GRANT, NEB.- The Perkins County Chamber of Commerce is excited to announce that Hocus Pocus will be this month's featured film for the Drive in Movie Night. A classic Halloween movie to go along with the month of October. The movie is scheduled for October 28th.

Disney released the film in 1993 and over the years has been called one of the greatest Halloween movies of all time. The screening will take place at the Perkins County Fairgrounds on October 28th, 7:00pm mountain. Free popcorn will be offered to snack on during the movie along with donated water. The event is free will donation.&nbsp;

Perkins County Chamber selects Hocus Pocus for this month's Drive in Movie Night

This holiday-centered version of our popular summer Passport will again showcase some of the best shopping, dining and holiday-ing in our state. "With the success and excitement of last year’s first-ever Nebraska Holiday Passport, we can’t wait to continue with this year’s version," said John Ricks, Nebraska Tourism executive director. "We are looking forward to another great year for our stops and our holiday travelers."

The 2023 Holiday Passport will feature 20 attractions across the state, each with a holiday emphasis. Travelers will have from November 17, 2023, through January 7, 2024 to visit the attractions and get their stamps. "We are excited for another year of the Holiday Passport and were thrilled to have 80 applicants for stops this year," said Madison Johnson, Passport program coordinator. Union Pacific Railroad’s women-empowering&nbsp;<a href="https://www.up.com/up/aboutup/corporate_info/diversity/employee-resource-groups/index.htm">Employee Resource Group</a>&nbsp;– LEAD – is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a full-day conference, featuring appearances from some of the nation’s top women executives.

Tamika L. Tremaglio, Executive Director of the National Basketball Players Association, will be the keynote speaker and Missy Pearlman, General Manager of Toyota North America, will talk about the importance of being bold in the workplace.

The conference will be held Oct. 3 in Bellevue, Nebraska, and is open only to LEAD members.

Union Pacific’s LEAD was founded in 2003 to empower and foster opportunities for women. It stands for: Lead. Educate. Achieve. Develop. One of its founding members is Union Pacific President Beth Whited, the first woman to hold that position in the company’s 161-year history. She served as LEAD’s second president.

Please have all of the aforementioned off the streets by October 1st so we don't have to fine anyone.&nbsp;&nbsp;

City of Grant reminds residents of annual trailer parking restrictions

GRANT, NEB. - Road work is to begin today on Highway 61 at the intersection of 5th Street and Central Ave in Grant.&nbsp;

The North traveling lane will be removed and replaced today and the south traveling lane will be removed and replaced Wednesday.  With the edges being removed and replaced early next week. 

During the road work, traffic will be maintained through a single lane through the intersection. The city of Grant wants to remind residents and travelers to pay attention to the barricades and signs that are posted by the state.

Road work to begin on HWY 61 at the intersection of 5th Street and Central Ave in Grant

On 9-23-23, around 7pm, a Deputy with the Garden County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call from a male stating that Cowboy Tobacco was drunk and had tried to snap the caller’s neck.

When the Deputy arrived on scene and entered the residence, he observed Tobacco laying on his stomach with a hammer in his right hand. The Deputy instructed Tobacco to let go of the hammer and Tobacco complied. Once Tobacco was seated on a couch, he started becoming emotional, asking the Deputy what was going on and what he did.

When the Deputy told Tobacco about the call received, Tobacco became angry, yelling and threatening the Reporting Party. Tobacco was removed from the residence in order to try to calm him down and get his side of the story, but Tobacco began getting even more aggressive and continued yelling, stepping toward the residence and breaking a window with his fist. 

Tobacco was then placed into custody and taken to the Emergency Room to treat the cuts on his hand sustained while breaking the window. While in the ER, Tobacco was very aggressive toward medical staff and would not follow Deputies’ commands. Tobacco intentionally made a fist and would wave his hand in a flicking motion toward the Deputy, flinging blood on him. 

