NORTH PLATTE, NEB - The 2023 Hershey Fall Festival is coming up on August 26, 2023. The festival, which lasts all day, starts with a parade in the morning and will cap off with a concert at night. There are plenty of events throughout the day for families and folks to enjoy.&nbsp;

The festival is held by the Lions club every year and is a way the Lion's club gives back to the community. "The Hershey Fall Festival is our annual celebration out in Hershey, put on by the Hershey's Lions club and it's just our way to give back to the community and fundraiser for our club for the year," said Justin Petska. "We do a lot of different community improvement projects and help other non-profits with their projects."&nbsp;

This year, the parade which starts at 10:30 central time will kick off the event that starts on main street and ends at the park and there will be a free will donation prime rib feed that will begin at the park at the conclusion of the parade. Highlighting the concert will be Muscadine Bloodline and the concert will take place on main street where the stage will be set up by the railroad walkway. The 10th Annual C.E.B. Memorial 100th Meridian 5K and 10K road races and 1 mile kids run will be held in downtown Cozad on Saturday, August 12, 2023. In order to celebrate the 10thanniversary of this revival of a race that took place in the 1980s, we are adding a 1 mile kids run and other surprises for the 10th anniversary. The road race honors Claude E. Berreckman, who passed away in 2013. The proceeds from the race fund scholarships given in his name to Cozad High School students.&nbsp;

100th Meridian 5K/10K - Cozad 

Canon Rath talked with committee members of the North Platte Young Professionals Cassie Condon, Jacob Rissler, and Pat Jacobson about the Big Idea North Platte 2023 event.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE, NEB – The 4th annual Big Idea North Platte is coming back to North Platte with the live event taking place October 18th, 2023, at Venue 304 in North Platte. The Big Idea North Platte 2023 event is an opportunity where community members can share their ideas, product, or event new business. It’s also a great way to earn prize money or scholarship money.&nbsp;

The North Platte Young Professionals are hosting the event. The North Platte Young Professionals strives to retain young leaders ages 21-40 in North Platte. “We are a subcommittee of the North Platte Area Chamber and Development corporation and North Platte Young Professionals, it's our mission to create and retain young leaders,” said North Platte Young Professional Committee Member Cassie Condon.&nbsp;

The Big Idea North Platte 2023 is a great opportunity for community members who want to pitch an idea, a product, or their own business. The competition lets folks compete against one another, but also shows the creativity that an individual can come up. “This event was created to give you an opportunity to network with professionals and provide educational value that is readily available outside your normal circles that you are talking too,” said Condon. “It’s a great way to get your idea out there and reviewed by local experts.”&nbsp;

Last year, the Big Idea event only hosted one category. At the time, youths ages 10-18, if they won, they would receive scholarship money for their idea. This year, the youth category is back sponsored by Mid Plains Community College. Winners in the youth category can earn themselves a scholarship. “We decided to put in some scholarships, so for that youth category we are giving away some great scholarships for students,” said North Platte Young Professional Committee Member Jacob Rissler. “We love being part of the economic development, retaining young professionals and also keeping great ideas in the community.” The youth category has three places you can win. Third place earns you $500, second place is $1,000, and first place is $2,500. The scholarship money can be used at Mid Plains North Platte campus, McCook’s campus, or any of Mid Plans community campuses. &nbsp;

The community category this year is being sponsored by Eagle Communication through the Schmidt Foundation. Just like last year, in honor of the Schmidt Foundation, Eagle Communications is donating a generous amount to this year's top three winners and to invest in the idea of members of the North Platte Community. “The Schmidt foundation has generously donated big prizes this year,” said North Platte Young Professional Committee Member Pat Jacobson. “Third place is $3,000, second place is $7,000, and the first-place winner is $10,000 plus marketing packages that Eagle will provide.”&nbsp;

The Hot Sheets: July 20th, 2023

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Union Pacific will renew its push for one-person train crews later this summer when the railroad tests out the idea of having a conductor in a truck respond to problems on trains in Nebraska and Colorado.

