NORTH PLATTE, NEB – The City of North Platte has reached a new milestone: the tax’s first million-dollar month. April was the first month of North Platte’s higher 2% city sales tax that helped quickly reach this&nbsp;milestone for the city. Last November, voters approved a ballet to increase sales tax by half a cent to fund improvements to North Platte Rec Center and Cody Pool. The 2% sales tax went into effect on April 1st.&nbsp;

The Nebraska Department of Revenue will return $1,161,747 to the city for April, the department reported Wednesday in releasing that month's local sales and hotel-motel tax figures across the state. Proceeds from the extra half-cent will gradually repay yet-to-be-issued bonds to expand the North Platte Recreation Complex, renovate Cody Pool and relocate and rebuild the city's skate park.&nbsp;

Isabelle is approximately 5'06, 190 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.  Isabelle was last seen in the 2300 Block of East D St, on June 12th around 11:00 am.  Isabelle is possibly wearing a red t-shirt with black shorts.  If you have any information on Isabelle's whereabouts, please contact the North Platte Police Department.

NORTH PLATTE, NEB – The Prairie Arts Center in North Platte is a non-profit that offers many different opportunities during open studio, variety of classes, events, and&nbsp;different community events. With Nebraskaland Days going on in North Platte, the Prairie Arts Center has been hosting a competitive art show. The event goes on till June 24th.  &nbsp;

Taking classes is a great way to shape up your art skills or learn new skills. The Prairie Arts Center offers a wide variety of different classes you can take. The open studio has been a popular event that folks like to attend. Open studio is where you paint your own pottery since it's open ceramics. “Individuals from the public can come in at any time and don’t have to make a reservation for this like they do for some of our other classes,” said Holly Carlini, Executive Director. “They can come in and go to the third floor into the ceramics studio, pick out a piece of pottery, open to all ages which is really great.”&nbsp;

The Prairie Arts Center is open to the public and their hours are Tuesday-Saturday from 11 am – 4 pm and for more information about classes or events you can <a href="https://www.prairieartscenter.org/" target="_blank">click here</a>.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE, Neb - JoSee Saults was named Miss Rodeo Nebraska 2024 Lady-in-Waiting Wednesday night during the Buffalo Bill Hall of Fame Rodeo in North Platte.

JoSee Saults is the 22-year-old daughter of Scott and Jill Saults from Big Springs, NE. JoSee just recently graduated from the University of Wyoming with a degree in Communication and a minor in Sociology. She plans to attend law school. JoSee grew up on her family ranch where they raise horses and a small herd of commercial cattle. JoSee competed in both junior and high school rodeo. During college, JoSee was on the Eastern Wyoming College rodeo team, and she served as the team president. JoSee enjoys competing in Breakaway roping and training horses.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb - Miss Rodeo Nebraska 2024 will be announced this evening during the first night of the Hall of Fame Buffalo Bill Rodeo in North Platte. Due to illness, contestant Jessica Lange had to withdraw on Tuesday and wasn't able to participate in the style show and blind draw questioning part of the competition.

 JoSee Saults from Big Springs is the other Queen contestant. The 2024 Miss Teen Rodeo Nebraska will be announced at 1:30pm Wednesday at North Platte Community College. Miss Rodeo Nebraska 2024 will be announced during the rodeo this Wednesday night.

The interview is with JoSee Saults and Jessica Lange with Eagle's Tony Lama, recorded Monday morning.

WIC and Family Planning - Conversation with Jodi Sonneman

OMAHA — While Nebraska overall saw a slight population bump, 51 of the state’s counties lost residents between mid-2021 and mid-2022, according to a new census analysis by the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s Center for Public Affairs Research.

Among the fastest-growing were suburban areas around the state’s core metropolitan counties.

Sarpy and Saunders Counties both grew by about 1.4% — outperforming the 0.1% that same year of mega neighbor Douglas.

Lancaster County, another population center, clocked in with a smaller 0.4% growth, compared to bordering Otoe County’s 1.2%.

Such patterns, said CPAR director Josie Schafer, who reviewed the latest census figures and assembled maps, reflect a national trend of bedroom communities picking up people after COVID-19 struck. CPAR is the designated State Data Center for Nebraska.

Especially as remote and hybrid work schedules became more accepted, she noted, many people have opted to move farther from urban centers and population clusters.

The census report also showed some of the strongest annual population growth in a handful of smaller, more rural Nebraska counties, including Frontier, Deuel, Greeley and Dawes.

Translation: “A little bit more stability in rural counties,” said Schafer.

Indeed, the analysis showed Frontier coming on strong as the frontrunner of the state’s growing counties after an 8.6% decline between 2010 and 2020.&nbsp;

Frontier is home to the University of Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture, which has noted&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/briefs/a-25-million-gift-to-nu-will-expand-the-barn-into-a-rural-student-center-and-boost-programs-at-urban-uno/">plans to expand</a>&nbsp;from about 300 to 500 students within the decade. The campus, in the town of Curtis, also is poised to get a new $12 million student and community center.

During the decade of 2010-2020, Schafer said that 68 of Nebraska’s 93 counties saw their population decline (compared to 51 during the year between July 2021 and July 2022).

