Lincoln, NE – July 7, 2023 – Two big jackpots are up for grabs in the next Powerball® and Mega Millions® drawings. Because of these high jackpots, the Nebraska Lottery reminds customers to play responsibly.

A string of drawings without a jackpot winner has grown the estimated Powerball jackpot to its highest level since January. There have been 33 consecutive drawings since April 22 without a jackpot winner. This run has grown the estimated jackpot for the Saturday, July 8 drawing to $590 million or $304.8 million with the cash option selected.

Mega Millions has also seen its jackpot grow over the last few months. There have been 22 drawings since April 21 without a jackpot winner. The estimated jackpot for the Friday, July 7 drawing is $427 million or $220.6 million with the cash option selected.

The dual jackpot runs have produced some large Nebraska winners.

The largest Mega Millions jackpot on record occurred in October 2018 when one winner in South Carolina won a $1.537 billion jackpot. The largest Powerball jackpot on record occurred in November 2022 when one winner in California won a $2.040 billion jackpot.

NORTH PLATTE, NEB - Amateur boxing is coming to North Platte tomorrow, July 8th as the 2nd Annual Royal Rumble event is happening at the D&amp;N Event Center. The event features boxers from the ages of 8 and up to participate in the Royal Rumble Event. "In amateur boxing, the youngest your allowed to compete at is 8 years old, so we are going to have 8 years old to up to some 20 year old's," said coach Josh Roberts. "There really is no oldest age to compete in amateurs, I've seen 40 year old's jump in the ring and do there thing."

Weigh ins for the event goes on from 10 am - 12 pm. The doors open at 2 pm and the fights start at 3 pm. Tickets are $10 for admission, 12 and under are $5, and finally 3 and under are free.

NORTH PLATTE, NEB – The 41st Governor of Nebraska Jim Pillen made a stop in&nbsp;North Platte Thursday morning alongside with new members of his cabinet. The governor made an appearance at the North Platte-Lee Bird Regional Airport and the event was held in the Lee Bird Airport Conference room. Members of his cabinet that was with him included Nebraska Department of Transportation Director Vicki Kramer, newly appointed State Broadband Director Patrick Haggerty, and new Department of Economic Development Director K.C. Belitz. &nbsp;

Governor Pillen opened remarks about how blessed he is to be the 41st Govenor of Nebraska. Governor Pillen was sworn in on January 5th, 2023, as he replaced former Governor Pete Ricketts. “Just one, I am extraordinarily privileged to be the 41st governor of Nebraska, I still get choked up and get goosebumps when I try to express it’s a privilege beyond words,” said Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen. “There's a number of extraordinarily moments and experiences in first 9 months since the election.” After making his opening remarks, Pillen then transitioned towards different issues that are going on in the state of Nebraska.&nbsp;

During his remarks about issues going on in the state, the governor talked about property taxes, road conditions, infrastructures, improving mental health are just a few that he talked about. He also went in more depth about his three new 5 star recruits he calls and what each Indvidual can bring to their position. Newly appointed State Broadband Director Patrick Haggerty hasn’t officially started his new position but was traveling with Pillen and the team during the fly around event. “This gives me an opportunity to come back home, not on the job yet but I have been working with this federal program the office has been created around for some time now on the private side,” said State Broadband Director Patrick Haggerty. “I think I bring a lot of experience and I’ve worked in multiple states so I can bring models but were going to do what's best for Nebraska.”&nbsp;

K.C. Belitz, who is the new Department of Economic Development Director, has only been on the job since Wednesday, and wants to bring the state together as a team. “We need to be doing more as a team, so I want you all to know that your state government and this cabinet Team Pillen is interested in doing work together,” said Department of Economic Development Director K.C. Belitz. “Us Nebraskans, we love our silos, but we are going to create a few less here with state government and that’s a big deal.”&nbsp;

Lastly, Nebraska Department of Transportation Director Vicki Kramer who was also in attendance today has been working on the job for 6 months now with Governor Pillen. Kramer, who is a Nebraska native has worked in public service for a long time and uses Nebraska roads to travel. “Spent my career in Nebraska and traveling the roads and knowing the system and working from federal to state government,” said Nebraska Department of Transportation Vicki Kramer. “I know highway 83 is a big topic here and it will finally get some work done, working through these projects that matter to the communities is what we are focus on.”&nbsp;

After all Governor Pillen and his three cabinet members were done with their introduction, they opened the floor to questions from the attendees at the event. North Platte High School (NPHS) announces the addition of baseball as a spring sports option for the 2023-2024 school year. Interest in adding baseball for NPHS students has grown immensely, and adding this option as a sport for our students is an easy decision for the high school.

