LINCOLN, Neb - As the University of Nebraska celebrates the 100th&nbsp;anniversary of Memorial Stadium, the Board of Regents is set to consider renovation plans that will modernize the state’s most iconic facility for its next century and beyond.

Plans for the $450 million renovation will go before the Board at its Oct. 5 meeting. The meeting begins at 9 a.m. at the Wigton Heritage Center, 42nd&nbsp;and Emile streets on the University of Nebraska Medical Center campus in Omaha. The meeting is open to the public and will also be live-streamed at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.nebraska.edu/" target="_blank">www.nebraska.edu</a>.

Informed by a 2022 survey that drew responses from 22,000-plus Husker fans about what improvements they wanted to see in the stadium, the modernization project has three overarching goals, according to Athletic Director Trev Alberts:

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Enhance the evolving fan experience that encourages families to come to Memorial Stadium on game day.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Ensure a modern facility with infrastructure suited for the next century.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Provide equitable and affordable access for all Husker fans, including dedicated space for students.

“One hundred years ago, Nebraskans came together to celebrate the first game at Memorial Stadium – the start of what would become a century’s worth of memories for students, alumni, fans and families all across our state,” Alberts said. “Now our fans have an opportunity to come together again to ensure that we can make memories for another century. After 100 years, the reality is our stadium needs significant modernization.

“A project of this scale can’t happen without some degree of disruption, but we ask our fans to give us grace as we work through our ambitious plans. We could not be more excited to bring this proposal to the Board of Regents and share our vision with Nebraskans for making Memorial Stadium the home of one of the best fan experiences in college athletics.”

“The University of Nebraska is proud to be investing in excellence in all areas – academic and athletic. Facilities are a crucial part of that strategy,” said University of Nebraska President Ted Carter. “Just as we are making unprecedented investments in our classroom and laboratory space, outstanding athletics facilities help to build Nebraskans’ excitement about their university and add to the power of our national brand.

“This project is an exciting part of our vision for Nebraska to compete at the highest levels across the board.”

If approved by the Board, the project will be paid equally from private funds ($225 million) and other funding sources, including up to $50 million from the university’s internal lending program. No student tuition dollars or university general operating dollars will be used. Unlike most athletic departments, Nebraska’s does not receive a subsidy from the university.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;South Stadium demolition and replacement with chair-back general seating.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;New chair-back seating in West and East stadiums.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;360-degree main-level concourse connection and 270-degree upper-level concourse connection.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Concession upgrades, refurbished menu options and added points of sale throughout the stadium.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Restroom modernization throughout the stadium.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Academic curriculum space, with specific uses guided by UNL’s academic leadership.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Enhanced student life amenities.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;ADA upgrades throughout the stadium.

Pending Board approval of a waiver of Regents Policy 6.3.6, $45 million in infrastructure work will begin soon, prior to the Board’s review of intermediate design documents. The policy waiver is being sought so as much work as possible can be completed during the off-season.

Completion of the entire stadium renovation project is targeted for July 2026, with occupancy to follow in August.

Additional highlights of the Oct. 5 Board of Regents meeting

The meeting will lead off with an update on NU’s “Five-Point Plan” from President Carter. The host chancellor, Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D., will also provide a UNMC update.

Board of Regents to meet Oct. 5; regents will consider Memorial Stadium renovation plans

North Platte, NE – Construction has begun on a new restaurant in North Platte. The well-known Midwest restaurant chain, Pizza Ranch, provides a faith and family-focused restaurant with a full buffet, carryout, and delivery, as well as a FunZone Arcade featuring interactive games for all ages. Post's Derek Beck chatted with Autumn Schleicher from the Nebraska Department of Labor about how the last month of September is National Employee Older Workers Week and the Nebraska Department of Labor has programs for older workers to join their team.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE - The last week of September is dedicated as National Employee Older Workers Week and the week encourages employers to hire older workers to join their team. The Nebraska Department of Labor is always offering programs for workers 55 and older who want to get back into the work field. The Nebraska Department of Labor offers what's called the Senior Community Service Employment Program. The program is targeted at workers who are 55 and older, are unemployed and maybe looking to start a new career path. The program runs year-round but is limited spots.&nbsp;

