GOTHENBURG, Neb - One can put the best possible dressing on the wound, but it won’t matter if you don’t get to the core of the issue, according to Amanda Standage, APRN. “You have to heal from the inside out by taking into account all factors that influence health such as blood sugar, pain, anemia and more.”&nbsp;

Gothenburg Health announced the addition of a Wound Care Clinic with the addition of two new certified staff. Patients will have access to wound care through the Specialty Clinic during the afternoons on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.&nbsp;

Standage said she became interested in wound care during nursing school when she had the opportunity to place a wound vac during clinicals. A couple of years out of nursing school, she had the opportunity to get certified in wound care with the encouragement of great mentors.&nbsp;

“It felt like not a lot of information was available about wound care in Nurse Practioner school. It’s a grey area. I even heard from fellow providers that it isn’t traditionally discussed in depth in medical school. That’s why people don’t often get the care they need,” she said. “I knew I wanted to get certified so that I could provide a very needed service with the highest standard of care.”&nbsp;

Standage recently traveled to Nashville to become recertified, which is required every five years with practicing hours. She was joined by Trisha Stout, who also received her wound care certification and will assist Standage in the clinic.&nbsp;

The benefit of having a Wound Care Clinic at Gothenburg Health is getting a high standard of care close to home. “Many wound patients are older, so it’s helpful that they can get care without having to travel 45 or more minutes and without having to compromise their care,” Standage said.&nbsp;

Standage joined the team of local providers at Gothenburg Health in December 2022. Other providers learned that she had experience with wound care and would consult her about best options for dressing and when to follow up, she said. “I saw a need and am excited to add the Wound Care Clinic to my current practice as a family provider.”&nbsp;

Cassie Hilbers, Chief Ancillary Officer at Gothenburg Health, said “Amada has been an excellent addition to our team of Family Practice providers. We are excited to be expanding our services to include wound care and continuing to provide quality care to Gothenburg and surrounding communities.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

Individuals interested in wound care should see their primary care provider to receive a referral to the Wound Care Clinic. Standage said patients can be seen the same or next day where she will do a comprehensive intake to discover what is happening in the body to not allow the wound to heal.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Gothenburg Health offers new Wound Care Clinic

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will consider recommendations for a 2024 mountain lion hunting season at its June 9 meeting in Alma.

The meeting begins at 8 a.m. Central time at the Alma Municipal Golf Course, 102 Dick Brown Memorial Drive.

For the first time, a harvest season will be proposed for mountain lions outside the Pine Ridge. If approved, a Niobrara Unit will be created, encompassing parts of Brown, Cherry, Keya Paha, Rock and Sheridan counties. The objective for the Niobrara Unit will be to provide a harvest opportunity for mountain lions that will allow the population to remain resilient and healthy, while slowing growth of the population.

Mountain lion presence has been documented in the Niobrara River Valley of north-central Nebraska since 2001. There has been a resident reproducing population there since 2013 and information gathered through research suggests a population that is growing and will be resilient to harvest.

Season 1 in the Niobrara and Pine Ridge units would take place Jan. 2 through the end of February. The season would end immediately in a unit if the annual harvest limit or female sub-limit were reached. The Pine Ridge limit would be four mountain lions with a sub-limit of two females, and the Niobrara limit would be two mountain lions with a one female sub-limit. Up to 320 permits would be issued by lottery in the Pine Ridge Unit and up to 160 permits will be issued in the Niobrara Unit. An auxiliary season would be held March 16 through the end of March if the annual harvest limit or female sub-limit were not reached during Season 1 in a unit.

The Commission also will consider changes to the river otter trapping season. The proposal would eliminate the overall season harvest limit and simplify the check-in process by allowing them to be checked within two days after the close of the season and before the sale or transfer of the otter. The requirement of daily checking of season status would be eliminated as well. The proposed season would be Nov. 1, 2023, through Feb. 29, 2024. Each harvester would be limited to one otter per season.

In other business, staff will recommend changes to sportfishing regulations that would allow archery paddlefish permit holders to harvest paddlefish in the spillway below Gavins Point Dam. The north wall and discharge canal would remain closed to archery paddlefish fishing.

