Canon Rath talked with members of the North Platte High School Student Council about the upcoming 2 Man Golf Scramble at the Rivers Edge Golf Course on July 7th.

NORTH PLATTE, NEB - The North Platte Student Council is hosting a 2 Man Golf Scramble July 7th at the Rivers Edge Golf Course with the proceeds going to the Royal Family Kids Camp. "This year, our proceeds are going to the Royal Family Kids Camp and this Royal Family Kids Camp is a program that serves elementary school aged foster children in the North Platte and surrounding area," said NPHS Student Council President Gracie Persinger.

The event cost $40 which includes a meal and golf. The meal includes a cheeseburger, chips, and a drink. The meal will be served from 4 p.m. - 5 p.m. with the golf scramble to begin at 5 p.m. central time. You can register for the event by calling the Rivers Edge Golf Course 308-532-7550, or by going to the Rivers Edge Golf Course club house.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE, NEB – The Support Our Schools Nebraska petition signing took place Thursday with many residents coming out to Cody Park Shelter in North Platte to learn more about the petition signing and others signing the petition. The petition signing was sponsored by the North Platte Educations Assocation. The event took place from 4 p.m. - 6 p.m. central time. &nbsp;

Support Our Schools Nebraska&nbsp;is a coalition to get LB753 repealed. According to District 24 State Senator Jana Hughes, LB735, also known as the Opportunity Scholarship Act, provides a non-refundable tax credit for donations to Scholarship Organizations who administer scholarship to lower income students to attend the private school of their choice. &nbsp;

Support Our Schools Nebraska has to have a referendum petition drive to get signatures to put it on the ballot for ballot for November 2024 for the repeal of LB753. “LB753 is tax credit program for folks who owe income tax, but they get to donate 50% of whatever they owe&nbsp;to a scholarship granting organization which would go to private school tuition,” said Nebraska State Education Association President Jenni Benson. &nbsp;

The organization wants to get the petition signed so it can be placed on the ballot and that should be up to the Nebraska voters.  “What we are asking Nebraska voters to do is to sign the petition so we can just get it on the ballot,” said Benson. “Were taking this to the voters of Nebraska because we believe that public dollars should only be used for public schools.” Support Our Schools Nebraska feels that private schools should not be funded by public funding or receive a tax credit of 50%. “Considering if anybody else would donate to a school foundation, you get a 7% deduction not a 50% tax credit,” said Benson. “They get $25 million this year and they get to take 10% off the top for administrated fees, if you wanted to donate to a scholarship organization or to your particular private school, then donate, get the 7% deduction like everyone else.”&nbsp;

Petition signings for Support Our Schools Nebraska are happening all across the state. The signings started two weeks ago for the organization and alone had 25 this past week. They have over 25,000 NSEA members who received a petition in the mail this past week to try to have family and friends to sign it in the effort to get the repeal of&nbsp;LB753 on the ballot. In the past two weeks, the petition has been receiving signatures throughout the state of Nebraska. “We have well over 10,000 signatures which has been amazing,” said Benson. “All of those signatures have been by volunteers who are going out into their communities.” The organization is looking to gain 90,000 signatures while certifying 55 counties. The signatures and certifying the counties have to be done in 90 days of the bill being signed which is about the end of August.&nbsp;

In the state of Nebraska, 48 out of 93 counties do not have a private/parochial school. Lincoln County has to have 2,351 certified signatures for it to count for the certification process. Keith County needs to accumulate 557 certified signatures for the county to be certified.  To sign the petition, you must registered to vote in the county you want to sign in. “You have to be registered and we have petitions for every county, each county has to be done separately,” said Benson.&nbsp;

In this role, Hutchison leads the division responsible for creating a unified physician group that works cohesively to ensure quality health care is available and accessible throughout the hospital’s service area.&nbsp;

