NORTH PLATTE, NEB -&nbsp;From May 15th to June 4th, the North Platte Police Department participated in the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Safety Administration’s “Click it or Ticket” high-visibility enforcement effort.&nbsp; Department Wide, a total of Two Hundred Fifty-nine traffic contacts were made and a total of eighty-two citations were issued.&nbsp; Out of the 82 citations, three arrests were made for DUI-Alcohol, one for Felony DUI drugs, and two for minor in Possession of Alcohol.&nbsp; Thirty-one citations were issued for speeding, two citations were issued for careless driving, seven were issued for violation of traffic control devices, two were issued for possession of marijuana and seven were issued for Driving Under Suspension.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Five drivers were arrested on outstanding warrants.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A Pre-enforcement survey was conducted showing a 39% seatbelt compliance rate.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A Post-enforcement survey was conducted showing a 55% seatbelt compliance rate.&nbsp;

The organization adopted the caring and sharing program and the program is a don’t ask, don’t tell service that helps provide Christmas gifts for families in need. “If you were experiencing a financial hardship and don’t feel like you can provide gifts for your children that Christmas, we have set up an online form. Go fill that out, give us a couple of different gift ideas,” said Stephanie Reed. “We make sure no child goes without a gift Christmas time.” The event runs until June 15th and you can donate by going to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.keithcountybiggive.org/" target="_blank">https://www.keithcountybiggive.org</a> and click on Ogallala Rotaract. Union Pacific’s famed Big Boy No. 4014, the world’s largest steam locomotive built to haul heavy freight over steep mountain passes during World War II, will be traveling across Nebraska en route to Omaha in June for the 2023 College World Series.

The train will be making whistle-stops during its journey, with stops scheduled in Gering, Broadwater, Lemoyne, North Platte, Cozad, Kearney, Grand Island, Columbus, and Fremont. The whistle-stops will give train enthusiasts of all ages a chance to hear, smell and see the train as it passes through their community.

Big Boy will leave Cheyenne, Wyoming, on June 7, for its 590-mile journey to Omaha. It will be on display for 11 days during the College World Series in Omaha, before returning to Cheyenne, Wyoming on July 3.

Big Boy No. 4014 was delivered to Union Pacific in December of 1941. This powerful machine was built to cross the Wasatch Mountain Range east of Ogden, Utah. It was retired in 1961 after traveling a little over a million miles, reacquired by Union Pacific in 2013 and restored to service in 2019.

NORTH PLATTE, NEB - Mid-Plains Community College has become the first community college in Nebraska to have its early entry program accredited by the National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships (NACEP).

It is the second college in the state to achieve the status, which makes it easier for high school students to transfer credits in college-level courses to postsecondary institutions. MPCC’s accreditation is good through the 2027-28 academic year.

“MPCC has strived for years to provide quality dual credit opportunities to our high schools and their students,” said Jody Tomanek, vice president of Academic Affairs and North Platte Community College. “This accreditation recognizes the work that our faculty and staff have put in to ensure that high school students receive college credit with exceptional quality and that the courses we provide are rigorous and meet national standards.”

As the nation’s only accrediting body for concurrent enrollment programs, NACEP’s standards serve as the model for ensuring parity in faculty, course content, student outcomes and support.

Receiving accreditation means an institution has met the nation’s most rigorous standard in concurrent enrollment program development, management and evaluation across multiple, multifaceted program areas.

“NACEP accreditation ensures that students have a seamless transition to college by allowing them to experience college courses at their high schools,” said Kayla Thurman, director of Early Entry and Program Development at MPCC. “A national accreditation will also assist in improving transferability to colleges and universities. MPCC is excited to offer dozens of dual credit opportunities to area students.”

Altogether, there are 133 NACEP-accredited programs in 26 states. Mid-Plains was one of seven dual and concurrent enrollment programs to earn the recognition this year.

Update: North Platte Police Department looking for runaway/missing juvenile

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — According to Lincoln County District Court records, Logan Divine, 22, is facing a life sentence after pleading no contest last month to second-degree murder and the use of a weapon to commit a felony.

