MPCC recognizes employees for full-time service

&nbsp;(North Platte, Neb.) — The Leota Street intersection is now open. Francis Street will be closed west of Jeffers Street beginning today, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation. 

The west leg of the Jeffers and Francis Street intersection will be closed for both eastbound and westbound traffic. Motorists are advised to utilize alternate routes during this time-period. The closure is expected to be in place for approximately one month.

Paulsen, Inc. of Cozad is the contractor for this project. The closure is for installation of storm sewer, and construction of new concrete pavement at the Francis Street intersection.

Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up, and to put phones down.

Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office Press Release On October 8, Lincoln County Deputies and North Platte Fire and Rescue were dispatched to an injury accident involving a motorcycle.&nbsp; Further information was that the motorcycle had crashed and exploded.&nbsp; The accident was near the 2700 block of North Airport Road.&nbsp; While enroute deputies were advised that there were two motorcycles involved in the crash.&nbsp;

When deputies arrived one driver had been transported and the second was receiving medical aid from EMS and was about to be transported.&nbsp; &nbsp;North Platte Fire was extinguishing the burning motorcycle and a small grass fire that was caused by the burning vehicle.&nbsp; Deputies could see debris from the crash scattered for nearly a ¼ mile to the south of the vehicles.&nbsp; Several witnesses and a video from a nearby house confirmed that the vehicles accelerated heavily after crossing the railroad tracks near highway 30.&nbsp;

For some reason the motorcycles contacted each other at a very high rate of speed and crashed.&nbsp; &nbsp;The drivers were identified as 23-year-old Travis Roberts and 21-year-old Trevin Jeffs, both of North Platte.&nbsp; When deputies arrived at the hospital, both drivers were heavily sedated and receiving emergency care.&nbsp; A test for alcohol was not possible.&nbsp; Both drivers have many broken bones, and one driver will likely lose his leg.&nbsp;

&nbsp;(Lincoln, Neb.) – The location for the North Platte meeting has changed to Best Western Plus Conference Center, located at 3201 S Jeffers St. The Nebraska Broadband Office announced the availability of the new Nebraska Broadband Availability Map. The GIS map represents all served, underserved, and unserved broadband serviceable location across the state.&nbsp; 

As part of the map availability, there will be ongoing public engagement across the state including a series of eight public meetings and an open comment period from Sept. 14 to Oct. 14. During the open comment period the public will be asked to provide comments on the broadband map, including searching their addresses to verify level of highspeed internet access at their homes/businesses.

Cozad Chamber of Commerce Open House

The Robert Henri Museum and Art Gallery in Cozad, Nebraska is pleased to announce that it is about to embark on a momentous new chapter in the museum’s long and storied history. The project will take the institution to an even higher level and&nbsp;make it a national center for preserving and promoting the art and legacy of Robert Henri.

The museum has been making steady progress for almost forty years as it first preserved Henri’s boyhood home in the 1980s, and then constructed a nine-hundred square foot gallery to house its growing collection of his art in 2014.&nbsp;&nbsp;

First, the former American Legion building (to the north of&nbsp; the current gallery), will be demolished beginning on November 1,&nbsp; 2023. Unfortunately, it was beyond rehabilitation. Construction&nbsp; will then begin, and the current timeline is to open the new gallery&nbsp; on September 15, 2024, subject to the challenges of weather&nbsp; conditions and any other unforeseen delays of course.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The new gallery will be about five thousand square feet in size. It will allow the museum to geometrically expand our collection from our current seventeen paintings to more than thirty paintings. This new building will include state of the art climate control, fire protection, and security systems along with educational and exhibition space. It will include an outdoor patio area, gift shop, office and a serving kitchen.