“Misti brings to the role a deep institutional knowledge and a focus on clinical&nbsp; excellence,” said Ivan Mitchell, Great Plains Health chief executive officer. “She is an&nbsp; asset to our team, and we know she will do an exceptional job working with our&nbsp; providers on clinic and service line operations.”&nbsp;

Hutchison brings 17 years of experience to the role. She began her career at GPHealth in 2006 in labor and delivery. Since then, she has held multiple roles, including house&nbsp; supervisor, director of emergency services and, most recently, senior director of&nbsp; nursing.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“This is a wonderful opportunity to help facilitate the growth and innovation of our&nbsp; service lines at Great Plains Health,” said Hutchison. “I am passionate about healthcare&nbsp; in rural Nebraska, and excited to help continue to drive our mission of inspiring health&nbsp; and healing by putting the patient first – always.”&nbsp;

Hutchison earned her Master of Science in nursing degree with a focus in executive&nbsp; leadership from Chamberlain College of Nursing. It's Concert Night at Nebraskaland Days; Fudge says come to Wild West Arena early

OGALLALA NEB- A Colorado Teenager passed away Saturday after a collision with another Jet Ski at Lake McConaughy. According to Keith County Attorney Randy Fair, Landon Gressman of Highlands Ranch, Colorado was operating a Jet Ski near Arthur Bay at approximately 12:45 p.m. when another Jet Ski collied with him. Landon was pronounced dead at the scene. The other Jet Ski operator was taken to the hospital and released.&nbsp;

Fair said the case continues to be under investigation and wanted to think law enforcement, emergency personnel and helpful volunteers who responded to&nbsp;the incident. Fair also reminds everyone to pay attention to boats, jet skis and other watercraft around you at all times. There are designated “no wake” areas as well as swimmers in the water.&nbsp;

The award was given to Adams for his dedication to the Ogallala Rotary and also being a dedicated member for 37 years. This is pretty much the highest award we can give throughout our district, and it is a lifetime of achievement board,” said Deb McCaslin. “This is not an award given for one year of service, or five years of service or 20 years, you put into Rotary for 37 years.” The event was held in the Adams Bank Lobby in Ogallala.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

Canon Rath talked with North Platte Plainsmen Interns Sage Crane and Frankie Enna about their journey so far in North Platte and upcoming events the Plainsmen are hosting. &nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE, NEB - The North Platte Plainsmen season is underway. Coaches, players, and interns come from all round the United States to spend their summer in North Platte. While folks go to the games to watch the players in action, behind the scenes, interns are finding ways to create a great atmosphere at the Plainsmen's games. This season, the Plainsmen have 9 interns on their roster.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Sage Crane, who is the stadium operations intern, is a Junior at Missouri Southern State University majoring in business management. She chose to come to North Platte this summer as the stadium operations internship to help her gain experience for her career path. "I wanted to look for an internship in the sports aspect of things because I really like the hospitality side of things as well," said Stadium Operations Intern Sage Crane. "So, stadium operations I feel like was a good fit for me so I can gain more experience and knowledge within my field of studies."&nbsp;

Frankie Enna, who is the social media intern, is also from Missouri Southern State University where she is a senior majoring in public relations and a minor in graphic designs. She is currently the student photography and helps assist social media pages for Missouri Southern. "I help assist with social media while my main job is photography over there (Missouri Southern), so that's what made me come over here and broaden my experience in social media," said Social Media Intern Frankie Enna.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The North Platte Plainsmen always have fun events going on for everyone to enjoy. They have a youth camp coming up June 27th - June 29th. Lincoln County Races postponed to Saturday afternoon due to rain this morning

Gothenburg Improvement Company invites the public to join the celebration as they announce a $750 million business&nbsp; investment in their community on Wednesday, June 28. This electrolyzer based liquid fertilizer facility is the largest single private investment west of Lincoln in recent memory. The project will have a significant impact in the Corn Belt region.&nbsp;