The charges stem from an incident that took place in August of 2021, as reported by the North Platte Police Department (NPPD).

Authorities allege that Divine beat 23-year-old Geoffrey Allen into unconsciousness using a baseball bat. Allen later died after being airlifted to a Denver hospital.

According to an arrest affidavit, Divine entered an apartment on South Cottonwood Street and struck Allen twice with a baseball bat. He then allegedly punched Allen multiple times while he sat on a chair.

The affidavit said witnesses told NPPD officers that Divine dragged Allen into a vehicle and drove him to a residence on East Phillip Avenue. Witnesses said Divine threw Allen over a fence before striking him again with a bat.

Divine then loaded Allen into his car and drove him back to the apartment on South Cottonwood Street. Upon arrival, he performed CPR on Allen before 911 was called.

Divine is scheduled to be sentenced on July 24.

<a>If you’re a steer wrestler, Nebraska is the place to be the third week of June.</a>

With the Buffalo Bill Rodeo going on in North Platte, the Melvin-Swanson-Halligan Steer Wrestling Jackpot in Sutherland, and the Garrett Nokes Memorial Steer Wrestling and Breakaway Jackpot in McCook, there’s plenty of chances to win money in the Cornhusker state.

Dru Melvin has helped organize the Melvin-Swanson-Halligan Jackpot for the past seventeen years, in part because his dad, Wayne Melvin, is one of the three for whom the memorial is named. (Melvin, Swede Swanson and Harrison Halligan, all who have passed, were good friends and competed together.)

Being a jackpot, anyone can enter, ages 18 and up, and a lot of the cowboys who will steer wrestle at North Platte come early to compete in Sutherland.

It gives steer wrestlers from across the nation more of a reason to come to Nebraska, because there are three events within 85 miles, and the chance to make seven runs: two in McCook at the Nokes Memorial, three at Melvin’s event, and two at the Buffalo Bill Rodeo.

For cowboys, competitive runs equate to chances to win money.

And if a cowboy does well at the Melvin-Swanson-Halligan, he advances to the Match of Champions, which is five more competitive runs.

“Where else can you go and run from seven to twelve steers, all within seventy miles?” Melvin said. “It’s seven chances to make money in three days, and that’s unheard of, and if you advance to the match (of champions, you could have a bonus five runs.”

The jackpot has a laidback vibe, Melvin said, in part because it’s prior to the busy summer rodeo season. “When I was rodeoing full time, it was our last fun deal before it got serious and we were gone for eight weeks.”

Cousins Rhett Witt and Tucker Ravenscroft are part of the tradition of Nebraska bulldoggers (as steer wrestlers are often called).

The young cowboys, 20 and 19 respectively, will compete at all three events.

Their mothers, Michele Mulligan-Witt and Shannon Mulligan Ravenscroft, are sisters to Nebraska steer wrestler, Sean Mulligan, a National Final Rodeo qualifier.

The young men watched their uncle Sean pro rodeo, and was around when Sean and his steer wrestling friends traveled through. “When they’d stop through, the environment was awesome,” Witt remembers. “We dreamed of being those guys, on the road all the time, getting to bulldog.”

Witt just completed his welding associates degree at Laramie County Community College in Cheyenne, Wyo.; Ravenscroft just finished his first year at the same school. Witt will return for two more years of college, working towards an equine science associates degree. Both men compete in college rodeo.

Witt, who is the 2020 Nebraska High School Rodeo Association steer wrestling champ, graduated from Valentine High School in 2021. Ravenscroft graduated from Cody-Kilgore High School in 2022.

Witt is in his second year of PRCA rodeo; Ravenscroft just started. The two travel together and help each other out.

Rodeo competition scratches the competitive itch both men have.

Ravenscroft was part of the Cody-Kilgore High School football team that won the 2021 six-man state title.

“I loved football,” he said, “but I love steer wrestling more.”

He considered playing college football and got some junior college offers, but rodeo won out.

“I told myself, if I make the National High School Finals Rodeo (in 2022), I’ll commit to bulldogging, and I did, and I love it. There’s no sitting on the bench in rodeo.”