The $3.5 million expansion will be paid for by grants, contributions and a&nbsp; very generous donation and matching commitment from patrons Larry and&nbsp; Tammy Paulsen of $2 million. Larry and Tammy have made the display of much&nbsp; of the artwork and exhibitions in our gallery possible through donations and&nbsp; loans. Larry’s mother, Shirley Paulsen, was one of the founders of our museum&nbsp; in the early 1980s.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Our current gallery will be converted into a new library and archives&nbsp; building as it is climate controlled and has a sophisticated security system. Once&nbsp; the interior of the new building is completed, we will begin to move our current&nbsp; collection of paintings and sketches to their new home. At the present time we&nbsp; are beginning to conduct research and design the new exhibits.&nbsp;

Donations can made by going to the museum’s website or mailing them to&nbsp; the museum directly and are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. We will&nbsp; provide regular updates as to our progress on our Facebook and web pages.&nbsp;

Museum Announces Plans for a New Art Gallery

Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) recommends getting regularly scheduled cancer screenings to raise the chances of early detection and make treatments easier and less expensive. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual campaign to raise awareness about the impact of breast cancer, and a good time to discuss screening with your doctor.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

•&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Each year in the United States, about 255,000 women get breast cancer and 42,000 women die from the disease.

•&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Except for skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer in U.S. women and remains the second leading cause of cancer death among women.

When breast cancer is detected early, and is detected in the localized stage, the 5-year relative survival rate is 99%. Early detection comes from scheduling regular clinical breast exams and mammograms. Women should talk with their doctors about when to start and how often they should have mammograms.

The National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (NBCCEDP) funds state programs to provide free breast and cervical cancer screening programs for medically underserved women. The Every Woman Matters program in Nebraska will pay for screenings for women who are uninsured and meet income requirements.

There are other things you can do to lower your risk of breast cancer including:

•&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Eating fruit and vegetables.

•&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Doing regular physical activity.

•&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Decreasing alcohol intake.

&nbsp;Lincoln County Department Of Roads will be closing the N. Sutherland River Bridge on North Prairie Trace Road over the North Platte River for a scheduled bridge replacement project. We are currently planning to close the bridge Monday October 16th,2023. 

The closure is expected to last until Summer 2025. Please use West Suburban Road, North Hershey Road and North River Road to detour the closure. The detour route can also be completed using State Highway 30, North Hershey Road and North River Road.&nbsp; &nbsp;

The Powerball jackpot starts at $20 million and continues to grow each drawing until it is won. There have been 33 consecutive Powerball drawings since July 22 without a jackpot winner. This run has grown the estimated jackpot for the Saturday, October 7 drawing to $1.4 billion or $614 million with the cash option selected. Powerball Jackpot 3rd Largest Ever; Please Play Responsibly

North Platte, NE – Guests didn’t let the chilly weather and wind&nbsp; scare them away from FNBO for their 28th Annual Chili Cook-off on Friday, October&nbsp; 6, 2023.&nbsp;

Over 240 people joined together and raised almost $4,000 to benefit Mid-Plains&nbsp; United Way and their 11 partner agencies.&nbsp;

Guests were encouraged to bring extra cash to vote for their favorite chili, themed&nbsp; booth and pie in the face winner. The winner for Best Chili went to Scot Abstract for the second year in a row. Best booth went to Lashley Land Co. Local business leaders&nbsp; participating in pie in the face were Gary Person, Nelson Jett, Cooper Grabenstein,&nbsp; Brad Hisel and Jordan Boston. Cooper Grabenstein from FNBO won and the honor to&nbsp; pie him was auctioned off to Leland Poppe of First Interstate Bank.&nbsp;

The Chili Cook-off is the giving campaign kick-off event and one of the major&nbsp; fundraisers for Mid-Plains United Way. This year, campaign funds will be distributed&nbsp; to 11 partner agencies that provide vital services and programs to the residents of&nbsp; Chase, Custer, Dundy, Frontier, Furnas, Grant, Hayes, Hitchcock, Hooker, Keith,&nbsp; Lincoln, Logan, McPherson, Perkins, Red Willow and Thomas counties. 2023-24&nbsp; partner agencies are Bridge of Hope Child Advocacy Center, Community Action&nbsp; Partnership of Mid-Nebraska-Utilities, Community Connections Mentoring,&nbsp; Community Connections Substance Abuse Prevention, Guardians of the Children, L2&nbsp; for Kids, Lutheran Family Services, Nebraska Youth Center, The Connection&nbsp; Homeless Shelter, North Platte Senior Center and Hope Esperanza.

