, Werkmeister will explain new truths and techniques to help individuals prepare for what’s ahead.

MPCC to offer retirement planning class in five communities

NORTH PLATTE - The Lincoln County Board of REALTORS would like to congratulate Nelson Jett of Great Plains Reality in North Platte, who was recently elected as the Nebraska REALTORS Association's Central Region Director for the term 1/1/2024-12/31/2025. Jett is excited to assume the role starting in January of 2024. He looks forward to helping to ensuring that the voices of Central Nebraska are heard at the State level during his term.

Jett is currently the President of the Lincoln County Board of REALTORS. Other state roles currently include service as a State RPAC Trustee, and currently Vice Chair of the Government Affairs Committee. He has previously served as the Convention Committee Chair and the Young Professionals Network Committee Chair.

Jett is also Nationally involved and serves as a Region 8 Representative on the National Association of REALTORS Young Professionals Advisory Board, and on the National RPAC Participation Council as well.

NORTH PLATTE – The 21st annual G.R.E.E.N. fundraising event for the North Platte Catholic Schools was&nbsp; held on Saturday, October 21st at St. Patrick High School. Generating Resources for Educational&nbsp; Excellence Now is the largest single event of the year for the North Platte Catholic Schools Endowment Trust, which serves as the fundraising arm for the Catholic school system. 

The event hosted over 225 guests Saturday evening at St. Pat’s High School and featured nearly 150 items on silent and live&nbsp; auctions. Guests also played Heads or Tails, took their chances at the Wine &amp; Whiskey Walls, entered&nbsp; the Lucky Lotto drawing, and purchased tickets for 3 Spirit Wagons. Though not yet final, Endowment&nbsp; Director Wendy Dodson estimates net proceeds will exceed the $195,000 mark. She says that, “Our&nbsp; G.R.E.E.N. supporters were extremely generous, as always, and we could not be more grateful.”&nbsp;

A portion of the funds raised at G.R.E.E.N. will be designated for two special projects at the North Platte&nbsp; Catholic Schools. Over $47,000 was generated through the Fund-A-Need appeal, which will help with subscription expenses for K-12 online learning programs, and the Great Teaching Fund to provide higher&nbsp; and continuing education opportunities for teachers. Over $7,800 was donated for Wish List items&nbsp; submitted by McDaid, Little Leprechaun, and St. Pat’s teachers.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Nikki Torres of North Platte won the $1,000 Heads or Tails prize. G.R.E.E.N. Lucky Lotto winners were&nbsp; Jered Jorgensen of North Platte and Tom Downey of Lexington. Three winners took home Spirit Wagons&nbsp; valued at $1,000 each… They were: Eric Steffes, Jason Seberger, and Brendan Lynes.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Dodson notes that many thanks are in order to the volunteers and sponsors who helped with G.R.E.E.N. Marty Troshynski donated his services catering the entire meal, which was served by St. Pat’s Jr/Sr High&nbsp; students. The Lincoln County Feedyard LLC donated all of the beef served at the event, and Noffsinger&nbsp; family farms donated potatoes. Dodson also noted that Skyline and Big Red Liquors were corporate&nbsp; sponsors for beverage service.

Cell Phones in the Workplace will be the subject of a new class at the Mid-Plains Community College Imperial Campus. The roundtable session is scheduled for noon to 1 p.m. (MST) Nov. 8.

Instructor Amy Sabatka will discuss common difficulties of managing cell phone use at work and effective cell phone use policies.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb - Michael Ray will headline the concert at the Lincoln County Fair in North Platte on July 26, 2024. The announcement came Thursday morning. Drew Phillips Band will open for Ray. Tickets go on sale Friday, October 27 at www.lincofair.com for only $30/ticket.

Michael Ray was born in Eustis, Florida. He was inspired by his grandfather Amos "Wilson" Roach, who played music for him and taught him how to play guitar, in addition to having him perform at assisted living centers. Ray chose to form a band in southern Florida after graduating high school, and a disc jockey at WPCV began playing his music. He independently released an album in 2010, which was discovered by manager Tony Conway.

Ray was mentored by John Rich of Big &amp; Rich on the singing competition The Next: Fame Is at Your Doorstep, which he won. He and Rich co-wrote Big &amp; Rich's 2015 single, "Run Away with You".[2] After winning the competition, Ray was signed to Warner Bros. Records Nashville. His first EP, Tour Bootleg, was released in 2014. Two of the EP's tracks, "Kiss You in the Morning" (which went to number one on the Country Airplay charts in 2015) and "Think a Little Less," would later appear on his self-titled second album, released in 2015, becoming Ray's first and third singles, respectively. The track "Real Men Love Jesus" was named as Ray's second single. Ray supported the album with a tour.

On June 16, 2017, Ray released the single "Get to You" ahead of his third studio album, Amos.[3] Upon the album's release in 2018, it would produce two more singles: "One That Got Away" and "Her World or Mine." Both of his albums were produced by Scott Hendricks.

In September 2020, Ray released the single "Whiskey and Rain" ahead of his fourth studio album, originally set to be released in 2021.