Tucker’s older brother, Tyler, is also a steer wrestler but won’t compete in North Platte; he will be helping at the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyo.

While Witt and Ravenscroft are at the beginning of their rodeo careers, Dru Melvin is getting towards the end.

The 40-year-old from Hebron, Neb., has had a good rodeo career, having competed full time for years, qualifying for seven Prairie Circuit Finals, the Canadian Finals rodeo once, and two Wrangler National Finals Rodeo

Now, with a fulltime job and five kids with wife Brittany, he rodeos closer to home. He’ll compete at all three events next week.

“I’m one of the old guys on the list,” he joked. “I still have fun and still have a good horse, so I feel like it’s still fun.”

The Melvin-Swanson-Halligan Memorial also includes the Ote Berry Tour Stop, a competition for those 18 and under. The Memorial is free.

The Buffalo Bill Rodeo is June 14-17 at the Wild West Arena in North Platte.

Melvin, Witt and Ravenscroft will make their first run during slack, the extra competition that doesn’t fit into the evening performances. Slack is at 8 am on June 14-15.

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. —&nbsp;Three people are dead in Grand Island as the county attorney says a 26-year-old man killed his wife and another man before taking his own life.

The Grand Island Police Department responded to an incident in the 4100 block of West Arizona Avenue in Grand Island Sunday morning at 2:30 a.m.

Hall County Attorney Marty Klein told NTV 23-year-old Emily Goodell had come from Lincoln and was at the home in northwest Grand Island.

Klein says her 26-year-old husband, Rex Goodell, had come from Lincoln to Grand Island "to contact her" early Sunday morning.

According to Klein, the evidence shows Goodell killed his wife inside the home. Klein said he's not certain of the timeline of events but says the 26-year-old also shot 23-year-old Hayes Morgheim. Klein says the Morgheim was at his parents home. Klein said the parents were not injured.

Grand Island police said they did not fire any weapons but turned over the investigation to SCALES (South Central Area Law Enforcement Services) for "an impartial investigation".

Klein said Nebraska law requires a grand jury look into deaths in police custody. He said this case presents a gray area as police were in proximity but the man was not in custody or being arrested. Klein said they are proceeding with an outside investigation in the event a grand jury will need to be called.

Klein said "police arrived quickly" and said Goodell is the lone suspect. He died at the scene.

The Hot Sheets (June 3, 2023)

NORTH PLATTE, NEB. — A combined effort of several law enforcement agencies resulted in the arrest of a Lexington man following multiple pursuits in western Nebraska Friday.

The incident began at approximately 9:15 a.m., when the Nebraska State Patrol was informed that the Logan County Sheriff’s Office was in pursuit of a vehicle that had fled an attempted traffic stop north of North Platte on Highway 83. The suspect vehicle, a Chevrolet Silverado, was southbound on Highway 83 at a high rate of speed and drove in the northbound lane at times. The Logan County deputy discontinued the pursuit at the Lincoln County line.

Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputies and North Platte Police officers picked up the pursuit north of North Platte but discontinued the pursuit out of concern for public safety as the vehicle entered North Platte at a high rate of speed.

At approximately 10:00 a.m., a trooper observed the vehicle traveling eastbound on Interstate 80 and attempted a stop near mile marker 220. The vehicle accelerated and fled. The trooper initiated a pursuit. The Dawson County Sheriff’s Office also joined the pursuit. The suspect vehicle exited I-80 at mile marker 231, turned eastbound on Highway 30, and continued toward Lexington. The pursuit was discontinued as the vehicle entered Lexington.

NSP dispatchers were able to confirm the address associated with the vehicle registration. Troopers, Dawson County deputies, and Lexington Police officers responded to that address and located the vehicle in the driveway. The registered owner of the vehicle exited the residence and attempted to flee on foot. He was quickly apprehended.

The driver, Jesus Torres, 42, of Lexington, was arrested for flight to avoid arrest, willful reckless driving, resisting arrest, possession of a controlled substance, and obstructing a peace officer. He was lodged in Dawson County Jail. Additional charges are possible in relation to the incidents in Logan and Lincoln counties.
