NORTH PLATTE - The 28th Annual Chili Cook-Off hosted by First National Bank of Omaha fundraiser event is set for October 6th from 11:30am - 1:30pm in the downtown parking lot of FNBO in North Platte. The event is the official kick off for the 2023-2024 Mid-Plains United Way campaign season.&nbsp;&nbsp;

FNBO is hosting the event while all the proceeds made from this event will go to Mid-Plain United Way. "This is the 28th annual and it's presented by First National Bank of Omaha and Mid-Plains United Way is super grateful for them (FNBO) to be hosting this for us," said Executive Director Haven Smith. "They provide the event and all the proceeds come back to Mid-Plains United Way." The money raised will be used to help support non-profit organizations in the region.&nbsp;

15 teams have signed up for this year's cook-off and it only cost $10 to get into the event. You can try all the chilis and see which team may have the best. The event is October 6th at the downtown FNBO parking lot from 11:30am - 1:30pm. The weather is looking more on the chilly side for Friday. Soup Fur Paws fundraiser set for October 28th

North Platte Community College will be the site of an Applied Technologies Job Fair Nov. 2.

The event is free and open to the public. It is scheduled for 10 a.m. to noon in Rooms 105, 107 and 109 of the W.W. Wood Building on the NPCC North Campus, 1101 Halligan Drive, in North Platte.

The fair will provide job seekers with an opportunity to network with representatives from area businesses and learn about open positions in a variety of applied technology-related fields.

An emphasis will be put on electrical, building construction, welding, HVAC, automotive, auto body, diesel and CDL.

Guests are encouraged to take résumés with them. At their discretion, employers may choose to interview candidates on site.

The two-day event is expected to draw 95-115 golfers from across the state to the Lake Maloney Golf Course. Along with the participants, we are expecting many friends and family to travel alongside their girls to support them. Tee times will begin from holes one and ten at 9:00am on Monday, October 9th, weather permitting.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Visit North Platte, in partnership with Lake Maloney Golf Course, was awarded a four-year commitment with NSAA to host Class C Girls State Golf. This event is predicted to generate approximately $41,250 in visitor spending in the North Platte area.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Each year there will be a need for numerous volunteers to help make the event run smoothly alongside the NSAA officials, Visit North Platte, and Lake Maloney Golf Course. Volunteer recruitment has a significant impact on the day-to-day operations of the tournament.&nbsp;&nbsp;

North Platte High's Kymberley Egan-Woods the Teacher of The Month

Flag Retirement Ceremony on Oct. 23rd in Hershey

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The federal government has joined more than a dozen former workers in suing Union Pacific over the way it used a vision test to disqualify workers the railroad believed were color blind and might have trouble reading signals telling them to stop a train.

The lawsuit announced Monday by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission on behalf of 21 former workers is the first the government filed in what could eventually be hundreds — if not thousands — of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/health-omaha-410c8e04b049af6b1f8afe11084a43d9">lawsuits</a>&nbsp;over the way Union Pacific disqualified people with a variety of health issues.

These cases were once going to be part of a class-action lawsuit that the railroad estimated might include as many as 7,700 people who had to undergo what is called a “fitness-for-duty” review between 2014 and 2018.

Lawyers for the plaintiffs estimate nearly 2,000 of those people faced restrictions that kept them off the job for at least two years if not indefinitely. But the railroad hasn't significantly changed its policies since making that estimate in an earlier legal filing, meaning the number has likely grown in the past five years. More than three dozen lawsuits have been filed so far with many more cases still being reviewed by the EEOC.

Union Pacific has vigorously defended itself in court and refused to enter into settlement talks with the EEOC. The railroad has said it believes it was necessary to disqualify workers to ensure safety because it believed they had trouble seeing colors or developed health conditions such as seizures, heart problems or diabetes that could lead to them becoming incapacitated. They also noted federal rules require color vision testing.

“It is critical for the safety of our employees and communities where we operate that conductors and locomotive engineers correctly see and interpret the various signals that direct train movement,” railroad spokeswoman Kristen South said.

Often the railroad made its decisions after reviewing medical records and disqualified many even if their own doctors recommended they be allowed to return to work.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/palestinian-territories-ohio-canada-business-accidents-d57651e17b2f9e0163c50298106950a3">Railroad safety</a>&nbsp;has been a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/railroad-safety-derailments-tank-car-ohio-minnesota-c60f33b64e9c7dc05768a78ae20f3ce5">key concern</a>&nbsp;nationwide this year ever since a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/politics-pete-buttigieg-evacuations-ohio-explosions-64908a6416662b5866809387f210aee5">Norfolk Southern train derailed</a>&nbsp;in eastern Ohio near the Pennsylvania line in February and spilled hazardous chemicals that caught fire, prompting&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ohio-train-derailment-updates-bf5a60de2243cd6f7f730096aa33294c">evacuations</a>&nbsp;in East Palestine. That wreck inspired a number of proposed reforms from&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/east-palestine-train-derailment-safety-regulations-railroad-4db52c68daf68da05425b5b70363fb0a">Congress</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/rail-accidents-transportation-pete-buttigieg-ohio-pennsylvania-f1cd9d79cdd66b1f45d1dcdf1e53ff58">regulators</a>&nbsp;that have yet to be approved.