Tobacco had to be physically held down for medical attention and received stitches. He was eventually transported to the Cheyenne County Jail. Tobacco has been charged with Terroristic Threats, Assault Peace Officer with Bodily Fluids, Criminal Mischief, Assault 3rd Degree and Disturbing the Peace.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Ogallala Rotary Club to host Horror Nights in October

<a>The men on the Mid-Plains Community College Rodeo Team are back on top following a weekend of competition in Dickinson, N.D.&nbsp;</a>

MPCC’s cowboys and cowgirls competed Friday and Saturday at the Blue Hawk Stampede hosted by Dickinson State University.&nbsp;The Mid-Plains’ men’s team finished first in overall standings, and the women’s team was fifth.

Koby Jacobson, of Haiku, Hawaii, continued his winning streak by claiming the top spot in the bull riding average. Jett Sjeklocha, of North Platte, and Casey Reis, of Grand Island, placed third and seventh, respectively, in the event.

Kahiwa Augustiro, of Hoʻolehua, Hawaii, took the Reserve All-Around title after placing fifth in the bull riding average, sixth in the steer wrestling and eighth in the team roping alongside teammate Eli Higa, of Honokaʻa, Hawaii.

Jackson Lunn, of Whitecourt, Alberta, earned the second-place spot on the leaderboard for bareback riding.

Rex Day, of Bartlett, was second in the average for steer wrestling, and Jacobson ended up seventh.

In the team roping, Jaxton Starr, of North Platte, and Colton Zubach, representing Dickinson State University, came in second in the average. Tucker Even, of Burke, S. D., and Slater Tople, from Black Hills State University, claimed fourth. Whitney Jennings, of Seneca, and Garrett Glines, of Smithwick, S.D., were fifth, and Layton Lindner, of Broken Bow, and Ty Growcock, of Ericson, were ninth.&nbsp;

Madison McGee, of Deloraine, Manitoba, Canada, was fourth in the breakaway average, and Jace Richter, of Ogallala, took eighth in the tie-down roping.

“I was extremely proud of the kids this weekend,” said Aukai Kaai, MPCC Rodeo Team roughstock coach.&nbsp;“They took care of business inside the arena and bounced back after a tough rodeo last weekend. I am really proud of our bull riders - four of the seven made the short round. I thought we scored well and battled all weekend long. I still believe our best is yet to come, and I think a couple tweaks in the practice pen will make it all come together.”

The MPCC Rodeo Team has one more rodeo before taking a break until spring. The fall competitions will wrap up with the Buena Vista University Rodeo Friday and Saturday in Alta, Iowa.

I am really proud of our bull riders - four of the seven made the short round. I thought we scored well and battled all weekend long. I still believe our best is yet to come, and I think a couple tweaks in the practice pen will make it all come together.”The MPCC Rodeo Team has one more rodeo before taking a break until spring. Acting United States Attorney Susan Lehr announced that Jennifer M. Payne, 45, of North Platte, Nebraska, was sentence in federal court in Lincoln, Nebraska, for a violation of the Lacey Act. Senior United States District Judge John M. Gerrard sentenced Payne to 2 years’ probation for unlawful transportation of wildlife in interstate commerce. Payne was ordered to pay a fine in the amount of $5,000, restitution in the amount of $5,000, and to complete 100 hours of community service. As part of her probation terms, Payne shall not hunt, fish, trap, provide guiding or outfitting services, or assist or be present with anyone engaged in those activities during the term of probation.

A joint investigation conducted by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, Office of Law Enforcement and the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, Law Enforcement Division determined that in September of 2019, Payne conducted a guided mule deer hunt during the archery season. During the hunt, Payne&nbsp;unlawfully shot a mule deer in Lincoln County, Nebraska, and&nbsp;subsequently caused parts of the unlawfully taken trophy deer to be shipped to a commercial tannery located in Michigan.