The county-level population information for July 2021 to July 2022 followed statewide estimates from the Census Bureau. The updates take into account the official 2020 decennial counts and then use additional statistical processes and projections.

Nebraska’s latest population estimate of 1,967,923 represents an increase of 0.22% —&nbsp; just above the 50-state median of 0.19%.&nbsp;

At that rate, Nebraska topped percentage gains in Iowa, Missouri and Kansas (the Hawkeye state actually saw a dip).

Nebraska’s statewide growth rate fell short of the rate in bordering states of Colorado, Wyoming and South Dakota. South Dakota was among the country’s top performers.

Eighteen states lost population over that year.

The latest population data comes also as states nationwide,<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/briefs/have-jobs-need-people-is-the-message-at-nebraska-workforce-week-event/">&nbsp;including Nebraska</a>, grapple with workforce shortages exacerbated by the pandemic and&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2023/02/13/nebraskas-shifting-workforce-demands-amid-brain-drain-should-sound-alarm-researcher-says/">demographic shifts</a>&nbsp;that include relatively fewer young people to fill jobs.

Population growth is key because it can spur a state’s economic activity via labor availability and tax paying residents that help cover costs for public services and amenities such as education and infrastructure.

Size factors into how much a state receives from federal grants, and economic development energy is often cited as a reason talent moves to an area.

According to a Pew Charitable Trusts report on national results, Florida was the fastest-growing state for the first time since the 1950s, expanding by 1.9% between mid-2021 and mid-2022.

Total U.S. population grew twice as fast during that time frame compared to the prior year, when states felt the brunt of the pandemic. Pew researchers said population growth nationally began to rebound last year as births spiked and COVID restrictions loosened, allowing more steady flow across borders.

Yet overall, Pew reported that nearly 1 in 5 states lost residents in 2022, and growth nationally was slower than the already sluggish pace over the preceding decade.

Population growth strongest in some Neb. suburban, rural counties

<a>The options for professional cowgirls have opened up, and the Buffalo Bill Rodeo provides one of those choices.</a>

With the addition of the women’s breakaway roping to the North Platte pro rodeo in 2020, cowgirls who don’t barrel race have another event they can enter.

Among the more than 400 contestants entered at the North Platte rodeo this weekend, 54 of them are breakaway ropers, and twelve of them are Nebraska cowgirls.

Katie Dent, Mullen, is one of those Nebraska women. When she graduated high school in 2002, she chose to play basketball at Hastings College, where she was on the national championship teams her freshman and senior years.

Breakaway roping has been an event in high school and college rodeo for years, but about three years ago, it began to be added to pro rodeos across the country.

And as it’s opened more doors for cowgirls to compete professionally, the amount of money to be won by cowgirl ropers has increased dramatically. Like their counterparts in the barrel racing and the men’s events, breakaway ropers can make a living going down the rodeo road.

If professional breakaway roping had been around when Dent got out of college, “it would have been a much bigger consideration,” she said. “There wasn’t any option for it, beyond college, as a professional career.”

Dent’s brother is retired bareback rider Steven Dent, a ten-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier and three-time reserve world champion. He was a standout football player and wrestler for Mullen High School.

“I remember Steven trying to make that decision,” she said. “He asked himself, ‘am I going to play football (collegiately) or rodeo?’ Finally he said, I can make a pro career in rodeo. I didn’t have that opportunity. It wasn’t even an option.”

Chadron’s Brandy Schaack will rope in North Platte. The Hyannis native teaches third grade and rodeos in the Badlands Circuit, the rodeos in North and South Dakota.

A 2013 and 2014 state high school champion breakaway roper and 2021 collegiate regional champ, this will be her third time to compete in North Platte.

She’ll compete at between forty and fifty rodeos this year, counting both pro rodeos and the regional associations.

She loves that the breakaway roping is growing. “It’s crazy, to me, how far it’s come,” she said. “It’s really cool to see it added to more places, with equal (added) money. There’s so much money out there to be won, it’s insane.”

Schaack travels with Danielle Wray, another breakaway roper, from Ord.

A 2020 graduate of Mid-Plains Community College, Wray won the state high school breakaway title in 2018 and the 2019 and 2020 collegiate regional team roping titles.

She and her dad, Mark, raise and train AQHA performance horses; her sister Makayla just finished her senior year as fourth in the state in the breakaway roping at the state high school finals rodeo, held in Burwell last weekend. &nbsp;

Adding breakaway roping to pro rodeos “has opened many doors. Five years ago, after college, you had one option: amateur rodeos. Now you have options. You can go to the circuit finals, you can try to make the National Finals Breakaway Roping. We have places to go now.”

Her sister Makayla has choices that Danielle, even five years ago, didn’t have. “My sister is a senior in high school this year. She talks about getting her (Women’s Pro Rodeo Association) permit next year, and that was something I never thought about because it wasn’t a choice.”

Dent has a daughter, Abbigail, age nine, who, just this spring, roped her first calf while on horseback. “That really fed the fire (for her),” Dent said.