“Everyone wants railroads to be safe,” said Gregory Gochanour, regional attorney for the EEOC’s Chicago District. “However, firing qualified, experienced employees for failing an invalid test of color vision does nothing to promote safety, and violates the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act).”

This lawsuit focuses on a vision test that Union Pacific developed called the “light cannon” test that involves asking workers to identify the color of a light on a device placed a quarter of a mile (.4 kilometers) away from the test taker. The EEOC said in its lawsuit that the test doesn't replicate real world conditions or show whether workers can accurately identify railroad signals.

Some of the workers who sued had failed Union Pacific's “light cannon” test but passed another vision test that has the approval of the Federal Railroad Administration. The other workers who sued had failed both tests but presented medical evidence to the railroad that they didn't have a color vision problem that would keep them from identifying signals.

The workers involved in the lawsuit were doing their jobs successfully for Union Pacific for between two and 30 years without any safety problems. The workers represented in the EEOC lawsuit worked for the company in Minnesota, Illinois, Arizona, Idaho, California, Kansas, Nebraska, Oregon, Washington, and Texas.

Attorney Anthony Petru, who represents a number of the former UP workers, said the “light cannon” test is so unreliable that the railroad's own experts have testified that it would disqualify a quarter of the workers with perfect vision.

“The last thing we would do is take any steps to try to put anybody in charge of a freight train who is unsafe because of their physical characteristics,” Petru said. “What we don’t want is employees who are safe, who could do the job safely, who could do the job competently to be precluded from working because the railroad perceives them as having a disability when they don’t.”

Petru said Union Pacific disqualified all these workers over these vision tests “without making the railroad safer in any way, shape or form” because there's no history of UP workers causing derailments or collisions when they couldn't discern between red and green.

The Omaha, Nebraska-based railroad is one of the nation's largest with tracks in 23 Western states.

(AP) — The federal government has joined more than a dozen former workers in suing Union Pacific over the way it used a vision test to disqualify workers the railroad believed were color blind and might have trouble reading signals telling them to stop a train.The lawsuit announced Monday by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission on behalf of 21 former workers is the first the government filed in what could eventually be hundreds — if not thousands — of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/health-omaha-410c8e04b049af6b1f8afe11084a43d9">lawsuits</a>&nbsp;over the way Union Pacific disqualified people with a variety of health issues.These cases were once going to be part of a class-action lawsuit that the railroad estimated might include as many as 7,700 people who had to undergo what is called a “fitness-for-duty” review between 2014 and 2018.Lawyers for the plaintiffs estimate nearly 2,000 of those people faced restrictions that kept them off the job for at least two years if not indefinitely. But the railroad hasn't significantly changed its policies since making that estimate in an earlier legal filing, meaning the number has likely grown in the past five years. More than three dozen lawsuits have been filed so far with many more cases still being reviewed by the EEOC.Union Pacific has vigorously defended itself in court and refused to enter into settlement talks with the EEOC. Government sues Union Pacific over using flawed test to disqualify color blind railroad workers

Phi Theta Kappa members at North Platte Community College are collecting donations for wreaths as part of the Wreaths Across America event.

The ceremony is conducted every year to remember and honor the country’s fallen heroes. The wreaths PTK members are soliciting sponsorships for will be placed on headstones at Fort McPherson National Cemetery south of Maxwell.

PTK collecting wreath sponsorships to honor war vets

NORTH PLATTE - The North Platte city council held their regular meeting on October 3rd and their were different discussion points on the agenda that was discussed amongst the council. A few discussion points including awarding the transportation staff for their help in the Sutherland Care Facility fire and Renee White for rookie of the year, water wells at the airport, action on ordinance 4137 (skill games), resolution for TIF at the new Murphy Tractor Site, and ordinance for sale of city industrial park lots.&nbsp;

A new water well is being built on property at the North Platte-Lee Bird Regional Airport to help improve water pressure and reliability on the east end of North Plate. "The water well will hook into the cities water system along Newberry Access on the east end of town," said North Platte Mayor Brandon Kelliher. "The water well will provide a little bit better water feed to the east end of town." With the new addition of the water well being built along Newberry Access, this will help serves the new industrial developments along Newberry Access.&nbsp;

