Bidding opens today on the 2023 North Platte Community College Foundation Auction House.

Students in the college’s Building Construction, Electrical and Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVAC-R) Technology programs constructed the house from the foundation up to gain hands-on, real-world experience.

It will be sold via silent auction, and proceeds will be used to fund scholarships for students in the building trades.

The public is invited to tour the home during open houses scheduled for 4-6 p.m. June 27 and 4-6 p.m. July 10. It is located on the college’s north campus, 1101 Halligan Drive, in North Platte.

Individual tours can also be scheduled through the North Campus Welcome Center by calling (308) 535-3601.

This year’s three-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bathroom home was custom-made to conform to high performance standards. It measures out at 1,886-square-feet and features an open concept design throughout the foyer, living room, dining room and kitchen.

Pella Lifestyle Series windows offer exceptional energy efficiency as does the LED lighting installed throughout the home. The R46/R38 insulation in the ceilings and R21 insulation in the 6-inch sidewalls was also installed with energy efficiency in mind.

The LP SmartSide siding, which is resistant to rot, termites and mold, comes with a 30-year finish warranty. There is also a 30-year warranty on the shingles.

The home is wired for cable and telephones. The buyer will be responsible for the electrical meter, main service disconnect, a water heater, a furnace and any heat or energy recovery ventilation systems.

The minimum bid is $175,000. Prospective bidders must be pre-qualified. The highest bid will be posted online throughout the duration of the auction.

LINCOLN — Free meals are available to children, ages 1 to 18, at sites in about 50 communities across Nebraska this summer.

The food, both breakfasts and lunches in some locations, are available via the Summer Food Service Program of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

A number of community camps and programs are also offering free meals to those children who are enrolled, according to the Nebraska Department of Education.

To find the nearest free meal site near you, text the words “FOOD” or “COMIDA” to the number, “304-304” and follow instructions.

In Alliance,&nbsp; the Summer Food Service Program will be served at Emerson Elementary and Alliance Middle School. The program will run Monday thru Friday until June 30.&nbsp; Youth age 19 and under are welcome to take part.&nbsp; Breakfast is served from 7:30 to 8 am and Lunch served from 11:30 am to Noon.&nbsp; Meals must be eaten on site.&nbsp;

Canon Rath talked with North Platte St. Pats Cheer Coach Lisa Trosynki and Dance Coach Julia Harrach about how Skills USA, Strutters Dance Team and the St. Pat’s Cheerleaders will be working the concession stand at NEBRASKALand Days.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE, NEB – NEBRASKAland Days is almost upon is and the two weeklong festivals always have plenty of opportunities to raise money through fundraisers. This year at all four rodeos, both concerts, and Taps and Toons, the North Platte St. Pat’s will be running those concession stands. The three groups that are involved with running the concessions stands are Skills USA, Strutters Dance Team, and the St. Pat’s Cheerleaders. 

The organizations that are involved with helping run concession stands can all be beneficial with the money they raise. A big issue that has come up is that these groups must pay for their uniforms and at times travel expenses can be costly. All three groups have similar but different uses for the funds that are raised. &nbsp;

For the dance and cheer teams, they have to purchase their uniforms. “Each program even though they are school sponsored, they still encore expenses that the school can’t cover,” said North Platte St. Pat’s Strutter Dance Coach Julia Harrach “Like uniform expenses, every cheerleader and dancer own their own uniform that they have to pay for themselves.” Uniform expenses can always be a tough challenge to pay for. These fundraiser events are important to help these three organizations raise funds for their programs.&nbsp;

In Ogallala, the Keith County Area Development is wanting to use the funds raised to create impactful projects in the community. “One of the things we want to do in Ogallala this year is to hang solar lights thought the alley way Pocket Park,” said Molly Jeffries. “This would be more of a complete type of project.” Check out the podcast to learn about all the project ideas in Ogallala, Paxton, and Brule. Keith County Big Give - Conversation with Molly Jeffries from the Keith County Area Development

LMCA-Las Mañanitas Community Advocates in coordination with Keep North Platte and Lincoln County Beautiful will be holding a Northside North Platte Cleanup on June 28th.&nbsp; The event is held as part of the Great American Cleanup which is the country’s largest community improvement program that kicks off in more than 20,000 communities each spring. This national program engages 2 million volunteers who take action in their communities to create positive change and lasting impact.&nbsp;

