Canon Rath talks with Lori Hansen about the Miracle League of Lincoln County event going on July 23rd as the Miracle League will be taking on the North Platte Plainsmen in a 2-inning exhibition game before the Plainsmen game against the Denver Cougars.

NORTH PLATTE, NEB - The Miracle League of Lincoln County who have been playing all summer long get ready to match up with their next opponent, the North Platte Plainsmen this Sunday, July 29th at 3 pm. The Miracle League is a nonprofit, nationwide organization that helps special needs athletes play the sport of baseball. The Miracle League removes the barriers that keep children with mental and physical disabilities off the baseball field and lets them experience the joy of America’s favorite pastime. "The Miracle League of Lincoln County is our special needs baseball program, we started out as Buddy Ball several years ago and we have since revamped and became the Miracle League of Lincoln County," said Lori Hansen.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Before the Plainsmen game, there will be a two-inning exhibition game between the Miracle League and the Plainsmen. The Miracle League played against the FNBO Nationals senior team back on May 25th, and the Plainsmen were in attendance for the game. The Plainsmen invited the Miracle League for a 2-inning exhibition contest before Sunday's game.&nbsp;

Following the exhibition contest, the Miracle League athletes will be participating in different activities throughout the Plainsmen game. This includes joining the team for starting lineups, participating in the in between contest, and so much more.&nbsp;

The Plainsmen are donating a portion of ticket sales back to the Miracle League of Lincoln County. This is one of many fundraiser events the Miracle league is hosting to raise money for an adaptive field for their athletes to play their games on. “An adaptive field is completely different than a regular turf college size field so were super excited to have that in North Platte and use it for other sports besides baseball,” said Hansen.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE, NEB - The Lincoln County Fair is not far from us as the fair is scheduled July 26th-July 31st. The fair features many different events that can be enjoyable for everyone in the family. Amanda Carr is back on the podcast to discuss the concert, goat roping, and pig wrestling.

One of the most anticipated events this year is the pig wrestling contest. The event will be held in the evening but also will features teams of 4. "We will start registration at 5, we will pig wrestle at 6 and its teams of 4. Adult teams are $40 and it can be men, women or mixed," said Amanda Carr. "Children teams are $20 and it can be 4 of them and however they want to do it."

Curtis, [July 17, 2023]&nbsp;- Maryam Sule, a Rural Fellow from Bellevue, Nebraska, has experienced small-town summer living at the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture (NCTA) in Curtis, Nebraska. Maryam will be a sophomore chemical engineering student at UNL in the fall.

Part of the Rural Prosperity Nebraska outreach programs since 2013, the Rural Fellowships connect college students with rural Nebraska communities as part of a collaborative service-learning experience.

Maryam began the summer researching new ways to increase alumni engagement at NCTA. The significance of alumni connections came to light for her while spending time in the library's alumni room exploring the history from its inception in 1913 as the Nebraska School of Agriculture.

Next came the June gathering known as "Aggie" Alumni Day, where she met every generation of alum. The team explored several ideas and action plans to improve the alumni database and create new ways for former students to reconnect with their classmates and the college. Maryam then embarked upon a plan to create a trivia campaign on social media. It is evident through enthusiastic participation that this initiative will be an easily sustained activity for the future.

Maryam and the team (including grounds supervisor Tzi Martinez, intern Olivia Taylor, a senior civil engineering student at UNL, and the dean's and recruiting office) then researched and planned the development of a new NCTA Arboretum Walking Tour of campus. As an affiliated site of the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum since 1985, campus leaders recognized the opportunity to increase campus visitation and maximize its educational impact by building upon this designation.&nbsp;

This ambitious project mapped and identified the trees and trails on campus to create a walking tour. The project primarily aims to showcase the diverse array of trees on campus and general information about the college, along with some history and trivia.

It will enhance the visitor experience with a voice-narrated audio tour they can access online or a printed brochure available at local attractions or a campus kiosk. These interactive guides appeal to broad audiences, from school group tours to garden clubs, history buffs, and individuals.

Transformative experiences have marked Maryam's time in Curtis. She has embraced the agricultural heritage of rural Nebraska, participating in time-honored practices such as branding cattle and horseback riding at the picturesque Leu Ranch. These encounters have deepened her understanding of the agricultural industry and its essential role in Nebraska's economy.

The warmth and hospitality of the Curtis community have left a lasting impact on Maryam. She vividly recalls attending a Fourth of July breakfast at the local golf course, where she was captivated by the natural beauty and laid-back atmosphere. Maryam expresses her deep appreciation for the hardworking students she met at NCTA, particularly members of the ranch crew, who inspired her with their dedication and passion for their work.

Project supervisor and associate dean Dr. Jennifer McConville shared, "Working with the Fellows this summer has been an amazing experience. For NCTA, we set a few lofty goals and have accomplished beneficial projects, including alumni relations and a walking tour for everyone to enjoy and learn something new about trees and our college!"

NCTA invites the public to the Rural Fellow Presentation on Thursday, July 20, at 7:00 p.m. The event will begin at the Education Center auditorium on the NCTA campus in Curtis. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about Maryam's projects firsthand and explore the self-guided Arboretum Walking Tour.