The Commission also will consider renaming the Nebraska Game and Parks Outdoor Education Center in Lincoln the Nebraska Game and Parks Turpin Outdoor Education Center in the memory of Dick Turpin, a longtime Game and Parks employee and outdoor enthusiast.

Staff also will conduct a presentation about the recently completed Wetlands of Nebraska Outreach and Education project, which produced a series of products to increase awareness of the importance of wetlands in Nebraska.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb - Eagle Communications in North Platte and Ogallala are happy to announce the hiring of Canon Rath as new News Director for the North Platte Post, and it's 5 area radio stations. Rath was born and raised in Kearney where he graduated from the University of Nebraska at Kearney in the May of 2023 as a double major in Sports Communication and Sports Management. 

Canon got his start in radio his freshman year in college when he joined Platte River Radio as a board op and producer. He would regularly produce the Doug and Daddy Show, studio engineering many sporting events, and more. Rath also hosted the "Rutts and Rivals Scoreboard Show" for two years. After a 2 year stint, Canon would join KRGI as a color analyst announcer for the St. Paul Wildcats football team. During his 5 year stint at UNK, Rath was heavily involved with KLPR, the student run radio station. He has been nominated many times at the national level for his work for Loper Athletic broadcast and the longest student running show “Throwin Lopes” where he created it with fellow student Grant Tighe in 2020.

Canon enjoys spending his days on the golf course with his grandpa during the warm weather season. He also enjoys spending time going on walks. Canon is also very active in America's fastest growing sport of Pickleball. North Platte is not new to Canon where he spent half of his summer in 2022 as part of the first ever North Platte Plainsmen season where he served as the in-game promotions/stadium operation intern.

Eagle welcomes new News Director

With Nebraska’s permit quotas reduced for the upcoming deer seasons, hunters may find tags easily obtained in the past will be in limited supply. They can help improve their chances of getting a permit by applying during the respective periods in June and July.

Changes to permit quotas are driven by changes in the field, notably a severe decline in deer harvest last year.

The 2022 deer harvest was down 11% statewide from the previous year and down 22% from 2020. Mule deer buck harvest was the lowest since 1981 and whitetail buck harvest was the lowest since 1994.

As a result, nonresidents will find fewer permits will be available to them.

Like previous years, antelope archery has a nonresident quota of 250 permits. General elk permits are not available to nonresidents.

Overall, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is reducing November Firearm permits available to all hunters by 5.9% and Antlerless Only Season Choice permits by 7.4%.

Whitetail harvest statewide largely remained stable in the years after a large outbreak of epizootic hemorrhagic disease in 2012. But between increased harvest due to depredation complaints beginning in 2019 and minor to moderated EHD outbreaks in 2021 and 2022, whitetail numbers and harvest are down over much of the state.

Mule deer harvest has declined greatly from record and near-record levels in many western deer units in recent years. But this decline in buck harvest and populations has been faster than Game and Parks anticipated. Additionally, cases of meningeal brain worm have been reported in several central and southwest deer units the past few years, and fawn production has declined significantly in recent years.

Daily bus service returning to North Platte

NORTH PLATTE, Neb - A North Platte woman has been honored with a special award for her work with the Miss Rodeo Nebraska and Miss Rodeo America Associations.

Karen Troyer was given the inaugural Mardee Swanson Legacy Award at the Miss Rodeo America pageant last December.

The award is given to volunteers who go above and beyond the call of duty, and Troyer has done just that.

She became a member of the Buffalo Bill Rodeo Queen pageant in 1985, and six years later, when that title was retired and the Miss Rodeo Nebraska pageant moved to North Platte, she joined the Miss Rodeo Nebraska organization.

Since then, she’s done nearly everything there is to do as a volunteer: chaired the pageant committee, served as assistant director, helped with sponsorships, and chaperoned the young ladies. One of her more recent jobs is taking the lady-in-waiting, the next year’s Miss Rodeo Nebraska, to local businesses to secure funding for her travels. When the lady-in-waiting attends the Miss Rodeo America pageant in Las Vegas, Troyer goes with her, to introduce her to the functions that she will be participating in the following year, as Miss Rodeo Nebraska. Troyer has attended every Miss Rodeo America pageant since the 1980s.

