The North Platte Young Professionals are proud to announce the 2023 Finalist in the Big Idea North Platte business pitch contest.&nbsp;There was a 31% increase of submissions this year which shows the entrepreneurial spirit is alive and growing in North Platte.

There are nine finalists for the Community Category: Brandon Thomas, Joshua Howell, Jessica Braithwait, Nathan Goebel, Brandon McCook, Jordan Maassen, Tayler Eller, Rodger Farr, and Mindee Mohr.

There are seven finalists for the Youth Category: Aashi Naidoo, Rose Green, Ava Welch, Logan Robirds, Landon Shepherd, Dany Zheng, and Mason Giebler.

Big Idea North Platte business pitch contest is taking place on Wednesday, October 18th at Venue 304, located at 304 East 5th Street, North Platte.

The Social for Big Idea North Platte begins at 5:00pm. The main event starts at 6:00pm when the top 9 finalists in the community category, the top seven in the youth category give a two-minute idea pitch and then go through a short question and answer session. From there, they will be narrowed down to the top five finalists. The judges will select the top 5 in the&nbsp;community category and top three for the youth category. Once the top finalists are announced, audience members will decide who takes home the first, second, and third place prizes. Contestants are encouraged to bring their friends, colleagues, and fans to secure their place. There is no admission fee to attend Big Idea North Platte. Food trucks and a cash bar will be available.

Prize money has been pledged by the Eagle Communication&nbsp;through the Schmidt Foundation for the Community Category.&nbsp;Winners will receive: first place - $10,000, second place - $7,000, and third place - 3,000.&nbsp; Scholarships for the Youth Category &nbsp;were made possible by Mid Plains Community College and will be awarded for those who win in the amount of: first place- $2,500, second place $1,500, and third place $1,000.&nbsp;&nbsp;Each 1st place winner will also receive marketing packages courtesy of Eagle Communications and The North Platte Telegraph.&nbsp; RA Production has also pledged marketing for the first place Community winner.

Possible chance of severe weather in North Platte Thursday

NORTH PLATTE - The September 19th North Platte City Council meeting has officially passed by. This week's city council meeting was a rather quick one as there was not a whole lot of agenda to discuss. The approval of fireworks for the North Platte Public Schools was granted, Ty Lucas also talks about user fees, another discussion was the housing problem in North Platte, and finally Lucas gave his perspective from the Union Pacific rail car that caught on fire last Thursday.&nbsp;

Heartland Exotic Bird and Animal Auction October 8th in North Platte

The North Platte Community College music department has received a grant that will make it easier for students to perform at community events.

The music department was awarded a&nbsp;$5,224 grant from the James and Betty Keenan Fund. The money was used to purchase 12 new iPads that the music students can load their sheet music onto for community performances.

The iPads will be especially useful during windy days and in venues with constricted spaces. They will also be used for Music Theory and other classes.

“We are touched by the generosity of the Keenan family – they see the value music has in the lives of our students,” said Kristin Simpson, music instructor. “We are excited to use the iPads. Not only are they practical, but they align perfectly with the forward-thinking we strive for within the NPCC music department.”

Simpson said she’s grateful to the NPCC administration and Grants Coordinator Kristin Borman for their support of the endeavor.

<a>“These iPads will benefit the education, growth and development of our students as musicians, which is the number one focus of our department,” said Simpson. “We are thrilled to be able to increase our technological capabilities.”</a>

NPCC music department receives grant for iPads

Hershey Public Schools has completed Phases 2 &amp; 3a of the renovation project which began in the fall of 2022.&nbsp; The overarching goals of phase 2 &amp; 3 were to renovate the 1959 building and to increase instructional space in all elementary classrooms.&nbsp; This included converting the 1959 gym into a K-12 Library/Media Center and collaboration space, special education, and Guidance classrooms.

 A secure entrance into the building was also constructed in Phase 2 of the renovation project. This entrance was constructed at the South Bus Doors of the 1959 portion of the building.&nbsp; This entrance is utilized during business hours and all individuals are required to enter here to meet with a receptionist before entering the building during normal business hours.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Hershey will be hosting an Open House for all stakeholders to come and see the updates to the facilities.&nbsp; The open house will be held in conjunction with the annual PK-6 Open House on Tuesday, September 26, 2023.&nbsp; We are excited to announce that Hershey State Bank &amp; Hershey Agency will once again sponsor the event.&nbsp; The event will include a short presentation by Dr. McConnell (in the east gym), Group led tour (throughout the elementary classrooms), and a meal (South parking lot) presented by Hershey State Bank and Hershey Agency!&nbsp; The public is invited to attend either tour and are welcome to participate in all events! Parents and students are encouraged to choose a session that fits your child's grade level!&nbsp;

Remodeling is still underway in the 1959 North restrooms and four of the 1959 high school classrooms under Phase 3b.&nbsp; Phase 3b is anticipated to be completed at the beginning of second semester.&nbsp; Phase 4 of the renovation will occur in the spring and summer of 24.&nbsp; Phase 1, the new addition is scheduled to be completed during the second semester of this school year.&nbsp;