The railroad will continue using two crew members on its trains during the test, but officials say this could bolster their case in future negotiations for cutting crew size if it is successful.

UP's Jason Pinder confirmed the pilot program Monday when he testified against a proposed Kansas rule that would require two-person crews. The Omaha, Nebraska-based railroad has long been a leading proponent in the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/railroads-to-renew-push-for-one-man-crews-in-contract-talks-3f97553f0ec9474784249fa4a17e1169">industry's push</a>&nbsp;to go down to one-person crews.

This plan had to be&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nebraska-business-transportation-cce1888bacfb5b76a57a0b9843e21e82">shelved earlier this year</a>&nbsp;after the Transportation Division of the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers union that represents conductors opposed it. But that union later agreed to let Union Pacific test out ground-based conductors as long as it maintained current crew sizes and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/railroad-safety-train-crews-derailment-union-pacific-8bc04b745bf49337ad94cec87d2df92b">agreed to drop ongoing negotiations</a>&nbsp;over reducing crew size. Even though UP abandoned its current proposal to eliminate conductors on trains, the railroad can reintroduce the idea in the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/business-economy-government-and-politics-207229bcd558b6a6c1d58f3f85e2d804">next contract negotiations</a>&nbsp;that begin in 2025.

Union officials say there has been no change in SMART-TD's longstanding opposition to the idea of eliminating the second person in the cab of a locomotive because of safety concerns. In fact, the union's Ty Dragoo testified Monday that “We're huge proponents” of the proposed Kansas rule.

If that state's regulators approve, Kansas would join at least nine other states that have&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/railroads-freight-safety-derailment-state-laws-42fa5ddae7486e44c7383def082d31a3">passed laws</a>&nbsp;requiring two-man crews. The others are California, Wisconsin, Arizona, West Virginia. Minnesota, Washington, Nevada, Colorado and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ohio-transportation-budget-rail-safety-derailment-bc3e97140763a5accd8bc40cfa664611">Ohio</a>. Railroad safety has been a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/railroad-safety-derailments-tank-car-ohio-minnesota-c60f33b64e9c7dc05768a78ae20f3ce5">key focus nationwide</a>&nbsp;this year in the wake of a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/pennsylvania-ohio-evacuations-fires-5d399dc745f51ef746e22828083d8591">fiery February derailment</a>&nbsp;in eastern Ohio that&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ohio-train-derailment-updates-bf5a60de2243cd6f7f730096aa33294c">forced evacuations</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ohio-train-derailment-contamination-fears-brockovich-fc68b402096a4f5f8598a657f7e399f8">created lingering health concerns</a>&nbsp;and several other rail crashes.

While all the major freight railroads continue to use two-person crews, a number of short-line railroads have already been using one-person crews for years. Chuck Baker, the president of the American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association, testified at the Kansas hearing Monday that many of those smaller railroads have also found other benefits of having a conductor based in a truck such as having them adjust switches ahead of a train or go ahead to visit with customers before a train arrives.

But all the rail unions have long opposed moving conductors out of locomotives, arguing they help monitor track conditions and radio communications while ensuring that engineers remain alert and respond to any emergencies or mechanical problems on the train. In the case of a derailment or collision, conductors are the first ones to respond before any additional help can arrive.

The unions say the value of having a conductor onboard has been demonstrated time and time again including during a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/707da58c97b742369022db304099d78c">fiery 2013 derailment</a>&nbsp;near Casselton, North Dakota, when the conductor was able to help separate undamaged tank cars filled with crude oil from the rest of the train so they could be pulled away from the fire.

Critics of the idea of moving conductors out of the locomotive cabs have also raised practical questions about whether a conductor driving a truck would even be able to reach a train in remote locations where no roads are near the tracks. Plus, a conductor in a truck could be delayed in traffic.

A major highway runs next to the tracks in Western Nebraska that UP plans to test, but it may be harder for a conductor in a truck to reach trains in the mountainous territory of Colorado.