The award has a special significance for her. It was created in honor of Mardee Swanson, her friend and a North Platte woman who was, like Troyer, involved with the Miss Rodeo Nebraska and the Miss Rodeo America pageants and the Velvet Spurs, an equine drill team. Swanson died last October of cancer.

Troyer and Swanson were close friends. “She couldn’t have been any closer to me than another sister,” she said. Troyer would go to Mardee and husband Swede’s ranch to move and work cattle, and their sons high school rodeoed at the same time. “We spent a lot of time together.”

Troyer loves the horsemanship portion of the rodeo queen contest as much as anything. Growing up on the ranch where her great-grandfather homesteaded, she has been on horseback much of her life. &nbsp;

She also loves working with the young women throughout their reign as Miss Rodeo Nebraska.

“I love being with the girls, seeing their personalities, and watching them grow and mature.”

She often donated the use of her American Quarter Horse to the reigning Miss Rodeo America, who rode the horse, named Hooker, at the Buffalo Bill Rodeo. One of the former Miss Rodeo Nebraska queens borrowed the horse to take to California to ride there. “The girls enjoyed riding him. He was a good horse.”

Troyer never held a queen title: “I was never rodeo queen material,” she said, but her granddaughter, Calie Troyer, has held several titles, including her current one, as Miss Teen Rodeo Nebraska. Troyer took a two-year hiatus from the pageant organization when her granddaughter ran for the title.

Joni Jespersen, an executive board member for the Miss Rodeo Nebraska organization and a national director with Miss Rodeo America, has worked alongside Troyer with the state and national Miss Rodeo organizations, and knows her well.

“She’s always&nbsp;willing to give back,” Jespersen said. “She will help with anything that she’s asked of, and she’ll help even if she’s not asked. She gives 110 percent! What an honor for her to be given this award in honor of one of her dearest lifelong friends, Mardee.”

Karen and her husband Dan have been married for 60 years; she credits him for supporting her with her volunteer work. They have five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The 2024 Miss Rodeo Nebraska will be crowned during the first night of the Buffalo Bill Rodeo in North Platte in June 14. She will spend the rest of the year preparing to take the state crown in January of ’24.

The 2023 Miss Rodeo Nebraska is Rebel Sjeklocha. She will represent Nebraska at the Miss Rodeo America pageant in December in Las Vegas.

Since the inception of the Miss Rodeo America pageant, Nebraska has had four young women win the national title: Dallas Hunt George (1957), Nancy Ann Brannon (1967), Lisa Poese Jamison (1991), and Lori Bortner Harding (2003).

The Buffalo Bill Rodeo takes place June 14-17 at the Wild West Arena in North Platte. Performances begin at 8 pm nightly.

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — A judge ruled Friday that the U.S. government can&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/california-wildfires-retardant-pollution-lawsuit-1fa9557473357d03f01b592713afd4a3">keep using chemical retardant</a>&nbsp;to fight wildfires, despite finding that the practice&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/california-wildfires-retardant-pollution-lawsuit-81e195428e748bbb36116128e35c7e39">pollutes streams in western states</a>&nbsp;in violation of federal law.

Halting the use of the red slurry material could have resulted in greater environmental damage from wildfires, said U.S. District Judge Dana Christensen in Missoula, Montana.

The judge agreed with U.S. Forest Service officials who said dropping retardant from aircraft into areas with waterways was sometimes necessary to protect lives and property.

The ruling came after came after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/wildfires-forests-lawsuits-fish-montana-0e3b777d2df198826587e702b34ebb9d">environmentalists sued</a>&nbsp;following revelations that the Forest Service dropped retardant into waterways hundreds of times over the past decade.

Government officials say chemical fire retardant can be crucial to slowing the advance of dangerous blazes. Wildfires across North America have grown bigger and more destructive over the past two decades as climate change warms the planet.

