The Hot Sheets: July 13th, 2023

The North Platte Airport Authority intends to enhance the customer experience and drive economic development opportunities to western Nebraska by constructing a new passenger terminal at the North Platte Regional Airport. The airport serves a vital role in rural Nebraska's economy as the only primary airport within its 14,000 square mile, 15 county service area. It supports recent, local economic development successes including ongoing construction of a 500,000 square foot beef processing facility near the airport, bringing an estimated 875 jobs to North Platte, and a proposed 300-acre rail park in nearby Hershey, NE. The project is intended to become a source of pride for the North Platte community, creating a modern landmark in western Nebraska.&nbsp;

The existing terminal is dated and space constrained, unable to provide an acceptable level of service for current and forecasted demand. The existing terminal was constructed in 1952 and was designed for pre-9/11 traveler behavior with "50 seats for 50 passengers" in the secure hold room with little space for luggage and amenities. The addition of jet bridge boarding, modern restrooms, natural light, and food and beverage service post-security will meet today's airport user expectations.

The airport is pursuing a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification for the new terminal, which will feature modern, energy efficient building systems, a mass timber structure, and cross-laminated timber roofing leading to reduced embodied carbon compared to steel construction. The project includes capturing, storing, and re-using stormwater runoff to satisfy non-potable water demand, photovoltaic skylight glass to provide renewable energy for building systems, and a Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP) geothermal heating and cooling system to reduce energy demand. In addition, the terminal parking lot will feature multi-modal space for local public transit service, rideshare, and electric vehicle charging stations.

Finally, the existing terminal building has several accessibility shortcomings that will be addressed with the new facility. The new terminal will exceed minimum ADA standards and feature a boarding bridge, code compliant restrooms, a mother’s room, and accommodations for service animals to provide equitable access for all travelers.&nbsp;

The Airport Authority initiated the design phase of the project in late 2022 and intends to be “shovel-ready” by fall 2023. The design team has completed the early design phases of the project and is soliciting feedback from airport users and the North Platte community before proceeding with final drawings and specifications.

The construction schedule is to-be-determined based on availability of federal funds for the project. The Airport Authority is pursuing several competitive federal grant opportunities to support the construction of the new terminal in the next 2-3 years, including programs established by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) of 2021.

A New Terminal Building for Lee Bird Field

LINCOLN, NEB - July 11 ,2023 - Mitchell Allen of Hershey is the second winner of a 2023 Ford F-150 XLT 4x4 Crew Cab Flex Fuel truck in the 28th edition of the Nebraska Lottery’s $2 Truck$ &amp; Buck$ Scratch game.

Allen purchased his winning Truck$ &amp; Buck$ ticket at Gary’s Super Foods at 1921 West A St. in North Platte.

Allen’s been a Truck$ &amp; Buck$ player for a few years and joked that a win wasn’t completely unexpected.

“Finally,” he said, laughing. “It’s great, I was pretty excited.”

He played a few Truck$ &amp; Buck$ tickets at Gary’s Super Foods while shopping for groceries but wasn’t having much luck. After taking his groceries out to the car, he decided to grab one more just for good measure. It wound up being the winner.

Allen picked up his truck at Gary’s Super Foods on July 11, which just happened to be his fifth wedding anniversary.

“It’s beautiful,” he said. “I couldn’t ask for anything more.”

The 28th edition of the Nebraska Lottery’s popular $2 Truck$ &amp; Buck$ Scratch game features the 2023 Ford F-150 XLT 4x4 SuperCrew Flex Fuel truck as its top prize. Hershey Man Claims Second Truck$ & Buck$ Truck

Lincoln, NE – July 12, 2023 – Due to high sales, the Multi-State Lottery Association has increased the estimated jackpot amount for the Wednesday, July 12 Powerball drawing to $750 million or $378.8 million with the cash option selected.

The Powerball jackpot starts at $20 million and continues to grow each drawing until it is won. There have been 35 consecutive Powerball drawings since April 22 without a jackpot winner.

Ten jackpots ranging from $2.5 million to $365 million have been won in Nebraska since the Nebraska Lottery began offering Powerball in July of 1994. The largest Powerball jackpot won in Nebraska occurred in February 2006 when a group of eight coworkers at the ConAgra Foods ham and corned beef plant in Lincoln split a $365 million jackpot.

The nomination deadline is 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8.