The entire project is roughly 55,000 square feet in renovation and 30,000 square feet in new construction.&nbsp;&nbsp; Electrical, plumbing, HVAC and fire suppression have been included in the project along with other site improvements.&nbsp;

Koss Construction of Topeka, Kan. is the prime contractor. Bridge work at reference post 122+55 will reduce traffic to one lane in each direction. There will be a 12-foot width restriction in effect and the speed limit will be reduced to 65 mph. Anticipated completion is late Oct. 2023.&nbsp;

Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up, and to put phones down.&nbsp;

Work to Resume on I-80, Near Ogallala on September 25th

Lincoln, NE – September 19, 2023 – The Powerball jackpot has been growing since July without a winner. Because of the high jackpot, the Nebraska Lottery reminds customers to play responsibly.

The Powerball jackpot starts at $20 million and continues to grow each drawing until it is won. There have been 26 consecutive Powerball drawings since July 22 without a jackpot winner. This run has grown the estimated jackpot for the Wednesday, September 20 drawing to $672 million or $320.5 million with the cash option selected. This is the 10th largest jackpot in the history of the game.

This jackpot run has produced one big Powerball winner in Nebraska.

The largest Powerball jackpot on record occurred in November 2022 when one winner in California won a $2.04 billion jackpot.

Ten jackpots ranging from $2.5 million to $365 million have been won in Nebraska since the Nebraska Lottery began offering Powerball in July of 1994. The largest Powerball jackpot won in Nebraska occurred in February 2006 when a group of eight coworkers at the ConAgra Foods ham and corned beef plant in Lincoln split a $365 million jackpot.

OGALLALA, NEB. - The Ogallala Regional Arts Council is getting ready to kick off their season of performances beginning with a concert coming up this Thursday, September 21st at 7:00 pm with Branden and James with Effie Passero. Branden and James are a cello and vocal due that travel around the United States and perform at concerts and events. Effie Passero is a singer who joins Branden and James at times when performing at events and concerts.&nbsp;

The event is taking place at the Ogallala Performing Arts Center. Tickets for the event cost $15 for adults and $7 for students. If you already purchased a membership, that would get you into the show. Memberships for the Ogallala Regional Arts Council will be sold at the show. Mid-Plains Community College Rodeo Team athletes explain roping chutes to Kids Klub members Friday at the Wild West Arena in North Platte.

The team hosted North Platte Public Schools’ afterschool program for an afternoon of educational programming.

Among other things, the elementary students learned about the various rodeo events, heard about the gear and tack used, tried their hands at roping, saw how bulls and horses are loaded into chutes and participated in a demonstration regarding the use of barriers in timed events.

Ogallala FFA fundraiser: Donkey Basketball

Plans are being made for the 9th Annual Holy Spirit Church Fall Festival to be held at the Church on Sunday, September 24th, from 11am - 2pm. The church is located at 2801 West E Street in North Platte.

This year, the event will feature a traditional roast turkey dinner with dressing. Mashed potatoes, a side dish, dessert and drink.... all for just twelve dollars for adults and six dollars for younger children. For convivence the dinner will also be available with a drive-through service on the church parking lot.

The Holy Spirit Fall Festival features a cash raffle with prizes up to nearly three thousand dollars in cash and merchandise, and there will also be a special 2nd raffle for a six-person, authentic "Indian" dinner prepared by Holy Spirit's pastor. Proceeds from both raffles benefit the fall festival event.

The day will also feature games with prizes for children, plus a silent auction and a baked foods country store. A total family event! The public is welcome to attend the 9th annual Holy Spirit Fall Festival, slated to be held on Sunday, September 24th, from 11am - 2pm.

The Sixth Annual “Change Wars…Battle for Education” started at the North Platte Public Schools on September 13 and continues to the 20th.&nbsp; “Turn over the couch cushions and guard your piggy banks because the students in the North Platte Public Schools are leaving nothing unturned as they begin this fundraiser”, said Terri Burchell the Executive Director of the North Platte Public Schools Foundation. ‘It’s time to make change count”, she added.&nbsp;&nbsp;

All seven Elementary Schools, along with Madison and Adams Middle Schools and NPHS are participating in this seven-day challenge to raise money for their schools and for the REACH Grants for Teachers and the Prepared to Learn Fund facilitated by the North Platte Public Schools Foundation.&nbsp;

Each classroom in all elementary schools, along with Team Smart Time (Madison), Team Drive (Adams) and Team Bulldog Time (NPHS) is challenged to bring in as much change as they can each day.&nbsp; Family and friends of the schools are welcome to donate on-line to&nbsp;<a href="http://nppsf.org/" target="_blank">nppsf.org</a>&nbsp;or stop in at First Interstate Bank to leave change for a favorite school and/or classroom.