“We are very grateful to everyone who braved the wind and came out to the Chili&nbsp; Cook-off today.  </figure>North Platte, NE – Guests didn’t let the chilly weather and wind&nbsp; scare them away from FNBO for their 28th Annual Chili Cook-off on Friday, October&nbsp; 6, 2023.&nbsp;Over 240 people joined together and raised almost $4,000 to benefit Mid-Plains&nbsp; United Way and their 11 partner agencies.&nbsp;<figure>

The winner for Best Chili went to Scot Abstract for the second year in a row. Best booth went to Lashley Land Co. Local business leaders&nbsp; participating in pie in the face were Gary Person, Nelson Jett, Cooper Grabenstein,&nbsp; Brad Hisel and Jordan Boston. Cooper Grabenstein from FNBO won and the honor to&nbsp; pie him was auctioned off to Leland Poppe of First Interstate Bank.&nbsp;The Chili Cook-off is the giving campaign kick-off event and one of the major&nbsp; fundraisers for Mid-Plains United Way. This year, campaign funds will be distributed&nbsp; to 11 partner agencies that provide vital services and programs to the residents of&nbsp; Chase, Custer, Dundy, Frontier, Furnas, Grant, Hayes, Hitchcock, Hooker, Keith,&nbsp; Lincoln, Logan, McPherson, Perkins, Red Willow and Thomas counties. 2023-24&nbsp; partner agencies are Bridge of Hope Child Advocacy Center, Community Action&nbsp; Partnership of Mid-Nebraska-Utilities, Community Connections Mentoring,&nbsp; Community Connections Substance Abuse Prevention, Guardians of the Children, L2&nbsp; for Kids, Lutheran Family Services, Nebraska Youth Center, The Connection&nbsp; Homeless Shelter, North Platte Senior Center and Hope Esperanza.<figure>

North Platte Community College will launch an online auction for surplus electronics next week. Printers, projectors and over 40 laptops and desktops, including 15 iMacs, will be available.

The auction will go live at 8 a.m. Oct. 14 and will continue through 5 p.m. Oct. 20. More equipment will be added as the auction progresses. It will be sold “as is,” and all sales will be final.

Bidders must create an account or connect to an existing Google or Facebook account to register for the auction. They will receive email updates on items they’ve bid on and a “buy it now” option will also be available.

High bidders will be able to pick up their items the day they purchase them. All electronics must be picked up by 4 p.m. Oct. 27 unless other arrangements are made.

All payments will be due at time of pick up on NPCC’s North Campus, 1101 Halligan Drive. Only cash or checks, no credit or debit cards, will be accepted. Winners must also have the winning bid email with them.

Chelsea Zuege has been selected as the 2023 Secondary Art Teacher of the Year by the Nebraska Art Teachers Association.

The Secondary Art Teacher of the Year recognition is bestowed upon members of the NATA and National Art Education Association who spend at least .51 full-time equivalent teaching art to high school students and who have made additional outstanding contributions in art education beyond the classroom at the school, district, community, state and or national levels.

Zuege is a high school art teacher at&nbsp;Chase County Schools in Imperial. She is also an adjunct and dual credit instructor for Mid-Plains Community College.

“I have enjoyed teaching art to kids and people of all ages in the Imperial community,”&nbsp;Zuege&nbsp;said. “I have been blessed to work with incredible administrators, colleagues and students - many of whom I call my friends and family now.”

Zuege will be honored in front of her peers during the 2023 NATA Fall Conference awards ceremony Oct. 13 in Lincoln. Carissa Hill, a former art student of Zuege’s, nominated her for the award and will present it to her.

Zuege is a native of Imperial. She graduated from Chase County High School in 1993 then went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Education degree with a Field Endorsement in Art (Grades PK-12)&nbsp;from Chadron State College and a Master of Arts degree in Art Education from the University of Nebraska at Kearney.

North Platte Water Department urges residents to check foundation before tonight's hard freeze

The North Platte Community College Theater Department will join forces with the North Platte Community Playhouse to present “Steel Magnolias” Nov. 10-12 and Nov. 17-19.

Showtimes will be 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays. All performances will be in the historic Fox Theater in downtown North Platte.

“Steel Magnolias,” is a comedy-drama about a group of Southern women who bond over life’s triumphs and tragedies. Scenes revolve around a beauty parlor, where the ladies have standing Saturday appointments – more for gossiping and solving problems than for beautification purposes.