A free lunch will be provided from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. The ceremony will begin at 2:00 p.m. with remarks from Governor Jim&nbsp; Pillen and other dignitaries. The celebration will take place in the Wearparts building in Gothenburg’s industrial park, east&nbsp; of Landmark Implement. Road signs will help direct traffic to the location.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The business was successfully recruited through several local partnerships. The Gothenburg Improvement Company and&nbsp; the City of Gothenburg spearheaded the project. A carbon-free energy resource will be provided by The Central Nebraska&nbsp; Public Power and Irrigation District and Dawson Public Power District, who are currently in the process of merging to&nbsp; become Platte River Public Power and Irrigation District. Nebraska Public Power District, the wholesale power supplier for&nbsp; Dawson Public Power District and the City of Gothenburg, is working with Dawson PPD and the city to provide the power&nbsp; supply and electrical service needs of the business. Central Platte Natural Resources District coordinated the usage of&nbsp; groundwater for the plant.&nbsp;

Ogallala, NE (June 20, 2023) – Hastings Exposition and Racing, Inc., submitted their 2024 racing license application to the Nebraska Racing and Gaming Commission today with plans to move their racing license to Ogallala, NE. The plan is to establish and grow a multi-track Quarter Horse racing circuit in western Nebraska.&nbsp; Hastings will partner with Elite Casino Resorts to invest $100 million in a racetrack development and full-service casino resort on a proposed 174-acre site in Ogallala, Nebraska.&nbsp;

Brian Becker is well known in the racing industry in Nebraska and his team will run the racetrack and manage all aspects of racing. “We’ve been in the racing business for over 30 years, and the Elite family has been in the casino industry for over 30 years,” Becker said. “It was a perfect partnership to help grow the Quarter Horse racing industry by moving our racing license to western Nebraska and establish a racing circuit between Ogallala/Keith County and Gering/Scotts Bluff County where we plan the second Quarter Horse racing facility, so we can fully establish and grow Quarter Horse racing in western Nebraska similar to what the five (5) existing thoroughbred tracks have provided in central and eastern Nebraska.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

“There are over 79,000 Quarter Horses, with over 13,500 owners in Nebraska, most in western Nebraska.&nbsp; We look forward to highlighting the valuable role these Nebraska bred horses have played in our history and growing Quarter Horse racing in our state as well as attracting new owners and Quarter Horses from other states,” stated Brian Becker.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE, NEB - The 2023 NebraskaLand Day's Competitive Art Show winners has been announced. This year, Artist and Doane Professor Eric Stearns juried the exhibition. Nebraska voters asked to sign the petition to keep public funds for public schools&nbsp;

North Platte, NE – Nebraska voters in the North Platte area are invited to stop by Cody Park Shelter, 1601 N. &nbsp;Jeffers St., on Thursday, June 22 from 4-6 p.m. to sign the petition to give Nebraskans the opportunity to vote&nbsp; on whether the state should give public funds to private schools.&nbsp;

Thursday’s petition signing opportunity is sponsored by the North Platte Education Association (NPEA).&nbsp;&nbsp;

Support Our Schools Nebraska, a coalition of Nebraska not-for-profit organizations, is collecting signatures&nbsp; statewide on the referendum petition to repeal LB 753, a controversial and widely unpopular school&nbsp; privatization bill that is expected to divert more than $600 million to private schools by 2034.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Every local public school will suffer if LB753 remains law. As a North Platte educator and community member, I encourage Nebraskans to sign this petition and give voters the opportunity to repeal LB 53,” said Liz Odle,&nbsp; NPEA. “I urge voters to visit https://supportourschoolsnebraska.org/ for more information about the effort and I encourage them to stop by Cody Park Shelter on Thursday to sign the petition and support our local public&nbsp; schools.”&nbsp;

The concerns about LB 753 remaining law are many. Beyond its fiscal impact, opponents are wary of the policy’s&nbsp; lack of transparency and accountability requirements, particularly because private schools are allowed to&nbsp; discriminate in ways public schools are not.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“LB 753 does not help all children. In fact, it even subsidizes discriminatory practices. Unlike public schools,&nbsp; whose doors are open to all, private schools can discriminate against kids. Taxpayers’ hard-earned dollars&nbsp; should not be used to support private schools that are not required to serve all children,” said Benson.&nbsp;