Lake McConaughy Area Outdoor Report for week of July 10

NORTH PLATTE, NEB - The Community Health Fair is going on this Friday and Saturday at North Platte Highschool. The health fair is heading into its second year after last year it was held for Hispanic focus healthcare fair. "As we look at this year our community continues to diversify, we thought it would be important to that up to the entire community especially focusing on minorities and underserved," said TinaMaria Fernandez. "We reached out to many other entities in the community, got everyone at the table and were throwing a large community health fair."&nbsp;

There are many services offered to families but a big goal that the health fair is committed to is helping families get their kids ready for school whether its a physicals, check up, or shots. "Our goal is to try and help them have a one stop shop to get enrolled for school," said Elizabeth Thayer. "We are looking for families who need vaccines, who need physicals for their kids, who need those pre offerings before they can enroll and then we are going to be able to get them enrolled right then at the high school."&nbsp;

The event is free to the public and offers a wide variety of activities to do as well. There will be educational presentations throughout the event, activities for the kids to do while they are waiting and they can earn free items. There will also be language access provided to non-English speakers. The event is at North Platte High School from Friday 4pm-7pm central time and Saturday 1pm - 3pm central time. NORTH PLATTE, NEB - La Feria de Salud Comunitaria se llevará a cabo este viernes y sábado en la North Platte Highschool.&nbsp; Este será el segundo año de la feria de saludo después de que el año pasado la feria fue enfocada en la atención médica de los Hispanos. "Mientras miramos este año, nuestra comunidad continúa diversificándose, pensamos que sería importante para toda la comunidad, especialmente centrándonos en las minorías y los desatendidos", dijo TinaMaria Fernandez. "Nos pusimos en contacto con muchas otras entidades de la comunidad, reunimos a todos en la mesa y organizamos una gran feria de salud comunitaria". North Platte, NE:&nbsp;NebraskaLand Bank is proud to announce the success of its employee-led service project initiative, The Project [Blank], in celebration of our 25th anniversary. Through this initiative, our employees came together to create numerous service projects that made a positive impact on the community.

The Ghost Tour event of the Fox Playhouse which benefitted the North Platte Community Playhouse and raised over $3,200 for the organization. The tour provided a unique and memorable experience for all who attended. We are proud of our employees who put so much effort into creating this event and raising such a significant amount of money for the North Platte Community Playhouse.

"The Project Blank initiative is just one way we can encourage everyone to get involved and support organizations like the North Platte Community Playhouse. We are thrilled with the success of The Ghost Tour event and proud of our committee members for their hard work and dedication," said committee member Chantel Burch.

As an additional reward, Team “Boo Crew” received an extra $500 donated by NebraskaLand Bank as a prize for winning 3rd place in overall projects via employee vote. This money will also go towards supporting the North Platte Community Playhouse.

The 1st place, “Project Hope”, received $1,000 to support their mission of raising awareness about borderline homeless or homeless students near our branch location in Rock Springs Wyoming. “Totally Pawsome” claimed 2nd place and won $750 by organizing a breakfast burrito fundraiser to raise money for the North Platte Animal Shelter. Not only did they raise funds but they also put in the effort to clean out old rocks and replace them with new ones in the dog exercise area. Lastly, Project Bridge of Hope received a consolation prize of $250 to further their initiative and donated the funds to the Bridge of Hope to stock wish list items.

DJ GRANT FISHER SET TO IGNITE THE NIGHT AT CHASE COUNTY FAIR WITH PRE & AFTER PARTIES

(North Platte, Nebraska, July 29th, 2023) It’s back! Legion Combat Sports, sponsored in part by Visit North Platte, will be bringing back the Buffalo Bill Brawl boxing tournament this year in North Platte. The host gym is long-time local business and martial arts training facility Top Tier.&nbsp;

This event started in 2020 as the very first USA Boxing event in the entire world post Covid-19 shut downs. Now, in its fourth year, the Buffalo Bill Brawl boasts being Nebraska’s Largest Amateur Boxing tournament, a featured Grassroots tournament by USA Boxing, and proudly hosts around 100 boxers from all over Nebraska, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, New Mexico, Montana, South Dakota, Michigan, Utah, and more! Boxers start at age eight and compete through adulthood. Fans can expect to see different levels of experience and skills across the board, including that of stand-out Junior Olympic 2022 gold and 2023 silver medalist, Nasir Clinton.&nbsp;

Clinton started training at the age of eight after watching boxing with his dad his entire life. He credits boxing and his parents’ encouragement for his motivation to stay out of trouble. He trains out of Independence, Missouri.&nbsp;