Jimmie Rhodes, Director of NPHS Activities, announced the decision to include baseball as a spring sports option earlier this month. In a conversation with Rhodes, he stated, ‘We are in pursuit of offering quality programs that interest our students at North Platte High School.’ Rhodes added, ‘I have fielded multiple questions about adding baseball for our boys to NPHS and am excited to help make this dream a reality here at North Platte Public Schools.’

Baseball at North Platte High School is sanctioned by the Nebraska School Activities Association (NSAA) and will start its inaugural year with a limited schedule. July 6, 2023 (North Platte, Neb.) Due to forecasted inclement weather, the planned overnight closure of Leota Street between Dewey and Jeffers on July 6 has been postponed, and has been rescheduled for Monday July 10, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation.&nbsp;

The eastbound and westbound lanes of Leota will be closed beginning at 8:00 p.m., July 10 and are anticipated to be open by 7:00 a.m., July 11. Motorists are advised to utilize Francis Street during this time-period.&nbsp;

Paulsen Inc. of Cozad is the contractor for this project. The overnight closure will be for installation of storm sewer pipe underneath Leota Street.&nbsp; Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up, and to put phones&nbsp;down.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE, NEB - The July 5th North Platte City Council meeting has officially gone by and there were a handful of different discussion points on the agenda. The meeting took place Wednesday due to the 4th of July falling on a Tuesday. Some of the highlighted discussion points include extraterrestrial line which has been discussed the past few weeks about extending the city out, deacons point development, and New Haven housing on west A.&nbsp;

The final reading of ordinance 4129 took place yesterday at the city council meeting and the extraterritorial line has been extended. The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office completed its overtime enforcement during the NebraskaLand Days celebration. Deputies worked an overtime speed and alcohol enforcement grant provided by the Nebraska Department of Highway Safety. During the grant period Deputies had 241 contacts with the public. 

Those contacts lead to three drivers being arrested for driving under the influence, one driver being arrested for possession of meth and possession of a controlled substance and one driver arrested for an outstanding warrant. Citations were also issued for the following offenses:

 Forty-six for speeding, five for driving under suspension, four for minor in possession, one for procuring alcohol to a minor and contributing to the delinquency of a minor, one for willful reckless driving, one for exhibition of acceleration, six for no proof of insurance, nine for no registration, one for no seatbelt, one for no child restraint and one for no motorcycle endorsement. Deputies also assisted 14 motorists during this time frame.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Canon Rath talked with Ruby and Hazie Uerling and 4-H Youth Development Extension Educator Caitlyn Jacobson about hippology.&nbsp;&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE, NEB - 4-H is America's largest youth development program across the United States that helps learn skills that will last a lifetime. The age requirement for 4-H is the ages of 8-18. The Lincoln County fair is coming up at the end of July and has many different 4-H events for members. For Ruby and Hazie Uerling, they are involved with hippology.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Hippology focuses on horses and there are many factors that are with hippology. "Hippology is part of the equine horse project and it's really the education portion of it, "said 4-H Youth Development Extension Educator Caitlyn Jacobson. "4-H'rs they take a written exam, do some horse judging, they identify some different equipment that's used with horses, and they identify different feeds and go through different scenarios."&nbsp;

Knowing horses can help get folks involved with hippology to learn more about the animals. "I just like horses in general cause there like big teddy bears," said Ruby Uerling. "I like to learn about them so I can I know what to do with my horse and take care of him."&nbsp;

For folks who want to compete in the horse show, they have to take hippology so it can count for the horse show. "Mostly at the beginning, I did hippology because you have to do it for it to count towards all around at the horse show and that's like whoever does the best overall can get a prize," said Hazie Uerling. "I started to do it because lately we have been going to state and I've won twice with my partners."&nbsp;

July 3, 2023 (North Platte, Neb.)- Weather permitting, an overnight closure will be in-place Thursday, July 6, on Leota Street between Dewey and Jeffers, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation.&nbsp;

The eastbound and westbound lanes of Leota will be closed beginning at 8:00 p.m. and are anticipated to be open by 7:00 a.m. Motorists are advised to utilize Francis Street during this time-period.&nbsp;

Paulsen Inc. of Cozad is the contractor for this project. The overnight closure will be for installation of storm sewer pipe underneath Leota Street.&nbsp;

Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up, and to put phones down.&nbsp;