According to Burchell, “There is $650 ($350-1st&nbsp;place, $200-2nd&nbsp;place $100-3rd&nbsp;place) in prize money up for grabs.&nbsp; The top three classrooms bringing in the most amount can win money to be used for their classroom.&nbsp; In addition, the school collecting the most overall change will receive a discretionary school-use prize in the amount of $500 and the chance to proclaim themselves the 2023 Change Wars Champion.&nbsp; The top teacher in each elementary building and the top three teachers at the middle schools and the top three teachers at the high school will receive a $100 Wal-Mart gift card. Thanks to a generous donation from Integrated Power Company. Many of the schools are raising money to upgrade the outdoor spaces for students.&nbsp;

&nbsp;It was reported that last year’s event brought in just over $13,000.

Each school will receive 70% of the dollar amount that they raise. In addition, new this year each elementary school will receive a matching donation of up to $250 from the Gwen Dickenson Estate. Mrs. Dickenson retired in 1996 as a long-time, very active First Grade Elementary school teacher and she passed away November 1, 2022.

&nbsp;“But that’s not all, " says Burchell, “students from the winning elementary classrooms will celebrate on&nbsp;September 22nd&nbsp;before the Bulldog vs Kearney football game.&nbsp; Little Bulldog tickets will be given to the students to attend the Backyard BBQ and the NPHS football game.”&nbsp; All&nbsp;Elementary schools will be recognized in a Victory March at 6:15 p.m. prior to the game.

Paws-itive Partners Humane Society, Inc. is sponsoring its twice-yearly Lower Income Love My Cat Month in October 2023.  Since 2011, Paws-itive Partners and veterinary clinics in North Platte and Sutherland have worked together with Lower Income Love My Cat.  This program makes spaying and neutering financially feasible to lower income cat owners.  

Beginning September 21, lower income pet owners can sign up for Love My Cat by calling Marcia Eaton at 308-520-1095 or Jo Mayber at 308-530-1516.  The lower income cat owner will be given a Love My Cat pet ID number and then a veterinary clinic to schedule their cats’ spay/neuter appointment with.  Up to three cats per person or household will be accepted.  Cat owners are encouraged to get signed up as soon as possible so they don’t miss deadlines or delays.  

 “Cats and kittens suffer because of homelessness and uncontrolled reproduction but if you have a cat or kitten, there’s no financial excuse not to spay/neuter with Love My Cat.  There’s no one that can’t budget $35 to help their pet.  Skip a drive-thru meal and save for Love My Cat,” said Jo Mayber, Paws-itive Partners president and co-facilitator of Love My Cat.  “Spay/neuter is the single most cost-effective opportunity for an owner to provide life-long care for their cat.”     

Mayber reminds people that Love My Cat focuses on lower income cat owners.  “Love My Cat is a very important program but costly.  It is Paws-itive Partners’ largest expense and costs $24,000 annually.  In addition to Lower Income Love My Cat, Paws-itive Partners helps cats and dogs year-round.  Among other programs, in 2022, Paws-itive Partners helped spay and neuter more than 700 pets.  Paws-itive Partners relies on fundraising, donations and volunteerism to care for animals.  

Paws-itive Partners&nbsp;Paws-itive Partners Humane Society, Inc. is sponsoring its twice-yearly Lower Income Love My Cat Month in October 2023. NORTH PLATTE - The Prairie Arts Center will be holding its last ever football tailgate this Saturday when Nebraska takes on Louisiana Tech. The annual tailgate takes place in the parking lot on the big screen. The event which started during the 2017 spring game has been a big hit for the PAC. As time moves forwards, so does yearly events but the PAC wants this tailgate to go out with a bang.&nbsp;

Teams will be competing against one another to take home the top prize. The event begins at 2:00 pm central and tickets are $10. Bring a lawn chair to the event. There will be items auctioned off during the event. For more information about the tailgate, check out the podcast above. The Prairie Arts Center is open Tuesday - Saturday from 11am - 4pm. Two Mid-Plains Community College Rodeo Team members are the recipients of $800 educational scholarships from NEBRASKAland Days. The students are DJ Martian, of Bowman, N.D., and Madison McGee, of Deloraine, Manitoba, Canada.

Martian and McGee were recognized Friday night at the Wild West Arena in North Platte during the evening performance of the 2023 MPCC Stampede.

“I am extremely proud of each of these kid’s hard work and effort both in the arena and in the classroom,” said Aukai Kaai, MPCC Rodeo Team roughstock coach. “They stepped up and helped take care of practice stock when needed and help during practice without asking. They are true team leaders in and out of the arena.”

The scholarships were awarded based on the students’ performance in the arena and classroom as well as their leadership skills, volunteerism and promotion of the team.

Funding for the scholarships came from entry fees to the annual NLD Cowboy Kickball Competition in June.

Martian is a saddle bronc rider and team roper. He is studying entrepreneurship at Mid-Plains.

McGee competes in breakaway roping, team roping and barrel racing for MPCC. She is a sophomore studying Agribusiness and Business Administration.