Clinton attended the Buffalo Bill Brawl for the first time last year after his father saw the live-stream of the event and said “We should go!” Clinton is registered to return this year, stating the great event set-up and “really nice belts” as the reason for his return, hoping to take home his second championship belt this year.&nbsp;

In addition to boxers traveling in, the BBB will showcase the talents of many local boxers from a variety of training facilities. One of those local competitors is high school student James Davis. Davis has been training at Top Tier since the 5th grade.&nbsp;

Davis said, “I don’t know where I would be today without boxing. It has really upped my confidence and courage to try new things. I was a scared little kid who didn’t want to go and explore the world. I started boxing and got this new mentality of ‘I can do anything!’ I’m a completely different person.”&nbsp;

Davis encourages the community to come out and support the boxers on July 29 and 30.&nbsp;

The tournament will pull out all the stops for those visiting our community and local fans alike. Highlights include an RA Productions produced live stream with commentators, lights, and championship belts awarded. Thanks to community partner Eagle Communications, Sunday’s competition will also be on air at FM 98.1. Additional community support from Kwik Stop and North Platte Inn &amp; Suites allows the event to welcome officials with travel expenses and hotel rooms paid by the tournament. This event is also sponsored in part by Visit North Platte and Great Plains Realty.

The schedule of events includes a bronze-level coaches clinic beginning on July 27, boxer weigh-ins and coaches social on July 28 at Wild Bill’s Fun Center/Brigham’s Taproom, as well as two days of competition July 29-30 at the D&amp;N Event Center. July 29 will kick off with doors opening at 11:00am and competition beginning at 12:00. A second session will take place that evening starting around 5:00pm. Sunday July 30 will start back up at noon for some impressive championship match-ups.&nbsp;

The public is encouraged to come out and support these boxers during both days of competition. Admission is $20 per day. Children under 10 and Veterans have free entry to the event.&nbsp;

This event is also sponsored in part by Visit North Platte and Great Plains Realty.The schedule of events includes a bronze-level coaches clinic beginning on July 27, boxer weigh-ins and coaches social on July 28 at Wild Bill’s Fun Center/Brigham’s Taproom, as well as two days of competition July 29-30 at the D&amp;N Event Center. July 29 will kick off with doors opening at 11:00am and competition beginning at 12:00. A second session will take place that evening starting around 5:00pm. Sunday July 30 will start back up at noon for some impressive championship match-ups.&nbsp;The public is encouraged to come out and support these boxers during both days of competition. Admission is $20 per day. (North Platte, NE 7/10/2023) –D &amp; N EVENT CENTER dandnnp.com is conducting a shoe drive fundraiser July 1 – August 31 to raise funds for CYS Youth Sports Leagues. D &amp; N EVENT CENTER will earn funds based on the total weight of the pairs of gently worn, used and new shoes collected, as Funds2Orgs will issue a check for the collected shoes. Those dollars will benefit CYS Youth Sports Leagues. Anyone can help by donating gently worn, used and new shoes at multiple drop off locations in town, request porch pickup or during our community drive by day August 12th from 2pm – 4pm in the D &amp; N parking lot at 501 E Walker Rd.

All donated shoes will then be redistributed throughout the Funds2Orgs network of micro-enterprise (small business) partners. Funds2Orgs works with micro-entrepreneurs in helping them create, maintain and grow small businesses in developing countries where economic opportunity and jobs are limited. Proceeds from the sales of the shoes collected in shoe drive fundraisers are used to feed, clothe and house their families. One budding entrepreneur in Haiti even earned enough to send to her son to law school.

"We are excited about our shoe drive," said Amy Parker, Grant/Media Manager. "We know that most people have extra shoes in their closets they would like to donate to us. By doing so, we raise money for CYS, and we have the chance to help families in developing nations who need economic opportunities. It's a win-win for everyone.”

By donating gently worn, used and new shoes to the D &amp; N Shoe Drive, the shoes will be given a second chance and make a difference in people’s lives around the world.

NORTH PLATTE, NEB - The Lincoln County Fair is scheduled for the last week of July and time is ticking as we get closer to the events. Amanda Carr joins the podcast to talk about when animal showings begin, highlights a few events, and also talks about the Easton Corbin concert.