Payne admitted that in the fall of 2019, she participated in a mule deer hunt with Noble Outdoors, a commercial big game guiding business located in North Platte, Nebraska. During the hunt, Payne, while guided by Noble Outdoors owner, and accompanied by another Noble Outdoors client,&nbsp;unlawfully shot a mule deer&nbsp;buck with 5 X 5 antlers in velvet during closed season hours between 10 PM and 12 AM on September 7, 2019, from a seated position within the passenger compartment of a vehicle parked upon a public roadway. The vehicle was being operated by the Noble Outdoors owner. In addition, Payne shot the mule deer with a 6.5 mm Creedmoor rifle outfitted with a suppressor and a thermal scope. Afterwards, Payne and the Noble Outdoors owner posed for night-time photographs with the mule deer and a crossbow in attempt to conceal the fact Payne unlawfully killed the deer with a firearm during the archery season. Under Nebraska state law, hunters are prohibited from possessing firearms or using firearms to hunt deer during the archery season, are prohibited from shooting from or over a roadway, and are authorized to hunt only during the legal shooting hours from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset.

North Platte women sentenced in federal court for violation of the Lacey Act

Sutherland, Nebraska – The Village of Sutherland has awarded its first economic development grant under the new Property Improvement Program. In May of 2022, the very fiscally conservative voters of Sutherland recognized the need to collectively invest in the growth and sustainability of their community. They voted to place a tax upon themselves of 1 ½ percent. That process included the creation of the Sutherland Economic Development Program and the Citizens Advisory Review Committee to oversee the distribution of the half-percent tax that was earmarked for economic development.

The Village Board of Trustees approved three programs developed by the volunteers on the committee and the Program Administrator, Muriel Clark. The programs are the Business Development Loan and Grant, the Property Improvement Program Loan and Grant and the Digital Marketing Grant.

On September 21, the Citizens Advisory Review Committee reviewed a grant application for the Property Improvement Program from Devin and Sandi Ruff for exterior improvements to downtown Sutherland’s Sno White. The Ruffs purchased the business earlier this year and have been spending many hours cleaning up the property and improving its appearance. Development plans include creating a year-round restaurant and preserving the historic telephone exchange building that is also on the property. The CARC voted to recommend to the Village Board of Trustees funding for the exterior improvements with a grant of $10,000.

The Sno White is a Sutherland landmark, having served up ice cream and meals in the community since the 1950’s. The CARC recognized the importance of the business to the community and the fact that prepared food sales are taxable and will help to replenish the balance of the economic development fund. The committee also forwarded a favorable recommendation of a Property Improvement Program grant application from a homeowner to replace a deteriorating sidewalk but recommended that the Village adopt standardized guidelines for sidewalks throughout the community prior to funding the project.

The Village Board of Trustees agreed with the recommendation and approved funding for the Sno White at its regular monthly meeting on September 27. They also tabled approving the grant for sidewalk repair until the Planning Commission and the Board of Trustees can clarify specifications for sidewalks.

The grants awarded under the program are for reimbursement and no monies will be paid out until the project is completed to the satisfaction of the Village in accordance with the application. No part of the project contained in the application can be begun prior to the applicants signing an agreement and receiving a notification to proceed. The Ruffs plan to have the Sno White open in the spring of 2024 with the improvements completed.

The Economic Development Department will be holding an informational Open House and Town Hall Meeting on Tuesday October 24 from 7pm to 8pm in the Village offices for anyone interested in learning more about the programs.

LINCOLN — Nebraska families receiving benefits from the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program should not be affected by the pending federal government shutdown, at least not for now, the state Department of Health and Human Services said Friday.&nbsp;

In Nebraska,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://dhhs.ne.gov/Pages/WIC.aspx">WIC</a>&nbsp;each month provides healthy food, breastfeeding support, nutrition information and referrals to about 37,000 people of low income.&nbsp;

The state’s DHHS and local agencies are working to keep more than 100 WIC clinics across Nebraska open and to ensure that food assistance is not interrupted. New applicants continue to be accepted, HHS said in a statement.