The event will run from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM.&nbsp; Volunteers are asked to meet at the Lutheran Family Services Park at the corner of Rodeo Road and Jeffers.&nbsp; Volunteers can stop in at any time during the event and help for as long as they would like.&nbsp; All supplies will be provided. Refreshments will be served at Dayspring Bank (formerly 1st State Bank) at the conclusion of the cleanup.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

“We want to encourage our citizens to get involved in keeping our community a cleaner, greener, more beautiful place to live,” said Mona Anderson, Executive Director of Keep North Platte and Lincoln County Beautiful.&nbsp; Adi Fernandez-Dobbins, LMCA Director added, “It is time to revitalize the Northside of North Platte. Mid-Plains United Way Radiothon - Donate to Nebraska Youth Center

Canon Rath talked with North Platte Mayor Brandon Kelliher about different discussions points during the June 5th, 2023, North Platte City Council Meeting.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE, NEB – The June 5th North Platte City Council meeting has come and gone and there were many topics on the agenda. Some of the highlight agenda would feature technology changes, interlocal agreements between the city of North Platte and Lincoln County, series of public hearings on West State Farm Road and East State Farm Road, and Merrill appointments. 

All city council meetings are streamed through YouTube and outdated technology can be an issue. “Couple things we have talked about over the last year in fact if not longer is the audio and visual equipment inside the city council chamber and it’s kind of old and needs to be replaced,” said North Platte Mayor Brandon Kelliher. “We had some issues with it, it’s probably been about two months ago now and just barely found the parts to get it to work. Mid-Plains United Way Radiothon - Donate to The Connection

Hershey Public Schools will receive $100,000 as part of the 2023-24 reVISION Action Grant through the Nebraska Department of Education.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The&nbsp;reVISION Action Grant aims to assist schools in the effort to improve and expand education through career and technical programs to better meet Nebraska workforce demands. The funds from this grant will be used to strengthen the district’s new Agriculture program by increasing the opportunity for safe, hands-on learning experiences that are typically not available prior to entering the workforce.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Hershey’s budget proposal for the grant focused on the purchase of a variety of simulators that will provide an equitable way for all students to access growth and learning in multiple agriculture related career fields.&nbsp;&nbsp;

In the area of plant sciences, a phytotronics germination chamber will allow students to experience the process of seed germination, and a grow tower will allow students to plant, grow, and harvest greens and herbs year round in an indoor setting. Additionally hydroponics and plant systems packages will bring supplemental curriculum and tools to the classroom.&nbsp;&nbsp;

In the area of food production, the purchase of a beef learning lab kit will guide students through activities related to anatomy, breeds, conformation, meat cuts, medicine labels and inserts, and animal handling. The purchase of a fish farm tank will equip students with experience in one of the fastest growing areas of animal food production, a form of aquaculture in which fish are raised to be sold as food.&nbsp;

In the area of animal and vet sciences, the purchase of a swine breeder simulator will help students learn about and practice artificial insemination and swine birthing techniques. Similarly, the purchase of a bovine birthing and ultrasound simulator will allow students to practice ultrasound techniques as well as calf pulling with a variety of calf positions and pulling straps. The purchase of an animal systems package will bring supplemental curriculum, models, and simulators to the classroom.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A vet tech lab will equip the classroom with equine, canine, and feline models to help students become familiar with the anatomy of domestic and farm animals. Additionally, animal bathing supplies will supplement teaching and provide hands-on learning related to animal bathing techniques for both daily and medical care.&nbsp;

The grant will allow all students to experience and engage in skill-based learning while prioritizing safety and equity. The use of simulators to assist students in building job related skills will also strengthen and better prepare students for the work-based learning program Hershey implemented during the 2022-23 school year. The activities funded by the grant also create partnership opportunities between FFA and FBLA students to market and sell produced goods, helping reinforce entrepreneurial and teamwork skills.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Assistance in writing this grant came from Donavan Phoenix, Jeff Steinbeck, Sarah Ostmeyer, Jane Davis, and ESU 16’s Loree Cain and Melissa Engel.&nbsp;