Some of the highlights from the council meeting included the second reading of ordinance 4129, which is a two-mile extension zone near State Farm RD and South Buffalo, what's going on during NebraskaLand Day’s, the jobs and housing situation in North Platte, and the relationship between supply and demand. &nbsp;

The reading of ordinance 4129, which is the two-mile extension zone around State Farm RD and South Buffalo RD was having its second reading since the June 5th city council meeting. The two-mile zone is roughly a two-mile circle around North Platte. “If you live in that area and build something new, you have to comply with the city's building standards” said North Platte Mayor Brandon Kelliher. “The reason we are doing this, is that there is a housing development being proposed on the edge of the two-mile zone and the two-mile zone would have cut right into the middle of it.”&nbsp;

North Platte Habitat for Humanity’s 2nd annual Murder Mystery (and Mayhem) Dinner will be held July 14 at 6pm at Venue304. Tickets are available on Eventbrite, contacting the organization via calling the office or visiting the website.&nbsp;

The theme of the fundraiser is a 1920s style murder mystery play that encourages audience participation by helping to solve the crime. Frank Fontano, played by John Hales, is a notorious crime boss who is hosting a birthday party at the Cat's Meow Speakeasy, in honor of his son, Felix Fontano, played by Sam Fornander. Additional cast members include: Dalene Skates, Hannah Hokanson, Mark Cullinan, Jet Brown, Brett and Nikki Schmidt, Ben Hill, and Desiree Fornander.&nbsp;

Guests can come dressed in 1920s style gangster/flapper garb, or can visit the event ‘treasure chest’ to grab a hat, boa or headpiece to accessorize.&nbsp;

The event includes dinner and a cash bar. The person who solves the crime wins dinner for four at North 40 Chophouse!&nbsp;

Live ticket sales will also be held at Double Dips, Pop Corner and Bling. Ticket deadline is July 5th by midnight.&nbsp;

The Third annual Eagle Golf Classic which is presented by Eagle Communications, Janssen GMC, Janssen Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram, and Tami Timmerman with Lashley Land and Residential was held on April 29th, at Lake Maloney Golf Course. &nbsp;

The 18-hole golf tournament featured 24 teams this year. The donation&nbsp;money came from part of registration fees, mulligan tickets, and alcohol sales from a hole on the course. Each year, Eagle and its correspondent sponsors take turns picking a different non-profit organization to be represented at the event. This year, Make-A-Wish Greater Nebraska was chosen. In the first year of the golf classic, the donation money was split between Trails Network and the Lincoln County Ag Society and last year it was Grady’s Avengers. &nbsp;

Eagle Communications Donates $3,000 to Make-A-Wish Greater Nebraska

Investigators of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office have completed their investigation into deceased male found on June 18, 2023.  The male was identified as fifty-six-year-old Bervardino Rodriguez Gonzalez of Altimra, Tamulipas Mexico.  The cause of death has been ruled accidental.

NORTH PLATTE, NEB - On June 18, 2023, at 02:25 p.m., the Lincoln County 911 Center received a report of a deceased individual on a locomotive in Bailey Yards, just west of North Platte, NE.   Deputies located a badly decomposing male body in a small compartment used to house a fire extinguisher, on the rear of the engine. 

 Investigators saw no signs of foul play while examining the scene and body.  It appears the subject wedged himself in the room and shut the door.  Evidence at the scene showed the subject was unable to unlatch the door and died days ago in the compartment.  The deceased had numerous identifications on him that showed he was a citizen of Mexico. 

 The train engine arrived at Bailey Yards earlier the same day from San Antonio, TX.  It was previously in Mexico for several days, before arriving in San Antonio.   The investigation is ongoing, and it appears the death is accidental in nature.  The name is being withheld pending notification of relatives.