More than 200 loads of retardant got into waterways over the past decade. Federal officials say those situations usually occurred by mistake and in less than 1% of the thousands of loads annually.

A coalition that includes Paradise, California — where a 2018 blaze killed 85 people and destroyed the town — had said a court ruling that stopped the use of retardant would have put lives, homes and forests at risk.

“This case was very personal for us,” Paradise Mayor Greg Bolin said. “Our brave firefighters need every tool in the toolbox to protect human lives and property against wildfires, and today’s ruling ensures we have a fighting chance this fire season.”

State and local agencies lean heavily on the U.S. Forest Service to help fight fires, many of which originate or include federal land.

Fire retardant is a specialized mixture of water and chemicals including inorganic fertilizers or salts. It’s designed to alter the way fire burns, making blazes less intense and slowing their advance.

That can give firefighters time to steer flames away from inhabited areas and in extreme situations to evacuate people from danger.

“Retardant lasts and even works if it’s dry,” said Scott Upton, a former region chief and air attack group supervisor for California’s state fire agency. “Water is only so good because it dries out. It does very well to suppress fires, but it won’t last.”

The Oregon-based group Forest Service Employees for Environmental Ethics argued in its&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/wildfires-forests-lawsuits-fish-montana-0e3b777d2df198826587e702b34ebb9d">lawsuit filed last year</a>&nbsp;that the Forest Service was disregarding the Clean Water Act by continuing to use retardant without taking adequate precautions to protect streams and rivers.

Christensen said stopping the use of fire retardant would “conceivably result in greater harm from wildfires — including to human life and property and to the environment.” The judge said his ruling was limited to 10 western states where members of the plaintiff's group alleged harm from pollution into waterways that they use.

After the lawsuit was filed the Forest Service applied to the Environmental Protection Agency for a permit that would allow it to continue using retardant without breaking the law. That process could take years.

Christensen ordered federal officials to report every six months on their progress.

Experts say climate change, people moving into fire-prone areas, and overgrown forests are creating more catastrophic megafires that are harder to fight.

More than 100 million gallons (378 million liters) of fire retardant were used during the past decade, according to the Department of Agriculture.

Health risks to firefighters or other people who come into contact with fire retardant are considered low, according to a 2021 risk assessment.

But the chemicals can be harmful to some fish, frogs, crustaceans and other aquatic species. A government study found misapplied retardant could adversely affect dozens of imperiled species, including crawfish, spotted owls and fish such as shiners and suckers.

Forest Service officials said they are trying to come into compliance with the law by getting a pollution permit but that could take years.

To keep streams from getting polluted, officials in recent years have avoided drops inside buffer zones within 300 feet (92 meters) of waterways. Retardant may only be applied inside those zones when human life or public safety is threatened. Of 213 instances of fire retardant landing in water between 2012 and 2019, 190 were accidents and the remainder were necessary to save lives or property, officials said.

As the 2023 fire season gets underway, California Forestry Association President Matt Dias said the prospect of not having fire retardant available to a federal agency that plays a key role on many blazes was “terrifying.”

Many areas of the Western U.S. experienced heavy snowfalls this past winter, and as a result fire dangers are lower than in recent years across much of the region.

BENKELMAN, Neb -&nbsp; The Dundy County Sherriff's office in Benkelman is asking motorists not to travel Highway 34 and 61. The following was a message sent out over social media earlier Friday.

The latest update is from NDOT.  Hwy 34 is open now.  However they ask you do not travel it unless absolutely necessary.  The bridge outside of Stratton has not been checked for structural integrity, and as you can see the damage that has already happened to the tracks along side of it.  Hwy 61 remains underwater at CR 719 and is expected to remain under water for a few days as the water is standing and not flowing. 

 After revealing the roadway it will have to be inspected for safety as well due to the pickup was originally sitting on the road surface.  Max-Wauneta Road has lost the bridge and will remain closed to thru traffic until repaired.  Remember, you cannot see what is under the water so always use extreme caution when dealing with water or areas near the water.  Also, with this amount of rain it is always possible the ground under the roadways could give out with traffic.