Abbigail is a dozen years away from pro rodeo, but Dent is glad that breakaway roping could be a possibility for her.

“How great is it, that my daughter can make that choice. Maybe she won’t want to do that at all, but I’m really excited about the opportunities for everybody.”

The Buffalo Bill Rodeo takes place this week, June 14-17, at the Wild West Arena in North Platte. Breakaway roping is one of eight events at the rodeo, including bareback riding, steer wrestling, tie-down roping, saddle bronc riding, team roping, barrel racing, and bull riding.

Performances begin at 8 pm. Slack, the extra competition, takes place at 8 am on June 14-15. Slack is free and open to the public.

Rodeo tickets range in price from $11-$24 and are available online at NebraskalandDays.com, at the Wild West Arena office (2400 North Buffalo Bill Ave.) and at the gate.

The Hot Sheets, June 13th, 2023

Tickets for the 2023 North Platte Community College raffle car, a 1972 Pontiac Le Mans Sport, are on sale now at participating locations.

They will be sold everywhere the vehicle is displayed, at all Mid-Plains Community College campuses and at various area businesses.

The car will make its first public appearance at 9 a.m. June 16 during the Buffalo Bill Kiwanis Antique Car Show and Parade in Memorial Park in North Platte.

The Le Mans is the 18th raffle vehicle produced by the college’s Transportation Division. It was restored by students in NPCC’s Automotive Technology and Auto Body Technology programs.

Among the Pontiac’s many features are a LQ4 6.0L engine,&nbsp;4L80 transmission, four-wheel disc brakes, a Kilduff Shifter and Ford nine-inch, clutch-style Eaton Posi differential.

The car is painted in PPG Lightning Blue, boasts a custom hood and front valance and comes with air conditioning and cruise control amenities.

The Le Mans will tour the state throughout the summer, making appearances at car shows, parades and cruise night events. A schedule will be posted at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.mpcc.edu/academics/programs/classic-car-raffle.php" target="_blank">mpcc.edu/academics/programs/classic-car-raffle.php</a>.&nbsp;

A total of 10,000 raffle tickets will be offered at a cost of $10 each. Proceeds will be used for scholarships for students in the college’s transportation programs and to help offset the cost of producing the next raffle car project.

A number of businesses, organizations and individuals have offered to sell tickets. In North Platte, those include: Don’s Motor Company, Cohagen Battery Store, Levander’s Body Shop, Grandma’s Memories Antiques and Collectibles, Isabelle’s Auction House, A.J. Janas, Pat Smith, Jody’s Auto Sales and LKQ Corporation.

The Yellow Rose Lounge and Herrick Auto and Marine, in Curtis; Top Notch Auto and Towing and Moe’s Graphics, in Gothenburg; Kent Silvester, in Imperial and Neil Noel, in Beaver City will also have tickets.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Additionally, tickets will be available at the welcome centers of MPCC campuses in McCook, North Platte, Broken Bow, Imperial, Ogallala and Valentine.

Buffalo Bill Rodeo - Conversation with John Harrison

Bidding opens today on the 2023 North Platte Community College Foundation Auction House.

Students in the college’s Building Construction, Electrical and Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVAC-R) Technology programs constructed the house from the foundation up to gain hands-on, real-world experience.

It will be sold via silent auction, and proceeds will be used to fund scholarships for students in the building trades.

The public is invited to tour the home during open houses scheduled for 4-6 p.m. June 27 and 4-6 p.m. July 10. It is located on the college’s north campus, 1101 Halligan Drive, in North Platte.

Individual tours can also be scheduled through the North Campus Welcome Center by calling (308) 535-3601.

This year’s three-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bathroom home was custom-made to conform to high performance standards. It measures out at 1,886-square-feet and features an open concept design throughout the foyer, living room, dining room and kitchen.

Pella Lifestyle Series windows offer exceptional energy efficiency as does the LED lighting installed throughout the home. The R46/R38 insulation in the ceilings and R21 insulation in the 6-inch sidewalls was also installed with energy efficiency in mind.

The LP SmartSide siding, which is resistant to rot, termites and mold, comes with a 30-year finish warranty. There is also a 30-year warranty on the shingles.

The home is wired for cable and telephones. The buyer will be responsible for the electrical meter, main service disconnect, a water heater, a furnace and any heat or energy recovery ventilation systems.

LINCOLN — Free meals are available to children, ages 1 to 18, at sites in about 50 communities across Nebraska this summer.

The food, both breakfasts and lunches in some locations, are available via the Summer Food Service Program of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

A number of community camps and programs are also offering free meals to those children who are enrolled, according to the Nebraska Department of Education.

To find the nearest free meal site near you, text the words “FOOD” or “COMIDA” to the number, “304-304” and follow instructions.

In Alliance,&nbsp; the Summer Food Service Program will be served at Emerson Elementary and Alliance Middle School. The program will run Monday thru Friday until June 30.&nbsp; Youth age 19 and under are welcome to take part.&nbsp; Breakfast is served from 7:30 to 8 am and Lunch served from 11:30 am to Noon.&nbsp; Meals must be eaten on site.&nbsp;