The event will take place from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm at the main FNBO parking lot&nbsp; (201 N Dewey St) in North Platte. Admission is $10, which includes samples of 20 different chilis prepared by local businesses and organizations. Beverages and&nbsp; desserts will be sold by Mid-Plains United Way and their partner agencies. Guests are&nbsp; encouraged to bring extra cash to vote for their favorite chili, themed booth and pie in&nbsp; the face winner. Local business leaders participating in pie in the face are Gary&nbsp; Person, Nelson Jett, Cooper Grabenstein, Brad Hisel and Jordan Boston. The honor to&nbsp; pie the winner will be auctioned off to the highest bidder!&nbsp;

The Chili Cook-off is the giving campaign kick-off event and one of the major&nbsp; fundraisers for Mid-Plains United Way. First National Bank of Omaha Hosts 28th Annual Chili Cook-off to Benefit Mid Plains United Way 

The Mid-Plains Community College Rodeo Team’s annual fall timed event fundraiser will be Oct. 27-28.

Activities will begin with a breakaway roping jackpot at 6 p.m. Oct. 27 at the Kiplinger Arena in McCook. A team roping jackpot is planned for Oct. 28 at the same location.

The breakaway roping will consist of two long go rounds and a top 10 short round. Each roper will be allowed to enter twice. Only cash will be accepted for entry fees, and the payout will also be cash. Pre-registration is required.

The second day will begin at 10 a.m. with a #12 team roping, the cost of which is $100 per team for four head,&nbsp;progressive on one. It will be a handicap roping with an up and down slide – 1.5 seconds per number with a #10 cutoff.

Immediately following will be the #9 handicap team roping – down slide only. The $80 fee covers four head, progressive on one. There will be a 1.5 second slide per number down with a #5 cutoff. Contestants must be entered by the short round of the number 12 roping. &nbsp;

All events are open to the public and free to watch.

Trials for the winter peas included 16 varieties and were planted in the fall of 2022. The winter pea trials at Perkins County were excellent, considering the dry fall and being planted into dry soil. The peas went into winter without significant stands. Volunteering wheat from the preceding crop hindered a good stand in the spring. Rainy weather meant the volunteer wheat could not be sprayed on time. Not much winter kill was observed. The trails in Cheyenne County failed with dry soils and poor stands in the spring.

The spring pea variety trials planted in the fall of 2023 included 12 varieties. Overall, this year’s spring pea variety testing result was excellent compared to the last two to three years’ extremely poor yield due to drought and high temperature. This year’s weather was ideal, with lots of rain and mild temperatures throughout the growing season. Results were recorded for both Cheyenne and Perkins County, but Box Butte peas failed because of hail.&nbsp;

The trials included winter and spring peas from ProGene and Meridian Seeds, with winter peas from Seed Ranch and spring peas from Valesco Genetics.

Perkins County winter and spring pea seed protein data will be posted at a later date.&nbsp;

North Platte Community College will showcase the talents of the top high school musicians in the area Oct. 23.

NPCC’s music department will host the Best of the West Music Festival on its south campus, giving high school students selected through an audition process the opportunity to perform at the collegiate level.

“We implemented auditions this year to make it truly, ‘Best of the West,’ and to provide students with exposure to the auditioning process - something they will find more often as they progress through the music world,” said&nbsp;Kristin Simpson, NPCC music instructor.

Thirty-one high school musicians from nine schools were selected for inclusion in the festival. They are:

The high school students will spend all day rehearsing ahead of an open to the public performance when they will join members of the college’s concert choir and jazz band on stage for the NPCC Fall Concert.&nbsp;Simpson will lead the choir, and&nbsp;Jennifer Winder will direct the band.

The concert is free to attend. It will&nbsp;begin at 6 p.m. in the McDonald-Belton Theater on the NPCC South Campus, 601 W. State Farm Rd., in North Platte.

On September 25th, 2023, at 8:09 pm, officers were on patrol near the area of Newberry Rd and E Philip Ave when they observed a vehicle traveling northbound on Newberry at a speed of 56 mph in a 40-mph zone. 

Officers activated their emergency lights and conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle, making contact with the driver, 34-year-old Michael Olson. During the stop, officers detected the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle and asked Olson to step out. 

A search of the vehicle was conducted, and officers located 21 vacuum sealed bags of marijuana weighing 23.88 lbs, 8.99 lbs of wax, 2.79 lbs of Psylocibin mushrooms, multiple scheduled pills, and nonscheduled, prescription only pills inside of the vehicle. Officers also located over $310 split into smaller denominations and held together with a rubber band. 