Union Pacific railroad to renew push for 1-person crews by testing conductors in trucks

NORTH PLATTE, NEB - The Livin Out Loud Festival is rolling upon us fast. Livin Out Loud, which is heading into its 12th year, is the largest outdoor Christian festival that welcomes Christians from all around to Gothenburg for the two-day event. "We have the largest outdoor Christian festival ever year in Gothenburg about 15 - 20,000 people show up," said Koby Rickertsen. "It's a great deal for the area."&nbsp;

The event is free to the public. There will be plenty of artists that are performing during the event. Also, tons of food truck vendors will be there. NORTH PLATTE, NEB – The July 18th North Platte City Council meeting has officially come and gone and there were different discussion points from the meeting. Some of the highlighted topic points featured consent appointments, property changes, annexation near the 2300 block of 18th street, changes to telecommunications, creating an occupation tax on the ownership of skills games, and lastly&nbsp;special presentations from students from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.&nbsp;

The council talked about some land on the northwest part of North Platte, that’s a block just adjacent to the North Platte community. During the meeting, there has been talk about possibly selling the land. “There is some interest in possibly selling that lot and maybe have that developed and its generally a practice if the property&nbsp;is adjacent to the community and if they want to be made improvements or developed,” said Council President Jim Nisley. “We have nixed that property and it’s a proper processor to do and it’s a good thing we will get some housing.”&nbsp;

Kaytlin Cardoso, of North Platte, participates in an animation class at North Platte Community College Monday morning. The class and a music video camp are both part of the Calibraska Arts Initiative that NPCC hosts every year.

Calibraska uses the arts to build community, culture and inclusive educational exchanges between Nebraskans and primarily California-based industry professionals. A total of 25 students are participating in the NPCC offerings this week.

(Sutherland, Nebraska, July 17, 2023) – Artisans and home-based businesses that make it, grow it, refurbish it, bake it or sell it are invited to be a part of the 2023 Makers Market Craft and Vendor Fair. Experienced vendors told organizers that the 2022 show was the best they had ever attended and many of the vendors from last year’s event have already registered for the 2023 show.

First and Walnut Streets in Sutherland will be shut down on Sunday August 27 from 10am to 3pm for the Makers Market Craft and Vendor Fair. Already vendors from national direct-sales businesses and local arts and crafters have signed up for booths with wares ranging from baked goods to art pieces made from spent shotgun shells and everything in between. Only one representative from each national direct-sales company will be allowed at the event.

The Makers Market will be held along First Street and Walnut Streets, adjacent to Highway 30. Many of the vendors are donating items that will be offered in a raffle hosted by the Chamber. The expanded footprint of the event has made several more booths available for vendors. Along Walnut Street will be food trucks and the KidZone with a massive T-Rex inflatable slide and bounce house.

Booths are 12 x 12 or 10 x 12 and are $45. The event begins at 12 pm and the judging portion will be at 4 pm mountain time. The award ceremony will take place at 5 pm to award each 1st place winner, as well as the People's Choice Award. Concessions will be sold at the event from 10:30 am - 4:30 pm.&nbsp;

Canon Rath talks with Lori Hansen about the Miracle League of Lincoln County event going on July 23rd as the Miracle League will be taking on the North Platte Plainsmen in a 2-inning exhibition game before the Plainsmen game against the Denver Cougars.

NORTH PLATTE, NEB - The Miracle League of Lincoln County who have been playing all summer long get ready to match up with their next opponent, the North Platte Plainsmen this Sunday, July 29th at 3 pm. The Miracle League is a nonprofit, nationwide organization that helps special needs athletes play the sport of baseball. The Miracle League removes the barriers that keep children with mental and physical disabilities off the baseball field and lets them experience the joy of America’s favorite pastime. "The Miracle League of Lincoln County is our special needs baseball program, we started out as Buddy Ball several years ago and we have since revamped and became the Miracle League of Lincoln County," said Lori Hansen.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Before the Plainsmen game, there will be a two-inning exhibition game between the Miracle League and the Plainsmen. The Miracle League played against the FNBO Nationals senior team back on May 25th, and the Plainsmen were in attendance for the game. The Plainsmen invited the Miracle League for a 2-inning exhibition contest before Sunday's game.&nbsp;