The Lincoln County Fair is a smaller fair in terms of not having a carnival however that's where the events and animal showing comes into play "We do have a smaller fair that's family orientated." said Amanda Carr. "We have a lot of things for the kids to do and everything is free for the kids."

Lincoln, NE – July 10, 2023 – Due to high sales, the Multi-State Lottery Association has increased the estimated jackpot amount for the Monday, July 10 Powerball drawing to $675 million or $340.9 million with the cash option selected. This is the 9th largest jackpot in the history of the game.

The Powerball jackpot starts at $20 million and continues to grow each drawing until it is won. There have been 34 consecutive Powerball drawings since April 22 without a jackpot winner.

Severe Thunderstorm Watch for area until 9pm MDT

(Holdrege and Lexington, Neb.) July 7, 2023 – After the public announcement of the Project Meadowlark liquid fertilizer plant in Gothenburg, many are wondering why The Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District and Dawson Public Power District were involved. Was it because of the proposed merger? The answer may surprise you.

In short, no, Project Meadowlark does not need Central and Dawson&nbsp;<a>PPD</a>&nbsp;to merge to become Platte River Public Power and Irrigation District. However, there is great mutual benefit to&nbsp;<a>PRPPID</a>&nbsp;becoming the energy supplier of Project Meadowlark.

The energy needs of the $750 million liquid fertilizer plant are massive. Project Meadowlark is expected to consume over 200 megawatts of electricity, or more than the amount of energy used by the City of Kearney. It has the potential to boost Project Meadowlark’s rank to the top three electrical consumers among Nebraska Public Power District and their wholesale public power partner’s heavyweight industrial customers.

“As Project Meadowlark moved to a business model that would require a large amount of electrical energy, the City of Gothenburg, Central, Dawson PPD and&nbsp;<a>NPPD</a>&nbsp;immediately began to look for the best solutions to help deliver the eventual carbon-free energy they would need,” said Central General Manager Devin Brundage. “The solution is the focus of our work together.”

Currently, Central is a wholesale electrical provider of renewable hydropower, meaning that the district only sells to distributors of power but not to the end-use consumer. Dawson PPD is a distributor of electrical energy to the end-use consumer but does not generate electricity. Both the City of Gothenburg and Dawson PPD are wholesale power customers supplied by NPPD. Together, these four entities are finding collaborative solutions to electrically serve Project Meadowlark.

“Project Meadowlark didn't need to work with PRPPID; Project Meadowlark&nbsp;wanted&nbsp;to work with PRPPID,” Brundage said. “It required everyone to think about ‘what’s the best way we could we do this,’ not ‘how have we always done this.’ Because of the value we can bring to their success, it translates to the success of everyone in the PRPPID footprint.”

As a merged district, PRPPID will be able to both generate clean renewable energy and distribute it to Project Meadowlark, resulting in about ten percent of the liquid fertilizer facility’s energy use. This is an example of one of the many ways a merged district can serve central Nebraska.

The water used by Project Meadowlark for its liquid fertilizer production will not be provided by Central or PRPPID.&nbsp;Instead, it uses a combination of the City of Gothenburg’s wastewater and offset water through Central Platte Natural Resource District.

Discussion of Project Meadowlark, owned by JWC Gburg, LLC, began in 2017 with the Gothenburg Improvement Company and the City of Gothenburg. Initially, the project was going to use the standard industry process of using natural gas as the source of hydrogen to manufacture the liquid fertilizer. However, in the spring of 2022, Project Meadowlark changed its approach to producing liquid fertilizer by using electricity – specifically seeking renewable energy to increase the value of its carbon neutral product.

In 2020, Central and Dawson PPD began its discussions about a potential merger. The districts were negotiating the final terms of the merger when the boards were informed of the potential project in August 2022, about two years after their merger discussions and study began.

Given the competitive marketplace, Project Meadowlark’s developers required Central and Dawson PPD directors and management to sign nondisclosure agreements. In June 2023, the City of Gothenburg and GIC officially announced Project Meadowlark.

Now that the announcement has been made, Central and Dawson PPD can confirm that the non-disclosure agreements pertained solely to Project Meadowlark, not to the merger. All aspects of the merger, including the consultant analysis, the agreed upon plan of consolidation and the operational plans have been publicly discussed and made available to the public.

“The Meadowlark project was not a prerequisite for PRPPID to establish its presence,” said Dawson PPD General Manager Gwen Kautz. “Meadowlark merely represents one among numerous potential opportunities that will undoubtedly arise for the benefit of central Nebraska.