With probable cause established, Olson was taken into custody without issue. Olson was incarcerated at the Lincoln County Detention Center for the Charges of Distribution of a Controlled Substance-Marijuana, Distribution of a Controlled Substance-Psilocybin Mushroom, Possession of a Controlled Substance 1,2,3, Possession of a Controlled Substance 4,5, Possession of Money While in Violation of a Drug Offense, Possession of a Legend Drug.

Parker McCollum and Jelly Roll will headline the 2024 Viaero Summer Jam Concert Series. The concerts will wrap up the 60th edition of NEBRASKAland DAYS on June 21st and 22nd, 2024.&nbsp; “We’re always trying to bring the best of country music to North Platte every year,” says Executive Director David Fudge. “We managed to get that done again for this year and we’re pretty excited about it.”&nbsp;

McCollum was also nominated for new artist of the year by the&nbsp;&nbsp;CMA. His career dates back a decade, and started in the Texas&nbsp;&nbsp;Red Dirt scene. He released two albums under the PYM Music&nbsp;&nbsp;label before MCA Nashville signed him and released his 2021 album Gold Chain Cowboy. Vontz Paving, Inc. of Hastings is the contractor for this project. Work includes milling, asphalt surfacing,&nbsp; earth shoulder construction, and seeding. Traffic will be maintained with lane closures, a pilot car, and&nbsp; flaggers. A 12-foot width restriction will be in effect. Anticipated completion is Nov. 2023.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The purpose of this project is to preserve the transportation asset, improve the reliability of the&nbsp; transportation system and perpetuate the mobility of the traveling public.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up, and to put phones&nbsp; down.&nbsp;

GRANT NEB. - The Perkin's County Chamber of Commerce hosted there second drive in movie this past Saturday. The movie featured in this months showing was the 2021 Disney release Jungle Cruise starred Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson. The event was held at the west side of the Perkin's County Fairgrounds.

This past showing was a free will donation and offered free popcorn. The Perkin's County Chamber of Commerce goal is to show one movie a month with weather permitting. The first movie they showed was back in August when it showed Top Gun: Maverick. Next's month showing and time has yet to be released.

Perkin's County Chamber of Commerce hosted second drive in movie showing over the weekend

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration announced Monday that it has awarded more than $1.4 billion to projects that improve railway safety and boost capacity, with much of the money coming from the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/joe-biden-congress-infrastructure-bill-signing-b5b8cca843133de060778f049861b144">2021 infrastructure law</a>.

“These projects will make American rail safer, more reliable, and more resilient, delivering tangible benefits to dozens of communities where railroads are located, and strengthening supply chains for the entire country," Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in a statement.

The money is funding 70 projects in 35 states and Washington, D.C. Railroad safety has become a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/railroad-safety-derailments-tank-car-ohio-minnesota-c60f33b64e9c7dc05768a78ae20f3ce5">key concern</a>&nbsp;nationwide ever since a train carrying hazardous chemicals&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/norfolk-southern-derailment-east-palestine-ohio-ntsb-bc2531012afcac4ee54e6b3999e31ed9">derailed and caught fire</a>&nbsp;in East Palestine, Ohio, in February.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/east-palestine-train-derailment-norfolk-southern-biden-875699405d37cacbb5dd958dafb18071">President Joe Biden has ordered federal agencies</a>&nbsp;to hold the train's operator Norfolk Southern accountable for the crash, but a package of proposed rail safety reforms&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/east-palestine-train-derailment-safety-regulations-railroad-4db52c68daf68da05425b5b70363fb0a">has stalled in the Senate</a>&nbsp;where the bill is still awaiting a vote. The White House is also saying that a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/shutdown-mccarthy-congress-house-republicans-biden-249d83636e9d61cdd2aabdf34a129514">possible government shutdown because of House Republicans</a>&nbsp;would undermine railway safety.

The projects include track upgrades and bridge repairs, in addition to improving the connectivity among railways and making routes less vulnerable to extreme weather.

In Nebraska, more than $15.2 million will modernize the Cornhusker Railroad, improving track, grade crossings, and a railcar repair facility through the Cornhusker Railroad Regional Connectivity Project. Investments will result in safer and more efficient operations, including improved interchanging of regional trains with Class I railroads.

Among the projects is $178.4 million to restore passenger service in parts of Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi along the Gulf of Mexico for the first time since Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005.