The Hot Sheets: July 5th, 2023

July 3, 2023 (North Platte, Neb.)- Weather permitting, work will begin July 10, on Spur 56A, south of Maxwell, from reference post 3.86 to reference post 2.10, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation.&nbsp;

Simon Contractors Inc. of Cheyenne, Wyoming is the contractor for this project. Work includes the removal and reconstruction of two bridges at reference post 3.05 and 2.69, followed by asphalt resurfacing. Traffic will be maintained with traffic signals during bridge work, and flaggers and pilot car for asphalt resurfacing. A 10-foot width restriction will be in effect during bridge construction. Anticipated project completion is September 2024.&nbsp;

The purpose of this project is to preserve the transportation asset, improve the reliability of the transportation system and perpetuate the mobility of the traveling public.&nbsp;

Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up, and to put phones&nbsp;down.

The Hot Sheets: July 4th, 2023

OGALLALA - Officers were contacted in regard to multiple suspicious packages residents in the City of Ogallala received early last week. Officers investigated a package that was brought to the Ogallala Police Department, while conducting the investigation Officers discovered that the box is used by Apple to allow individuals to send in their devices. 

Officers made contact with Apple Company in regard to the situation and Apple advised that occasionally this will occur for Fraud. The information the Ogallala Police Department received was provided to the Global Security Investigations for Apple. 

Officers spoke with the Fraud investigator in the Global Security Investigations from Apple and it was explained that individuals will initiate the trade-in process and provide the address of innocent residents and the individuals who are attempting to defraud Apple will remain around the residences to attempt to intercept the packages in order to attempt fraud with Apple. 

The package was opened and there is nothing harmful within the package. Apple advised just to have individuals dispose of the boxes. Any questions or concerns you may speak with Officer Gorham with the Ogallala Police Department.

Lincoln County Raceway rescheduled races set for July 3rd

Cambridge, Ne - Early Sunday morning, (July 2, 2023) at approximately 2:05 am, the Frontier County Sheriff’s office received a reported sighting of Noah Koch, who had been missing since early Friday morning north of Cambridge near Medicine Creek Reservoir. Law Enforcement from multiple areas were dispatched to the location near the intersection of Road 728 and Road 402.  Furnas County Deputy Huntley arrived on scene first and was able to make contact with Noah. Deputy Huntley transported Noah to his home where he was reunited with his family safe and unharmed.

Koch's family along with emergency management had organized a search party on Saturday morning after they had found water bottles believed to have been with Noah.

The Frontier County Sheriff's office released this statement via their Facebook pager earlier today. "This has been a long search which ended with the best possible outcome. A huge thanks to all those involved who dedicated their time, effort, equipment and supplies including: Alma Volunteer Fire and Rescue, Oxford Fire and Rescue, Arapaho Fire and Rescue, Elwood Fire and Rescue, Beaver City Volunteer Fire Department, Wilsonville-Hendley Volunteer Fire Department, Farnam Volunteer Fire Department, Franklin Volunteer Fire Department, Cambridge Fire and Reacue, Indianola Fire and Rescue, Sides Aerial Application, Nebraska State Patrol, Nebraska Game and Parks, Furnas County Sheriff’s Office, Nance County Sheriff’s Office, The American Red Cross, Emergency Management and the hundreds of other volunteers and supporters!"

Canon Rath talks with Janet Mueller about the upcoming Sutherland 86th Annual Rodeo July 3rd-July 4th. The festivals begin July 1st with different events for everyone to enjoy.

NORTH PLATTE, NEB - The Sutherland 86th Annual Rodeo is set to begin July 1st. The four day festivities has events for everyone to enjoy. The rodeo is scheduled for July 3rd and July 4th in Sutherland. 86 years for this four day event brings the community together to have a great time. "It's a great family function as we have all sorts in the whole community of Sutherland that the whole family can come," said Janet Mueller. "Some events are on July 1st and 2nd, but the main things are on the 3rd and the 4th."

This year, the rodeo committee is happy to announce there are over 500 entries between the two events and for folks who are bull riding fans, there are 30 contestants who will be competing. There will also be a rodeo clown who will be performing an act both nights of the rodeo. Before the rodeo start at 7, there will be kid races and later in the evening there will be a calf scramble for both kids and adults.&nbsp;

The rodeo is&nbsp; Monday and Tuesday and tickets are $10 for Adults, Children Ages 6-12 are $5, and lastly kids under 5 get in for free. For a full list of times and events for the four day festivals, check the graphic below.&nbsp;