Following the exhibition contest, the Miracle League athletes will be participating in different activities throughout the Plainsmen game. This includes joining the team for starting lineups, participating in the in between contest, and so much more.&nbsp;

The Plainsmen are donating a portion of ticket sales back to the Miracle League of Lincoln County. This is one of many fundraiser events the Miracle league is hosting to raise money for an adaptive field for their athletes to play their games on. “An adaptive field is completely different than a regular turf college size field so were super excited to have that in North Platte and use it for other sports besides baseball,” said Hansen.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE, NEB - The Lincoln County Fair is not far from us as the fair is scheduled July 26th-July 31st. The fair features many different events that can be enjoyable for everyone in the family. Amanda Carr is back on the podcast to discuss the concert, goat roping, and pig wrestling.

One of the most anticipated events this year is the pig wrestling contest. The event will be held in the evening but also will features teams of 4. Curtis, [July 17, 2023]&nbsp;- Maryam Sule, a Rural Fellow from Bellevue, Nebraska, has experienced small-town summer living at the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture (NCTA) in Curtis, Nebraska. Maryam will be a sophomore chemical engineering student at UNL in the fall.

Part of the Rural Prosperity Nebraska outreach programs since 2013, the Rural Fellowships connect college students with rural Nebraska communities as part of a collaborative service-learning experience.

Maryam began the summer researching new ways to increase alumni engagement at NCTA. The significance of alumni connections came to light for her while spending time in the library's alumni room exploring the history from its inception in 1913 as the Nebraska School of Agriculture.

Next came the June gathering known as "Aggie" Alumni Day, where she met every generation of alum. The team explored several ideas and action plans to improve the alumni database and create new ways for former students to reconnect with their classmates and the college. Maryam then embarked upon a plan to create a trivia campaign on social media. It is evident through enthusiastic participation that this initiative will be an easily sustained activity for the future.

Maryam and the team (including grounds supervisor Tzi Martinez, intern Olivia Taylor, a senior civil engineering student at UNL, and the dean's and recruiting office) then researched and planned the development of a new NCTA Arboretum Walking Tour of campus. As an affiliated site of the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum since 1985, campus leaders recognized the opportunity to increase campus visitation and maximize its educational impact by building upon this designation.&nbsp;

This ambitious project mapped and identified the trees and trails on campus to create a walking tour. The project primarily aims to showcase the diverse array of trees on campus and general information about the college, along with some history and trivia.

It will enhance the visitor experience with a voice-narrated audio tour they can access online or a printed brochure available at local attractions or a campus kiosk. These interactive guides appeal to broad audiences, from school group tours to garden clubs, history buffs, and individuals.

Transformative experiences have marked Maryam's time in Curtis. She has embraced the agricultural heritage of rural Nebraska, participating in time-honored practices such as branding cattle and horseback riding at the picturesque Leu Ranch. These encounters have deepened her understanding of the agricultural industry and its essential role in Nebraska's economy.

The warmth and hospitality of the Curtis community have left a lasting impact on Maryam. She vividly recalls attending a Fourth of July breakfast at the local golf course, where she was captivated by the natural beauty and laid-back atmosphere. Maryam expresses her deep appreciation for the hardworking students she met at NCTA, particularly members of the ranch crew, who inspired her with their dedication and passion for their work.

Project supervisor and associate dean Dr. Jennifer McConville shared, "Working with the Fellows this summer has been an amazing experience. For NCTA, we set a few lofty goals and have accomplished beneficial projects, including alumni relations and a walking tour for everyone to enjoy and learn something new about trees and our college!"

NCTA invites the public to the Rural Fellow Presentation on Thursday, July 20, at 7:00 p.m. The event will begin at the Education Center auditorium on the NCTA campus in Curtis. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about Maryam's projects firsthand and explore the self-guided Arboretum Walking Tour.

As Maryam's journey as a Rural Fellow comes to a close, she expresses her heartfelt gratitude to the Rural Prosperity Nebraska program for providing her with this life-changing experience.