“This is a significant milestone, representing years of dedicated efforts to reconnect our communities after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina,” Sen. The grant should make it possible to restore passenger service to the Gulf Coast after Amtrak reached an agreement with CSX and Norfolk Southern railroads last year to clear the way for passenger trains to resume operating on the tracks the freight railroads own.

“We’ve been fighting to return passenger trains to the Gulf Coast since it was knocked offline by Hurricane Katrina. That 17-year journey has been filled with obstacles and frustration — but also moments of joy, where local champions and national advocates were able to come together around the vision of a more connected Gulf Coast region,” Rail Passengers Association President &amp; CEO Jim Mathews said.

In one of the biggest other grants, the Palouse River &amp; Coulee City Railroad in Washington state will get $72.8 million to upgrade the track and related infrastructure to allow that rail line to handle modern 286,000-pound railcars.

A project in Kentucky will receive $29.5 million to make improvements to 280 miles of track and other infrastructure along the Paducah and Louisville Railway.

And in Tennessee, $23.7 million will go to helping upgrade about 42 bridges on 10 different short-line railroads.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration announced Monday that it has awarded more than $1.4 billion to projects that improve railway safety and boost capacity, with much of the money coming from the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/joe-biden-congress-infrastructure-bill-signing-b5b8cca843133de060778f049861b144">2021 infrastructure law</a>.“These projects will make American rail safer, more reliable, and more resilient, delivering tangible benefits to dozens of communities where railroads are located, and strengthening supply chains for the entire country," Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in a statement.The money is funding 70 projects in 35 states and Washington, D.C. Railroad safety has become a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/railroad-safety-derailments-tank-car-ohio-minnesota-c60f33b64e9c7dc05768a78ae20f3ce5">key concern</a>&nbsp;nationwide ever since a train carrying hazardous chemicals&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/norfolk-southern-derailment-east-palestine-ohio-ntsb-bc2531012afcac4ee54e6b3999e31ed9">derailed and caught fire</a>&nbsp;in East Palestine, Ohio, in February.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/east-palestine-train-derailment-norfolk-southern-biden-875699405d37cacbb5dd958dafb18071">President Joe Biden has ordered federal agencies</a>&nbsp;to hold the train's operator Norfolk Southern accountable for the crash, but a package of proposed rail safety reforms&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/east-palestine-train-derailment-safety-regulations-railroad-4db52c68daf68da05425b5b70363fb0a">has stalled in the Senate</a>&nbsp;where the bill is still awaiting a vote. The White House is also saying that a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/shutdown-mccarthy-congress-house-republicans-biden-249d83636e9d61cdd2aabdf34a129514">possible government shutdown because of House Republicans</a>&nbsp;would undermine railway safety.The projects include track upgrades and bridge repairs, in addition to improving the connectivity among railways and making routes less vulnerable to extreme weather.In Nebraska, more than $15.2 million will modernize the Cornhusker Railroad, improving track, grade crossings, and a railcar repair facility through the Cornhusker Railroad Regional Connectivity Project. Investments will result in safer and more efficient operations, including improved interchanging of regional trains with Class I railroads.Among the projects is $178.4 million to restore passenger service in parts of Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi along the Gulf of Mexico for the first time since Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005.“This is a significant milestone, representing years of dedicated efforts to reconnect our communities after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina,” Sen. NORTH PLATTE - The Lincoln County Raceway is hosting their first ever Valve Cover Races on October 28th. The event geared towards a driver teaming up with 4-5 kids and competing in the races. The drivers will be the kid's mentors throughout the whole event from getting together to working on getting ready for the valve cover races and being a role model for their team.&nbsp;

Kids will receive a T-Shirt with their name and team name on it that they can wear to the day of the races. It is free for kids to participate in the event. Registration ends on October 1st. &nbsp;(North Platte, Neb.) — Weather permitting, Southbound Jeffers Street traffic will be shifted from the right lane to the left lane, and Leota Street will be closed west of Jeffers Street beginning today, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation.&nbsp;

The west leg of the Jeffers and Leota Street intersection will be closed for both eastbound and westbound traffic. Leota Street will be open between Dewey and Jeffers. Motorists are advised to utilize alternate routes during the closure. The intersection closure is expected to be in place for approximately two (2) weeks.&nbsp;

Paulsen, Inc. of Cozad is the contractor for this project. The intersection closure is for construction of new concrete pavement at the Leota Street intersection. The traffic shift is to allow for phase 2 of the project to commence.&nbsp;

Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up, and to put phones down.&nbsp;