As Maryam's journey as a Rural Fellow comes to a close, she expresses her heartfelt gratitude to the Rural Prosperity Nebraska program for providing her with this life-changing experience. The Hot Sheets: July 16th, 2023

North Platte, Nebraska - Rotarians in the North Platte Sunrise Rotary club grabbed rakes, weed eaters, and utilized a skid-steer loader to help clean up the South Beach of Lake Maloney the morning of Saturday, July 15, assisting Nebraska Public Power District with upkeep. Sunrise Rotarian Leland Poppe led the service project and worked with NPPD Land Management Coordinator, Brian Hope, to schedule the day of service.&nbsp;

Poppe, and his wife, Cathy, have previously maintained the South Beach and picked up trash to keep the area ready for visitors. “Access to Lake Maloney was ranked third in the GreenPlay recreation study, we enjoy helping keep the South Beach high quality for public access” said Poppe. Fellow Sunrisers, as club members are known, joined to help pick up trash and fill in holes in the sand.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE, NEB - The Prairie Arts Center in North Platte held a postcard competition for High Schoolers to participate. This year, there were two winners. In first place was Chloe King with an oil rendition of the PAC Building. 

Michaela Gieber also won the digital art piece. The postcards will be available for purchase in the Prairie Art Center gift shop. The Prairie Art Center is open Tuesday - Sunday and hours are 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Prairie Arts Center's High School Postcard Winners 

OGALLALA, NEB – Hayden Outdoors Real Estate officially opened a brand-new location just north of Lake McConaughy. The grand opening of the location welcomed residents from area towns in Keith County, the Keith County Chamber of Commerce, and many members from the Hayden Outdoors Real Estate team. Rick Kusel will be the agent at the Lake McConaughy location.&nbsp;

Hayden Outdoors currently operates in over 30 states and has over 200 brokers and agents that work for the company. This is Hayden Outdoors's second Nebraska location with the other location In Imperial but have agents throughout the state. The company opened its doors in 1976 and their headquarters are in Windsor, Colorado. &nbsp;

The North Platte Police Department is attempting to locate a stolen bicycle. The Bicycle was stolen from McDonalds on Monday July 10th 2023. The stolen bike was a 2022 neon blue and yellow Trek Marlin 5 mountain bike with a blue chain and gel padded seat. If anyone has any information regarding this bicycle please contact the North Platte Police Department by calling 308-535-6789.

North Platte Police Department has located the stolen bike

The 2023 class of AHEC Scholars includes health professions students in dentistry, nursing, paramedic, pharmacy, physical therapy, physical therapy assistant, physician assistant, medicine, radiologic technology and speech therapy.&nbsp;The graduates represent&nbsp;health profession programs at Central Community College, Northeast Community College, Regional West Medical Center School of Radiologic Technology,&nbsp;Southeast Community College,&nbsp;University of Nebraska at Kearney, University of Nebraska Medical Center&nbsp;and&nbsp;Western Nebraska Community College.

During the two-year program, students engaged with a variety of health professionals, community leaders and potential employers. They gained insight into health care issues, cultural and environmental factors, and community resources in Nebraska to better understand future patients and communities they will serve.

The AHEC Scholars Program is a part of the Nebraska AHEC Program, which is based in the UNMC Department of Family Medicine. The program is designed to continue working with rural and underserved communities across the state through five AHEC centers that collectively serve all 93 counties. City Of North Platte Engineering Department Press Release

The City of North Platte Engineering Departments’ contractor, Hall Brothers, will begin their seal&nbsp; coating operation and will continue this project for 2-3 weeks on asphalt streets that have been overlayed within&nbsp; the last ten years or so. You will be notified with a printed flier which will be posted on cars parked along the&nbsp; street and placed in the doors of residences along the project streets. Remove all vehicles and trailers by 7:00 a.m.&nbsp;

Pull vehicles as far as possible onto your property to avoid the&nbsp; possibility of flying debris and/or overspray of oil onto your&nbsp; vehicle.&nbsp;

Vehicles left on street will be towed away from the work area. Turn off all sprinklers.&nbsp;

2. Coat of oil and gravel will be&nbsp; applied.&nbsp;

3. After asphalt has cured - within a week or 2 the gravel&nbsp; will be removed.

Drive cautiously on sealed streets until excess material has been removed.&nbsp;

ONCE ASPHALT IS CURED, USUALLY WITHIN ONE DAY, REGULAR PARKING CAN RESUME.&nbsp;

NOTE THAT LIQUID ASPHALT WILL STICK TO SHOES AND TIRES AND IS DIFFICULT TO&nbsp; REMOVE. KEEP CHILDREN AND PETS AWAY FROM THE STREET.

JULY 13, 2023 (SCOTTSBLUFF, NEB.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— As thousands gather in Scotts Bluff County for Oregon Trail Days, troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol will be working to reduce the likelihood of serious crashes around the event.

“Oregon Trail Days brings people from near and far, so we’ll be working diligently to keep our local residents and visitors safe this weekend,” said Major Jeff Roby, NSP Western Operations Major. “As folks participate in numerous events through Sunday, we encourage everyone to plan ahead to have a sober driver.”

Oregon Trail Days is marking its 102nd&nbsp;consecutive year in 2023. The events run from today, July 13, through Sunday, July 16, at several locations around Gering.

Troopers will be performing high visibility patrols on roadways throughout Scotts Bluff County as part of the effort. The Nebraska Department of Transportation – Highway Safety Office (NDOT-HSO) has designated Scotts Bluff County as a priority county for 2023. NSP’s effort is made possible thanks in part to a grant for $1,770 from NDOT-HSO.

The City of North Platte will be closing Oak Street for repairs from Philip Avenue to Reid Avenue&nbsp; starting Monday, July 17, 2023, and will last approximately one week or until project is complete.&nbsp;