“e-WIC cards will continue to be accepted at WIC-authorized grocery stores and pharmacies,”said Peggy Trouba, DHHS program manager. “At this time, WIC clinics will be open for business as usual, and WIC recipients can be assured their food benefits will continue to be available.”

Steve Corsi, DHHS’ new chief executive, said the agency is monitoring congressional activity. “Should circumstances change or the shutdown be prolonged, DHHS will reevaluate and communicate any changes.”&nbsp;

The Hot Sheets: September 30th, 2023

Alpha Beta Theta, North Platte Community College’s chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, is the recipient of a Certificate of Excellence from Keep Nebraska Beautiful.

PTK advisor Dr. Glynn Wolar and former PTK president Abel Silva accepted the certificate Thursday night at the Younes Conference Center South in Kearney.

The award was bestowed in honor of the chapter’s “Trashathon,” a community litter cleanup that PTK conducts twice per year.

Representatives from Keep North Platte and Lincoln County Beautiful nominated PTK for the award in the Great American Cleanup category, and the chapter won third place.

North County Road closed in Sutherland beginning today

MPCC and the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture are co-hosting the shooting tournament, which will continue through Sunday.

Thirteen schools from seven states are competing&nbsp;in the disciplines of trap, double trap, skeet, double skeet and sporting clays. Each shooter gets 400 targets.

 MPCC Shooting Club cohosts Prairie Circuit Conference

GRANT, NEB. - It's an early Friday afternoon kick off for today's Sandhills Post Area Game of the Week featuring Sandhills Valley (0-5) traveling to Grant to take on Perkins County (4-1) with kickoff scheduled for 2:30 mountain/3:30 central.

Perkin's County is led by first year Head Coach Brendan Geier and under his staff, the Plainsmen boost a 4-1 record heading into their week 6 matchup. The Plainsmen got things rolling after they were defeated in Week 2 by Dundy County Stratton 34-20. Since then, the Plainsmen have been on a roll getting wins over Bayard (47-8), Kimball (55-0), and getting victory over Sutherland last week 46-16. In Perkins County last three games, they have outscored opponents 148-24.

The Plainsmen are a run heavy style of offense this season. Through 5 games, Perkins County has rushed for 1,464 yards and are averaging 293 rushing yards a contest. Through those 5 games, 5 Plainsmen have rushed for over a hundred yards. Leading the rushing attack is Oscar Boldt with 496 rushing yards and 9 Touchdowns. Ryder Potts has rushed for 353 yards and has found the endzone 4 times. Jackson Wykert has accumulated for 208 rushing yards, quarterback Dawson Tjaden has run for 178 yards and Nolan Foster has helped ran the ball for 144 yards.

Sandhills Valley is led by head coach Luke Connell. Despite being 0-5 on the season, this team is better than what their record shows. The Mavericks have lost 3 games by one possession. Sandhills Valley, who were district runners-up a season ago, lost a good senior class. Despite having juniors in the line-up, this is many of those players first year as a starter and have shown growth from week 1 to week 6.

The Mavericks lean more on the run in the offensive scheme but also can throw the ball when needed. So far through 5 games, Sandhills Valley has rushed for 976 yards and have thrown for 571 yards. leading the rushing attack is Cayson Johnston who has ran for 486 yards while punching in 2 touchdowns. BJ Goforth is second on the team in rushing yards as he has 337 yards and a team high 4 rushing touchdowns. In the air, Layton Connell has been moving the ball well. Connell has passed for 571 yards and has 10 passing touchdowns. Top target this season for Connell has been Kyle Kramer as he has 22 catches for 300 yards and 5 receiving touchdowns.