As part of the budgetary vision of the departing President Ted Carter, the Board of Regents (BOR) is requiring that UNK cut over $5 million from its biennium budget. To meet the demands of the Board of Regents, UNK’s administration is proposing to cut 30 faculty positions from 14 different departments and eliminate the departments of Geography, Philosophy, and Theater while removing the following degrees at UNK:

• Business Administration Comprehensive-Business Intelligence Emphasis BS

• Geography 7-12 Teaching Subject Endorsement

• Modern Languages BA with French emphasis or German emphasis

• Montessori Early Childhood Education Minor

• Music Comprehensive in business emphasis BM

• Music Performance Comprehensive in instrumental emphasis BM

In addition, staff members from a range of divisions on our campus are also looking at major losses in personnel.&nbsp;

All of this will have a negative impact on the education of our students and on their ability to consider a wide range of professional careers.

As of today, UNK is the&nbsp;only&nbsp;campus in the NU system where its administration has called for faculty and staff terminations.&nbsp;

The administration’s proposal has been submitted to a Faculty Advisory Committee that will offer feedback on this proposal, but their role is solely an advisory one.

Why has the NU Board of Regents demanded budget cuts from UNK that will have such a damaging effect on our institution?

The Board of Regents has chosen to apply budgetary pressures on the NU system that are leading to these extreme reductions instead of evaluating how it has historically utilized NU resources or assessing the administrative leaders in charge of recruitment and enrollment on the different campuses that are all facing stagnant enrollment numbers for another year.&nbsp;

For example, during the almost four years that Ted Carter has been president at NU he has received approximately $400,000 more a year than his predecessor. In fact, in 2022, the Board of Regents&nbsp;extended Carter’s contract&nbsp;through 2027, giving him a 3% pay raise, bringing his annual salary to $964,000 a year. &nbsp;At UNK, the cabinet has enjoyed raises for multiple years that far outpace the raises that staff and faculty have received.&nbsp;

How many professors and lecturers at UNK have to be fired in order to find the money for the next NU president’s salary or for the six- and seven-figure salaries of the various Chancellors, Provosts, Associate Provosts, Senior Vice Chancellors, Associate Vice Chancellors, or Assistant Vice Chancellors etc., on our various campuses?&nbsp;

In the spirit of equity and fairness, UNKEA requests that the Board of Regents reconsider the demands that it is making which will result in scores of UNK employees being laid off and the elimination of several departments and multiple undergraduate majors. This not only represents great harm to these dedicated employees and our students but also will have a negative impact on the larger community of Central and Western Nebraska.

UNKEA is calling on members of the greater UNK community to contact President Carter, members of the Board of Regents, and State Senators asking them to oppose the cuts at UNK.&nbsp; The Board of Regents needs to reflect on how it has been using our resources and develop a new plan that does not require applying such pain on the human beings that are central to the mission of UNK while simultaneously undermining the education of the students we serve.

Lincoln, NE – October 3, 2023 – Due to high sales, officials in the states participating in the Mega Millions® Lotto game have increased the estimated jackpot amount for the Tuesday, October 3 drawing to $315 million or $140.3 million with the cash option selected.

A second case of West Nile Virus in a horse has been reported to Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) from the nine-county health district. Several additional cases of West Nile Virus in humans have been identified as well - 10 confirmed cases with symptoms and 2 asymptomatic cases identified in blood donors, bringing the total for this year to 15.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Some of these individuals became infected while traveling in Colorado, which is also seeing a severe West Nile Virus season along with Nebraska,” stated Sarah Minnick, Program Manager at SWNPHD. “Thankfully the weather is cooling down; however, until there is a hard freeze, mosquitoes are still present in southwest Nebraska and may potentially be carrying West Nile Virus.”&nbsp;

SWNPHD encourages all horse owners to vaccinate their horses against West Nile Virus. West Nile Virus (WNV) is transmitted to horses though the bite of an infected mosquito. Horses cannot transmit WNV to other horses, birds, or people.&nbsp;

Per the Nebraska Department of Agriculture, the signs and symptoms of West Nile Virus in horses include loss of appetite, depression, fever, quivering muscles, and weakness of limbs. Infected horses may or may not show symptoms.&nbsp;

While there is no specific treatment for horses infected with WNV, the following tips can be used to help prevent infections:&nbsp;

Hunters pay no processing costs for deer accepted by processors for this donation-driven program. The HHH program is funded solely by tax-deductible contributions. Once processed, the ground venison is distributed by charitable organizations to Nebraskans in need. Since the program’s inception, more than 900,000 meals have been provided. Processors accept only whole deer in good condition to ensure a good yield of pure ground venison. Hunters should first talk with processors but may keep antlers, head and cape and donate the rest of the deer. In total, 12 businesses were checked. One business sold alcohol to a minor for a non-compliance rate of 8%. All businesses checked the minor’s ID.