The play premiered off-Broadway in 1987 and was subsequently adapted into a movie starring Sally Field, Julia Roberts, Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis and Daryl Hannah in 1989.

The North Platte rendition will feature a unique twist.

“Because of the amazing talent that came to auditions, I have double-cast every part – meaning there are two actors for each part,” said Ritch Galvan, NPCC theater instructor. “There will be a different cast each night of performances. Each actor will only perform in three of the six performances, giving each night a unique and different perspective.”

They will also be available at the door an hour before every performance.

Adult tickets are $18 in advance or $20 at the door for general admission. Tickets for high school students with IDs and for children younger than 16 are $10 in advance or $12 at the door. MPCC students, faculty and staff will be admitted free with ID.

Post news director Canon Rath chatted with NPCC softball coach Janelle Higgins and Jada Florom about the Haunted Corn Maze that begins this weekend and runs through October.

NORTH PLATTE - The NPCC Softball team is excited to host the Haunted Corn Maze for the second straight year. Last year brought many screams as participants went through the maze. This is the 14th year of doing a fundraiser in October but 2nd year of the Haunted Maze.

The maze runs from 8:00pm -11:00pm on October 7th, 14th, 20th, 21st, 27th, 28th and of course on Halloween. The event cost $10 to get in the event. All proceeds go back to the softball program. If you would like to learn more about the event, check out the podcast above.

October 5, 2023 (Lexington, Neb.) – Dawson Public Power District’s board reviewed preliminary budget information at their October meeting on Wednesday. It includes line construction projects, technology upgrades, transformer purchases, increased material costs and a 20 percent increase in insurance costs for the District’s vehicles and facilities.

In 2024, Dawson PPD anticipates a large construction project made necessary by&nbsp;a&nbsp;State of Nebraska road work on Highway 83, south of North Platte. There are plans to upgrade a transmission line in Lincoln County as well. This project will increase efficiency, capacity and reliability.

During the financial discussion, the board discussed the pros and cons of bonding for construction projects in 2024. They also talked about how much cash they want to keep on-hand for continued financial stability. The final budget will be provided to the board at the November meeting.

Updates to the line extension policy were approved. Dawson PPD will begin charging for upgrades to existing electric services, effective January 1, 2024. This will affect customers who are increasing the size of an irrigation motor or adding a grain bin to an existing site. The upgrade process will credit customers for existing equipment, offsetting the cost of new equipment. This policy change addresses the increasing cost of material.  <li>General Manager Gwen Kautz said Dawson PPD is pursuing an agreement to purchase kilowatt hours and demand capacity from Jeffrey Hydro, south of Brady. Negotiations with The Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District will continue, and an update will be provided at the November board meeting. Two proposals will be reviewed. Dawson PPD would prefer a flexible contract that benefits both districts.&nbsp;</li><li>The board renewed participation in the Nebraska Rural Electric Association group for worker’s compensation and employers’ liability insurance. The group encourages safety meetings, a safety committee of employees, accident review, supervisor trainings and an apprenticeship program.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</li><li>Kautz provided an update on the Public-Private Partnerships and Broadband Planning subcommittee of the Rural Broadband Taskforce. Kautz was appointed to the taskforce by Governor Ricketts and is interested in improving broadband access in rural areas, while protecting public power ratepayers’ financial interests.&nbsp;</li><li>Director Craig Wietjes reported on a recent Midwest Electric Consumers meeting, pertaining to federally owned hydropower. Droughts are causing uncertainty for&nbsp;<a>generation</a>&nbsp;in the west. Western Area Power Administration, which sells power from federal hydropower plants, will be evaluating pricing soon.&nbsp;<a>WAPA</a>&nbsp;power is part of Dawson PPD’s power mix during irrigation season and helps keep customer rates low.</li><li>Director Mary Wroblewski and Wietjes recapped a recent class about ensuring that rural electric utilities are resilient to industry and financial changes occurring now and anticipated for the future.</li>

Nolting grew up on a farm/ranch in Kansas, is a well-respected and popular author on the high plains, as well as cowboy poet. Nolting currently resides in the Nebraska Panhandle.