The Prairie Art Center will be hosting an event this Saturday beginning at 1 pm in the PAC Library. The event is the "Making History Live Again" with Andrew Miller hosting the presentation and reception.&nbsp;A compilation of generations of service with memorabilia, art, history and artifacts a prewar tribute to battleships.&nbsp;

I grew up in a family of service. My father and mother both enlisted in the US military. On December 8th, 1941, my father chose the Navy and served in the South Pacific as a supply specialist on Guadalcanal and later in the Philippines. Dad stayed in the Navy following WWII, and served in the Naval Reserves, attaining the rank of Lieutenant Commander. While in the reserves, my father also served in the Korean War, and the Vietnam conflict.

My mother was a US Marine, and during WWII was one of the very first women in the Marine Corps, rising to the rank of Sergeant. My brother was the next family member to join the Navy and qualified as a Radioman 2 ndClass aboard the USS Chicago during the VietNam Conflict. I enlisted in the Navy on April 29th 1975 into the Navy’s electronics program; a grueling, intensive schooling in mathematics, electronics theory, both digital and analog, as well has hardware training on communications transmission and reception. 

I joined the Pacific Fleet in San Diego in June of 1976 at Pier 1 of the 32 nd Street Naval Station. The USS Point Loma was scheduled to be commissioned on July 4th 1976 as part of the Nation’s bicentennial celebration. As such, I am a plank owner of the USS Point Loma, AGDS-2 While aboard the Point Loma, the ship traveled to the Caribbean, the North Atlantic, and the Western Pacific supporting various dive missions for the bathyscaphe Trieste II in the Navy’s deep submergence program, and hosted the National Geographic Institute, and Dr. Robert Ballard as part of its deep submergence career.

After the USS Point Loma, I was transferred to the live ordnance bombing ranges at Naval Air Station (NAS) Fallon NV, where I served as lead technician and range maintenance supervisor for a team of technicians tasked with keeping the remote electronics functioning and accurate. In 1989 I matriculated to the Office of NOAA Corp Operations (ONCO) where I spent the next decade as a Radio Officer (Grade equivalent O-3) on survey and marine science ships of the NOAA Fleet, primarily NOAAS Surveyor (S-132), and NOAAS Rainier (S-221). 

My range of operations spanned the Arctic Ocean, Prince William Sound, the Pacific Northwest, the Hawaiian Islands, and Antarctica. With the advent of 2 small children, my sailing career came to an end as I transferred from the National Ocean Service to the National Weather Service. My duty stations included Seattle WA, Pendleton OR, Chanhassen MN, and North Platte NE. 

By the time I arrived at the National weather Service (NWS) I no longer included sonar and bathymetric scientific equipment in my repertoire, but added computers, and Doppler radar. In 2019 I retired after some 35 years of public service as a GS-2201-10 step 9 (Grade equivalent O-5)Building things with my hands goes back to when I was 5 or 6 when I would use the cardboard from my dad’s dry cleaned shirts to make a variety of airplanes and ships. I haven’t let up ever since. In 1990 I won best in show at Seattle’s American Eagles competition for my model ship of the 1660’s; “La Couronne”. Another model ship, Sweden's “Vasa” was donated to Seattle’s Center for Wooden Boats.&nbsp;&nbsp;

HERSHEY, NEB . - This week, our first of two Sandhills Post Area Game of the Weeks will take a 13-mile trip west for Thursday Night Lights between the (1-4) Hershey Panthers battling it out with the (3-2) Chase County Longhorns with kickoff set for 7:00pm central time.&nbsp;

Hershey is heading into this Thursday night battle on after falling to Mitchell last week 42-7. Hershey's lone win came on September 8th when they defeated Centura 29-6. The Panthers is slightly leaning more on the pass attack than the rush attack. So far this season senior quarterback Cooper Hill has thrown for 604 yards with his top target as Kaden Thompson who has 25 catches for 301 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Chase County is heading into this week after defeating Gordon Rushville 27-6. Last week, the Longhorns finished the game with 227 rushing yards while junior Thomas Reeves led the team with 147 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns. Junior Tuck Hubbard led the team defensively with 15 tackles with 2 for a loss.
